New Team Objective Map - The Assault on Thayic Stronghold

Mason forces land on the shores of the Agathian heartland and assault Argon II's final stronghold. The new Stronghold map is playable in the limited time: Winter War queue.

The Masons have cornered the Agathians in their northern stronghold. In the wretched cold, the Mason Order action on the one command from the grizzled King himself: kill the self-proclaimed leader of Agatha and be rid of the rebellion once and for all. The Agathian Knights, however, have never been more unified than before. Under the banners of the Cross and Lion, the blue and gold shine as bright as King Argon the Second’s armour. Like the harsh wind of the land, Argon shouts, “Fight for Agatha!”

In this map, Masons are tasked to siege Thayic Stronghold and kill Argon. However, this will not be easy. The shoreline is heavily defended with artillery and the Masons must break through the walls, lowering the main fort’s drawbridge, and capture the courtyard right in front of Argon’s doorstep.

As the Mason Order, attackers must complete the following objectives:

Objective 1- Blow up the shoreline defense towers
Objective 2 - Destroy the stronghold’s bell tower
Objective 3 - Destroy the stronghold’s banners
Objective 4 - Lower the drawbridge
Objective 5 - Capture the courtyard
Objective 6 - Kill Argon II

As the Agathian Knights, defenders must stop the Masons from completing each of these objectives. However, should they reach the sixth objective, the top scoring player will become the VIP and lead the charge to turn the tide of battle.

Some objectives will feature horse spawns and horses can be found within the map itself. Players can play the map in both the Mounted Warfare queue, the limited timed Winter War queue and the 64 Player Mixed Modes queue.

New FFA/TDM map - Hippodrome

After the fall of the bulwark in Baudwyn, many Masons who were unable to retreat were captured and held prisoner in Askandir. With the sound of cheering Tenosian spectators wishing for a good show and their deaths, the Masons must prove that they will not be taken down for sport. Fight on horseback and prove your faction’s might!

Hippodrome is a fast, frantic, bloody combat arena with spike traps, flamethrowers and horses thrown into the mix. You'll feel like a gladiator fighting for your life in this Tenosian equivalent of Tournament Grounds. Listen to the stampede of hooves as you run down the field with lance couched, ready to slam into any enemy in your sights.

New Weapon - Katars

Katars, with four customization variations (Katars, Maustika, Imperial Fang, and Tigress Claws)

The first dual-wielded weapon joins the world of Chivalry 2! The Katars are a matched pair of deadly daggers for swift close range attacks. Designed for the Ambusher class, it is a very fast stab weapon that does not interrupt opponents. It also encourages the player wielding it to have good footwork and to make use of dodges, as it has a very weak block compared to other weapons. The katars make for an excellent engaging weapon, allowing Ambushers to get behind enemy lines and cut down heavily armored fighters with ease.

This weapon requires high precision to use and much practice. Aim well during your ambushes!

  • Katars operate under the same counter rules seen in spears (ie. a stab input will counter a Katar's slash and stab attack)
  • The special is quick and has the chance of hitting an opponent twice
  • When inputting Jab, players wielding Katars will headbutt instead of a standard weapon jab
  • Slash, stab, and overhead attacks of the Katars will not cause the opponent to flinch when you successfully land a hit

New Turban Helmet Set, with additional Chain and Gladiator variants

New Furusiyya Armor for Tenosia Vanguard

New Chivalry 2 Music & 2.6 Matchmaking Changes

New Official Music

The Chivalry 2 (Original Game Soundtrack) Vol. 2 by our composer J.D. Spears is now available!

Enjoy all of the music that's been added to the game since our initial release, including new brawl tunes and of course our expansive collection of new Tenosia tracks. You can listen to the Tenosia tracks at the YouTube video below, and check out this link to stream the album.

2.6 Matchmaking Changes

A new update means new matchmaking changes, and in 2.6 we have some new things coming to our Play menu. The following changes will be implemented in our October update (the Reinforced Update).

One of these things we talked about in our last stream is the addition of horses being added to Team Objective maps Aberfell and Rudhelm in 40 player mode. In conjunction with Aberfell and Rudhelm, we'll see our new map Team Deathmatch Hippodrome combined with our current Tenosian Invasion queue into a brand new queue called the Mounted Warfare queue, where you'll be able to play the horse maps in one place.

The Horse version of Rudhelm will be added to Beginner Mode.

Our Tenosian maps without horses will be officially joining the 64p mixed modes queue as well, which includes: The Breach of Baudwin, The Razing of Askandir, and TDM Desert. We know players have been anticipating this since the Tenosian maps were released, and we're happy to finally have these maps available in our 64p queue.

Weapon Customization Poll

After our Twitch stream we put up a poll on our social media to choose which weapon would get an upcoming weapon customization set. Across the board our community chose the War Axe as your winner! As the winner of poll, the War Axe will be getting a new weapon cosmetic set early next year. Thank you for your votes!

Discord Forums

If you haven't been in our Discord lately we've done some reformatting of multiple channels inside our community Discord. Discord recently introduced a new forums feature, and we've adapted this featured for our bugs and feedback sections. This new format seems to be going over well with the community so far and has allowed us to quickly review the bugs and feedback that our community is sharing with us in a much more streamlined manner.

If you're not in our official Discord already, be sure to join us over at discord.gg/Chivalry2

Community Guest - BrwnSuperman

In our latest stream we featured one of our community members and member of our Partner Program, BrwnSuperman.

Superman is a long-standing very active member of the community who's over level 1000 in-game! He streams his Chivalry 2 gameplay on Twitch and also posts highlights and clips on his YouTube channel, including a series he called "Chivalry 2 Moments" which is definitely worth a watch.

In our stream with Superman, he chatted to us about what has drawn him to the game and what keeps him playing. "I have so much fun in this game and it's sorta like gaming with friends in person again, before mostly all multiplayer became online. Streaming to Discord to friends wasn't cutting it so I looked into Twitch streaming. It's a fun hobby."

As such a high-level, Superman recommends people change up their playstyles and play Team Objective to become an expert on the battlefield. He also emphasizes situational awareness.

"You're playing against other humans. If you're going to keep trying the same thing over and over and it's not working, you're going to frustrate yourself. You might get that dopamine hit when that low effort gaming works out once but in the long run you're going to become predictable and get shut down. And while you're learning, this is one of the few games where deaths are as nearly satisfying as getting kills."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHbdEl203Gc&feature=emb_title
Superman also shared with us the Community League that he and a group of others within our competitive community are working on. The League will be a Team Objective, team-based competitive league. If that's something that sounds interesting to you, check out the trailer above for more information and how to participate.

Reinforced Timeline Update & Future Content Reveals

Knights,

Today we’re excited to bring you an update on the development of Chivalry 2. The release date for our next major update, the Reinforced Update, is set for the beginning of October 2022.

While delayed from its original Summer release timeline, update 2.6 will still include new content, including a new map called Hippodrome, a new weapon known as the Katar, new customization, and a whole host of great features and fixes.

Hippodrome is set to be the equivalent of Tournament Grounds but taking place in the Tenosian Empire. It is a fast, frantic, bloody combat arena with spike traps, flamethrowers and horses thrown into the mix. You'll feel like a gladiator fighting for your life in this Tenosian equivalent of Tournament Grounds. And it has horses for extra chaos! Listen to the stampede of hooves as you run down the field with lance couched, ready to slam into any enemy in your sights.

2.6 will also include the new Katars weapon. The first dual-wielded weapon to join the world of Chivalry 2, the katar is a matched pair of deadly, armour-piercing, daggers for swift close range attacks. Designed for the Ambusher class, it is a very fast stab weapon that does not interrupt opponents. It also encourages the player wielding it to have good footwork and make use of dodges, as it has a very weak block. The katar makes for an excellent engaging weapon, allowing Ambushers to get behind enemy lines and cut down heavily armoured fighters with ease.

We have new player customization coming with this update, specifically some new looks for those enjoying playing as Tenosia since the Tenosian Invasion update.

In addition to the above upcoming content, we want to share with you some fixes that are coming in the future (may not all be included in update 2.6 specifically) that we know are important to the community as well.

Team Balance Changes:
Team balance restrictions will now begin at the start of a match in Matchmaking* games, preventing players from stacking onto one team while unrestricted. The ability to switch teams is restricted to only if the opposite team has 2 less players on it.
*At this time we have decided to omit this team balancing change from Server Browser servers to allow competitive players to arrange games with their chosen teams on these servers.

Ghost hits with projectiles is improved:
This change has to do with throwing projectiles that seemingly do not impact damage. This also includes things like a projectile hitting someone’s shield that they have on their back doesn't produce audio feedback.

General Fixes:

  • No Helmet option
  • Falmire spawning under map issue
  • Peasants will spawn again on Courtyard
  • Fixes to spawning with the wrong shield factions on some consoles
  • Adding Mason & Agatha heraldries to FFA
  • Spear/1H Spear balance adjustments
  • Highland sword balance adjustments
  • Additional measures to combat hackers

Chivalry 2's Halloween event will also be returning. There will be spooky decorations on some of your favourite maps such as Darkforest and Rudhelm Siege, and the newly added Desert and Wardenglade (TDM Horses). Wearable pumpkin helmets will be making a triumphant return alongside new seasonal cosmetics purchasable with crowns.

In addition to the overall delay of 2.6, the crossplatform parties feature has been bumped from the 2.6 update and moved to another post-2.6 update. We understand that players will be disappointed to hear that the much anticipated crossplatform parties feature has been delayed further. We want to reassure our players that crossplatform parties development is continuing in parallel with the other work for Chivalry 2 updates and that we remain strongly committed to bringing crossplatform parties to Chivalry 2. We aim to share a new ETA with you all when we are able to do so.

A comprehensive list of patch notes for update 2.6 will be published closer to the release of the Reinforced Update.

Chivalry 2 Music with J.D. Spears

J.D. Spears is the man behind the music of Chivalry 2. As a composer, J.D.’s multi-genre work has appeared on multiple television programs including HBO Max’s Ravi Patel’s Pursuit of Happiness, Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, and A+E Networks’s American Pickers. Most recently, J.D. scored Torn Banner Studios’ critically acclaimed video game Chivalry 2. The music has been celebrated and was recently featured by BMI’s (Broadcast Music, Inc.) Composer Series, the G.A.N.G. (Game Audio Network Guild) Composer Spotlight, and The Game Awards.

Be sure to follow us over on our Twitch profile so you get notified every time we go live. You can watch a VOD of our latest stream on our Twitch channel, or archived on our YouTube channel.)

JD has composed many tracks for all of the different scenarios that you hear music in-game. This includes, but is not limited to, warmup music, dynamic music during gameplay, match ending music, map specific music, the main menu music, and more.

https://youtu.be/ilmWt6yn8B8
For the Chivalry 2 Original Game Soundtrack, J.D. had the opportunity to have the Budapest Scoring Orchestra perform all of the iconic music. Take a look at this compilation of footage from the Chivalry 2 recording sessions in Budapest, Hungary.

On stream we showed off a few of the new songs that joined the Chivalry 2 soundtrack in the Tenosian Invasion update. The full set list of songs will be available at a future date, but you can preview these two now:

https://soundcloud.com/tornbanner/join-the-cavalry-feat-hayat-selim-chivalry-2
https://soundcloud.com/tornbanner/fear-will-only-bring-you-death-chivalry-2

Creating an all new sound for the Tenosian Invasion update was certainly a monumental task, but J.D. explains how he was able to nail the new sound while keeping all of the new music in the same spirit of the Chivalry 2 universe. Composing music for the Tenosians allowed for an exploration of sound unlike that for Agatha or for Mason. One of the major additions to the musical sound of Tenosia was the wonderful Hayat Selim and her angelic high notes. See her recording some of the Tenosian music in the video below.

https://youtu.be/0EtWJRM5Nro
In addition to working on all of the new music for Chivalry 2, J.D. also worked alongside Chivalry veteran Ryan Buckley to rework one of the fan favourites from the Chivalry franchise - Duty and Honor. You've no doubt heard it in-game, but here is Duty and Honor II for your listening pleasure.

Be sure to follow the Torn Banner Studios Twitch channel and join us for our next Twitch stream on August 25th. Tomorrow on August 25th we'll be going over the plans for the Reinforced Update, as well as giving you a release date. Be sure to stay tuned.

New Dev Diary and Patch Notes for Update 2.5.3

As Chivalry 2 celebrates 2 million copies sold, Torn Banner Studios talk post-launch support and upcoming content in our new Developer Diary.

Developer Torn Banner Studios and publisher Tripwire Presents announced today that Chivalry 2 has sold over 2 million copies worldwide across all platforms. To celebrate this exciting milestone, Torn Banner Studios has unveiled a brand-new developer diary with a behind-the-scenes retrospective look at the Tenosian Invasion update, which added mounted horse combat, a new faction, and more. In addition, the developers look ahead and share the first details of what’s coming next for the ultimate medieval battlefield.

As discussed in the new developer diary, Torn Banner Studios set out on a mission to double the content scope of Chivalry 2 in a single year, and has officially achieved that goal. Since launch, the team has released numerous, free content updates, adding the new weapons-free Brawl Mode, new Team Objective and Deathmatch maps, and many new weapons, just to name a few. Most recently, they launched their biggest update yet - Tenosian Invasion - alongside the game’s release on Steam, bringing mounted combat, cavalry charges, a brand-new faction, and more to Chivalry 2.

Looking ahead, the developer diary outlines some of the exciting upcoming additions coming to Chivalry 2. These include the Hippodrome, a new tournament-styled map set in the Tenosian faction setting and designed with mounted horse combat in mind, a new Tenosian-inspired weapon called the Katar, a new winter-themed biome featuring snow and ice, and the long-awaited cross-play party social support, which has been highly requested from the community. Players can expect these features and more as Torn Banner reinforces its commitment to supporting and expanding the scope of Chivalry 2 for 2022 and beyond.

Chivalry 2 Patch 2.5.3

Last week we released a minor update patch to address some crash fixes, map balance concerns and general game fixes.

Map Balance Changes

In reviewing our map data and win/lose ratio data, we have noticed that The Razing of Askandir is slightly too difficult for defenders on some objectives, The Breach of Baudwyn is slightly too difficult for attackers on multiple objectives, and that The Raid of Aberfell is too difficult for attackers to progress effectively in the beginning two stages of the map.

The Razing of Askandir
  • Stage 2: Decreased defenders spawn timer from 12 to 10 seconds
  • Stage 3: Decreased objective timer from 5 to 4 minutes

The Breach of Baudwyn
  • Stage 1: Increased objective timer from 7 to 8 minutes
  • Stage 2:
  • Increased defenders spawn timer from 11 to 12 seconds
  • Lowered the HP of catapults from 1400 to 1200 HP
  • Lowered the HP of ballistas from 700 to 600 HP
  • Stage 3:
  • Increased defenders spawn timer from 10 to 12 seconds
  • Decreased attacker spawn timer from 10 to 8 seconds
  • Stage 4: Lowered the time added at the beginning of the stage from 8 to 7 minutes

The Raid of Aberfell
  • Stage 1: Raised the points given by carryable peasants and pigs so only 25 of them are needed to bring back to the boat instead of 30
  • Stage 2: Increased defenders spawn timer from 12 to 15 seconds

Map Fixes
  • Fixed an issue where Peasants would not appear during the final stage of Coxwell
  • Fixed an issue where sitting on the throne in Rudhelm would cause the Mason heir to not spawn
  • Fixed an issue where players would desync during the opening cinematic of The Razing of Askandir and fall into the water

Crash Fixes
  • Fixed a crash that would occur when rapidly getting multiple achievements on Steam
  • Fixed a server crash in relation to team placement

General Fixes
  • Fixed an exploit with commends visually giving more XP than actually was awarded
  • Fixed an exploit where players could fly when downed while on horseback
  • Fixed an issue where feint attacks would occasionally desync for the Raider and Ambusher
  • Fixed an issue where the bombards would cause players to be stuck in midair when knocked over
  • Fixed an issue where the scarf of Tenosian light armour would be visible in first person perspective
  • Fixed an issue with Steam Rich Presence not reliably updating
  • Fixed an issue where players would spawn in a cavalry wave without a horse
  • Fixed an issue where certain LTS maps’ scoreboards were showing the Tenosian faction instead of the map’s intended factions
  • Adjusted charging attacks (such as the spear) collision to prevent players from getting stuck on other players

Chivalry 2 Audio with Buckley!

We're hosting biweekly streams on our Twitch channel where we talk to Torn Banner developers, community members, and we'll soon be debuting upcoming features! Be sure to follow us over on our Twitch profile so you get notified every time we go live. You can watch a VOD of our latest stream on our Twitch channel, or archived on our YouTube channel below.

Our guest in this interview was Ryan Buckley, who is the Audio Director and Audio Engineer for Chivalry 2. He has been a member of the Torn Banner team for many, many years and also did the sound design for Age of Chivalry and Chivalry: Medieval Warfare. You could say he knows his way around by now! There are over 70,000 different sounds so far in the Chivalry 2 library, which is an insane number, all to help flesh out the audio landscape.

Buckley goes into detail on how all of the weapon sounds in Chivalry 2 are made. There is a big emphasis on using several sounds to make up a single weapon sound, and having these sounds randomized so you never hear the same sound twice in a row. This helps with player emersion and allows for the sounds to feel real and natural to the ear while playing. In order to do all of this, our audio engineers use something called Wwise. For every weapon that needs sounds, they also need different and unique sounds for every single attack type that the weapon can do. Below is a screenshot of only some of the sounds made for the Greatsword.

We've heard many compliments regarding the horse audio since the Tenosian Invasion update as well. One of the key components on making the horses sound grounded and a real part of the battlefield is how they sound as they're running around the player. This has to do with attenuation and how the sounds move around you while you're also moving around too. The hoof beats start of distant and grow to a booming stampede as they run past.

Generally one of Buckey's focuses is how the sounds would be impacted by the environment that they are played in to made them feel more grounded. How the sounds echo or reverberate off the environment whether you're inside a castle or out on the grassy battlefield, all of these things are taken into account.

While the bulk of the audio work is sound effects we can't forget about the iconic voice characters that you can choose from. We recently added four new voices, and have a selection of both male and female voices to choose from for all three factions. One of the most difficult parts of recording voices that you might not have thought about is all of that screaming they have to do! Voice actors have to be willing and able to do many takes where they're screaming into the microphone and shredding their voices. It's definitely a challenge recording session to do, but Buckley notes he rarely needs the actors to redo their lines because they get so into the recordings their doing.

One of the new voices this update, the Grizzeled Sentinel, was done by Jas Patrick who is a returning voice actor for Chivalry 2. Jas also recorded for the Imposter! Below is a reel of his Grizzeled Sentinel lines that you can equip in-game right now.

If you've heard the new music brought into the game in the Tenosian Invasion update, you may have heard a wonderful and angelic female voice featured. Here's a peak behind the scenes at that recording.

We can't write a post about audio without talking about J.D. Spears, the man behind the music of Chivalry 2. JD has composed many tracks for all of the different scenarios that you hear music in-game. This includes, but is not limited to, warmup music, dynamic music during gameplay, match ending music, map specific music, the main menu music, and more.
