Today/tonight, or whatever time this message beams into your eye sockets, we have a super special update! We abandoned our previous plans of Mimicry and other tomfoolery because they all sucked, and instead decided to bring to you…
THE MUSHROOM MINES
… because they are totally more awesome.
“The Goblins delved too deep and too greedily when they dug the Dungeonland mines. Hungry for magic mushrooms, they ate too many and awoke an ancient evil, the mine shafts collapsed and they had a helluva hangover the next day…” - Unknown, but clearly very wise source
What you’ll find when you launch the game is that aaaalll the dungeons have been replaced with mines. There is NO NEED FOR PANIC, the dungeons will be returning very soon! For the moment we want to force you all to play the mines so we can stress test them, and makes sure they are up to scratch, since this is a big change.
What you can expect over the next couple of weeks is, as mentioned, Return of the Dungeons, as well as implementing new behaviours for mine objects such as the Minecarts (which will be turning into Rolling Death Carts), as well as a whole host of fixes & performance improvements.
These mines are part of our Master Plan™, and the next major step will be filling these mines with a whole new set of enemies! We’re super excited to get these new guys into the game, we have big plans for how to change up the established gameplay and throw some serious curveballs your way (because obviously the game is far too easy right now…)
Finally, this update brings a whole new feature, Price Increase! This was *by far* our most requested feature (not true), and it’s only due to *massive* public pressure that we’ve introduced this incredibly innovative feature (absolute lies).
In all seriousness, this is in line with our stated plans to raise the price steadily over the course of Early Access as more content is introduced to the game.
Hope you all have a fantastic weekend
MUCH LOVE,
Owlbear
The Mini Mimic Update
WHAT’S IN THE BOX!?
We’re calling it "The Mini Mimic Update"
1. Because it’s a mini update
2. It’s got a New Creature:“The Mimic”
Y’all know by now that Barbara-ian’s Wisdom attribute isn’t going to win many saving throws against a deceptive shapeshifter like a Mimic. HOWEVER, we also know what Barbara-ian does to chests! So pick up The Mini Mimic Update to find out what’s in store for these slippery critters.
Although we're committed to bringing everyone bi-weekly Babs updates. We're hoping to get this one out even earlier as we're super pumped for you all to be playing with these hilarious characters.

Please, please let us know what you think, either head over to the steam discussion boards or leave comments here

Simply because we were so excited to get these little guys into the game we’ve deviated slightly from our intended bi-weekly schedule. We're hoping to get this update out on the 7th August! and then you can expect something even HOTTER the fortnight after...

LASERS ARE LIVE
Hey folks,
Owlbear is pleased to announce that there are now FRICKIN LASERS in Barbara-ian.
Here's a full rundown of whats in this update......
NEW Weapon - Tome Of Laser Vision This is added straight into the weapon pool, so keep hitting them chests and you'll find it eventually! It's stupidly good, you're able to mow down everything around you with the blink of an eye. You'll still get killed, but it'll only be because you were marveling at the destruction and failed to see that little green freak sneak up on you.
NEW Enemy - Beholder These guys start spawning at Level 3, so ALL YOU SLACKERS need to get there asap to check him out. You'll have to find out what he does for yourselves, but suffice it to say, Lasers feature pretty prominently
Progression We actually went back on this little plan, if you read the announcement we made about the change. Currently it works exactly like before. We found that, especially after adding the stupidly OP lasers, you would never ever not use the best weapon. So we had a choice - balance all the weapons, making the most fun ones less fun, or stick with the previous progression model. So we stuck. We'll definitely revisit this later on, but for now, keep looting them chests!
Lighting We stuck lights on the doorways. A not insignificant number of people mentioned the darkness as a problem - we like the dynamic it adds to combat, accidentally plunging yourself into darkness in the middle of a fight. However, it should never be so dark that you cant find the way to progress, so this solves that issue at least. We're still open to lighting the place up more, but try this out and let us know what you think.
There are also a couple of bug fixes, which I'll list here
- You can no longer show the seed selection using the Q button
- Sparks/Lighting fx for hitting stuff now spawns correctly on the hit object
- Fixed collision for various dungeon pieces to stop stuff flying through walls in quite such an unreasonable fashion
- Increased particle collision accuracy, so more blood will splash
So check it out & please do let us know what you think either here or over on the Steam discussion boards
Happy SMASHING (& pewpweing) y'all!
LOVE,
Owlbear
Next Update - LASERS
YEH YOU READ IT RIGHT
Otherwise known as the cleverly named 'The Lasers Update', we're hoping to get this update out on the 31st July, and will include the following...
New weapon "Tome Of Laser Vision" As the gif suggests, this will entail Babs reading a passage from an ancient and powerful text, ascribed by the Gods of the Dungeons themselves as was foretold during the time of the great foretelling, granting her the momentary ability to FIRE LASERS FROM HER EYEBALLS
New monster "The Beholder" Deep within the darkest and most horrifying corners of an old copy of the D&D monster manual lies a creature so mind numbingly terrifying that no man could face it. Luckily Babs is no man...
BEHOLD - The Beholder! A creature born to.. behold all that is to be.. beholdeth before it.
Don't worry - we're not entirely beholden to D&D so we've got our own twist to this uh.. noble fiend
ALSO We're going to change up the way progression works - for the next update, collecting chests will no longer be tied to progressing deeper into the dungeon. Once you've found the exit, it'll be open to you immediately and you can go deeper.
Instead, we're going to start tracking how many chests you collect per playthrough, and hopefully get that integrated into Steams Stats to track highscores! So, whether you scour each level for every chest (no longer knowing exactly how many to expect) or whether you keep heading down where the risk / reward ratio is more skewed in favour of OH GOD NO will be up to you.
This'll be a bit of an experiment - we've been doing things the old way for a year now, so please please let us know what you think, either head over to the steam discussion boards or leave comments here
