BrVR: Backrooms Virtual Reality

V. 3.85

Not a whole lot this week, but there is some good stuff.

Added Level 235 Preview

This level is a sprawling yet quite dangerous trampoline park. There are several different areas including a lobby, a foam pit, a floor made of working trampolines, a "kids only area", birthday party rooms, and many other areas. You can even go under the trampolines. There are a good few entities there including facelings and skin-givers, so bring a weapon. Do note, the trampoline physics is a bit broken right now and will be worked on more. Remember, you can access previews by going to the hub, then over past the alternate realities section to a little door named "Legacy Museum". From there go to the Aim map and that's where you'll find the previews. Suggested by @Ali666 on our discord.

Added a random no-clip option

There is now a new option on the board near the no-clip that's inside of the frontrooms basement. The new option allows you to no-clip to a random level. Suggested by @hypertxt on our discord.

Here are some rapid-fire changes:

Added a poster in the tutorial about attachments
Optimized the Level -4 preview some more
Improved collision on Level 37 bamboo
Added the G18 to the gun store
Lit up the level 75 exit
Improved level 26 a good deal
Removed some potential softlocks from level 28

V. 3.81 MAIN BRANCH UPDATE

This update is back on the main branch! If you are on the beta branch, you will also be updated to this version automatically.

Added G18

This new 17-round 9mm pistol has a full-auto mode that can be activated by pressing trigger on the offhand. In that respect, it's pretty unique. It's also the first polymer pistol to be added. Do note that it isn't available in normal gameplay yet and is only available in the arena mode/killshack. I'll be putting it in the gun store soon though.

Improved many aspects of the killshack

The killshack has gotten improved lighting, better ambience, better signage, and an improved sniper area. The menu to spawn items is also much more readable.

Now for some rapid-fire changes:

Fixed some minor Z-Fighting issues
Switched the Shadow Tactics store from selling the 1911 to selling the Makarov
Updated the level negative 4 preview
Turned down the menu open noise
Fixed an issue with crafting table UI
Fixed an issue with a door job in level 1
Added a limiter to the amount of entities in the Arena

Now, if you were on the main branch you'll get a ton of other stuff from past beta updates. Unlike the last ones, I will not list those changes here for the sake of keeping the post short. However, if you'd like to know, scroll down to get the patch notes for the last beta updates.

Minor, Inconspicuous Update

We've added a practical training section to the tutorial. We hope folks will love it. Feel free to try it out on the Beta Branch.

V. 3.83

This is a fun update: We have a revamp, a new level, and a level preview all in one. Here they are:

Revamped level 39

Level 39 has gotten a complete facelift. It's now much smaller, however that means that it looks much better and is significantly more optimized. There are now wild hounds and two exits instead of just one. New ambience is present as well.

Added Level 130

Level 130 is a new procedurally-generated level which takes the form of an infinite labyrinth of pools. There are several different types of hallways that can generate, and even some rooms with random loot. There aren't any entities (the wiki called for dullers but they're difficult to do on procedural levels) so you can explore freely to your heart's content.

Added Level Negative 4 Preview

A new preview for Level Negative 4 has been added. It is significantly more built out than the previous version, but as of now it's very laggy and the lighting isn't very good. Those issues will be ironed out soon. Remember, you can access level previews by going to the hub, to the legacy museum, then to the test map and looking behind you.

Here are some rapid-fire changes:

Worked more on the bolt interation for the mk3 rifle
Made a couple of new airhorn reactions
Improved M1 Garand and M1A hand-holds
Added some particles to the PoolroomsSand exit

V. 3.82

Formally added level 75

Level 75 has been improved, taken out of the test map, and put into the hub. You can now mine firesalt in there, and the collision is improved. Also, the liquid metal is a bit more forgiving with the tide patterns. It can now be entered through level 8

Added back the level 41 entrance

Whoops... level 41's level 11 entrance was somehow eliminated, but it's back now.

Added an MEG Fine

If you did something wrong, you can now go out in front of MEG Base Alpha to pay your fine. This resets your reputation with the MEG.

Added Level Fridge

Level Fridge is a fun new joke level that can be accessed through level 4. The first part of the level is in a giant refrigerator filled with ketchup creatures and strange alien-looking plants made of groceries. Once you fall off the edge of the refrigerator though, you will be sent to the main part of Level Fridge. This section is a refrigerator store with the "I Love Refrigerators" man running around and turning you into a refrigerator. Do note, there are a couple of known issues with the level including the ambience cutting out and the "Fridge Guy"s shirt not rendering.

Now for a couple of rapid-fire changes:

Added the constrainer to the sandbox
Improved the level 188 preview
Made it so that you need to use two hands to open up tubs of food
Improved the mk3 bolt interaction
Added a few new hallucinations/strange events

V. 3.81, "Rampage Update"

Added the Rampage Vinyl

A new 12-track compilation album is out featuring tracks from LunaNightZ, Bucket Of Chicken, and myself. Dubbed "Rampage Compilation" in-game, it has a large focus on heavier rock, industrial, and metal. You can buy it at the LunaNightZ record store and get a cassette as well for portability.

Added several new Arena Mode features

If you're in Arena Mode, you can play the aforementioned rampage record without spending any backrooms bucks. However, that's far from the only change. There's now a power-up that drops from enemies infrequently. It doubles your damage, but decreases your health slightly for around 30 seconds. It even gets its own theme when active! Secondly, there are new, bigger versions of enemies that can spawn rarely. They're much more difficult to take down, as they have 3-4x the amount of health of the normal ones.

Added Firesalt Pistol

This 5-shot fire-shooting pistol is currently only available in arena mode but will be made available to the rest of the backrooms sometime soon. Suggested by @FrankC on our discord

Added MEG Faction Status

Guards now adorn the MEG bases alpha and omega, and if you do something bad (shooting inside the base) the MEG won't like you very much. Good luck trying to walk into a MEG base after that, you'll get instantly recognized. In addition, new MEG soldiers will attempt to hunt you down if you're still inside the base when the alarm is going off. To equalize this, I made detection of threats to the MEG much more lenient. A system to buy another identity will be added, allowing you to re-enter the MEG bases if you'd like to stay on the straight and narrow.

Added level 75 preview

Level 75 is a new cave level that has rising and falling liquid metal in the pits. This metal is extremely difficult to swim through and will suffocate you if your head goes under, so watch out! Only run when the "tide" is down, and keep a close eye on which direction it's headed. The reason this is a preview is that there's still relatively little to do in the level, and the collision for some of the rocks is beyond horrendous. You can try to find the exit though, if you see orange rocks, you know you're on the right track.

Improved level 188 preview

Many new walls and text actors have been replaced. Lights have been added to the bottom-most halls, and many cracks into the void have been sealed (with a quantum trowel of seal flex). The ambience has also been worked on. It's a slow process but this version

V. 3.80 MAIN BRANCH UPDATE

This update is back on the main branch! If you are on the beta branch, you will also be updated to this version automatically.

"Frutigerized" most all of the UI

The UI for the menu, vault, crafting bench, upgrade bench, crafting material selling bench, and arena mode spawn panel have all been revamped with new colors, fonts, and icons. We took a poll as to the style, and the winning style was Frutiger Aero. There are also new UI sounds to accompany the visual overhaul.

Added level 188 preview

Starting in April of last year, we have been working on a revamp for level 188. There have been a number of difficulties in getting it in, but now a preview is in. Somehow all of the text and walls got lost in translation somewhere and I'm having to put them all back, one by one. The preview is extremely broken and laggy, but if you'd really like to try it out, you can go to the legacy museum in the hub, go to the "aim" map, and then enter the door behind spawn.

Added a broken door mechanic

You can now fix No-clip-a-matic doors for the MEG. Go to MEG base alpha to apply. There's a television behind the main room that allows you to see which doors need fixing, although after you've applied you can see those at any time inside the notebook. To fix a door, walk up to it (you'll know it's the correct one if it says "BRKN" in place of a level name), approach the right side, turn off the electricity so you don't electrocute yourself, press the correct calibration buttons until the green bar is at 100%, then turn back on electricity. You'll get 650$ for each door fixed.

A couple of rapid-fire changes:

Added new tutorials to the UI of the crafting bench and upgrade bench
Added more trims to level 5 and the casino

Now, if you were on the main branch you'll get a ton of other stuff from past beta updates. Unlike the last ones, I will not list those changes here for the sake of keeping the post short. However, if you'd like to know, scroll down to get the patch notes for the last beta updates.

V. 3.79

Added the all object launcher (and variants)

A fun little thing that had my attention for longer than it should've. Essentially, it's an upgrade to the balloonderbuss that allows you to launch any object. There are 4 variants: Standard, sniper, high-capacity, and expanded. Standard and sniper both have a capacity of 1, but high-capacity and expanded have capacities of 5 and 15 respectively. The sniper variant has sights affixed to the launcher and the expanded variant has a pistol grip, making them easier to use. To use the launchers, pick up an object (anything, try magazines first) and shove them in the front. Then press A/X to prime the hammer and press trigger to launch it. You can hold down A/X to forcibly discharge everything inside of the launcher, which isn't very useful but sure is fun.

Added the welding tool

A very fun but potentially janky tool for sandbox gameplay. It's only available via the test map for now but will be added to the sandbox map soon. It's what it sounds like, a tool that attaches two objects together.

Made some changes to the backpack

The backpack now freezes in place instead of getting sucked back onto your back once let go. There are also some smaller collision changes but there will be more changes in the future!

Worked on grenade physics

Grenades now have less of a tendency to freeze, but are still being worked on.

Fixed a bug with level 19...whoops

Level 19 was broken on the beta branch until today...whoops

Added the time slow on entity damage option

This option slows time when an entity is damaged, and is a great option for backrooms filmmakers. It resumes normal time after a couple of seconds.

Improved the lottery tickets

The lottery tickets now have three fields that act similar to a slot machine, plus a new "bonus cash" scratch at the bottom which worked similar to the original lottery.

A couple of rapid-fire features:

Added many new rooms to level 4
Casino chris now can't win at his own slot machine
Added new options to the analog horror filter

V. 3.78

Revamped The End

The End has received a decent graphical upgrade. Most of the old, low-poly bookshelves have been replaced with better-looking ones, and there's also new props and lights. The level now appears a good deal more dirty than before as well.

Added the analog horror filter

An extremely dark new filter that makes BrVR look terrifying. It'll probably be decent for filmmaking but isn't really meant for gameplay. If you can beat the game with it on though, props to you.

Added the boat to level -2

The boat has made an appearance in level -2 where you can now navigate the flooded pool area with it. It's pretty difficult to do so though, you'll need to do a lot of pushing against walls and have a good knowledge of operating the boat.

V. 3.77

New this week: Infinite level 0, more. This is a BETA update. Please use the Beta branch in BrVR's steam library page -> gear icon -> properties -> betas.

Revamped Procedural Level 0

Procedural Level 0 has been completely revamped with overhauled graphics, many new rooms (and variants), new entity spawns, and a new biome (pitfalls). All walls in the main biome now have trims, making it look much more complete. It now runs at a consistent FPS as well.

There are a few known issues with the generation: Carpet disconnected from pitfall walls, flashlights inoperative near red light areas, and an issue with trims in the 0.2 biome. These have already been fixed, but I didn't have enough time to re-build the packaged game so that I could give y'all the fixed version. They're minor issues so they shouldn't effect gameplay too much.

Now for some rapid-fire changes:

Made it so that sanity doesn't have any effect in level 11
Added the less red filter
Added an upgrade recipe for the M82
Added slots for weapons to the bottom two slots of the gun rack
Added shopping cart collision sounds
Resized some of the skin-stealers in the factory
Moved the level 11 start back to the normal location
Fixed an issue with chips in your ammo pouch triggering casino equipment
Revamped the first part of level REDACTED
Fixed several long-standing issues with the pitfalls
Added Ralph's mix record
Made it so that two record players can play at once
Forcefully removed the birds from level 974
