Alpha 7.5 : Angry Letters Revisited

No, not angry letters from players of the game - thankfully!

This first update post Early Access launch is very much inspired by the initial feedback, the players have sent my way. I highly appreciate your help in making the game better for everyone, so thank you!

One request I got multiple times, was the ability to see an actual angry letter from a reader. So that became the main feature for this update, but it's more than just a random collection of insults - their content is based on where you are in the game, taking several factors into account.

There were also a couple of crash fixes (I hope), and a few other improvements. They are detailed below.

Note: This update should work with existing save games.

  • Sample Angry Letter. Each new issue that generates angry letters now comes with a sample letter for you to review (click the frownie-faced button). The complaints/insults in the letter are based on things like your progress, political extremism, reputation and credibility.
  • Time Bonus. If you win the game before the 4 years are up, a special bonus is applied to your score. Does not apply, if you end the game without winning.
  • Reporter Management. You no longer need the mouse to select the first reporter. Arrow up/down will select the top/bottom reporter respectively.
  • Map Guide. When pressing G to show/hide the map guide, your setting is now remembered from day to day. Previously, it would reset daily.
  • Crash fix: when a reporter is poached
  • Crash fix: when a reporter is fired, but there was already an event lined up where that reporter was going to quit.
  • Added a "your mom called" event to catch exceptions such as the above.

If you want to add suggestions or report crashes and bugs, there are several ways you can do it. The discussions on the Steam Community Hub is a great place, or you can log bugs directly through the game website (look for the blue tab on the right-hand side). Finally, if you'd like to chat with me and the other fans of the game, you are welcome to join the discord channel.

Thanks for playing!

Early Access, Here We Come

On December 3rd 2018, Above the Fold will be available for purchase in the Steam Store in Early Access.

The final release is scheduled for late 2020, which should indicate that there is still quite a lot of work to do. That said, the version that goes live on December 3rd is fully playable, in the sense that you can "lose" and "win" the game, and most of the features are in, if not fully fleshed out or balanced. I highly recommend reading the Early Access section of the store page to get a better idea of how far along the game is, and what is still missing.

Bugs and suggestions can be reported via the game's website, and both are welcomed and encouraged! If there is something you don't like in the game, please tell me, but also include what you'd like to see instead.

Something you absolutely love in the game? Share that too, but do it publicly so more people buy it. As a solo dev, that's the best support I could ask for!

Above the Fold is a dream project of mine. It was one of the first game ideas I wanted to build, but it took a while to get there. I can't wait to see it in its final form, and would like to thank everyone who already has or will get involved in its completion.

Oh yeah, and the game launches with a 15% early bird discount, as a thank you for your faith in this newspaper sim!
