Double XP Weekend & What's To Come

With another season comes another update, Autumn (or Fall for those of you across the pond) brings a new batch of ideas, gameplay changes and map design. But first let's talk about the now.

Wrapping up Season 5 - Double XP

Season 5 played home to one of our biggest seasons to date. With weapon balances, map reworks, Arcade and UI improvements, our Gladiator DLC, the list goes on. None of which would have been possible without our ever supportive community. For that, we thank you. We thank you for sticking with us every step of the way and understand the qualms or frustrations some of you may have. As the saying goes, actions often speak louder than words and because of this we’ll be rolling out a Double XP weekend for all those that want to grind out the final steps in their Season 5 collection.

The Broader Scope

Battalion 1944 has undeniably come a long way since Early Access and things will only get better, one of the ways we go about this has been live development. One on one community outreach straight from our screen to yours. The next map to receive the loving embrace of our live streams will be Savoia! Ideas have already been rolling in from all regions and we can't wait to see how your decisions impact how we and future players traverse the environment. If you ever wonder how to get involved, look no further than our Discord or Twitter channels where we'll continue to announce the hows and whens of future streams.

What We Do in the Shadows?

Behind closed doors cogs turn and pieces fall into place as is the way with development. Often we want to shout from the rooftops, howling at the moon on a dark night about what we're working on and when its coming to fruition. We want that just as much as our community and though sometimes this can't be the case we can give you a taste of the long term. Our team work scrupulously to create content for our upcoming British invasion, fun in game events and offline celebrations for those of a competitive nature and we can't wait to hear you opinions. No matter how 'ghoulish' they might be!

Autumn Season Update

We know you guys love to be kept in the know and often things can seem quiet, but don't worry as we're always working hard to cultivate Battalion and grow on the foundations we have sewn. Our mission shall remain the same. Improve, improve, improve.

As the sun rises on Season 6, set to launch next week, we look to shape the game in a new way implementing an often requested feature, reintroduce a certain map to the competitive pool and push on with some previous plans to improve the games overall quality of life. On top of this we'll be coming in strong with a new collection of skins for you sink your teeth into as well as improving the ways in which you earn them. Overall we think we're in for a good time moving forward to Christmas and we hope you stick around to see our plans become a reality.

Now go forth and reap the benefits of Double XP!

Have a great weekend

Unranked Wartide & Double XP Weekend - Hotfix 23896

Over the last five days since the release of the Mid Season Update we've been working hard to fix any and all small issues we've encountered on the way. Whilst doing so our community have been testing Invasion in our Special Event and the response has been fantastic. Using your critical feedback we can take finalise changes to Invasion making it a map we'll no doubt see in the competitive and casual map pools sooner, rather than later! For all those that have played we would just like to say thank you. But that's not all...

Unranked Wartide

Making its return to the Battalion 1944 forefront comes Unranked Wartide. For those not in the know, Wartide is Battalion 1944's 5v5 competitive game mode - two teams face off in a 24 round showdown of attack and defence. Destroy the Axis objectives as the Allied team, whilst both factions try to outwit and outmanoeuvre each other in a game of skill and momentum. 13 rounds will take the map, baring in mind that with every round comes one life, one chance to make that game saving play, one opportunity that could make or break your teams progress.

Unranked Wartide will act as the bridging gap between our casual and competitive experience for those looking to try their hand at something different without the pressure of an ELO driven environment. Integrating this is an important choice for us and now we've various quality of life issues addressed we're glad to bring it into its own playlist!

Maps Featured

  • Liberations
  • Manorhouse v2
  • Coastal
  • Derailed
  • Vanguard

Double XP Weekend

With the addition of Unranked Wartide and in line with our recent changes to how XP works, we thought "what better time to give our wonderful community a Double XP weekend" - The time is now! Over the coming weekend and with the start of FACEIT's new season having recently begun, all XP across all of our game modes is now doubled for your Battlerank grind!

Other Patch Notes

  • Changes to smoke to fix post processing volume issues being offset from smoke effect

We're making an ever lasting effort to support the Battalion 1944 community by addressing many issues big and small, keep an eye out for future updates and keep your fantastic feedback coming in!

Have a great weekend

Hotfix 23879 - Matchmaking, Smokes

A small client side update went out today and I'm sure you're itching to know what we've done!

Matchmaking Fix

In our ongoing efforts to create the perfect casual environment we've fixed a very important part of our matchmaking system. You and your friends will now be able to queue together whilst also remaining on the same team! No longer will the game pit you and your pals against one another which means you'll be able to frag happily into the night without the fear of being separated. Rejoice!

Patchnotes

  • Fixed Matchmaking.(see above)
  • Corrected some issues with smokes that make them see through or rendered their shape in an opaque manner.
  • Private Server maintenence to increase stability and reduce crashes.
  • Disabled 'Surrender' option in the Invasion Wartide special event to prevent xp gain exploitation.

With that being said we would like to thank each and everyone of you that have supported us in a combined effort to help address any issues with our new iteration of features. Your ongoing presence and dedication really does make the difference.

Thank you

Come and say hello!

Mid Season Update LIVE! - Casual, Invasion and Smoke Reworks

Four weeks have passed since the release of our first Seasonal patch in our concentrated effort to supporting Battalion 1944 long term. Mid Season has arrived, and we’re excited to show you what we have instore! Let's get started.

The Bulk(head) Of It - The Casual Experience

Over the last few weeks we’ve been keeping you guys informed with previews and developer streams as a way to better gauge what our players want most. We recognise the value in our player’s ongoing commitment which help us maintain and mould Battalion 1944 across the board. With an increased attentiveness to casual gameplay we’re really able to hone in on what make our mechanics fun to utilise in said environment as we move forward.

We’ve improved the experience ten fold by revisiting the way our players interact with game modes and each other. In previous versions of Battalion 1944 and for many of our casual community, ‘Arcade’ felt somewhat lacklustre, something we have never disagreed with, a spare part in a much bigger machine but one we intend on re-inventing as we proceed. By re-adding modes that you loved from day one to those requested across multiple avenues you can be sure we have something for you in Battalion 1944.

Free For All

One hotly requested game mode has been Free For All, the ultimate be your own hero shoot em up experience. Think you’re capable of doing all the heavy lifting? Now it's time to put it to the test. Up to 12 players face off in the ultimate rumble, selecting their choice of weaponry as you fight to the top of the scoreboard.

Rifles Only

You read that right, with free for all comes the ever loved 1 pop till you drop fanfare. A slew of wiggles and weaves as you land the perfect shot or keep up the momentum as you make your way through the server decimating everything in your path. A classic game mode we’re excited to include in our Arcade rotation full time. As we'll be including it in the main arcade queue this means we’ll see the inclusion of the M1 Garand. We understand how this may frustrate the rifles only purists amongst us, but it's important to give players the ability to learn how to counter the bolt-action rifles with the Garand as well as allowing some players who are now voted into a rifles only game to have an alternate option with a gun that is ultimately- still a rifle.

Arcade Map and Mode Voting

With the inclusion of the aforementioned game modes and full time positioning of HQ we have introduced map and game mode voting as a mainstay for the Arcade queue. We firmly believe that our community should get to decide how they experience the game in a casual environment and we’re now glad to give you the option. Whether it be Free for All Rifles Only on Manorhouse or Domination on Liberation. The choice is now yours.

A selection of 6 mix and match of maps and modes awaits you on the vote screen.

Test The New Invasion!

Map reworks are a common trend and balance is no laughing matter. For us at Bulkhead we want our maps to be the best they can and over the last month, a lot of our community have been sitting down with Brammer every week to have their say on Invasion’s facelift and rework. We’re glad that in this time we’ve seen a diverse change to the way YOUR map plays overall and can’t wait to see how it plays in both casual and competitive environments. Check out some of the changes below!

A substantial rework to Mid opens up the map for multiple attack points

Attack the new and improved A site via the concrete luge of Yellow

Now that you’ve had a taste of what's to come, why not try it for yourself? For the next week, Unranked Wartide on Invasion will feature as our Special Event - in this time we await patiently for your valuable feedback on what you think does or does not work, so go forth our merry community and test, test, test!

Possible inclusion of casual wartide coming?

Smoke Overhaul

As previously shown in a recent Mid Season Preview we introduced you to Battalion 1944’s new smoke grenade.

Smoke grenades play a huge part in Battalion’s break away defence and first line of attack. They provide the foundation for key, round winning moments, or block crucial information to prevent an opponent's advances.

Over the last year we’ve constantly been working towards balancing and creating a formidable smoke. A smoke that does exactly what it says on the tin, and dare I say, we think we’re pretty close. We’ve improved the smoke so that players will no longer be able to turn the edge of the smoke client side using their mouse as a way to gain an advantage. You can see the difference below!

Old Smoke

New Smoke

Our man in the cloud (of smoke) James Tatum gave us a run down of exactly how the smokes in Battalion work, give it a read here: https://steamcommunity.com/games/489940/announcements/detail/1617276469910067569

UI and Quality of Life Changes

We recently spoke of quality of life and how it helps us evolve in a way that benefits the general feel, mentality and future of the game. This week you’ll see some of these changes come into full effect, quite literally. We’ve adjusted the main menu to give it a feeling of home by condensing the vital information you guys want to see. We’ll always be looking to add to our UI in a way that fits the ongoing evolution of Battalion 1944.

Other quality of life issues we've included are

  • STG & BAR hipfire changes to buff Thompson & MP40
  • Shotgun rack time decrease
  • VOIP now visible in buy menu to improve pre-round communication
  • Request Donation button added
  • Improved hit registration & client side bullet collision effects
  • Removed medals from bot kills
  • Option to delete items from inventory

Battalion 1944 @ epic.LAN - Powered by Chillblast

For us at Bulkhead and many of those within Battalion's competitive scene, epic.LAN has been a right of passage providing an affordable and more community-driven event within the UK - an ethos we too believe in. Taking your first steps at a grass roots level should be open to all and with the help from our friends at Chillblast (who have kindly provided 40 turn up and play machines) that idea has become a reality. Up to as many of 32 teams will face off at the Kettering Conference Centre for their share of up to £15,000 on October 10th - 13th.

Year One Roadmap

Whether you're joining us for the very first time or a returning player, remember to check out our Year One Roadmap. Packed full of free content and fixes, looking to keep you up to date which just what we're looking to add to Battalion 1944's future. Mid Season Preview_v2

Hello troops! Here’s a quick breakdown of what we’re bringing to the frontlines this week.

2 More More Maps!

We’re at it again, the ever expanding HQ experience sees us finally fighting on all fronts as this week we add Derailed and Battery. Crashed planes, trains and automobiles await you in this weeks update. We've nearly come full circle with some interesting features to best assess your casual needs!

Mid Season Patch - Preview_V2

Last week we gave you a little sniff of what's to come for September’s Mid Season Patch and this week is no different. For those of you not in the know, the MSP, as we like to call it, involves a number of fixes, changes, and quality of life solutions. It’s our way of really getting to grips with what our players would like to see without disrupting the flow of progression or jumping the gun too soon.

Quality of life you say? Quality of life is the standard of health, comfort, and happiness experienced by an individual or group. The Battalion community is our group and these small intricacies and additions are our way of implementing features you’ve asked for. One example of this would be call outs and map locations under the radar - a small change can make a world of difference for communication, whether a veteran or stepping into the server for the first time, these are exactly the kind of quality of life changes we’ll be looking to make a more permanent fixture.

Fog of War

Smoke grenades play a huge part in Battalion’s break away defence and first line of attack. They provide the foundation for key, round winning moments, or block crucial information to prevent an opponent's advances.

Over the last year we’ve constantly been working towards balancing and creating a formidable smoke. A smoke that does exactly what it says on the tin, and dare I say, we think we’re pretty close. We’ve improved the smoke so that players will no longer be able to turn the edge of the smoke client side using their mouse as a way to gain an advantage. You can see the difference below!

Current smoke

MSP Smoke

The greatest teams and tacticians know exactly how, when, and where to deploy smokes but often you never see the why. Why do smokes act and behave the way they do? Whats the difference between a server and client side smoke and why do we lean one way more than the other. Luckily for all those interested, we have one of Bulkhead’s brightest on standby to talk you through the process, Mr.James Tatum.

Smoke grenades are currently a combination of server and client sided. In order to explain how smokes work, we're going to have to cover some base terms first. Stay with me, and by the end of this you'll understand why we use the combination we do, and why smokes will never be fully server sided.

First up, seeds and pseudo-random number generators. You may have heard that random numbers generated by any form of computer are not truly random. This is true. In any computational environment, we use a seed and an algorithm to generate pseudo-random numbers, which appear to be random enough for most things to get away with. We start with a value, which we call the seed. Let’s say 42. This value is chucked into a mathematical equation and a new value is spat out, let’s say 98. The 42 that was originally used is then modified by a constant (maybe just incrementing by 1) and when the algorithm is ran again on this new number a different value is given, 56. As long as the seed is the same each time you run the algorithm, you will always get the same values out of the random generator in the same order. For this reason, most random generators use the ticks of a system or something equally unique as a seed.

Next we need to talk about particle effects. Particle effects use emitters, which spawn sprites. There can be hundreds or thousands of sprites generated by an emitter, and then we can have multiple emitters in each effect. Each sprite can have some transparency on it, and once the sprites are layering over one another we end up with a cool effect, and the emitters themselves spawn the sprites based on a seed. This is where the pseudo-randomness comes in. Particle effects can be expensive to run, which is why it’s important to keep a close eye on performance when doing anything with particle effects.

Okay, so you understand how “random” works in a computational environment, and you now know the basics of how a particle effect works. Let’s get into what Battalion 1944 does.

When you throw a smoke grenade, the arc and position of the grenade is actually calculated on the server and then networked to the clients. This way, a smoke or explosive grenade can never land somewhere different for different clients. The position where the smoke lands causes the particle effect to be spawned on all clients, but not on the server. This means all clients have the same smoke in the same position, but we don’t have the insane performance cost of networking the smoke from the server to client.

Let’s talk about that performance cost. In order to network a particle effect, you’d have to take each of the generated particles (sprites) on the server and send it’s position to each client. When we consider there can be thousands of particles in a single effect, we might be sending thousands of positions each frame to each client. For 10 players in a server, and at 60fps, for just 1000 particles, that would be 600,000 pieces of positional data sent in a second. We could definitely optimise that down, (and we’d actually need to, because that would block the net driver and disconnect everyone) but you can see how out of control the performance of networked particle effects can get.

The next thing to consider is the seed. If this was different on each client, it would cause the smoke to look different. For this reason, we keep it the same on all clients, at all times. Every time you throw a smoke, it will look the same every time because the seed value is the same.

So that’s how smokes work in Battalion 1944. The position is sent from the server, so it’s the same. The seed is always the same, because it’s a constant value fixed inside the smoke asset itself. The smoke always looks the same, because both the position and the seed are the same for all clients. There would be no benefit to networking the smoke particle effect from the server, but there would be a significant performance cost, and with the nature of Battalion 1944 being a competitive fps, we are always trying to get the best performance and competitive fairness out of everything we do.

Hope that explains everything. If you have any questions, feel free to fire them to @Baker

Boost Hotfix

We're always astounded by what our community can do with the game. Recently we came across some boosts that gave players that utilised it an unfair advantage on Liberation, this has been addressed in the latest hotfix and would like to thank those of you on Reddit that help us combat these issues. Keep up the great work!

Fragadelphia Summer Wartide 2019

Last weekend saw some of the top North American teams and a small European contingent fight it out in the aptly nicknamed "City of Brotherly Love", Philadelphia. The weekend was a spectacle of tight games and competitive spirit. As the story usually goes, only one could come out on top, this time around being that of Sedated Gaming. A marvellous performance in the final coming from the lower bracket playoffs saw them take home the victory and we'd like to take this time to formally congratulate them! Also a massive thank you to Steve of Fragadelphia and every volunteer member of staff at the event that weekend. We can't wait to see you compete again soon!

XP Boost and Mid Season Preview!

Hello troops! Here’s a quick breakdown of what we’re bringing to the frontlines this week.

2 More Maps!

Last week saw the inclusion of both Goldrush and Vanguard into our Headquarters game mode. This week is no different as we look to expand, offering up 2 more maps into the fray! Savoia and Manorhouse v2 are the maps in question taking HQ to the sunny streets of Italy and the muddy French suburbs. By now we’re sure you’re familiar with the hassle and holding dynamics of HQ and don’t doubt you’ll enjoy it a little closer to home.

Wartide XP Boost

Wartide plays an important part in Battalion 1944’s infrastructure, and more importantly we recognise the time you invest. Games often vary in length and we understand the levels of concentration required to play at your best. To reward this, and in light of our recent change to a Level 100 cap. We have significantly increased the XP gain from each match, win or lose! The new XP model for Wartide is now 4 times higher than it was originally, making it easier for those of you who invest the time to grind out for the skins you love.

  • Wartide win (500xp) now worth 2000xp
  • Wartide loss (350xp) now worth 1750xp

Casual XP Boost

For those of you of a more casual nature we’re giving you a helping hand as well by making small changes to the the XP gained from Challenges to alleviate any leveling woes. Remember, we’ll always be looking to evaluate XP gains across the board from our communities helpful feedback. Here’s how Challenges now stack up.

  • Daily Challenges (250xp) will now reward 500xp
  • Quick Fire Challenges (150xp) will now reward 250xp

A Hardline Approach

Often player experiences vary, and here at Bulkhead we’re all for people playing the way they want as long as it doesn’t ruin the experience for those around them. In light of this we will be taking a hardline approach for those that exploit our game modes and XP models in other regions specifically to farm bots and create an unfair and often toxic gaming environment. This often results in an unenjoyable experience for many and with the adequate proof provided to us (video, screenshot or otherwise on a case by case scenario) we will be proactively banning players temporarily to combat any issues that arise. In future, and namely our Mid Season Patch, we will be making changes to completely disincentive and discourage those that abuse the systems in place with added positive reinforcement for playing objectives.

Mid Season Patch - Preview

Yes, we’ve been reading, watching and certainly discussing. The Mid Season Patch is looking to benefit everyone across the board with quality of life features making your daily Battalion sessions a more enjoyable experience. Coming early September you can expect to see small improvements to our in game Buy Menu amongst others, these will feature:

  • See who’s talking whilst the Buy Menu is open
  • Request Donation button
  • Wartide Buy Menu history

The Mid Season Patch holds a number of changes we can't wait for you to see, try, and test. Remember, this is just a small sneak peak of what we have in store to whet your appetites and give you a taste of what's to come.

We’re constantly looking to improve the game as we move forward with our exciting roadmap for Battalion 1944. Which incase you missed it can be found at the link below!

House to Home to HQ

With the inclusion of the new casual game mode ‘Headquarters’ into our Summer Season Update, we’re looking to expand!

x2 New Maps

You may have shook, rattled and rolled with the best of them but our true aim is to see how well we can cater your casual experience. In light of this we’ll be adding 2 extra maps to HQ for you to sink your muddy boots into. Combining the power of the Russian armoury with our relentless HQ mode will give the Axis a true test as you fight your way across the snowy streets of Vanguard and the hotly contested railways and bunkers of Goldrush!

For those who have recently joined us, here’s a quick run down of the gamemode.
In this mode, teams must capture and hold a set point (HQ) that is randomly spawned in the map.. The longer it is held, the more points that team gains. However, the team that holds the headquarters only has 1 life each until the objective is either successfully defended or overrun by the ever respawning enemies!

The best HQ players will coordinate with their team to enforce an ironclad defensive perimeter around a captured headquarters in order to hold it.

With a full week of HQ already under your belt, we don’t doubt you’ve devised a daring divulsion for attacking the enemy and holding down what's rightfully yours and can’t wait to see your approach on our new maps.

We’re constantly looking for feedback and suggestions as we work towards our Mid Season Patch which will include weapon balances, map changes and the likes, alongside the highly anticipated Autumn Season. We can’t wait to hear your opinions moving forward.

Have a great week comrades!

New Community Manager!

First and foremost, hello! Hello to faces fresh and familiar, from humble beginnings to pastures new. My name is Aaron Baker and I have recently been granted the unmissable opportunity to work closely with Battalion 1944 and Bulkhead Interactive as their (and more importantly your) Community Manager.

But what does that mean?

As the new Community Manager I will have the undeniable pleasure of interacting closely with you, the players, for the foreseeable future of Battalion 1944 and future titles. Whether you’re casual, competitive or constantly on the grind - your opinions, views and general well being fall under my jurisdiction. Your experience within our wonderful and ever expanding game is my experience, and it's my responsibility to help, relay and resolve any issues you may face.

Together we have an exciting opportunity to redefine and reevaluate the scape of team shooters from the ground up. Assess feedback and apply the necessary action so that the team here at Bulkhead can create an environment and community to be proud of.

Where do we go now?

The future for Battalion is as intriguing as it is exciting. Moving forward, we're looking to keep supporting Battalion with updates, tournaments, special events, and more content. My firm belief is that community and commonwealth hold the key to a solid foundation in which to prosper organically and will make it my utmost responsibility to cater across the board to help you guys do what you do best - play.

What do those responsibilities entail?

You lot sure do ask a lot of questions.. But that's the point! Its my main focus to be there at the communities beckon call. Boots on the ground, in the trenches, helping and maintaining all those in need. A humble community medic if you will. The first point of contact for all your Battalion needs.

This isn’t to say that the developers like Brammer or Howard don’t plan on being on the frontlines, you’ll still see them in-game and being just as attentive as before, but now they’ll be able to focus a little harder on the day to day game work, whilst I relay back all the gripes, bugs, suggestions and ideas from you guys!.

On top of the general day to day and communicative roles come the tasks of content creation, from simple tutorials for new players all the way up to interesting and exciting events both online and offline for your palpable gaming tastebuds. This could be as mild as helping new tournament organisers find a foothold within the scene or a spicy new event in a number of regions to see the best teams battle it out to reign supreme.

Regardless of what's in the pipeline you can be sure that Battalion is entering a new era with the approachability to match. At the end of the day, our game, is your game and I’m just excited as you to see what the future holds.

How do we contact you?

Contacting me is as easy as can be, through various avenues I’ll be sure to reply on the likes of Twitter and Reddit via @rekabnoraa, though if social media isn’t your thing then feel free to get in touch through the Official Battalion Discord or message me directly - baker#0910.

I look forward to hearing from you all very soon, but first let's kick off this new relationship with something to wet those Wartide whistles. Head over to my twitter, say hello and give my pinned tweet some love. Help me get to know some new faces so I can better help our wonderful community grow. For every 50 retweets I'll even giveaway some of the new Gladiator war chests!

Thanks everybody
Aaron!
