Family Trials is a combat-oriented experience that is independent of the story-focused campaign. This major update is all about chopping your way through the game’s perilous dungeons all while completing objectives and constructing the ultimate character builds to purge all the monsters, sub-bosses, and bosses that stand in your way. Three difficulty levels offer a mounting challenge and affect the number of randomly generated levels in each run - yet the family's efforts will be handsomely rewarded with upgradable Divine Relics and Graces, frequent item drops, and a brand-new Talent System.

Family Fireside Fables is a pack of six charming tales, ranging from adventurous to mysterious, read by the game’s unmistakable narrator, Ed Kelly. Children of Morta | Community Update - March 2021



Hi there, Family!

We hope that the year 2021 has treated you well so far. We are doing great but we’re also quite busy. What are we cooking, you ask? Well, some content for Children of Morta, obviously! Lands of Rea are rather dangerous in some places - that’s why from time to time it is wise to create a detour in your travels. And it’s especially nice if you find some unexpected rewards while discovering new routes, right? So that’s exactly what we did. Here’s a quick summary of our adventures from 2020 and some plans for 2021.

« THE STORY SO FAR »
2020 was a tough year for all of us. A global pandemic, social unrest, major natural disasters. Everyone copes with tough situations differently - and we happen to be a bunch of proper gaming nerds aficionados, so that’s what we have focused on: making stuff for our game for you to enjoy. We hope that by creating new content for Children of Morta we’ve provided you with a portion of much-needed escapism. In 2020, we have delivered 5 significant updates to the game and four of them were completely free. Through those updates, we’ve added things like Items Packs, New Game+ Mode, new difficulty settings, a brand new playable character, and more!

The paid DLC, however, was a different story and was very special for us - ‘cause it gave a spotlight to something that we care about deeply: our animal friends. Paws and Claws DLC - while it obviously adds new features to the game (like the Animal Shelter System, new boosts, animations and events) - it first and foremost focuses on helping animals in the real world. 100% of 11 bit studios and Dead Mage's proceeds from selling this piece of content go to the Humane Society International charity organization. We’re super proud to announce that this way we’ve already raised more than $100k (and this number is still growing!) for animals around the world - and it’s all thanks to you! Thank you so much for supporting Paws and Claws DLC, folks!

« NEW ROUTES ON THE ROADMAP »
As you can see, there are some alterations to our route and we’d like to shed some light on what happened here and what we had to change over the course of the last few months.

Our initial plan for the last three updates was simple: 1) deliver a rather straightforward and basic endless mode for the game; 2) then add the online co-op functionality and last but not least - 3) create a bigger piece of paid content that would feel like a separate mode of the game. Those were the three upcoming points on our previous roadmap. However, what we have learned by creating the Uncharted Lands (paid DLC) - is that it would organically work better if we have actually merged some of its features with the Endless Mode, delivering a brand new experience in a shorter amount of time. A win-win situation, so to speak.

Let us be fully transparent here: we kinda felt that the basic endless mode (The Temple of The Endless Update on the roadmap) that we’ve implemented and tested back in the day didn’t add that much to the game. It was functional, you would’ve enjoyed it for sure - but it wasn’t a major game-changer. We felt it’s not enough - even as a fun little free update. But by borrowing some mechanics from the paid DLC content - we could’ve created something special that almost feels like a game within a game. So... that’s exactly what we did. That’s how the Family Trials Mode was born!

And there’s a surprise here, too. Even though it was supposed to be a paid DLC, we decided to make it totally free to thank you all for supporting us by buying the game and the Paws and Claws Charity DLC.

» Long story short: there is no paid DLC coming anymore at a later stage - instead of that you’re getting a bigger, super fun, free content update in the form of Family Trials Mode.

We’re going to share more information about the new content later down the road. But we don’t want to leave you empty-handed so for now, here’s a sneak peek of the totally new hub area that will welcome you to the Family Trials Mode:

« ONLINE CO-OP »
We know you’re all waiting for the online co-op functionality to be added to Children of Morta. Believe us, we want to see you wreaking havoc on your enemies without the restraints of the local co-op, too - but the only thing we can confirm at the moment is that we’re still working on it, it’s not canceled or anything like that. We can’t give you any dates here. The only new piece of info is that the upcoming Family Trials Mode will also use that online co-op support in the future.

Paws and Claws DLC has already raised $50,000 for charity!

We have a piece of truly wonderful and heartwarming news for you today! The Paws and Claws charity DLC has proven to be a huge success, but we're not done yet as we plan to launch a special streaming event to celebrate the game’s first anniversary and raise even more funds!

Long story short: on August 24th, we have launched the ‘Paws and Claws’ charity DLC for Children of Morta. 100% of our proceeds from the sale of the DLC go to Humane Society International (HSI). Today, on the first anniversary of the game’s launch, we are immensely proud to announce that in only one week this initiative has raised more than $50,000 to help animals around the globe! From the bottom of our hearts, we thank every player for their continuous support and their contribution to this noble cause.

One Year Anniversary - Children of Morta's Story So Far:
Children of Morta launched September 3rd, 2019 on PC with consoles following in the two months after. The inspiring story of a valiant family guarding the legendary Mount Morta against the Corruption captivated players and critics alike. Continuing with post-launch support, Children of Morta has seen regular content drops with things like item packs and significant free updates leading the way -- Hard Mode (Shrine of Challenge update), New Game+ (Setting Sun Inn update), and an entirely new playable character (Bergsons’ House update). Paws and Claws is truly the cherry on top of the game’s first year on the market, but the devs haven’t yet said the final word and there’s still more to come!

Linux Support:
We have some great news for our Linux community, too! It took us some time - but we've finally managed to add Linux to the list of supported systems! If you're using Ubuntu 16.04+ the game should run just fine but we highly recommend Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS (or any newer version than that).



Below you'll find a detailed list of Paws and Claws' new features, changes and additions. We've decided to list them separately bacause some of those details may be worth discovering on your own and you might consider us talking about them as "spoilers". :)

New key features added in the DLC:

  • Animal Shelter System - a new section of the house.
  • Taking care of animals.
  • Animals have happiness levels. You can raise them by giving them treats.
  • High happiness = boost for the family.
  • Animal modes: Normal (no boost), Happy (low boost), Excited (med boost), Overjoyed (High boost).
  • Treats are dropping from dungeon chests.
  • There are two types of treats: Common and Epic.
  • Animal Shelter will be unlocked after the player reaches floor 2 of cave 2.
  • Active Boosts will be shown in notifications, home status and character select menu.
  • Animal idle animations will change with house Corruption levels.
  • Animals will not always appear in the house, sometimes they’re in the jungles of Rea and out of Bergsons’ sight.

Added 5 kinds of Boosts for Bergsons:

  • Critical Chance (low, mid, high)
  • Movement Speed (low, mid, high)
  • XP Gain (low, mid, high)
  • Luck (low, mid, high)
  • Dodge Chance (low, mid, high)

    • Damaging Pool and Wave buffs
    • Apan Ability runes will consume overtime of ability use instead of start of the ability

Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed the issue where Lucy could dash out of bounds (especially in Forest area)
  • Fixed the issue where Rage globes had Health globe icon on the minimap
  • Fixed the issue where Player could activate Healing Obelisk effect infinitely after activating the Obelisk and then discovering the Teleportation Room
  • Fixed the issue where Player character could get stuck behind chests
  • Fixed the issue with an infinite loading if both boss and character were killed at the same time in the Forest level
  • Fixed the issue where PS4 Dualshock 4 Controller was not properly supported on Windows both wired and via bluetooth
  • Fixed the issue where poison and fire related runes damage did not scale up throughout the game
  • Fixed the issue where Player could use teleportation shortcut to trigger Obelisk of Force effect continuously
  • Fixed the issue where and input from Right Stick was interrupted when moving and using secondary attack for some characters
  • Several additional small bug fixes and improvements


So, just as a quick summary: you need to buy the Paws and Claws DLC to get all the new animal-related content - and this way, you are supporting Humane Society International. But you'll still get the new items from A Treasure! Update, even if you won't buy the PnC DLC. However, we highly recommend getting the DLC - it makes this world a better place for all of us. Bergsons' House - New Character Added! | Free Content Update

Bergsons’ House Update introduces a brand-new hero: Apan, a versatile mid-range champion, capable of covering a large area with her staff and spells while using a set of all-new runes and skills. Apan’s Introduction - Story:


Among the Asva tribe, she is known as “Clan Mother”. She was barely out of childhood when her talent for healing started to show. As a youth, she would participate in her tribe’s battles to treat and nurse the soldiers but wasn’t above picking up a weapon and fight when it was called for.

In one of those wars, she nursed to health a young warrior named Dhal, the son of their tribe chief, from critical wounds. They started courting and got married on the midsummer day, under the lucky shade of willows. As a gift, on their marriage day, Dhal gave Apan a magical dragon-shaped flying kite, upon which she could ride over the entire lands of the north in a day and a night.

Years later, when she spied the amassed pitch-black clouds in the distant south, she decided that she was needed in the midlands, and she arrived there to give aid to the Bergsons in their fight against the Corruption.




Apan’s Introduction - Gameplay:


Apan is as skilled in providing vital support for the companions on the battlefield as in wielding a sturdy staff. Weapons’ reach makes Apan perfect for delivering deadly mid-range strikes and her special Asva Pulse dash ability leaves the opponents hindered in the dust. Her spells cover a large area of effect, and all the Bergsons can take advantage from Apan’s medical knowledge as she boosts the effects of the healing potions. Also, a new system lets the family gain shields from items, abilities, and Apan’s Rage skill. In other words - her presence makes them all stronger, especially in the battle.



Apan’s Introduction - Origins:


We're also super happy to say that the new character design was done by a backer and his partner from the game’s Kickstarter campaign! They believed in our project since the very early stage and we are super thankful for that! Here's what these backers - known as AgaRar and GlueBubble - had to say about the idea that inspired the Apan's creation: “The idea for Apan came from the brainstorming of myself and my partner. We originally made her an orphan but later changed her to a mother to better compliment the Children of Morta story and family theme. A strong leader of nomadic healers who allies herself with the Bergsons to aid them in their fight against Corruption. We hope that our inspiration and Dead Mage's hard work translates into a character that you all will enjoy for years to come.”.

Main Apan skills:
    Asva Thunderclap
    Apan focuses the energy around her and releases it at enemies to push back, slow, and damage them.

    Magic Glyph
    Using her staff, Apan channels energy around her, creating an area that damages and slows enemies in it.

    Guardian’s Rage

    Apan unleashes her rage at a protective manner, granting shield to herself and the Bergsons around her.




Added 32 Apan-specific Runes and 6 new Runes for other Bergsons to aid them in combat:

  • Apan Trait for Linda: the primary critical attack has a chance to gain a shield
  • Apan Trait for Kevin: Kevin gains shield when he exits shadow dance
  • Apan Trait for John: the primary attack has a chance to gain a shield
  • Apan Trait for Lucy: when lucy uses her decoy, she gains a shield
  • Apan Trait for Mark: marks gains shield when he uses his stick
  • Apan Trait for Joey: joey's smite gives him a shield

Added new Shield System:

  • Bergsons can gain shield now, from items, abilities and Apan’s Guardian Rage skill
  • The shield will add on top of HP bar in HUD with an indicator of the amount of shield
  • Shields are temporary and can stack up
  • When characters have shield all of the receiving damages will be blocked by it till the shield amount ends or shield duration finished.
  • Lucy Guardian Rage skill will now add her Shield instead of increasing her maximum health

Added new Rage Globes drop:
Added new Rage Globes drop - refill your rage meter faster! Rage Globes drop with the similar rules as Health Globes. Note: Rage Globes will be added to Nintendo Switch version of the game in a few days, so don’t be alarmed if you don’t see it there, yet!

HUD Tooltip Rework:

  • Buff panel now supports and shows more character buffs, including the passive skill of characters skill tree
  • Buffs now auto-scroll when players have more than 9 buffs in normal HUD size and 7 buffs in Larger HUD
  • Divine Grace tooltip also will auto-scroll when players have more than 8 relics
  • Runes are now visible on the minimap

UI changes:

  • Added HP indicator for Decoys and Totem Divine Relics
  • Added Time indicator for Decoys and Totem Divine Relics

Bug fixes:

  • Fixed several issues with Gambler prompts
  • Fixed missing narration for Goblin King event in Magma dungeon
  • Fixed several issues with texts overlap on the UI
  • Fixed rocket targeting in Magma Dungeon
  • Fixed the issue where the first dungeon of a Chapter was always highlighted upon opening the Dungeon selection screen
  • Increased spawn rate for Stones required for Wine Machine event
  • Several additional small bugfixes

How to unlock the new character (minor spoilers):

  1. Apan will be unlocked after watching her intro cutscene.
  2. Apan intro cutscene conditions are met when players reach the second floor of Ziggurat dungeon in Barahut chapter.
  3. If in the loaded save slot players have cleared the Ziggurat dungeon already, Apan intro cutscene will be played by going to any dungeon and returning home.
  4. Apan intro cutscene has less "weight" against main story cutscenes. If there are other cutscenes in the queue, Apan intro cutscene will not play till all of the important cutscenes are watched in the house.

Setting Sun Inn | NG+ Hotfix Update



Hi there, Fam!

You've probably noticed that Steam is downloading some kind of update for Children of Morta. Don't be alarmed! It's just a simple Hotfix for the Setting Sun Inn Update! ːwinter2019surprisedyulː

Here's the list of changes:
  • Fixed the issue in NG+ where dungeon selector disappears after certain steps;
  • Fixed the issue where NG+ could not be started if the base game was completed before Hard Mode update was introduced to the game;

This Update is already available on Steam and GOG. We're releasing it soon (tomorrow, probably) on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Store. We have to ask our Nintendo Switch users for more patience, though - due to additional certification the updating proces may take up to few weeks.

Setting Sun Inn - NEW GAME+ Added | Free Content Update



Greetings, Fam!


It's great to see you all, gathered around the hearth of our humble Setting Sun Inn. Word has it that the brave Bergson family continues their journey along the Children of Morta development roadmap with the addition of the New Game+ Update. This free update includes - you've guessed it - New Game+ content with tons of additional lore in stunning new cutscenes and quests. We are super excited to deliver the second free content update from our Development Roadmap. As you could expect, the New Game+ Mode encourages you to follow the Bergson’s journey again, this time with an increase in difficulty, character skill point caps, and upgrades in both Ben’s workshop and Margaret’s lab.

We have also enriched the lore of the game with more than 50 new cutscenes, home events, and activities. We believe these additional pieces of story will strengthen your bond to the Bergson family and the wondrous world of Rea. In addition to the New Game+ content, new family-related quests have been added to the dungeons and will appear during the first playthrough as well. The update is available on all platforms: PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch.



General list of changes that we've introduced in the Setting Sun Inn Update:
  • New Game Plus mode where players keep previously unlocked characters, skill tree progress, resources, Ben’s workshop and Book of Rea upgrades, all while playing through even more challenging content
  • 20 new cutscenes
  • 8 new Home Interactive Events to liven up the Bergson family home
  • 26 new Home Idle Activities to keep the Bergsons occupied
  • 14 new Family Events and Quests in the Dungeons
  • 3 new Side Quest Traits
  • Balance changes and bug fixes

However - it may include some very minor spoilers, and we know that some of you are very sensitive about that - that's why we decided not to share it in the list of the main features.

Detailed list of Setting Sun Inn Update changes:


Added New Game Plus mode:
  • After completing the game, players can convert their completed save slot to NG+ slot in save slot menu
  • New Game Plus slots will have “+” icon and slightly different highlight effect

In the NG+ mode, players can play Children of Morta's story from scratch.
    By doing so, they will lose:
  • Unlocked areas and dungeons.
  • All quests progress.

    They will keep:
  • Unlocked characters.
  • Character skill tree progress.
  • All resources
  • Ben's workshop upgrades.
  • Book of Rea upgrades.

    The following changes also apply:
  • Noticeable increase in the game’s difficulty.
  • Character skill points cap increased.
  • Level cap of upgrades of Ben's workshop increased.
  • Level cap of upgrades of Book of Rea increased.

New Save Slot Menu - Save Slot menu now have slot setting button and a sub-menu for each slot with new features:
  • Convert to New Game Plus for completed saves
  • Copy/Paste save slot
  • Delete save slot

Balance Changes:
  • Lucy Rage ability range and damage buffed
  • Joey Secondary attack damage buffed
  • Players interaction with shrines and golden chests now can transition to evading to make it more responsive
  • Tree of Rea Luck upgrade nerfed
  • Tree of Rea Divine Mastery upgrade nerfed
  • Divine Performer gold bonus 2x -> 2.5x
  • Swift Shanks MoveSpeed also apply to Sheathed
  • GemStone Hungry max stack reduced from 20 to 15
  • Pulsating Orb cooldown decreased from 30 to 20
  • Totem of Defiance Pushback speed increased
  • Spiral of Doom Damage Reduce 1.5 -> 1 cooldown increased
  • Divine Shield damage reduced 1 -> 0.6 cooldown increased
  • Stone Hide duration 10 -> 8

Other changes:
  • Added the ability to reset the Corruption effect of a character with Mysterious Egg.
  • Lots of smaller bug fixes and other balance tweaks to make the game smoother.
  • Perfectionist Achievement has been fixed on PlayStation 4!

It is time to give you the first piece from a series of upcoming free content updates!

The Bergson family fought the Corruption without a glimpse of respite but their journey is far from over. Shrine of Challenge marks the first stop at a new, exciting branch in the story. The addition of Hard Mode will provide a greater challenge, and experience rewards, even to players already toughened by hundreds of battles. Along with new fight rules and enemies, all-new items come to help the fearless heroes purge their homeland of evil.

Shrine of Challenge update contains:
  • Hard Mode with increased enemies damage and health, and bigger XP rewards
  • New Enemies: Dark Blade and Mech Constructor
  • New UI with larger HUD option
  • 18 new Items granting boulders falling from the sky, bolts emanating from the players among many others
  • Balance tweaks for Normal Mode and other fixes (find full list in the Patch Notes on Steam Discussions)
