A Token War

Gameplay Update 6/26/23

We've made an update to the standard difficulty of A Token War in an effort to better embrace the more puzzle oriented nature of a lot of the battles.

Previously: losing any battle would consume 1 White Flag. Once you run out of white flags, the next loss resets your progress to the last checkpoint.

After this update: You can only lose a maximum of 1 White Flag per battle, meaning that the FIRST time you lose a particular battle you will use up a White Flag, but unsuccessful subsequent attempts will not.

This change does not impact True Strategist difficulty.

**This change will only take effect after the next loss on a battle for current campaigns, previous losses were not tracked so any in-progress campaigns can still lose one flag on a battle they have been stuck on.

The primary goal of this change is to allow players to spend time trying to figure out how to take on a given challenge, without being too punishing for failed attempts. The battles in a A Token War often feel more like puzzles, where the key to winning is figuring out the correct strategy rather than assembling the perfect army. Hopefully players will find that the new flag system allows them to experience the game more fully while still being challenging.

Small stabilization patch

Bug fixes for potential inconsistency in saving and loading, updating data scheme.

A Token War - Versus Mode Patch - 8/2/2021

A small patch for versus mode focused on bug fixing.

1.) Players can no longer place more that one Stronghold when in a versus match. Previously this would result in an invalid setup state, however, passing the turn could lock the invalid state and cause a whole host of problems.

2.) Fixed a bug where spells in versus matches would sometimes think they belonged to the opposite player, either preventing them from being cast at all or only showing valid targets for the opponent.

Slapdash - For those who may suffer more damage than they wish in battle, Slapdash can help by repairing your Stronghold for 2 health after every victory.

A Token War - Balance Update 7-5-2021

Balance Update



As part of our ongoing effort to address game balance, this update focuses on making the early game more approachable and forgiving.


  • Changed Stronghold type from "Manor House" to "Homestead" on the "Funnel of Doom" level.
  • Removed enemy Unit space from "The Hill Fort."
  • Increased player power limit on "The Forest Gates."
  • Added additional checkpoints to the middle of Zones 2, 3, and 4.
  • Player now receives repairs after completing intermediate checkpoints.
