A new year - a new trailer, this time we’re focusing on the game’s story! [previewyoutube="xcP8_pH4VTA;full"]
Game Tip - Targeting
Last week, our game tip segment spoke about movement and how the soldiers under your command are aware of their surroundings. This week, we are expanding on this by looking at who they target if multiple enemies are in range.
When multiple enemies are in range, the solider will make a decision on who to engage. The most important factors are the probability of hitting the enemy and how far the enemy is. After that, there are other factors that can come into play such as the type of weapon the enemy is using (heavy weapons will draw more attention), if the target is shooting at the solider, and how much the solider would need to turn to face their opponent.

Be sure to remember these tips as they will help master the game!

The Developer Diaries on YouTube
As we’re reaching the end of the development process for Broken Lines (we’re mainly sorting out bugs now) we’ve begun to put together a few developer diary videos where we talk about the various mechanics of the game.
Other than giving you a good look at what the game plays like, these videos will help you understand how the game works, and give you the edge that you need if you want to challenge the game’s harder modes!
And that’s it for this week’s news blast, we hope that you’ve enjoyed it! If you have, please consider following us on our Social Media platforms for more Broken Lines content:
2020 is here, so we’d like to wish everyone out there a Happy New year. 2020 will be a big year for us as we’ll be releasing Broken Lines early this year, so we already have a lot to look forward to!
Game Tip - Movement
In Broken Lines, the soldiers are aware of their surroundings and so will automatically respond to nearby threats.
This means that when playing, you will only need to give interesting strategic commands such as where to move, and when/where to use a special ability (like throwing a grenade).
With the orders submitted, you hit play and watch as the squad carries out your orders, while reacting to threats.

Broken Lines talks with Venture Beat
"PortaPlay considers Broken Lines a “war noir” in some respects, focusing on the mental states of the soldiers [...] It’s an intriguing setup, and I’m eager to give it a look-see later this year" - Jason Wilson, Venture Beat

One feature that we’ve added to the game that you will need to watch out for is friendly fire.
If an enemy is in range, and your troops are positioned poorly, your own soldier may accidentally fire on a squadmate.

Be sure to keep this in mind when you create your strategies.

Checking out the Game!
One interesting feedback that we’ve received is that we’ve not really shared too many game-related videos. So, from this week and onwards, we’re going to be sharing videos and screenshots of the game in action, both general gameplay and mechanic based gameplay.
So to start things off we'd like to present you with a quick video of what the game looks like while you play it.

Did you know that many of the in-game models (such as the houses) are all inspired by real-world buildings?
Back in 2017, the PortaPlay team traveled to Transylvania in Romania where not only did we enjoy the stunning countryside, but we took careful note of what the buildings looked like.
When we got back, our designers created in-game models that were heavily based on what we saw. Check out the photo below - it is quite easy to see the similarity between the photo that we took and the in-game model.

Strike a Pose
As the development of the game gradually comes to an end, testing the game, finding bugs, and fixing the bugs has become one of our main tasks, and with this we find ourselves taking a lot of screenshots (after all we need to document our finds).
Recently, we managed to take a screenshot at the ‘perfect’ moment. Just before dying, this enemy soldier struck a perfect dab on the battlefield!

An important part of creating characters in a game is getting the initial sketches to look right, after all, they will form the basis of what the in-game model should look like.
With that in mind, we’d like to show you our progress developing Fry’s portrait. We developed him from a basic sketch, all the way to something more familiar while having a bit of fun in the middle!

Physics and Bug Hunting
If you’ve been following us for a while, you may have noticed that quite a few of the bugs that we’ve been sharing seem to be related to the game’s physics.
We wanted to figure out why some of the soldiers turn into ragdolls when they are killed (they would twitch all over the place and randomly fly into the distance). So our Lead Programmer placed a model inside some carefully positioned walls to try and trigger the bug.
As you can see, we were able to reproduce the bug, which makes fixing it so much easier!
The Return of the Dev Diary
The fifth Broken Lines dev diary has just been published!
In this edition, we focus on the primary weapons and their abilities. Each primary weapon has a normal auto-fire mode and a special ability that the player has to manually activate.

Broken Lines - Making our way to the Press
Our weekly news blast is back, bringing you all the latest from the world of Broken Lines!
Broken Lines Tip of the Week
Did you know that if you play Broken Lines in specific difficulty modes, permadeath is a feature that you will have to watch out for?
We have three different difficulty modes: easy, normal, and hard. If you play normal and hard mode, permadeath is enabled.
In normal mode, every unit can be revived once per game day, the first time that they go down they can be revived, however, the second time will result in a permanent death
if they die a second time, then you’ve lost that unit for good.
Can you guess what hard mode means? If you guessed that it means one death results in permadeath, then you’re right!
Do keep in mind that this is not the only way to lose units, if you’re not careful, the decisions made in-game can cause them to desert. We’ll have more on that next week!
Broken Lines in the Media
Development on Broken Lines has been going very smoothly and we’re on track to release the game in Q1 of 2020.
As we are getting closer to our release, we (PortaPlay and Super.com) are starting to work with several well-known gaming sites to get the hype train rolling
Are you interested in what is being written about us? Check out some of these highlights!

Beta Bug Hunting
This week’s featured bug was a very strange one.
One of the squad members decided to lie flat on the ground and try to sneak up on a group of enemies in that position.
Clearly startled by such an insane tactic, one of the soldiers decided that he had enough and slowly backed away!

Game Development Fun
This week we’ve got quite a bit of news from the world of Broken Lines game development, so sit tight!
From Sandbox to the Prototype
In the last month, we shared a few photos and slideshows from our very early days, showing you how we used an unconventional method to design Broken Lines - by playing in a special sandbox.
Well, did you know that we took the sandbox created map design, and created an actual in-game version of it for our early game prototype?
The machine gunner was just as deadly in-game as it was in our sandbox!

Beta Bug Fun
As you may have noticed, we do enjoy sharing the various bugs that we find in our closed beta, mainly because they’re usually very funny to look at. Naturally, we quickly find the source of the bug and fix it, so no need to worry about the final release!
This week’s bug was some strange behavior when it came to pathfinding. Instead of walking to one point, the squad members would continue to walk around in circles, as if they were looking for someone in the grass!
And that’s it for this week’s news blast, we hope that you’ve enjoyed it! If you have, please consider following us on our Social Media platforms for more Broken Lines content:
