The Winter Update Releases Today!
The Battleborn Winter Update is here! All new features and improvements roll out today across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. From training modes to Command Rank increases, there’s something for everyone in this update. In the words of Gearbox Software Producer, Chris Brock, “I’ve been at Gearbox for 10 years and this is the craziest update we’ve ever done!” Let’s take a closer look at what’s coming:
Since Battleborn launched in May, we have worked hard to bring you new features, characters, modes, and regular updates, some of which are a direct result of the community’s feedback. Although requested features, like training modes, are just now being implemented, they have long been a part of Battleborn’s plans and took time to develop. These features are an integral part of the new Battleborn player experience and characteristic of Gearbox Software’s genre-bending ingenuity. Battleborn is the most ambitious game ever for Gearbox, incorporating inspiration from a legacy of science fiction and fantasy, cartoons, comics, movies, and video games.
Here at Gearbox Software and 2K Games, we are committed to improving Battleborn and creating the best player experience possible through ongoing updates. Like you, we are passionate about Battleborn and dedicated to our community. We are excited to bring you these new features and can’t wait to share even more upcoming content!

NEW PLAYER EXPERIENCE
We’ve added several new features to help new players learn the ropes in Battleborn.
All 25 Core Characters Unlocked! That’s right, 25 badass playable characters, no waiting! With this update, the core 25 characters will be unlocked for all players after completing the Prologue. Learn more about unlocking characters and character select changes in this post.
What about the character unlock challenges? The unlock challenges now award a brand new champion skin upon completion! If you’ve already completed any of the challenges, just jump into a match or mission where that challenge could be completed (Ex. Galilea’s kill 800 minions – complete any match), and you’ll be credited with the corresponding skin upon completing the match or mission.
What if I unlocked a core character with a Hero Key? Don’t fret, you’ll get that Hero Key back! Any Hero key used to unlock one of the 25 core characters will be automatically returned. You can now reuse this key to unlock any of the newest characters 26 – 29, or the 30th character on release.
Story Mode Enhancements Story Mode missions will have more guides and tools to lead you through various areas of the game. The Credit rewards have also been boosted to help you get an early edge on loot packs.
Two New Training Modes Build up your skills before hitting the battlefield in two new training modes: Incursion Tutorial and the Dojo!
Incursion Tutorial: Hone your PVP skills and learn the key elements of competitive play in Battleborn. Your first play-through is solo, but this practice mode can be repeated with groups of up to three players.
Dojo: Take each and every Battleborn hero for a test drive! Learn how to slice, dice, blast, smash, and rocket your way through waves of minions.
Check out each training mode in more detail in this post.
RETURNING PLAYER ENHANCEMENTS
Whether you’re coming back for the second time or your two hundredth, we want to keep making the Battleborn experience fresh and exciting. Listening closely to your feedback, we made some big changes to vastly improve your experience.
User Interface Overhaul Battleborn’s user interface has a whole new look! It is now cleaner, more vibrant, and much easier to find the information you need most. There are UI changes throughout Battleborn, from the starting screen, to the Command center, character select, and even in the menu system. Learn more about the revamped UI here.
Draft Mode This is one of the most exciting new additions! On top of a whole new character select experience, Battleborn will also offer pick/ban drafting in public and private matches. Players and teams can now take turns picking and banning characters to create an excellent competitive roster based on what the other team is choosing.
Normal Draft: Normal draft mode will be available in both public and private matches, allowing each team to take turns voting for their banned characters and creating their roster.
Captain’s Draft: Private matches have an additional draft mode called Captain’s Draft. In these private matches, each team has a captain, so choose wisely! Not only will the captain be directing the team in battle, they also have final say over which characters their team will ban.
Introducing Quests New challenges await with the quest system in Battleborn! Players can now take on new objectives through Main and Daily Quests for a variety of different rewards. Take a look at the new daily quest system here.
Main Quests: Main quests lets you explore different aspects of the modes and missions in Battleborn.
Daily Quests: Unlock a new quest every day! The reward varies depending on the difficulty of the quest, with the hardest quests also having the biggest rewards.
Command Rank and Character Rank Increase Are you the best of the best of the best? Climb the ranks in Battleborn with higher level caps for Command Rank and Character Rank! We pushed the cap to 150 for Command Rank, and rank 20 for each character. Don’t be fooled, this won’t be a cakewalk, but you will get all-new, all- awesome rewards along the way! Learn more about the increase in Command and Character ranks in this post.
Updated In-game Economy The in-game economy has gotten an overhaul as well. All loot pack variations will still drop in Story Mode missions, but only one type of loot pack will be available in the Marketplace: The Core Pack. The Core Pack has better odds for higher rarity gear and has a chance to drop any skin or taunt previously available in Faction packs. Credits will now accumulate faster in public PVP matches, making it easier to grab more Core Packs from the Marketplace. You will also see a bigger variety of Boosts available for Platinum in the Marketplace. For an in-depth look at the changes, watch this.
Performance Enhancements & PS4 Pro Support Like many of you, we are technophiles who love to support new hardware and technology when it benefits our players. With this update, you will experience performance enhancements across the board. Every map, mission, and mode has been touched-up to improve optimization for all platforms, with a particular focus on PS4 Pro’s native 4K capabilities. On PS4 Pro, Battleborn can now run at 1080p at 30fps, 1080p at up to 60fps, or in gorgeous NATIVE 4K at 30fps. Needless to say, this update is an absolute game changer.
The performance and visual improvements don’t end there. PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox One S players now have the option to run Battleborn at 1080p and up to 60fps. PC players do not have the same fps caps as console, but they will experience framerate increases throughout Battleborn.
The Winter Update begins rolling out on all platforms starting at today, January 19, at 2pm PT (5pm ET). This is a massive update but it’s not all Battleborn has in store. Keep reading to see everything that’s already come to Battleborn.

Main Quests & Daily Quests: While battling to save the Universe is a reward in itself, we've always wanted a way to reward coming back and playing daily in Battleborn. We've heard that request a number of times from players as well, so here it is! Quests!
Main Quests are one-time-completion tasks that help train new players, while offering huge bonus Credit rewards. Daily Quests are forever! Come back every day and complete new daily quests for additional rewards.
Players now receive a Main Quest chain and additional Daily Quests that can be completed for rewards
When first logging in, you will receive a Main Quest. Subsequent Quests become available when the previous one has been completed
After completing one match, and then after once per day, you will receive a Daily Quest. No more than 3 Daily Quests can be active at a time, so make sure to complete your Daily Quests promptly!
Improved Character Select: Since before launch, we've wanted to integrate Draft selection mode into competitive play. To do that, we needed to overhaul Character Select to handle different types of character selection depending on which mode you're about to play. With the Winter Update, character select is completely reskinned and cleaned up, and is now more versatile than ever!
Players may now choose from up to 5 different character select styles in Versus game modes
Captains Draft 5v5
Ban Pick 5v5
Quick Select
Chaos Rumble
Classic
Character select is now broken into multiple phases, which depend on the character select style
Players can now reselect their characters during the selection phase by navigating to the character list and backing out of their selection
Training: One of the most consistent requests we've received from players was for help understanding the unique game modes of Battleborn. We've tackled that in a few distinct ways. The new Versus Training mode uses Nova to walk you through many of the basics of competitive gameplay, including Helixes, bases, buildables, minions, sentries, and one of the most overlooked features - teleporting back to base!
We also heard that players wanted a way to try out characters outside of a match. So, we've created the Dojo! Jump in, starting at level 5 with 100,000 Shards, and practice your skills on waves of minions. Level up quickly and play with combinations of abilities. Tap Nova when you're ready to leave and reset the Dojo.
Added a Versus tutorial, featuring concepts from the Incursion game mode
Players will initially be able to access a single-player Incursion tutorial to learn the basics of the game mode
After completing the tutorial, players will be able to access a training experience that matches 3 players against 3 bots
Added a single-player Dojo training map
Characters: General
The base 25 characters are now unlocked after completing the Prologue.
Previous character unlock challenges now reward a special skin for that character instead of unlocking the character. The initial 7 characters receive the skin unlocks after completing the Prologue.
Ambra
Added a team color outline to Sunspots
Added team color FX to the Extinction Event diamond
Caldarius
The character team wanted to increase viability of close range attacks with Caldarius and focused on improving augmentations to the melee attack. In addition, we modified some of the power growth of Flashbang without reducing any of the core functionality.

Miko
Increased the health of the Fungus Among Us mushroom by 50% (from 428 to 650 at level 5)
Montana
We updated Montana's weapon with some quality of life adjustments. We want to allow Montana players to have an easier time hitting thinner characters so we increased accuracy bonuses. In addition, we wanted to give Montana players more options when managing minigun heat.
Increased heat reduction while Hailstorm is active
Swapped the Helix locations of Level 9 Mutation Icy Resolve with Level 4 Left Helix Augment The Cooler
Increased the accuracy bonus of Level 1 Right Helix Augment Weather Man from 30% to 50%
Changed the functionality of Level 3 Right Helix Augment Gatling Grease augment
At max heat, the cooldown rate of Montana's Lumberjack Dash is greatly increased for a short period of time. +50% Cooldown Rate Over 3 Seconds

Changed the functionality of Level 9 Mutation The Cooler

Reyna
•
Allies can be targeted by Shield Booster while aiming slightly further away from them
•
Reduced the delay before Shield Booster can be used after being primed
Thorn
The character team wants to improve the archery fantasy of Thorn so focused on augmentations to promote firing more arrows. We also felt that Thorn lost a lot of damage with the recent Blight changes so we wanted to return some of it via augmentations.
Increased the zoom of Thorn's secondary attack
Swapped the Helix locations of Level 6 Left Helix Augment Brutal Blight with Level 1 Left Helix Augment Swampfoot
Swapped the Helix locations of Level 2 Right Helix Augment Fell Wind with Level 8 Right Helix Augment Distant Blight
Replaced Level 2 Mutation Blightbrawler with The Wait Is Over
The final tick of Blight deals greatly increased damage. 300% Damage on Final Tick
In addition to propelling Thorn backwards, Level 3 Right Helix Augment Burst Propulsion now also increases quick melee damage once every 2 seconds

Increased the shield penetration of the Level 7 Mutation Phasing Arrows from 25% to 75%
Modified the way Level 9 Left Helix Augment Archer's Boon restores health. Thorn now regenerates 48 Health over a short period of time for each Volley arrow that damages an enemy.
Incursion:
Added a Nova callout when the M7.Super Sentry is destroyed
Meltdown: Meltdown has been a popular game mode, but we felt that it had some issues. It was a bit longer than we wanted it to be, it was hard to get a comeback, and the ending was somewhat anti-climactic.
So, we've updated Meltdown to a new version called Meltdown: Finale!
While you're still helping MINREC escort minions through recycling grinders to appease his mad-robot-godhood, you now require less score to advance the mode to its new Finale stage! During the Finale, gigantic Ultra Minions spawn and you only need to get one of those Ultra Minions through a recycling gate to win! While the leaders will still have advantages here, there's now more of a chance for a dramatic swing in the late game.
Once either team reaches 300 score or 20 minutes have passed, the Meltdown Finale begins!
Ultra Minions begin spawning instead of normal minions for the remainder of the game. The first team to score a single Ultra Minion into the enemy's final grinder wins
The team with the greater score after the initial Meltdown phase receives advantages in the Finale based off of the size of their lead, such as stronger Ultra minions and an uncontested first wave of Ultra Minions
Ultra Minions become stronger in each successive wave
Capture: Many players have appreciated Capture as a fast brawl-type mode in Battleborn. We felt, though, that Capture was failing to capture what is unique about Battleborn - the strategy of leveling, activating gear, and working with a team to hold points. So, we've re-worked the mode to give players a much faster start, and have re-worked experience awards in the mode to better reward the types of play that we feel make Capture interesting.
Players now start at Level 3
Players now start with 500 Shards
Reduced the amount of time required to capture or neutralize a point from 8 seconds to 6 seconds
Increased Experience bonuses for capturing, occupying, and neutralizing capture points
Varelsi Scouts no longer drop Helix pickups when killed
Varelsi Scouts now drop 150 Shards when killed
Varelsi Scouts now provide the entire killing team with significant Experience
Varelsi Scouts no longer gain brief invulnerability while turning
Reduced the respawn time of small and medium Shard clusters from 30 seconds to 15 seconds
Face-Off:
Improved the pathing of Varelsi enemies
Players now receive a Nova callout when a team collects 500 masks
Snowblind: Reduced the value of Shards near the southern Tier 3 Varelsi camp
Story Missions:
Players can now acquire Diamond score medals in the 8 original Story missions. Acquiring a new Diamond rating awards a awards a Legendary Gear Pack, up to 4 per mission (Normal, Normal Hardcore, Advanced, and Advanced Hardcore).
The Algorithm
Increased the damage Geoff takes from area of effect attacks
The health of ISIC's head slowly drains for the duration of the second phase of the Magnus boss fight
The Experiment
Reduced the aim assistance when targeting Antem
The Void's Edge
Players can no longer become stuck in the Varelsi Void if Deande's Holotwin decoy is alive at the end of the Void phase
Players can no longer become stuck in the Varelsi Void by activating a teleport skill during the Void phase transition
The number of activation pads required to start the Conservator boss encounter no longer scales up with player count
Gear and Economy: While loot has been fairly generous in Story Missions, we felt (and heard!) that Versus matches were less satisfying in the rewards players earned. So, we're changing several things in order to help Versus play be more equitable to story missions in terms of what you can earn.
We're more than doubling the average amount of credits you earn per hour. We're also consolidating loot packs for sale in the Marketplace into one new loot pack - the Core Pack. The Core Pack is much more expensive than our previous Common Pack, but it now guarantees at least one Rare piece of gear, and has a much better chance of giving higher rarity gear from its three additional slots. The Core Pack has been priced at 2,500 credits, which means you'll be buying these fairly regularly, after a few matches of play.
We like the excitement of opening packs, and wanted to focus that in, while reducing the complexity of trying to understand a marketplace full of packs with subtle differences.
Dramatically increased the amount of credits earned per hour when playing Versus matches.
Players can now purchase the Core Loot Pack, which has replaced the Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic and Faction Loot Packs in the Marketplace
Each pack contain 4 pieces of gear (one of which will be Rare or better), and also has a chance to drop a skin or taunt
Packs can be purchased for 2,500 Credits
Previously acquired Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary, and Faction Loot Packs will not be modified by this change, and can still be earned through Story Missions, gaining Character Ranks, and completing Operations with 100 Ops points.
Legendary gear is exciting and powerful, but over the last few months, we've discovered a number of ways that gear can be combined with other skills or systems to be more powerful than intended. Sometimes, the best temporary solutions we could offer were to reduce stat numbers to make those gear items almost useless. Conversely, many pieces never lived up to their potential, and as a result did not warrant the activation cost of a Legendary item.
With the Winter Update, we've performed a full audit of our Legendary gear and have made a number of changes and enhancements to attempt to tune each Legendary item to be balanced and useful.
Arcship Buoy: Reduced the cooldown time of the Legendary effect from 30 seconds to 15 seconds

WHAT ELSE IS IN THE WINTER UPDATE?
What, exactly, is so insane about the upcoming Battleborn features? A new, improved player experience loaded with modes that new players will love – and a load of slick refinements that our veteran players can get behind. Here’s a quick breakdown of what’s in store.
NEW PLAYER EXPERIENCE Whether you’re new to the game or just want to hone your skills for multiplayer, we’ve added several key features.
All 25 Core Characters Unlocked! 25 badass playable characters, no waiting! You’re eager to find your favorite, so get to it! With this update, the core 25 characters will be unlocked for all players after completing the Prologue.
What about the character unlock challenges? These challenges now award a brand new skin upon completion! We’ve also adjusted several challenges to be more attainable.
Main Quests – Story Mode
Story Mode missions will have more guides and tools to lead your through various areas of the game. The Credit rewards have also been boosted to help you get an early edge on loot packs
Two New Training Modes
Incursion Tutorial: Build up your PVP skills and learn the key elements of competitive play in Battleborn. Your first play-through is solo, but this practice mode can be repeated with groups of up to three players.
Dojo: Take each and every Battleborn hero for a test drive! Learn how to slice, dice, blast, smash, and rocket your way through waves of minions.
RETURNING PLAYER ENHANCEMENTS We’ve talked to many players who have put hundreds of hours into the game. Whether you’re coming back for the second time or your two hundredth, we are all about replayability. Listening closely to your feedback, we made some big moves to continue keeping the Battleborn experience fresh for you.
User Interface Changes:Battleborn’s user interface gets a major facelift. Cleaner, more vibrant, and much easier to find the information you need most. You’ll see UI changes throughout Battleborn, from the starting screen, to the Command center, character select, and even some menu changes.
Draft Mode: This is one of the most exciting new additions! In Draft Mode, teams and players take turns picking and banning characters trying to find the perfect match-ups and counters for what the other team is choosing.
Introducing Daily Quests: The action doesn’t end when you take down Rendain. Check back daily for new objectives and rewards across both Story Mode and Competitive Multiplayer Mode.
Command Rank and Character Rank Increase: Keep on growing your Command and Character ranks! We pushed the cap to 150 for Command Rank, and rank 20 for each character, with all-new rewards!
Updated In-game Economy: We’ve overhauled the Credits system and how loot packs are made available, particularly in Competitive Multiplayer matches. Credits will now accumulate faster in public PVP matches, making it easier to grab more loot packs from the Marketplace. But not for leavers – they are out of luck and will not receive any rewards. You see, nobody likes a quitter.
Loot Packs: All loot pack variations will still drop in Story Mode missions, but only one type of loot pack will be available in the Marketplace: The Core Pack. The Core Pack has better odds for higher rarity gear and has a chance to drop any skin or taunt previously available in Faction packs.
Boosts: A bigger variety of Boosts will become available for Platinum in the marketplace.
Sounds pretty awesome, right? Come check out the update this Thursday! We’ll be holding a livestream for a peek at the next Story Operation.

Brace yourselves, Battleborn – the first Story Operation launches on Thursday, October 13! You’ll relive the third Thrall uprising that sparked a revolution within the Jennerit Empire. Run through the slums of the planet Tempest and see what motivated Attikus, firsthand.
If you’re not familiar with them, Story Operations are side stories that expand upon Battleborn hero lore, dropping you right into the middle of the action.
In this Story Op, “Attikus and the Thrall Rebellion” gives you Attikus’ perspective with a film noir flair. Play as any of the Battleborn heroes to fight your way through the streets and rooftops of the Tempest slums.
Experience these highly-replayable Story Operations solo or co-op with up to two buddies. Each time you relive the Thrall Rebellion, you can unlock new lore, skins, titles, and taunts. Not to mention all the dialogue, enemies, and objectives that change depending on your current playthrough.

Face-Off Mode Comes to Battleborn October 13
A brand new FREE Competitive Multiplayer Mode is coming to Battleborn on Thursday, October 13! Storm the battlefield in 5v5 matches and hold the line against the invading Varelsi. Of course killing Varelsi makes them mad – Be ready for intense, multi-phase battles! Steal masks from enemy players and be quick to pick up masks your teammates left behind. Do you think you have what it takes to outpace the enemy?
Before you answer that, watch check out last week’s Gearbox Software livestream for more details.
OBJECTIVE
In these 15-minute, 5v5 battles you’ve got to quickly take down the Varelsi. As you drop them, they drop masks. Collect those Varelsi masks to score points. The first team to 500 wins. Sounds simple, right? Well, first you need to get those masks to the depository in the center of the map.
However, since the enemy team is trying to do the same thing, you must balance between helping your team collect masks and preventing the enemy team from doing the same thing. All the while, the unrelenting Varelsi get tougher.
GAMEPLAY
It’s hard to believe the Varelsi will just let you get away with slaughter. As the match progresses, and players level up, the Varelsi also get tougher. Each match has multiple phases, so expect intense boss battles as the Varelsi attempt to get even and throw a wrench into each team’s plans.
Face-Off takes place on Capture maps – Temples, Snowblind, and Outback – with some key changes. There will be up to six Varelsi spawn camps in different locations around each map. The mask depository is located near the center of each map, at frequently contested points. Private bot matches will not be available at release but may be an addition further down the line.
One more thing to look out for in Face-Off are buildable MX.Headhunter assassins! Tough, fast, and vicious, MX.Headhunters will strike down enemy players and help foil the enemy’s mask collecting progress. Similar to Super Minions, Headhunters are buildables that can be purchased in a match with Shards.
COLLECTING MASKS
There are two ways to get masks: Pick up dropped masks or steal them from enemy players. Varelsi drop masks upon death. Race against the other team to pick them up and get them to the depository. If a mask-carrying player gets taken out before reaching the depository, they will lose all of their masks upon death and a portion of those masks can be picked up by other players. While Varelsi drop a limited number of masks at a time, players can carry quite an armful. It’s up to you to help protect your overburdened teammates make it to the depository. The more they have, the bigger a target they may become. Same goes for the enemy team – Killing enemy players is a nifty way to steal masks, so keep an eye out for those carrying a heavy load of masks.
Players also drop all of their masks when teleporting. If you need to go back to base in a hurry, make sure to teleport nearby an ally so they can snag your dropped masks and get them to the depository.
