Astray

Version 1.2 - Additional improvements, polish & bug fixes

  • Upgraded to the latest stable Unreal Engine version (includes various bug fixes & performance improvements)
  • Implemented a virtual cursor for controller support in the menus
  • Added an option to toggle crouch rather than having to hold it
  • Changed the menu font to something nicer looking
  • Increased font size for all notes to make them easier to read from a distance
  • Dramatically reduced the amount of disk space the game needs
  • Fixed an issue causing movement controls to get stuck after opening a menu or note
  • Fixed an issue causing original movement controls to not be properly overridden when rebinding keys
  • Fixed some collision issues
  • Fixed formatting, spelling, and grammar mistakes on notes

This will likely be the last time we upgrade Astray to a new version of Unreal Engine since it seems to make previous game saves incompatible.

Version 1.1 - More bug fixes, improvements, and polish

  • The infamous saving/loading bug shouldn't happen any more. No longer will save games randomly be corrupted
  • Falling through the world should be eliminated
  • Loading times should be shorter (for first entering the game)
  • Various performance optimizations
  • Camera clipping through walls should no longer happen
  • Fixed spelling, grammar & formatting errors on notes
  • Other minor bug fixes, improvements, and polish added

IMPORTANT:

For some of these fixes, the save game system had to be completely replaced and zones split into separate files; as such, old save games are useless. If you don't want to lose your progress, don't update to the newest version.

Bug Fixes & Misc. Improvements

  • Upgraded to the latest stable version of Unreal Engine (4.7)
  • Improved performance in the starting area, saving ~3ms per frame (the difference between 50 & 60 fps)
  • The correct footstep sounds should now always play based on the surface the player is walking on
  • Overhauled the saving & loading system. Saved games are no longer overwritten; each time the game is saved, a new save file is created
  • Collision issues may be resolved. No falling through the world while testing, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's fixed

Known Issues
There's a rare bug (that also occurred in older versions) causing a saved game to become corrupt. We haven't been able to fix this issue but the changes to the save system means that if this bug does corrupt a save file, it can be deleted and you'll only lose one checkpoint worth of progress at most, rather than your entire game. We're still working to get this resolved but so far, we haven't been able to reproduce the bug - making it hard to track down exactly what is going wrong.

Bug Fixes & Look Sensitivity Slider

A small update to add some requested functionality and fix a couple of bugs:

  • Fixed issue with VSync not working
  • Rebinding keys should no longer overwrite gamepad controls. You may need to delete your config folder (found in AppData) to get gamepad controls back (usually "C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Astray\Saved\Config\" for Windows 7)
  • Added a "look sensitivity" slider to the options menu. Works with both mouse & gamepad turning speeds. Also reduced the base sensitivity of the gamepad controls
  • The cog-operated portcullises (portculli?) in the Caverns should now correctly save their state
