Dev Update: Hunter Killers
Nils has been busy testing the campaign. Here's what happened:
I was tasked with intercepting a landing force bound for Iceland. Having set up a nice forward position through the campaign map, I managed to inadvertently broach the sail getting to periscope depth. That got the attention of the escorts, but since losing Iceland was not an option I decided to brave the gauntlet of RBU barrages, air dropped torpedoes and SS-N-14's before finally managing to hide under this Alligator landing ship. The escorts can be seen in the background looking for me.
The AI will, upon detection, designate a pair of escorts, hunter and killer respectively, and they will work with any aircraft or helicopters that are present. The hunter will track you and relay targeting info to the killer, who will engage you with various weaponry.
We also see the effects of sonar masking where noise from the landing ship is drowning out noise from my Skipjack, providing a place to hide from the escorts.
Unfortunately it was all for nothing... Having lost the initiative and evading the escorts for so long, most landing ships escaped. Sorry Iceland.
Dev Update: Narwhal
Just finished importing the new and improved ship models into the game and we're pleased to announce that the Narwhal class made it in as an additional playable submarine. This brings the final list of playable submarines to:
Skipjack
Permit (Thresher)
Sturgeon
Narwhal
Los Angeles
Here's a couple of screenshots of the Narwhal cruising the icy north.
Dev Update: Ports
It was a busy weekend at Killerfish Games and after much work we're pleased to announce that ports have made it into Cold Waters.
Ports serve as strategic locations that can be lost or recaptured as the ground war in Europe unfolds. Some ports have airfields and keeping these under your control will enable friendly recon aircraft to patrol the seas looking for enemy movement. But if the enemy occupies these locations, they will be able to launch their recon aircraft instead.
Ports are also the focus of insertion missions. For these you will need to return to base, pick up a SEAL team and then make your way to the target port. On arrival, you'll run the gambit of enemy ASW patrol ships as well as aircraft, helicopters and mine fields in an attempt to drop off your SEAL team while remaining undetected. If successful, your spec ops will perform sabotage behind enemy lines.
