National Geographic Day: Exploring Scotland

National Geographic Day is marked every year on January 27 and pays tribute to the incredible National Geographic Magazine and Society. Funding research and conservation projects worldwide, National Geographic asks us to look at the world we live in and appreciate the true beauty and fragility of nature, as well as the people living here and their cultures.

To celebrate National Geographic Day, we’ve decided to take a look at the physical and social geography of the real-life land that inspired the Highlands in Season X: Highlanders-—Scotland!

Territory

Just as your House fights for dominion over fiefs and cities in the Seasonal Campaign, so too did ancient Scots as they claimed territories throughout history. While England was constantly encroaching on Scotland’s borders, prompting warriors like William Wallace and Robert the Bruce to push them back and confront them in the name of independence, Scotland spent some time in the medieval period trying to expand their own domains.

One of these expansion attempts was in Ireland, an isle to the west of Scotland. While the First Scottish War of Independence against England was taking place, Robert the Bruce’s brother Edward landed in Larne, Co. Antrim in 135 to invade Ireland and install himself on the throne as per the King’s orders to create a larger united front against England. This didn’t go to plan, as a famine killed off most of the Scots armies, and they failed to hold onto captured areas.

Topography and Temperature

Scotland is the most mountainous region in Great Britain and is characterised by dramatic peaks, lush forests, and many islands. It’s also home to the highest peak in the entirety of the United Kingdom—-Ben Nevis. Standing loftily at a summit height of 1,345 metres, the mountain attracts thousands of visitors per year, all set on conquering it.

Scotland is usually thought of as having extremely cold weather, but VisitScotland.com states that the climate is “actually quite moderate and very changeable”. In the Summer months, the average maximum temperature can range from 15°C (59°F) to 17°C (63 °F), so while it might not be arctic, it’s still a tad chilly. Brr!

Towns

Edinburgh has served as the capital of Scotland since 1437, but the iconic city actually replaced Scone, a medieval town in Perth. After James I was assassinated in Perth, the throne was moved to Edinburgh Castle, and its association with kings and coronations ended.

Several well-known Scottish municipalities also underwent name changes throughout history, including Perth itself, which was previously named “St. John’s Toun” in honour of the town’s church dedicated to St John the Baptist. St. Andrews, the site of the famous golf course frequented by Mary Queen of Scots, went through many renamings, including “Kilrule” after St Regulus (or Rule).

You can observe National Geographic Day by exploring the Scottish-inspired ancestral home of the Highlands, Broch Eastray, and reading up about the must-see landmarks Scotland has to offer.

Commemorate Burns Night with a Free Gift!

Hogmanay has come and gone, and as we venture further into the new year, we mustn’t forget another special day for Scotland—Burns Night! Read on to learn more about this special occasion, and to claim an exclusive free gift from MY.GAMES Market.

While not officially observed as a national holiday, the life and works of poet Robert Burns are celebrated on his birthday, January 25, with staple Scottish foods, parties, and tributes made to the great bard. Some of his most famous work includes Tam O’ Shanter, Auld Lang Syne, and A Red, Red Rose, invoking themes of empathy, encouragement, and everyday life. Modern Scots still adore his poems and songs for their universal themes like love, life, and a bit of humour for good measure.

The very first Burns Night was held by his friends on the fifth anniversary of his death in 1801, with a feast and performances of his brilliant works made to honour his life and cultural contributions.

Traditional Scottish dishes and delicacies are consumed as part of a Burns Night meal, including haggis, neeps and tatties, and of course, a few slugs of whisky. As the evening goes on, his poems are recited, toasts given, and to end the night, Auld Lang Syne is sung by all the guests with crossed arms and joined hands.

You can celebrate Burns Night in Conqueror’s Blade with a free gift, available to claim via MY.GAMES Market until February 1 (23:59 CET)!

Conqueror’s Tales: Snow in the Trenches

A New Player’s Guide to Conqueror’s Blade

Starting out in any MMO can feel a little daunting, especially when the player base ranges from novices to day-one veterans. If you’re confused about where to start in your journey for glory, look no further than our new player’s guide to Conqueror’s Blade!

You can also catch up on the essentials with our beginner’s guide.

Choosing your weapon in Conqueror’s Blade

The perfect weapon is key to any Warlord’s victory in Conqueror’s Blade, and with twelve to choose from, you can try out all the options until you find a weapon that suits your playstyle.

Poleaxe

Pick up a Poleaxe if you fancy crowd-control effects and being on the frontline of combat. The weapon inflicts slow but heavy strikes, so don’t expect to slash and dash.

Pike

The Pike is great for harassing due to its extremely mobile nature and versatile skills. Couple that with a short skill cooldown, and you’ll be poking foes all day.

Spear

Great for those who want to stay atop their mount in battles and poke their enemies with a long sharp stick.

Maul

With huge damage potential against both Units and Warlords, the Maul is unwieldy yet devastating.

Longbow

For those who like to find a comfortable place to snipe from, this long-range bow is definitely in your wheelhouse.

Shortbow

A shorter-ranged bow, the Shortbow inflicts single target damage.

Longsword

The Longsword is heavily oriented around defensive play and supporting allies with their abilities. A steadfast presence on the battlefield!

Shortsword

The classic “Sword and Board” is built around pressing the attack with heavy armour and skills oriented around leading from the front.

Nodachi

This weapon focuses on healing the player through attacks and would benefit from well-planned use of its cooldowns.

Glaive

The Glaive is a versatile weapon with a lot of different possible builds. It particularly excels when used for powerful mounted attacks.

Dual Blades

Become a deadly assassin when you wield the Dual Blades, inflicting heavy damage to single targets, and capable of infiltrating ranks.

Musket

Dealing heavy damage as a close-range class, the Musket is perfect for those missing the more modern side of weaponry.

Conqueror’s Tales: Mary Queen of Scots

In medieval England, two families fought for the crown: the Tudors and the Stewarts (also spelt Steuart or Stuart) were related by blood, but their struggle came to a head with Mary Queen of Scots and her cousin Elizabeth I both staked a claim for the English throne. This great rivalry between the daughters of Henry VIII and James V has painted Mary as feisty, impulsive, and “a bad woman” in the history books—but what was she really like?

Scots at the time (due to their somewhat chaotic recent history) may have been thought of as brash and hostile, but Mary was quite the opposite. She was demure, elegantly tall, and well-educated, primarily thanks to her French upbringing from age five, where she was exposed to all the finery and dignity of the French court.

Ascending to the throne over 200 years after it was reclaimed by the Scots by her very own ancestor King Robert the Bruce, the far-from-brutish Mary had a lot of heroism to live up to.

Mary set the trend of wearing white for weddings when it was traditionally a colour of mourning.

We’re here to set the record straight on some of Mary’s finer points (as well as her flaws) and explore how Mary Queen of Scots may spend her days—and how the clans would receive her—if she ruled over the Highlands in Conquerors Blade...

How Do You Solve a Problem Like Mary?

While Mary was said to be a “strong leader”, her obsession with gaining the English throne and willingness to accept her advisors’ guidance as gospel led her subjects to dislike her. Historian Dr Wormald revealed that Mary was unsuitable for her position and simply unwilling to try to govern, mostly because of her wanting for the English crown. This possible distaste for her own country lead to this complaint from Mary herself:

“My subjects in Scotland do their duty in nothing, nor have they performed their part in one thing that belongeth to them. I am their queen, and so they call me, but they do not use me so…They must be taught to know their duties.”

As the Highlanders fight for their freedom from encroaching Loegrian forces, they may also detest a monarch seeking to rule elsewhere and couldn’t make her own decisions.

There’s Something About Mary

Astrologists will be intrigued to discover that Mary Queen of Scots was a true Sagittarius—defined by her fun-loving and social personality. Mary cast aside the tradition of the shy retiring female monarch and became the first woman to play golf in Scotland when she teed off at St. Andrews, the oldest golf course in the world. Rumours suggest that she coined the term “caddie” when using military cadets to carry her clubs.

Mary also engaged in other unsightly hobbies such as disguising herself as a stable boy and exploring the streets of Edinburgh at night (Princess Jasmine, is that you?).

Yes, Mary’s free-spirited personality may have been seen as a hindrance by some, but we think the Highland clans would relish a queen who indulged in a bit of fun every now and then. Perhaps she would even join the Houndsmen on their hunting expeditions or dance along to the Bagpipers tunes.

While Mary may not have ruled with an iron fist like her cousin Elizabeth, and her upbringing delightfully posh, we think the clan chieftains would accept Mary with open arms, and perhaps even support her conquest for the English throne.
