We have worked on new models for the 6 playable species, here is a little preview of the Mej'it model. It's still not final, and I am currently having a discussion with the artist about the texture resolution. As you can see, the voxels on the character have a single color, while the rest of the environment is textured (at 4x the resolution).
Since I am making this game for you, I think it's best to ask the community: please let me know which style you prefer. Additionally, I am on the fence about the size of the head. It may be a little big.
Windows 7 support is ending
The next version of Cube Universe will no longer support Windows 7.
Some of the performance improvements absolutely need a CPU instruction that is officially not available in Windows 7. Since Microsoft has ended their support for Windows 7, I have decided to end it in favor of better performance.
Specifically, the next version of the game will have an option to often or always reuse RAM internally instead of returning it to the operating system. This significantly improves performance on systems with many cores, which are getting more common these days. For this to work, I need the InterlockedCompareExchange128 function, which is not officially supported on Windows 7. It may still work - it does on my old laptop - but there is no guarantee.
I am sorry for the inconvenience this may cause. But honestly, if you still use Windows 7, you should probably upgrade for security reasons alone.
Alpha 0.6.2: Into the Volcanic Depths
The new update Alpha 0.6.2 adds a new dungeon and the associated quest line.
Volcanic Depths
Deep in the jungles of the Terra planets volcanoes have formed. Inside them slumber fierce creatures. There are tales about a Spirit of Fire, an elemental that is formed out of molten rock. Geologists believe that those spirits are causing volcanoes to erupt.
Venture into the Volcanic Depths and prevent the eruption.

New Talent: Fiery Escape Whenever damage would kill you, Cauterize is triggered to prevent your death if it is not on cooldown. Cauterize cannot be used for 5 minutes after this effect occurs.

Cube Universe is back on Steam!
After almost 4 years, Cube Universe is again available on Steam. A lot has changed since. I've added procedurally generated villages, dungeons, and a lot of quests. You can now visit space stations and fight against other spaceships. Many other things have improved as well, including a better world generation, better performance, better graphics, weather, ...
I have been asked countless times if Cube Universe was on Steam since I had decided to unlist it. I have come to the conclusion that it was the wrong decision. Well, at least it gave me time to improve the game, because frankly, I have released it too early. Or maybe too late. It wasn't 2010 anymore, the hype around Early Access games had calmed down - rightfully so, given what had happened to some games and developers.
Anyway, I can't change the past. But I can change the future. I am close to being done with the programming of Cube Universe. Mods, PvP, some multiplayer improvements, and some smaller things like vehicle combat, better character models, biospheres on the lunar planets, etc. - and that's it. From there it's only adding more content. I hope to make enough money during Early Access to hire some artists and writers for that, otherwise I'll have to find another way. Worst case I'll just get a full-time job and fund those things myself.

After working more than half a year on a big new update and our website https://www.cubeuniverse.net, Cube Universe is finally available for purchase again!
If you haven't had a chance to get it on Steam, you can get it on our website for the same price*. We cannot promise that it will be available on Steam in the future but we would love to come back to Steam if they reduce their 30% fee to something competitive (17.5% or less).

Launching our new forums!
Hi!
We have just finished our new forums! They are available in multiple languages (English and German at the moment) and due to them being custom-made they offer more/different possibilities than the Steam forums, first and foremost the support for multiple languages. It's also easier to find our posts because they are highlighted.
On Steam, most people ended up using the General discussion forum because it's the one that comes up when you click on Discussions. We fixed this by adding a forum overview with all forums and their descriptions. We also added a lot more forums than on our Steam discussion board.
We will look into the Steam forums from time to time, but we highly recommend using our new forums at forums.cubeuniverse.net.
There will be some updates to the forums - a better design, notifications etc. - but not before the launch of the quest update.
