We have just launched Creature Lab Steam Playtests and you are more than welcome to join it NOW! Bring your friends, tell your Mom, everyone is welcome!
We have added some features that were not present in the Steam Next Fest demo we shared in February. Enjoy the game and please share your feedback. That said, we would appreciate it if you took the time to fill out the questionnaire included in the demo after playing the game. This will very much help us in the further development of Creature Lab!
Keep in mind that unlike the demo we showed earlier, playtests may feature more bugs, occasionally missing localization, or features that still aren’t quite finished. The goal of this playtest is to check if our recent post-demo changes to the tutorial are intuitive and if new Quality of Life (QoL) improvements hit home. You may also play with a controller this time around!
The Playtests will last for 7 days so join while you can!
Be advised that initially, the playtest version will only support a 1920x1080 screen resolution. A patch will soon release that will let you change the game's resolution. Thank you for your understanding.
If you want to reach us directly, we’re here for you on our official Discord server!
What’s more, PAX East 2022 is now live as well - if you’re in Boston, don’t be a stranger and drop by to say hello at booth 15019 (Boston Convention & Exhibition Center). We will create some monsters together ;)
It’s me again. I noticed that many people liked what I did during the so-called ‘Steam Next Fest’. My number of followers has drastically increased and that makes me want to accelerate my brilliant plans even further.
I need to show my work to even more people and gather even more feedback. And maybe finally get the recognition that my work deserves! I have a perfect plan for that…
On April 21 I will launch a Creature Lab PLAYTEST on Steam. For one week, I will let intruders wander around my laboratory and search for any imperfections. But I will only let 20 000 people enter! If you want to help me do science stuff, hurry up and click the playtest button on the Steam page!
I have learned much from the last time I presented my work and this will make my creations even more spectacular. Now I need you to come to my aid again.
Find the people you trust. Tell them that I need help. Visit my laboratory. And burn this message before the military finds out. Oh wait, it’s digital… oh, you’ll figure it out!
Yours, Scientist
Sign up to join the Steam Playtests starting on April 21! It’s first-come, first-served, so make sure to reserve your seat quickly. Until the Playtests start, we will disable the public demo so that you can have a fresh perspective on things while testing ;)
We also plan to show more new stuff, such as controller support, a new monster, and more!
With every day I get one step closer to perfection...
And now I'm ready for a brand new version of my work!

DEMO AVAILABLE NOW!
So, if you're still interested... this 'DEMO' thing I mentioned before is already available.
Play it, learn more about my work and let me know what you think on Discord... but please, be discrete! Feds were lurking around my place yesterday. Not sure what to think.
Anyway, I'm going to remove it in a week or so (can't let them track me)...
Also, check this short movie. A sneak peek into what's going on in my lab now:

Until next time!
PSST… PLAY CREATURE LAB DEMO AT STEAM FESTIVAL (FEB 21-28)
They call me a mad man ... Am I mad? Or maybe, just maybe, what I do can’t be comprehended by mere mortals? I don't know anymore… too much noise and hustle in my head. It looks like I will soon be able to secretly share my work with you, though. And you will judge by yourself whether what I am doing makes sense.
I’m in hurry, so listen carefully.
Here’s how I’m going to make it happen. I heard about this so-called Steam Next Fest (Feb 21-28) where various geeks share their work (it’s about games or other silly things, I don’t care). I decided to do the same. Undercover, of course. Now, here’s a short guide on what you will need to do (burn it after you read it!) on February 21st.
<*> Visit Creature Lab Steam card on Monday after the festival starts <*> Play the demo
Simple, isn’t it?
When you do all that, I will show you a glimpse of things I’m now working on, share some info about mutagens and, well, the ‘objects’... if you know what I mean (remember, it’s highly confidential!!!). Don’t forget to let me know what you think, I usually check this Discord channel to receive messages:
I have to go now. If they ask you who told you that… You didn't hear it from me… I got Feds on my back…
I lost one of my brilliant creations this week. It seems unthinkable but it happened. Maybe the military found it. I wouldn't be surprised if these uneducated savages ruined countless hours of my work with their toy guns.
This should never happen again. Next time I send my minion into the city, I will make sure to...
Change its limbs
As excellent as my creations are, they are no match for reinforced steel or powerful explosives. At least not by default. As the military starts to increase its presence in the city, I need to take extra steps to protect my work... and myself.
I can collect a DNA sample of any of my minions and create a brand new limb tailored to them. These new limbs enhance the battle properties of a mutant and allow it to take on powerful foes... maybe even armored troop transports or tanks!
Creating a new limb requires generous use of mutagens so I should do it only once I gather a decent stockpile of them. I also have to ensure that this limb is created with a mutagen that matches a mutant the limb is meant for. Otherwise, the shock might cause my creation to expire prematurely.
Every limb has different properties. By changing the legs, I can make a sturdy monster faster, so that it takes the shots which would destroy other creatures. By changing the limbs I can make a minion capable of ranged attacks. I can prepare for every situation, as long as I plan in advance - as it takes a few days to grow some of the more powerful appendages.
But the result - oh, the result is definitely worth it!
The above is our fifth "Scientist Log". While its main focus was changing limbs, we also want to show you a quick tease of a short cinematic that we're working on for the demo. Enjoy! [previewyoutube="PUMiaQziHJw;full"]
This is our last post for the year 2021. From the bottom of our hearts, we wish you happy holidays and all the best in the coming year!
The most important lesson I learned over the years is: you cannot do it alone. Even if you're a genius working on your eighth thesis, you still need help to deal with the mundane stuff.
Although I am not only mentally but also physically excellent, I still cannot be in many places at once. I need servants to do my bidding. People to fetch me the ingredients I need, deal with the annoying investigators, or "recruit" more test subjects. And ideally, they shouldn't ask any questions. Thankfully, my research means that I don't need to recruit actual people. My lab-grown mutants will do.
Monster Creation
My beautiful creations can take care of my errands while I focus my attention on science. My brilliant mutagens can animate corpses and morph them into more practical shapes. What they lack in intelligence, they make up for in brawn. If I send one of my mutants to fetch me some reagents, it might not bring me exactly what I want, but it will still bring me more stuff than I could otherwise gather.
Of course, my incredible mutagens alone won't do the trick. As explained above, I need a body to morph into a proper monster. Thankfully, fresh corpses are never difficult to acquire. Especially when you have an army of mutants at your command.
Once I have a body to alter, the rest of the process is relatively straightforward. I designed a mutation chamber where I can place a fresh corpse. Then I just need to fill the tanks with mutagen and start the process. Any mutagen will do but I best remember what mutagen was used. My creations act differently, depending on the substance that was used to mutate them.
Of course, caution is advised during the entire process. Should I forget to sedate a freshly made monster, they might even turn on me and attack!
While creating a new creature is easier than discovering new mutagens, where my genius truly shines is the endless possibilities that monster creation entails. Firstly, the choice of the mutagen can infuse my servants with supernatural strength or unmatched reflexes. And secondly, I can further enhance my monsters by feeding them more mutagen or by changing their limbs! But this is a whole separate topic...
The above is our fourth "Scientist Log". Monster creation is meant to be a simple and satisfying process, a bit of a breather after difficult experiments in the lab. Upon their creation, monsters gain a bonus to stats enhanced by a mutagen that the player used. This bonus is permanent and determines what a given creature is going to be best at.
We won't be able to post such devlogs on a monthly basis like we used to. The entire team is very focused on the production and working on a demo. But fear not, we will continue posting devlogs, it might just be a little irregular at times ːshockedskullDPWː
