A House of Many Doors

V1.1 Update: Bugmageddon

Everything's stable now. There are still bugs here and there waiting to be squashed, but with this update I've run out of things that require urgent attention.

Unless there's some massive game-breaking issue lurking in the update that I don't know about, this will probably be the only update today, as it's my birthday.

- A bug in map optimization caused cities west of Vex to not show up properly on the map. Fixed now.
- Fixed bug in Harmony quest.
- Fixed minor dialogue inconsistency in Banjo quest.
- Fixed CTD when campaigning along the Mausalon River during the Ghoulwatch election.
- Fixed CTD when lying about your academic status in Hextall.
- Gambling at Clayton's Mill still had a bugged loop, though it trapped you into losing rather than winning this time (which I imagine is rather more upsetting). Fixed.
- Visiting New Draden would give you constant Apprehensions.
- Fixed bug at the end of the Pioneer newspaper storyline.
- Fixed dialogue bug in the Gladys storyline.
- Fixed bug leaving Lisshan after concluding Chimer quest.
- Fixed bug stopping you from fleeing goatmen shamans.
- Fixed bug when dropping off a Ghoul Passenger at the City of Engines.
- Fixed Tybalt sticking around where he shouldn't.
- Stopped immortal beetles from persisting after you defeat them.
- Stopped Oncoming Storm quest from repeating once completed.
- Fixed map-glitch issue when saving then loading at the Goat-Stones.

If you haven't left a Steam review yet, now would be an excellent time! Now that the game is in a stable state, it would be nice to see some more positive reviews coming out to balance the early ones that drew attention to the bugs.

V1.09 Update: Yes, Another One

Hello, all!

This update will hopefully fix the issues a select few people have been having with loading their old saves since V1.07.

In addition, it fixes a bunch of other stuff. Full changelog below:

- Too-heavy cargo would only stop you from moving if you checked it while travelling. Fixed.
- Fixed CTD when taking prisoners from Galvanic Warmobiles.
- Fixed issue where clicking in other tabs could rarely also click options in the Dialogue tab.
- Fixed the Dreams of the Dancing God quest.
- Taking a month's holiday in the City of Keys will now cause the player to recover from their Wounds. Lowered the Sanity requirement for this holiday.
- Healing from Wounds is now more forgiving in general (though it will still take ages).

V1.08 Update

Since we rolled back to the previous version of Game Maker, some users have been reporting CTDs when travelling between rooms. A few others have reported that their saves crash when loaded. This update should fix both these issues.

Other miscellaneous fixes:

- Fixed exploitable balance issue with some Shops.

V1.07 Update: Bugthrash!

Hello, all.

First off: Apologies for your Maps getting wiped by Update 1.05. This was an inevitable result of fixing another, much nastier bug. It was a one-time thing and it won't happen again.

Good news, though: I've ruthlessly optimized the map even further, and now it runs like a dream. Map FPS won't be an issue any longer.

The game is now stable. There are still occasional bugs, but nowhere near as many as we experienced immediately post-launch. If you were waiting for patches before you hopped back into the game, now's the time.

I'm very grateful to everyone who's been submitting reports. (Shout out to Bobby, who's been bugtesting the game from top to bottom with incredible diligence.)

As usual, here's a list of all the fixes:

- Further map optimizations.
- Everyone now recovers from Wounds a bit quicker.
- Fixed an issue where accidentally falling through a mirror into Chimer dropped you in a lonely dark hellscape (maybe a feature, not a bug).
- Fixed an issue with Drifting Bean concern text not updating correctly.
- Fixed a minor dialogue bug in Recalcitrance.
- Fixed CTD in Cromlech-Bradley random banter.
- Stopped Bizarre Effigies from silently appearing in the inventory when the player tears down a cairn.
- Fixed dialogue bug at the mycena villages (Twinflower Rust, Frogbit Smut, Bogshadow).
- Fixed CTD caused by the clown wagon trying to laugh.
- You can now successfully propitiate the Clock-Faced God.
- Fixed occasional blank-dialogue bug when attending a lecture in Hextall.
- Chimer quest: I fixed 2 out of 3 dialogue options, but there was still one remaining that failed to give the player the correct item. Now fixed.
- Fixed blank-dialogue bug from Lady Nyctimene.
- Fixed occasional CTD from lighting engine.
- Losing a fight to the noddy doctors in the Violante quest now genuinely kills you.
- Fixed blank-dialogue bug in the King in Kind quest.

V1.06 Update: Map Optimization!

This will be the final update for today. First of all, good news: I've got confirmation from multiple players that the file deletion bug has definitely been quashed by the previous update. We can breathe easy again.

Secondly, more good news! This update contains a much-requested fix - an optimization for the Map screen! It now runs a lot faster than before.

I'll continue to work on the optimization, as there's still room for improvement. But I think you'll all agree it's now much, much better.

As usual, I've also fixed a bunch of miscellaneous bugs and issues. Here's the full patch notes:

- MAP OPTIMIZATION.
- Fixed "get put" typo in the City of Bridges.
- Fixed dialogue issues when inviting Fiona to your Dwellings.
- Actually fixed the Chimer quest. (Previous fix was not, in fact, a fix.)
- You no longer get a free Flare and Hand of Glory by pressing tab. This was a debug feature that somehow slipped into the non-debug game. Whoops!
- Game now remembers how many times you've visited the Goat-Stones.
- Fixed ending of Abbas storyline.
- Fixed minor typo in the City of Bridges.
- Fixed very infrequent CTD caused by enemy boxcars losing their kinetopedes.
- Fixed CTD that could sometimes disrupt the endgame.
- Fixed dialogue bug that wouldn't let you bring grimoires to the Ten-a-Penny Man.
- Fixed issue with one branch of the Chasmonauts quest.
- Fixed rare combat pathing issue.
- Fixed minor dialogue bug in Rotherford quest.

V1.05 Fix For File Deletion Issues

Hello, all.

This build should fix the issue causing file deletion on non-C: drives.

If you're at all interested in the technical issues behind it all, read on:

I'm currently working with a more experienced dev who's kindly agreed to help out. He thinks he's found the root cause. The problem seems to be a bug with Game Maker: Studio.

Apparently GMS is assigning to a pointer a temporary string that gets rewritten and deleted, so when the game exits, it points to an empty string. The engine is trying to remove temporary files, but since it feeds an empty string to find files, it actually ends up trying to remove every file it can find.

We've found a solution: Reverting to an older version of Game Maker where the bug doesn't exist.

Hopefully this will fix the issue, though I still advise caution until we're 100% sure.

Other miscellaneous bugfixes included in this patch:

- Fixed map error when visiting Gunsmith.
- Fixed blank-dialogue bug when retrieving a sample of tooth retreat.
- Fixed hollow snail CTD.
- Fixed shipwreck interactions.
- Fixed delving quests showing up on map after they're done.
- Fixed a broken branch of Bishop storyline.
- Fixed bug in late-game spoiler territory.
- Fixed blank-dialogue issue when you invite Fiona to your Dwellings while you have Childhood: Scavenger background.
- Fixed typo in Lucetta's story.
- Fixed rare combat CTD when the enemy vehicle exploded while trying to board you.
- Fixed minor dialogue bug at Signal Station Null.
- Fixed CTD when losing money at the City of Keys.
- Fixed issue with detecting when the player had enough Cultural Knowledge.
- Fixed issue with one branch of the Chimeric Empire storyline.
- Fixed occasional endgame CTD caused by a silly typo.

V1.04 & Important Notice: C Drive Install Necessary

Hello, all. If you are reading this and have HOMD installed in your C: drive, don't worry - the following issue doesn't affect you. I recommend that anyone downloading the game for the first time save it in the C: drive.

However, if your game is installed in another drive, please take note. Some users have reported that when A House of Many Doors is installed outside the C: drive, there may be deletion of other files, including but not limited to other Steam games.

I'm working on finding a fix for this issue and I'll let you know as soon as it is resolved. Until then, please make sure the game is installed on your C: drive.

I've also uploaded a new build. Patch notes:

- Fixed blank-dialogue bug in Ashen quest.
- Fixed blank-dialogue bug when repairing hull at City of Engines.
- You can now rest & recover sanity at Mergulus.
- Fixed looping dialogue options in Ashen quest.
- Fixed blank-dialogue bug in City of Engines.
- Fixed Sandy dialogue not showing up.
- Fixed occasional CTD caused by the Hand of Glory.
- Carchar passengers couldn't be dropped off at Penitents' Bluff: Now fixed.
- Fixed occasional CTD from the scorpiopede hunting Tybalt.
- In the Chimer quest, the fake rebel plans now successfully appear in your inventory.
- Your Ghoul Passenger stuck around even after you dropped him off at Founder's Fire. Now fixed.
- Fixed CTD when hiring mercenaries in the Entomarch civil war.
- Fixed very occasional CTD from having too much cargo in the hold.
- Fixed Oddwinter typo.
- Fixed non-dismissable dialogue issue with Peter McNally.
- Can no longer sell slaves at Scornvaunt when you shouldn't be able to sell slaves at Scornvaunt.
- Fixed blank-dialogue bug in Banjo quest.

V1.03 Another Major Stability Patch

Hello all,

This is the last major patch today (I need to sleep). The CTDs are now fixed, I believe, except an odd few rare ones that I'll hunt down over the next few days. Tomorrow I work on improving map performance.

Compatible Graphics mode is now only recommended for users who have been experiencing visual glitches in combat. If you were formerly experiencing crashes before the previous update, it's recommended you now switch to "Normal."

Also:

- Fixed Unsettling Conjectures exploit. No more infinite pondering.
- Fixed CTD when the "Surprise Guest" Golem Launcher is equipped in the 3rd weapon slot.
- Typo: Selling intrigues to the Prince's Eye said it gave "+1 Reputation: The City of Keys," even though it should have said "+1 Reputation: The Sixfold Principate." Fixed.
- Fixed CTD when fleeing from combat.
- Fixed an issue with pesky bats occasionally causing a CTD when you paused the game as they fly over.
- Fixed exploit where you could tell Lord Aranach endless bleak fables.
- Fixed CTD from darkness-monster losing track of itself.
- Fixed CTD from sending a guard down to investigate a terrible prison.
- Fixed dependency issues in the Dreams of the Dancing God quest.

Again, thanks for your patience. If you were having frequent problems with the game before, please consider trying it again.

Mac build will be ready tomorrow.

V1.02 Update: Common Combat Crash Fixed!

Good news for the small but understandably frustrated group of players who've been experiencing issues with the game crashing at the end of combat encounters. I think, unless I'm missing something, that I've managed to fix the problem. This update fixes that issue, along with some other smaller fixes.

- The big one: Fixed (I think) lighting engine bug that had been causing CTDs for some players with Intel graphics cards. Let me know if this works.
- Fixed blank-dialogue bug in Genevieve story.
- Fixed incorrect shop item display in Grossfathom.
- Fixed CTD when inviting Char to lodgings.
- Restored the ability to sell drugs on the black market.
- Fixed a spoilery bug with late-game content.
- Fixed very infrequent CTD when loading map.

Assuming this fix is satisfactory, my next priority will be to optimize the map. The update that improves map performance should come tomorrow. Thanks for your patience.

PLEASE NOTE: If the game is freezing on character creation, update your graphics drivers. After that, let me know if the problem persists.

OH AND ALSO PLEASE NOTE: The update for Macs will not happen until later tonight.

You can stop noting things now. Thank you.

V1.01 Update: Stability Patch

Hi all,

I've uploaded a new build of A House of Many Doors with some quick hotfixes. These include:

- Fixed a crash-to-desktop caused by player portrait alpha values. This was the bug that had been causing CTDs for most people. It slipped through the cracks of development at the very last minute. With it gone, I expect the game to be much more stable for 80% of players.
- Fixed infinite gambling loop at Clayton's Mill.
- Fixed a CTD when breaking up with Char. Her heart was so broken it killed the game.
- Fixed a CTD in Valeria dialogue.
- Fixed CTD issue with Tutorial tooltips.
- Fixed a problem with the Bandit achievement being rewarded wrongly.
- Fixed an infrequent issue with paused missiles causing CTD.
- Fixed a blank-dialogue issue at Gandola.
- Fixed a blank-dialogue issue at Eld Abrathat.
- Fixed a blank-dialogue issue in the Orchard dream.
- Fixed dependency issues in the Dreams of a Dancing God quest.
- Fixed scrambled dialogue options when speaking to Rotherford.
- Fixed useless dialogue options when you've invited Abbas to your lodgings.
- You can now successfully catch a toxin shark.
- You can now successfully flatter Lady Lucanid.
- You can now sell a living Dangerous Beast to the zoo in Founder's Fire, rather than a dead one (which I imagine would make for a more disappointing exhibit).
- Publishing short-story anthologies will now actually give you money, unlike real life.

If you've been experiencing errors at the end of combat, with the crash log mentioning a "lighting engine," you're in a small but understandably frustrated group of people whose PCs seem to have some incompatibility with the game. I've added something that I hope is a fix: Please switch your Combat Graphics in the Options menu from "Normal " to "Compatible." This should work for the moment - however, if not, please let me know. In the meantime, I'll do some work to find the root cause of the issue.

Over the coming few days I'll also do some work to improve the laggy map. I'll let you know when I post the update that improves this.

Final note: Your progress on the Magnum Opus decreasing every time you work on it is not a bug. :)

I hope you've been enjoying the game and can forgive this rocky start. I'm a one-man development team, and though I've been testing the game as much as I can for months, some bugs have obviously slipped through the cracks before release. This is no excuse, of course, which is why I've been working steadily to address your issues. This build is much more stable, and I hope most people's issues have been resolved.
