Playing Bubble Tag before the Apocalypse

Battle Pass Season 9: Apocalypse is days away. Ready yourself with knowledge of the end times by checking out the reveals from us and our partners over on brawlhalla.com/battlepass.

Gift your last chocolates and mail your last Valhallentine’s cards because this is the last week of this lovely 2024 Event.

We also thought we’d let you know that Azoth built Dander a new cat tower and window hammock. What a nice Valhallentine’s gift. OH… Dander brought Azoth a few lost treasures he found while patrolling Valhalla. Maybe if Azoth returns them to their rightful owner he’ll be a step closer to breaking his curse. Good kitty. 😺

NEW TEST FEATURE

In continuing to update older or more simplistic Legends with new tools, we have added a Charge Variant to Sentinel’s Side Hammer. Years ago, this Signature was excellent at surprising opponents from a distance with a powerful leaping strike, but over time the speed of the game has increased and that distance has become less impactful. So as a Test Feature, when this Signature is charged past a brief duration, Sentinel will perform a double swing that travels a much greater distance. Leave us your feedback on this and other Test Features in Discord, Reddit, or any of our other official social channels.

Sentinel Side Hammer Rework
  • Adds a charged variant in which Sentinel travels farther with a second swing of his Hammer.
  • The Uncharged Side Hammer remains the same.

UPDATED IMAGE RENDER TOOL

We’ve added Signature Attacks to the image render tool! Epic Skins and Crossovers display their unique swapped Sigs and Visual FX.

BALANCE

This patch contains the last off-season balance adjustments and sets the stage for Brawlhalla Esports Year Nine. This includes Seven’s first balance pass, which makes her legal for use in official tournaments.

Battle Boots
We have decreased the Fixed Force of the Battle Boots Recovery to offset the distance it can carry a target before the final knockback. This will result in fewer early knockouts during aerial juggles.

  • Battle Boots Recovery: Decreased Force from 60 Fixed/42 Variable to 54 Fixed/42 Variable.

Blasters
The Blasters Neutral Light now deals slightly greater damage to better match its required accuracy and total commitment. We have also decreased the Recover time on miss for the Blasters Side Light to bring the risk in line with other similar attacks on other weapons.

  • Blasters Neutral Light: Increased Damage from 15 to 16.
  • Blasters Side Light: Decreased total Recover time on miss from 14 Fixed/9 Variable to 13 Fixed/9 Variable.

Greatsword
The Greatsword Side Air now has significantly greater Recover time on miss to better match its total threat coverage and utility.
  • Greatsword Side Air: Increased total Recover time on miss while in the air from 7 Fixed/10 Variable to 10 Fixed/10 Variable.

Dusk
Dusk’s Neutral Spear now has greater Recover time on miss to allow wider opportunities to counter this anti-air Signature.
  • Dusk Neutral Spear: Increased total Recover time on miss from 13 to 15.

Seven
The electric version of Seven’s Neutral Spear now has greater Minimum Charge time to open a dodge window after a Spear Down Light. We have also decreased its Force to better match its quick total duration. The fire version of Seven’s Neutral Spear now has greater Time to Hit to better match its threat coverage, and has an equal increase to its Minimum Charge time to keep its minimum Hit Window identical. The electric version of Seven’s Side Spear now has less Stun and significantly less Force to open dodge windows at certain health ranges and to bring the knockout potential closer in line with the attack’s overall utility. The fire version of Seven’s Side Spear now has slightly less Force to be closer in line with other similar Signature attacks.
  • Seven Neutral Spear: Increased Minimum Charge time of the electric mode from 11 to 12; Decreased Force of the electric mode from 58 Fixed/54 Variable to 55 Fixed/51 Variable; Increased Time to Hit of the fire mode version from 16 to 18; Increased Minimum Charge time of the fire mode version from 26 to 28.
  • Seven Side Spear: Decreased Stun of the electric mode from 32 to 31; Decreased Force of the electric mode from 58 Fixed/47 Variable to 58 Fixed/42 Variable; Decreased Force of the fire mode version from 58 Fixed/50 Variable to 58 Fixed/47 Variable.

Wu Shang
Wu Shang’s Down Gauntlets now has less Maximum Charge time to reduce the variable release window of the palm strike for more reliable counterattacks against this Signature.
  • Wu Shang Down Gauntlets: Decreased Maximum Charge time from 65 to 55.

Zariel
The first hit of Zariel’s Neutral Bow now applies less Stun against secondary targets, allowing any non-grabbed opponents a chance to escape or interrupt Zariel before the final arrow shot.
  • Zariel Neutral Bow: Decreased Stun of the initial attack from 25 to 15; Removed the AoE Hit Window that could strike secondary targets during the grab transition.

GAME IMPROVEMENTS

BOT IMPROVEMENTS

We have another wave of bot improvements with more to come. In this patch, we have improved the bot pathing on most Maps. Some larger Maps and special Game Mode Maps have not been improved this time around. This will help fix much unintended bot behavior.
  • The bots ability to move around the Map has been improved on the majority of Maps, helping reduce some awkward behavior.
  • Upgraded a bot’s ability to distinguish when it’s time to grab a Weapon to avoid them fighting unarmed for too long.

BUG FIXES

Gameplay
  • Fixed a bug where Seven wouldn’t count towards Missions like Wearing a Hat properly.
  • Fixed a bug that was causing bots to have an extremely high chance of throwing their Weapon when far away from their target.
  • Fixed an issue with the Robot Dance Emote where the full animation wasn’t playing on tap.
  • Fixed a bug when Seven was KO’d with her Spear in fire mode, the next time she picked up a Spear, the fire mode attachment would be visible in light attacks despite being in electric mode.
  • Fixed a bug where random Emotes weren’t working online.
  • Fixed a bug where players were sometimes unable to lock in as Seven.
  • Fixed crashes on Kung Foot and Volleybrawl.
  • Fixed a bug where if a player gets hit within 2 frames of their chase Dodge after a Gravity Cancel they get the grounded Dodge cooldown.

UI
  • Fixed a bug where player names in matchmaking scoreboard screen were no longer graying out after that player left

31, Ranked Season 31

The roar of the crowd still echoes after Ranked Season 30. Brawlers, you have earned Glory, Rank, and, most importantly of all, approval from the crowds watching the Grand Tournament. Songs will be sung of your endeavors, and you have already been handsomely rewarded. However, don’t let all the praise and spoils go to your head. There are still battles to be fought in Ranked Season 31!

We hope to see y’all duking it out in this brand new Ranked Season. Good luck!

To catch the latest Brawlhalla news and content, be sure to follow us on Twitter, Twitch, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Discord, and TikTok!

At the beginning of every season, there is a soft Elo reset, your placement matches are reset, and you receive Glory – the currency you earn by playing Ranked.

We hope you enjoy the new season!

Soft Elo Reset Formula

Soft Elo Reset is based on your current Elo at the end of the season.

1v1 and 2v2 Personal Rating
  • Under 1400: New Elo = Old Elo
  • Over 1400: New Elo = 1400 + (Old Elo – 1400) / (3 – (3000 – Old Elo) / 800)

2v2 Team and Legend Rating
  • 2v2 Team & Legend Ratings have been brought closer to 750.
  • Under 2000: Elo = (Elo + 375) / 1.5
  • Over 2000, we aggressively brought you back down as a way of resetting the top tiers.

Glory Earnings Calculation

Glory earned is based on a combination of your Highest Peak Rating (highest 1v1, 2v2, team, or Legend rating/Elo) and total Wins. This was designed in order to reward both skill and dedication for those who pursue Glory.

You gain 20 Glory per win up to 150 wins, which gets you 3000 Glory. After 150 wins, each subsequent win gives you slightly less.

Note: There is a minimum requirement of 10 games played to be eligible for Glory based on your rating. For help estimating your Glory Gained or New Elo after the reset go to: brawlhalla.com/glory-calculator/

Placement Matches
Players beginning their Ranked climb have 10 placement matches to better determine their skill level and starting Elo.
  • Each season, for Ranked 1v1 and Ranked 2v2, your first 10 matches will serve as placement matches that will have a greater effect on your rating than normal games. Your rating will be hidden until after you have completed your placement matches for that queue.

Valhallan Rank
Valhallan Rank will open on January 24th. To become Valhallan, players must be Ranked in Diamond, have at least 100 wins during the Ranked season, and attain a rating among the top players in their region.

Each region has a limited number of Valhallan positions:
  • US-E / EU – Top 150
  • SA – Top 100
  • SEA / US-W – Top 50
  • AUS / JPN – Top 25
  • SAF – Top 15
  • ME – Top 25

These numbers are based on each region’s population and will be considered for adjustment on a seasonal basis.

Unique Valhallan Rewards

After ranking up, players will immediately receive the Valhallan Avatar, Loading Frame, and Season Title Reward.

Valhallan Loading Frame:
  • Unlike other Ranked Loading Frames, the Valhallan Loading Frame can only be used while the player is currently in the Valhallan rank. Players are granted it immediately upon achieving Valhallan, and if they are pushed out of Valhallan rank, the Loading Frame will be revoked when the daily reset occurs (9am UTC/5am EDT/2am PDT).

Valhallan Title Reward:
  • Players are awarded a Title immediately upon achieving Valhallan. Each season will have a unique Valhallan Title Reward. The Title is never revoked, regardless of rank.

Valhallan Avatar:
  • Instead of an Avatar that upgrades at the end of each season, the Valhallan Avatar is awarded immediately upon achieving Valhallan.
  • The Valhallan Avatar has two states: active and inactive. The active Avatar is rewarded immediately upon achieving the Valhallan rank but can be downgraded to the inactive “Fallen” state if players fall out of Valhallan rank when the daily reset occurs.
  • To reactivate the Avatar, players need to reach the Valhallan rank again. Players will retain ownership of the Avatar between seasons, but it will be in the “Fallen” state at the start of every season.

Ranked Borders from Season 30

If you placed Gold, Platinum, or Diamond at any point in the season, you are given a Ranked border based on your highest rank that other players can see in the match preview screen. These will last for one season and will be updated again after the new season comes to a close.
Your border from any previous season does not carry over or have any impact on your current border reward.

Ranked Avatars from Season 30

Ranked Avatars include prestigious versions for those who’ve placed in high ranks during previous seasons. For example, if you placed in Platinum last season and Gold this season, you’ll receive the upgraded versions of the Competitor’s Badge and Gold Emblem. You will still have your original Platinum Emblem Avatar from previous seasons.

You must play a minimum of 10 games to receive Ranked Avatars / Borders at ANY rank.
  • Competitor’s Badge: Awarded to anyone who plays 10 Ranked Games or more.
  • Gold Emblem: Awarded to players who finish at Gold or above.
  • Platinum Emblem: Awarded to players who finish at Platinum or above.
  • Diamond Emblem: Awarded to players who finish at Diamond.

Upgraded versions of Ranked Avatars are awarded to those who have earned the same Avatar in any previous season.

For players who have reached the 5th Tier of an Avatar by reaching a certain rank or higher for five total seasons: the 5th Tier of that Avatar will stay in your inventory permanently! Congratulations on your achievements!

The 6th Tier Avatar, for those who have reached a certain rank or higher for six total seasons, will take on a brand new look! These Avatars will grow more and more prestigious with each subsequent seasonal repeat up to Tier 10, at which point the Tier 10 Avatar will remain in your inventory permanently.

In short, every 5 Tiers of Avatars, you’ll keep the most awesome, most decked out version permanently, and then start work on a new version for subsequent tiers for 6-10, 11-15, and so on.
Players can continue to earn Glory mid-season and earn exclusive Title Rewards. With every new season, the Seasonal Ranked Queue’s Elo will do a full reset.

Exclusive Ranked Rewards – Skyforged & Goldforged!

Beyond glory there is immortality! In Mallhalla, in the “Ranked” tab, players can spend their hard-earned Glory to purchase Skyforged Colors, Weapons, UI Theme, Emotes, and Sidekicks. Skyforged Colors are only usable on Legends that have reached level 5 or greater.

For Patch 8.03, we’ve added new supported languages to Brawlhalla: Turkish and Latin-American Spanish!

To change the language in-game, go to the “Options” tab from the Player Menu at the top right of the screen, select “System Settings” and toggle through the left/right arrows next to “Language” until you find your preferred one.

We want these new supported languages to work best for you, the players that will be using them, so we’re treating them the same way we treat other Experimental features. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let us know on our socials like Twitter and Discord.

Bots have many different personality traits now! Some like to jump more, some like to aggress and dash, or maybe you fight a Bot that likes to stay back and see what you do!  Depending on the difficulty level, the Bots will have better control of their movement options and have many different levels and combinations of these personality traits and more.

Easier Bots (“Easy” through “Medium”) are able to be defeated/overpowered much quicker.

More difficult Bots (“Hard” through “Chosen”)
  • Now utilize Dash and fast falling in ways they didn't before and make use of more subtle movement mechanics.
  • Now have the ability to “Weapon starve” (depending on the Bot) in different ways.

Beyond Glory, there is immortality! Get ready to collect your Glory and begin the Ranked climb once more.

Are you ready to take your place among the Legends and earn the highly coveted Valhallan Rank? The battles begin on January 10th, 2024!

With the Brawlhalla World Championship behind us, we are now in the official esports offseason. The esports offseason is a time where we can be more experimental with competitive gameplay updates.

During this offseason, you can look forward to new competitive features like the recently graduated Backdash update, a new tournament Map pool, and more frequent balance changes leading up to the start of Esports Year Nine. With each change, we will be sure to monitor feedback closely.

In Patch 8.01, the tournament Map pool was updated to feature a selection of Maps that encourage counter-picking during a best-of-three or best-of-five set in competitive play.

Competitors can now choose from a diverse selection of Maps that fit specific platform archetypes. The increased Map pool size and variety of archetypes creates situations for players to ban opponents to the kinds of Maps they want to play on. Counter picking should now have a more tangible impact on the Map pool than previously.

Koji Sensei has 2 new challenges for you to start practicing! Introducing “Two Fundamental Hammer KO Combos” and “Two Fundamental Sword Combos”. These join the ever-expanding preview for Brawlhalla’s “Challenge” System.

Two Fundamental Hammer KO Combos
  • The Hammer is a great Weapon for KO-ing your opponent. Here are two fundamental Hammer KO combos that are true. Try these when your opponent's damage is high enough. Notice that one KO's from the side and the other from the ceiling. Be aware of your position when choosing which to use!
Two Fundamental Sword Combos
  • It's always smart to know what your tools are for KO-ing your opponent. Here are two fundamental Sword KO combos that are true. It's important to note that one KO's from the side and the other from the ceiling. Choose wisely when you are in battle!

This balance pass is the first of several during the esports off-season. This one contains a few targeted changes at reining in certain damage-specific combo starters on overperforming weapons, while providing improvements to some key tools that were shown to be lacking during the Autumn Championship and Autumn Royale. This patch also contains Loki's first balance pass, which makes him legal for all official Brawlhalla tournaments.

Battle Boots
The Battle Boots Side Light now has slightly less rear threat coverage at the beginning of the Hit Window, allowing more consistent dodges through this attack. Similarly, we have decreased the threat coverage of the Battle Boots Down Light. We have also decreased the Hit Window for more reliable dodges and counterattacks against the Down Light, and we have increased the Recover time on miss to keep the total duration of the attack the same.
  • Battle Boots Side Light: Decreased threat coverage toward the rear of the attack.
  • Battle Boots Down Light: Decreased threat coverage at the beginning of the attack; Decreased Hit Window from 5 to 4; Increased total Recover time on miss from 15 Fixed/15 Variable to 16 Fixed/15 Variable.

Blasters
The Blasters Neutral Air is an important tool in continuing pressure against an airborne opponent, as well as providing a defensive option when recovering back to stage. We have brought the Time to Hit slightly closer to its previous value to aid in these situations, given the inherent dead-zones in the Blasters’ far-reaching threat coverage.
  • Blasters Neutral Air: Decreased Time to Hit from 10 to 9.

Gauntlets
The Gauntlets Neutral Light would previously take too long to score knockouts, even when the opponent was far into red health, so we have increased the Force to provide more timely knockouts when compared to other similar attacks. The Gauntlets Neutral Air now has significantly less Stun to require tighter timing on team combos, to provide wider escape windows when off-stage against this weapon, and to open a dodge window between this attack and the Neutral Light.
  • Gauntlets Neutral Light: Increased Force from 44 Fixed/40 Variable to 46 Fixed/42 Variable.
  • Gauntlets Neutral Air: Decreased Stun from 16 to 12.

Greatsword
We have reduced the Time to Hit for the Greatsword Neutral Finisher from Down Bridge for more consistent strikes against opponents who opt for a dash between Greatsword chain attacks. The Greatsword Down Air had too much freedom of movement for its range and utility, so we have reduced the maximum allowed acceleration to be closer in line with other similar attacks.
  • Greatsword Neutral Finisher (from Down Bridge): Decreased Time to Hit from 15 to 14; Slightly increased threat coverage near the user.
  • Greatsword Down Air: Slightly decreased maximum allowed acceleration during the attack; Greatly decreased maximum allowed acceleration on miss.

Orb
The Orb Recovery now maintains the upper range of its Stun value for a longer portion of the Hit Window. This provides a more consistent frame advantage for most of the Hit Window. We have also increased the lower range of Force near the end of this attack for more consistent knockouts when striking at the very end of the Hit Window.
  • Orb Recovery: Increased Force from a range of 75~60 Fixed/44~36 Variable to a range of 75~60 Fixed/44~40 Variable; Hit Window maintains the upper range of 35~25 Stun for a longer period of time.

Rocket Lance
The Rocket Lance Neutral Air's Stun now has a sharper decrease over the course of its duration and a slightly lower starting value. This will maintain a more steady frame advantage value regardless of what part of the arc strikes the opponent, which opens dodge windows between the Neutral Air and follow-up attacks.
  • Rocket Lance Neutral Air: Decreased Stun from a range of 32~27 to a range of 29~18.

Scythe
The Scythe Down Air now has less Force for the forward version to better match the backwards Active Input version. This decrease in Force maintains the dodge window between the Down Air and other follow-up attacks for a broader range of health values, for more reliable escapes when recovering back to the stage.
  • Scythe Down Air: Decreased Force of the forward aerial version from 52 Fixed/30 Variable to 52 Fixed/24 Variable; Decreased Force of the forward grounded version from 20 Fixed/30 Variable to 20 Fixed/24 Variable.

Spear
We have decreased the Stun of Spear Side Light to widen dodge windows between large follow-up attacks such as the Neutral Air or certain Signatures, as well as requiring a tighter input from the user to consistently follow-up with a Down Light. The Spear Side Air has also received a decrease in Stun to open a dodge window between follow-up attacks, like the Neutral Light.
  • Spear Side Light: Decreased Stun from 19 to 17.
  • Spear Side Air: Decreased Stun from 22 to 20.

Azoth
Azoth's Neutral Bow would often be too slow to catch an opponent's high degree of aerial mobility, so it now has a faster Minimum Charge time for more reliable use as an anti-air.
  • Azoth Neutral Bow: Decreased Minimum Charge time from 15 to 13.

Loki
Loki's Side Scythe was too quick for its total threat coverage and power, so we have increased its Minimum Charge time and Recover time to allow more room to dodge and respond against this attack. We have also decreased its maximum vertical threat coverage to make it easier to contest from above. Loki's Down Katars has received a decrease in Damage to better match its overall range and utility.
  • Loki Side Scythe: Decreased maximum vertical threat coverage; Increased Minimum Charge time from 13 to 16; Increased total Recover time from 20 to 22.
  • Loki Down Katars: Decreased Damage from 24 to 22.

Sentinel
Sentinel's Down Hammer has received an increase in Damage to better match its long Time to Hit and telegraphed movement.
  • Sentinel Down Hammer: Increased total Damage from 22 to 25.

Sir Roland
Sir Roland's Side Sword now has a faster Minimum Charge time to better match its lengthy commitment and duration. We have also shifted the Damage to focus on the final hit, as it would previously deal far too little Damage when striking with only the stab. Sir Roland's Down Sword now has greater Force since it would previously take too long to score knockouts with the middle and end of the attack when compared to other similar attacks.
  • Sir Roland Side Sword: Decreased Minimum Charge time from 15 to 13; Shifted Damage to be mostly focused on the final hit.
  • Sir Roland Down Sword: Increased Force from 68 Fixed/48 Variable to 68 Fixed/50 Variable.

Yumiko
It was previously too easy to maneuver around Yumiko's Down Bow projectiles, so we have reduced the Recover time of this Signature so the user can apply more consistent pressure after using this unique attack.
  • Yumiko Down Bow: Decreased Fixed Recover time from 18 to 16.

Gameplay
  • Players can now ban two Maps individually in all queues!
  • All platforms have a new option in System Settings: Spectate Delay. Select “Speed” for a 1 second delay, or “quality” for a 3 second delay.

UI
  • Chests are now available in one tab in Mallhalla!

Gameplay
  • Fixed a bug where players using a controller could not back out from the "rename local player" menu.
  • Fixed a bug where Gadget drop shadows were visible before the Gadget spawned.
  • Fixed a bug where the achievement/trophy for playing 30 Matchmade games required the player to play 50 Matchmade games.

UI
  • Fixed a bug where players could not pan or zoom the camera while paused in replay mode.
