A Chair in a Room: Greenwater

TerrorBytes: The Evolution of Horror Gaming

Hey, it's been a long time.

We're very excited to be featured in "The ultimate exploration and celebration of horror in video games."

I will be talking about the inception of VR horror, the creation of A Chair in a Room, what I had to consider when Writing The Exorcist: Legion VR and working with highly esteemed (and Oscar winning) licenced IP.

It's shaping up to be "Five 60-minute episodes plus 15+ hours of online events, including Q&As with the biggest names in horror gaming."

It's genuinely an exciting project to be involved with and we're really looking forward to being able to watch it - except cringing at the bits that I open my mouth!

Take it easy,
Ryan

"...this is a genuinely horrifying but encapsulating game. I’ve never wanted to push through a game that I simultaneously wanted to wimp out of at the same time, but that’s what is so brilliant about A Chair in a Room: Greenwater." - Game Pitt

Remaster coming for Halloween

We’ve been busy on The Exorcist: Legion VR but we have been listening and we thought it was about time to give “Chair” a real update. Here’s a run down of what is to come:

  • Completely reworked physics and interactions
  • Added free move to the locomotion options along with crouch and free rotation to accompany teleport and the original ‘flexible room scale’ locomotion option
  • Flexible room scale is now available on Oculus so if you have 3 cameras and 2.5m x 2.5m area you can play the whole game at 1:1 scale without additional locomotion required
  • Improved artwork, updated textures and added post processing
  • Remastered soundtrack
  • Improved SFX and a new audio engine
  • Additional cues and clues to help with guide through the puzzles and story
  • Huge optimisations for smoother gameplay and faster loading
  • Added achievements
  • Cloud saves
  • Bug fixes and planned post launch support

The biggest update is that we have implemented our ‘Burrito’ interaction system which we built just before starting The Exorcist: Legion VR and implemented into the same game. This means that we now have excellent physics handling and objects interact with each other in a more natural way. It is something that people commented on at the time of creating A Chair in a Room but W&W was just me at that point, the headset was still a prototype and things like VRTK just didn’t exist so I had to workout how I thought vr interactions would work, so it feels good to revisit with the benefit of hindsight and make it much better.

We’ve made a huge amount of optimisations which have allowed us to add in new post effects and some higher poly art where we thought it would benefit the scene, for example we completely rebuilt the lodge in chapter 2 to make it just that bit creepier.

The music and audio was a passion project for us, adding live instruments into the mix has brought out a visceral edge to some of the pieces, making the whole scene feel a little more on edge.

We’ve made numerous subtle changes but that’s what Chair is all about, it is the overall feeling that we’ve tried to enhance and I think that’s why we’ve worked on so many aspects of the game, VR immerses all of your senses so we’ve put extra work into how it looks, feels and sounds to make a better experience.

The remastered version will be out very soon and will be given as a free update to people who already it on Steam.

Thanks for the support and patience, Ryan

More horror! The Exorcist: Legion VR

We've been quiet since adding Oculus Touch support earlier this year, mainly because we've been busy making a new game/experience The Exorcist: Legion VR.

- Episodic release, 1+2 launched today, with 3, 4 and 5 due very soon
- Story driven, based around the work of William Peter Blatty
- Explore to progress, any puzzles are optional

Hope you enjoy,

Ryan

UploadVR - Best Horror Game

A slightly delayed* reaction to the news but great stuff all the same. It was really an honour to be shortlisted but to win was another thing completely! Big thanks to the people who have supported this small passion project, hopefully this is the beginning of something much bigger.

*A very delayed reaction because we're busy with new VR stuff for 2017, I'll keep you posted as soon as I can say what it is.
