Since Cube Racer 2 happened to be developed in Germany, we're taking part in the Games Germany sale on Steam. After registering for the sale, we realized, that our game was free to play. So we called for various meetings, called in some external counsil and reached to our pets for advice. But no solution was found, since nobody was able to make a sale on a free product.
Finally, when walking through the black forest, like we do every day, a little cube jumped out of the bushes. He was of a darkish, white color, and the only thing he mumbled with a voice like butter was: "Ingame purchases can also be put on sale".
That's when it hit us: We could put the cube pass on sale. We ran back home, opened the project and were about to make an astounding discount of 3%. But then our coders remembered how lazy they were. So they just commented out the whole purchasing process, and implemented the cube pass for free.
Since it seemed to be our companys' direction anyway, we left the cube pass free for purchase, and pushed it all in todays update.
Also, there is a new obstacle. Whoever unlocks it first may keep it. All other players, too tho. ;)
Stroppo Week
A very special event takes place from 8th till 15th June.
According to the new Cube Racer 2 music video we will celebrate this piece of art in the game itself. Even if the text of the song is German it's worth for everybody to listen to it!
The event includes the following content:
Stroppo music video screen in the main menu
Stroppo event rewards which you can collect in the main menu
A Stroppo challenge map!
Stroppo flags (are actually there for at least two weeks now, whoops)
Confetti
A Stroppo playing Cube Racer again at 20pm UTC+1 on June 8th
A new racetrack, dedicated completely to the wonders of Stroppo
See you all online dressed with the fitting Stroppo cube skins of course!
Map editor and custom lobbies
Hey fellow racers,
with this major update we mainly released our map editor! You can build your very own cube racer 2 maps now. And since that isn't enough for us, there is even more:
Map Editor
There is a map editor now!!! The map editor is not built into the game, it is a separate software. You can find the editor and all available instructions on our webpage Map Editor installation
Server Browser/Lobby Rework
With the help of Moto, we reorganized the whole menu of lobbies and queueing for games. There are now four distinct modes to play the game:
Quick match (If you just want to be matched onto a public server with other random players)
Custom game (Create your own custom game. There you can change all settings like map, amount of rounds etc.)
Server browser (See all running servers, and choose where you want to join. Can also be used to join the custom lobbies of friends)
Splitscreen (As usual)
Custom lobbies
If you create a custom lobby through the main menu, you can change a lot of game settings. These include maximum players, amount of rounds, team race, skills, skill boxes, gravity, building credits, building time, ban obstacles and set the current map.
If other people queue through quick match, they won’t get matched onto custom servers. So custom games need to be joined through the server browser.
Custom games are also needed to play maps created with the map editor. Only there you can select the custom maps you have subscribed to in the steam workshop. Other players should not need to have subscribed to these maps prior to joining the server, since the game will dynamically download the needed maps through steam.
Voting
The voting processed is now integrated into the UI. The initiation of votes is now done through the escape menu. All voting options can be selected and started there. The voting process itself is also integrated into the UI now. In the top left screen, a little panel is shown, showing the current vote and offering the option to vote yes or no with F5 and F6.
General changes/updates
It might sound unbelievable, but yes, you can look up and down now when using mouse movement
On the lowest graphics quality settings, the weather particles are now disabled to improve performance.
We tried to prevent the savegame files corruption bug from occurring, but since I wasn’t able to identify the problem completely, there is only a workaround built in now, which might repair the corrupted files itself, but since it isn’t possible to reliably reproduce the bug, it hasn’t been tested yet.
The pipe stuck check has been improved, to further prevent people from getting stuck inside of pipes
The elo should now only be affected, if a player took part in at least three rounds. Since this hasn’t been tested as well, it might only take two rounds. If you have feedback about that, leave it on the discord, so we can further improve this.
The angled pipe has been improved and should not cause the game to lag on all clients anymore. This was not fully tested as well, so it remains to be seen, whether this works as expected :)
Obstacles
All obstacles were reorganized into six categories instead of four. The new categories are more inspired by the purpose of obstacles, rather then trying to classify the type of the obstacle. This should make finding a certain obstacle more intuitive and improve the building experience. There are also new icons for all six categories.
The bottom bar of the building menu has been increased in width, so there is no need to scroll now in any category. For now… ;)
Magnets have been balanced. The range is now reduced from 40 to 25, and the strength was reduced from 50000 to 37500.
Tutorial
One wall of the tutorial contains a little gap now. This requires new players to hold only SPACE and nothing else, in order to be able to climb that wall.
Guys, have fun!
First post-release patch
This is the first patch, fixing some issues which we encountered in the first amazing week after release!
Kill Log
We updated the kill logs appearing on the right screen side. Now if some players already reached the goal, the kill logs no longer overlap with their playernames
Horns & Spamming
We had some few players, who made good use of honking the sh*** out of their horns :D Although this is kinda funny, we wanted to do something about it, in consideration of the mental health of our players. So now as soon as a player reaches the goal, he cannot honk anymore
And further we added the mute function. By entering /mute in the chat window, you can mute a specific player. Then you won't see any of his chat messages, and you won't hear him honking anymore.
Steam invites
It was possible, to break people's steam client by inviting them ~1000 times per second. This should not be possible anymore, thanks to a little invite colldown :)
Maps
We fixed the start boxes of many maps. It was possible, to bulid black holes or magnets very close to the start. So players got sucked or pulled or even died due to deadly obstacles, which were placed very near to the starting box. This should now not be possible anymore
Weather
We reduced the brightness of the sun in some weather settings, since it was blooming all over the place. Let us know, if you are still being blinded, then we reduce that even more ;)
Player Level
We increased the maximum player level, since some players have already reached the previous maximum level. Now this shouldn't be a problem anymore for a long time ;D
We're now working on some more bigger fixes and content, so stay tuned, and happy chaos :)

Summer Update
Welcome to this summer update v0.166
We've been working on this big update the last couple of weeks, and just released it with some fixes today. It introduces the new gamemode called "Skill Boxes", where you play with collectable skills every round. Below you can find the complete changelog for this update
New gamemode: Skillboxes
At every checkpoint, 4 skillboxes spawn and can be collected, dropping a random skill for the player
The gamemode can be voted to active, or you can now queue with the desired gamemode settings (See below)
Gamemode settings in lobby
Before you queue, you can now select all gamemode settings you want to play with
If no matching server is found, you will be put into an empty server, with all the gamemode settings you entered
Ingame
When all players are stuck at the same position, a skillbox with an explode skill will spawn at the last checkpoint after 3 minutes. One player can use it, to blow up the difficult part
When a player uses his skill, an animation will pop up on the left side of the screen for all the players to see
Added explode skill (finally)
When spectating a player, your camera now follows the camera of the spectated player
Added free-cam mode when spectating players
While you are frozen, you cannot use any skills
Obstacles
New obstacle: Magnet
New upgrade obstacle for Portal
New upgrade obstacle for Wrecking Ball
New upgrade obstacle to Axe
The strong button trap version was made more expensive, from 13 to 27
When a player gets pushed off the track, or boosted into something deadly, the touched obstacles no longer give helpfull points, but instead will be counted as deadly points
Maps
Added new map with built-in funnel and summersault
Skins & Horns
Added 4 new horns
Added a new skin
New season pass has been added
Special events during Steam Next Fest
Hello everybody,
as part of our participation in the Steam Next Fest, we have three disctinct ingame events for Cube Racer 2. They will start and end according to our schedule below, so keep in mind to play at the given times to try them out.
Wrecking Ball Madness
17.06 (1pm UTC) - 18.06 (1pm UTC) In this event, two random players can each build one wrecking ball onto the track in the first round of the game. This makes it all so more chaotic and interesting during the last four rounds.
Sewers
19.06 (1pm UTC) - 20.06 (11pm UTC) During this event, pipes are unlocked for all players, and they are absolutely cheap, causing a loooot of pipes through the map and obstacles.
Mini Wrecking Ball Event
21.06 (1pm UTC) - 22.06 (1pm UTC) In this event, the wrecking balls are unlocked for everybody, but they are very tiny and fast swinging, because they slipped into a shrinking machine, obviously.
Keep an eye out for these events, and feel free to tell us which one you enjoyed the most. See you during Next Fest!
