Conqueror's Blade

Behind The Scenes: Zweihanders (5-Star Unit)

Conqueror’s Blade: Knightfall features three new Seasonal Units to add to your ranks, inspired by the knights of the Teutonic Order. The Zweihanders are the final Unit available to unlock and take their name from the historical greatsword that changed the course of battle in the 16th century.

We sat down with the Lead Combat and Balance Designer at Booming Tech to learn more about the inspiration behind the Zweihanders (5-Star Unit).

Q: The Zweihanders gain lots of immunity to crowd control effects with their attacks—do you have any tips for countering this in battle?

A: Their movements are slow and lumbering, but once they start attacking they will not stop. Experienced commanders are able to judge their movements in advance and find gaps in their attacks with powerful shock corps.

Q: A ‘zweihander’ is the historical name for a greatsword requiring two hands to wield. It was not actually used in fighting but used to strike down opposing pikes and open gaps in the enemy’s formation. Why did you use this moniker for this particular Unit?

A: War is a team effort, and the most important thing for a team is cooperation. Such a huge sword is destined to be difficult to operate, but this does not mean that this sword is not powerful enough. I believe that everyone dreams of becoming a knight wielding a huge sword.

Q: What role do you see the Zweihanders playing on the battlefield?

A: They are the vanguard of heavy infantry with high attack, defence, and recovery, capable of sustaining combat on the frontlines.

Q: Are there any other especially aggressive Units you could compare them to?

A: There are many corps that have similar abilities, such as the Iron Reapers, the Varangian Guards, and the Silahdars, but the Zweihander's skills include more means of making sustained and long-lasting attacks.

Conqueror’s Tales: Copernicus and the Order of the Universe

While the Teutonic Order and its knights that inspire Conqueror’s Blade: Knightfall are known for their crusades and sieges, their rivals were changing the course of history with scientific discoveries that would alter the world and how we see it forever.

Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) was born in Toruń, Poland, and as well as his famous work as an astronomer, he was a true Renaissance man and also busied himself with the study of medicine, economics, mathematics, military strategy, and law.

Nicolaus was named after his copper merchant father, who was heavily involved in the era’s politics and actively supported Poland against the Teutonic Order. The Teutonic Order built a castle in Toruń in the 13th century, and it became the base for their conquest of Prussia.

However, Copernicus did not stay in Toruń and called many places home throughout his illustrious life and career.

Thwarting The Teutonic Order

From 1516–1521, Copernicus lived at Olsztyn (Allenstein) Castle as the economic administrator of Warmia, which included Olsztyn (Allenstein) and Pieniężno (Mehlsack). During this time, he penned a manuscript called ‘Locations of Deserted Fiefs’, which sought to populate those fiefs with farmers and strengthen the economy.

In January of 1521, the Siege of Olsztyn (or the Siege of Allenstein) took place as part of the Polish–Teutonic War. Copernicus directed the defence of Olsztyn and thwarted the attack, and the Teutonic Knights' force was forced to withdraw. Copernicus also represented the Polish side in the ensuing peace negotiations.

Not content with just studying the stars in the safety of his study, Copernicus cemented himself as truly loyal and brave thanks to this act.

Astronomy And Altruism

Possibly Copernicus’ greatest accomplishment and one of the most important discoveries ever made is the heliocentric theory. According to the heliocentric theory, which is now considered common knowledge, Earth and the other planets revolve around the Sun and not the other way round, as had been previously thought.

Copernicus' work changed the way people used physics and astronomy to understand the universe and began a scientific revolution.

After Copernicus’ death in 1543, his work ‘On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres’, was published. Within this book, Copernicus presented scientific evidence which supported his theory.

“Finally we shall place the Sun himself at the centre of the Universe.”

Copernicus wasn’t just tending to scientific matters during this time, as soon his expertise in medicine would be called upon by a former enemy.

In 1541, Duke Albert, the former Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, summoned Copernicus to Königsberg to see the Duke’s counsellor, George von Kunheim, who had become seriously ill, and whose illness had stumped the Prussian doctors already aiding him. Despite Duke Albert’s affiliations with the Teutonic Order and his Lutheran faith, Copernicus went willingly to help, feeling that Albert and George were not such bad people. A month passed and the counsellor recovered, and Copernicus returned to Frombork.

This selfless act despite the history between Copernicus and the Teutonic Order proves that this astronomer was not only knowledgeable but incredibly kind.

Frombork Cathedral

Copernicus’ Cathedral

Sometime between 1510-1512, Copernicus finally settled in Frombork, where he continued his astronomy studies of astronomy and observations. Frombork is known as “The Jewel of Warmia” because of its many historical sites, including the Museum of Copernicus, his grave, and the northwestern tower he purchased in 1514.

From this tower, Copernicus did the majority of his stargazing and observations, and his studio within the cathedral in Frombork was where he created ‘On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres’.

Breaking the Lore: Knightfall

Ostaria is a landlocked region known for many things: bitter bandits, excellent equines, and noble knights.

The Order of the Sword has long watched over this territory, and now venture forth to take back lands they previously ruled over. However, this respected faction has fallen into decay.

Suffering from a series of bad leaders who lost their domain to bandits, the Order must now take on one final fight in a last hurrah of chivalry.

The wheel of history is turning, and the Order is determined to stay on top. Outfitted in elaborate and striking armours, these corps and their commanders are both feared and envied in equal measure. With several bands of loyal soldiers at their disposal, the Order has more than enough reinforcements to fill the tall order of retaking their enclaves.

The Schutzdieners are medical marvels on the battlefield, providing long-range healing to their injured allies. Their cavalry arrives in the form of the Kriegsbruders, sword-and-shield-toting knights on horseback who act as the armoured fist of the Order. The cherry on top of this impressive force is the Zweihanders, dismounted knights who disrupt and deny enemy frontlines.

Interview: Bai Yi Qiu (Lead Designer)

Conqueror’s Blade: Knightfall has descended, bringing new Units and inspiration from the medieval Teutonic Order and its knights.

Bai Yi Qiu, Lead Designer at Booming Tech, answered your burning questions about the new Season and future plans for Conqueror’s Blade.

Conqueror’s Blade: Knightfall was released on September 14; what inspired this Season?

Initially, after two Seasons with Eastern themes, we aimed to introduce content from Western battlefields to enrich the game. When considering themes, we sought to capture the raw, early-warfare essence that the game had during its initial launch. This led us to the concept of the Teutonic Order, which was a popular choice among players in one of our previous surveys.

The Units have a medieval German-inspired look and names. Can we refer to Knightfall as a “medieval German season”?

We did draw inspiration from the Teutonic Knights and the combat styles of that time and region. However, the Teutonic Order included members from various countries and cultures across central and eastern Europe. While it conveys a hint of a Germanic theme, it doesn't represent the entirety of what "German" means to us. So, we can't definitively label this Season as exclusively "German."

How did you choose which Units to add to the Season?

Firstly, we examined authentic historical references to understand how knights of that era engaged in battle and identified the most iconic weapons and combat styles that could pique players' interest. Secondly, we considered how introducing these new Units would positively contribute to the diversity of the battlefield in the current game ecosystem, offering gameplay experiences players may not have encountered before.

The Schutzdieners Unit combines both offensive and supportive abilities, including the ability to heal allies. Can you tell us about the process of designing this Unit?

We believe this unique gameplay style will introduce different tactical possibilities and alter the game's dynamics. Inspired by the stories surrounding the Knightly Orders and their association with holiness and healing practices, we created a Unit that possesses the ability to provide healing and support in addition to combat prowess.

The Zweihander is an iconic weapon carried by the new 5-Star Zweihanders Unit. Many players are asking if there are plans to introduce this sword as a separate Weapon Class for Heroes in the future. Do you have any plans for this?

For this year, we don't have plans to introduce a new Weapon Class for Heroes. Currently, we have a variety of Weapon Classes and Units, and our focus is on balancing and developing new mechanics for Units. However, we recognise that the Zweihander is a highly anticipated weapon. If we were to introduce a new Weapon Class in the future, it would certainly be a strong contender.

The overall tone of the Knightfall Season trailer is notably different from the previous Sengoku Season. It’s darker and more brutal, and many players praised it for its "warlike" feeling. How did you achieve this?

In the previous Season, we experimented with a style reminiscent of action-packed manga in our video trailer, which is a characteristic Japanese artistic approach. For Knightfall, we aimed to portray how the people who inspired the Season engaged in warfare driven by their faith. They were more zealous, and their environment and struggles were harsher, naturally resulting in a heavier atmosphere. Every video trailer atmosphere we create is indeed intentional, aiming to convey the essence of the season's theme.

Can you share some details about the development team's future plans?

Our top priority is improving the game ecosystem, addressing several challenges such as the gap between new and veteran players, PvE content, Territory War gameplay, Unit and Hero balance, and the upcoming Performance Optimisation Campaign "Nirvana”.

You recently engaged with players during China Joy, directly answering their questions. Do you plan to organise more meetings like this in the future?

Absolutely, engaging directly with players face-to-face is part of our ongoing strategy. We will continue to hold similar events to communicate with players, share our thoughts, and listen to your feedback. Your input helps make the game better, and we're preparing to meet players around the world in various regions.

Finally, is there anything else you would like to say to Conqueror's Blade players?

Conqueror's Blade has been online for over four years, nearly five, and we're immensely grateful for your support throughout this journey. As we make significant adjustments to the game's ecosystem and optimisation in the future, if you have any thoughts or suggestions, please don't hesitate to reach out to the development team via livestream events and social channels.

Behind The Scenes: Kriegsbruders (4-Star Unit)

To arms! The Kriegsbruders are the second Teutonic-inspired Unit available to unlock and command in Conqueror’s Blade: Knightfall.

We spoke to the Lead Combat and Balance Designer at Booming Tech about this new 4-Star Unit to explore their historical inspiration, battle viability, and more!

Q: The Teutonic Knights were noted for their heavy cavalry, and the Kriegsbruders definitely lived up to this real-world inspiration. What inspired them?

A: We took deep inspiration from the Teutonic Knights’ journey to knighthood and their many campaigns. They were trained to expect hostility and resistance, but their unwavering faith in their mission made them mighty warriors and a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield.

Q: The Kriegsbruders are the first sword-and-shield cavalry Unit in Conqueror’s Blade. What made you bring them to the fore in Knightfall?

A: Sword and shield regiments are loved by many players, and I personally am also very interested in them. Although they are knights, I wanted them to be highly effective as a heavy cavalry Unit too.

Q: This Unit is lined with full-throttle fighters, who do not charge and retreat, but rather engage in direct assaults. What else do you want players to know about them?

A: Kriegsbruders are not just aggressive fighters. Their sophisticated armour allows them to withstand many attacks without expending much energy on defence. Though it is difficult for heavy cavalry to retreat in a chaotic battlefield, they take inspiration from Teutonic Knights and channel their faith to support their mission and fight until the last.

Q: The Kriegsbruders are great at blocking. Do you recommend using them as a frontline force to break formations?

A: You can definitely do this, but it's best to ensure you have enough reinforcements to follow quickly after the formation breaks. They can disrupt enemies in a short period of time and rush the enemy's interior, but they very much rely on their allies to finish the job.

Q: Which Units would you compare Kriegsbruders to in terms of strength and utility?

A: The Dagger Axe Lancers, Fire Lancers, and the Yanyuedao Cavalry. These Units are all inspired by Eastern cavalries, so it’s inevitable that a Western challenger should appear!

Nation Cup: Winners

After an almighty clash of countries, the results are in from the Nation Cup! Hosted from August 13–September 6, this community-run tournament saw nations clash and champions rise.

Thank you to the organiser Madshin, our shoutcasters (including Templeshot, MarkOfGee, and Seabee), all our Community Managers, and of course, all teams, players, and everyone rooting for their champions!

CHAMPIONS: GERMANY

Well done to Germany, who seized the crown and took the W. They were led by their captain DunkelKagan, who said their team’s best moment was in the final. “The moment when we proved we are the best nation in Conqueror's Blade. The biggest fail is pretty clear: there was no failure throughout the entire tournament. We took all losses as a win since we learned from it. No Ls, only Ws!"

SECOND PLACE: TURKEY

Coming up hot in second place, Turkey took the silver. They were led by their captain Buminkagan, who ruminated on their final performance. “Although we generally had the upper hand in the siege battle against the Germans, some small defensive mistakes on our part led to a draw.

“In the Deathmatch, they were generally superior. The biggest mistake we made on our side was some of our players getting grabbed by enemy Mauls. Apart from that, I can say that we played poorly with the Monastics we used in the base. If there is another Nation Cup, we want to make up for these mistakes and take first place as Türkiye.”

Also, it was the only game that was decided in Field Battle. I would love to see some more 8v8 Field Battle tournaments.”
