Corporate profile - Phoenix Militaries Ltd.

Often bolstering the forces of the foes of CSA is the Phoenix Militaries PMC. Heavily augmented, heavily armed and well trained, these soldiers are a significant threat to all agents.

Motto: Semper fidelis ad pecuniam

Phoenix Militaries was originally formed by veterans of the bush wars of the 60s and 70s. Composing of former regular and special forces soldiers that have lost claim to an unrecognized state, this PMC has been providing enthusiastic mercenaries, elite training and precise intelligence to the highest bidder, as well as legendarily reliable firearms and other weaponry. They were involved in all major conflicts of the late 20th and early 21st century.

Many innovative doctrines, strategies and tactics were first developed by them, before becoming mainstream in modern militaries - but by that point, Phoenix was always developing something more radical and revolutionary - this includes deploying the first unit composed of soldiers augmented with prosthetics.

Corporate profile - Watts-Rucker Bio, GmbH

Today we continue to examine the profiles of hostile corporations you will engage as part of the Deadlink protocol. Watts-Rucker represents the biotech flavor of playing god, with many questionable technologies being studied in its labs. All the more reason for you to perform your duty without much concern for collateral damage.

Motto: Wagen Sie es sich vorzustellen

The Rücker clan is a German noble family of industrialists and bankers, who founded one of the oldest (and currently the largest) pharmaceutical company in the world.

After acquiring its largest competitor, the Canadian Watts NamPac Corp, the company now focuses its attention on CRISPR-based gene splicing, creating artificial carriers of genetic information, sequencing genomes of all living organisms (and patenting them), as well as lobbying for governments to deregulate patenting of human genes. The Ruckers still control 70% of the company's shares.

Corporate profile - Tora Heavy Industries

With the latest update you've learned about CSA's newest foe - Interport. But let us not forget about your other important targets. Each is a powerful megacorp in its own right and has great power to affect the modern world. Which means your attacks on them have that power as well. Today we review the profile of Tora Heavy Industries.

A Nipponese Zaibatsu, tracing its origins back to the 19th century. What began as a humble enterprise started by a blacksmith and his sons is currently the largest megacorp conglomerate in Japan. Its products range from farming equipment (their original business, not affordable but kept alive to respect tradition) to bleeding edge consumer and military grade cybernetic enhancements (current main revenue source of the company). Their flagship products are known for their durability and unmatched power.

With deep ties to the Yakuza clan of the same name, it is often hard to distinguish between its legitimate street-level operations and criminal activities by tiger-adorned gang members. Tora Clan members run illegal chop shops in the CORE, often located in the backrooms of cybernetic gear boutiques owned by the legitimate Tora corporation, making the gang and business inseparable and leading to acceptable collateral destruction of its property.

The Tora Yakuza practically worship body modification, installing new cybernetic enhancements as a fashion statement, status symbol and a way to retain supremacy over other gangs. They prefer sheer strength and brutality over finesse. The implants are provided by Tora Heavy Industries for protection services, money laundering and help with dealing with competition.

Hotfix - March 2023

💬 Dev comment: Dear Players! Watching your struggles in the Interport biome has been fantastic and heart-wrenching at the same time. We cherish your love for the overall aesthetics of the new corporation and the joy you express from playing with the new implant leveling system. On the other hand, we feel your pain from being swarmed by tons of enemies and doing your best to overcome the difficulty spike between Watts-Rucker and Interport. We aim to deliver consistent difficulty during a run, and the current Interport state just might be overtuned.

That’s why we decided to release a balancing hotfix for the latest update. Check out the list below, and as always, let us know what you think!

General Changes

  • Hitting Pincer’s and Forcer’s C-Balls will now trigger the On C-Ball Break implants
  • Tweaked the number and composition of enemies in the Interport biome (no more Zerg Rush behavior)
  • Marked enemies will drop shields again. We tweaked the number of shields and damage threshold for the overall run experience
  • Interport got an optimization pass and should perform more consistently now

Implants Changes

  • Ballistics Calculator: Rare ➡️ Legendary
  • CBRN Pack: Active fire-rate boost leveling description fix (was "gain 0%➡️ 20% fire-rate" instead of "gain 20% fire-rate")
  • Tesla Modulator: Fixed leveling description not updating correctly
  • HE Focusware: Common ➡️ Rare
Changed Lv.4 description to better match its mechanic
  • Cluster Core: Changed Lv.4 description to better match its mechanic

Other Fixes

  • Fixed ever-lasting encounters during some Challenges
  • Fixed hit detection for radial damage
  • Fixed bugs related to Iskra boss fight (damage calculation, combat numbers display, win conditions, player getting out of bounds)

The Interport update is here!

The wait is over. Time to bust down the doors of a new corporation, agents!

In this major update you'll be able to start raiding Interport, a global e-commerce giant. Read on to find out more about Interport and the enemies that it's going to throw at you, as well as implant leveling, implant rarity, challenge rooms, balance adjustments, changes, and more!

Interport (short for Internet-Eksport, Rus. интернет-экспорт) traces its origins back to late-stage USSR, starting as a humble co-operative store in Moscow. While the original perestroikan law was written to allow worker-owned businesses, Interport was started by a crafty politburo member who wanted a financial life raft for the fall of the USSR.

With the initial injection of future oligarch money, Interport quickly privatized factories and dominated the market with cheap goods the impoverished populace could afford. The company concentrated on cutting costs, repurposing steelworks as warehouses, and relocating food production to nickel refineries, worker and consumer safety be damned. While the company established multiple supermarkets in the United States, it was their novel online business that gained them a foothold and catapulted Interport on the trajectory that it is on to this day.

Over the years, Interport became the world's go-to place for online purchases. Their operations on US soil became huge warehouses, cheaply and shoddily built to resemble the brutalist soviet factories as part of its pedigree, but with no intention of lasting longer than a few years. With such cost-reducing measures, the company has been increasing its income exponentially.

In recent years, the focus on productivity led to Interport appointing an AI as its CEO – a world first. Capable of making strategic decisions within nanoseconds, the incomprehensibly vast computer mind has introduced a requirement for all its administrative employees to upload their consciousness into its decentralized network, effectively uplifting them to a posthuman state of maximum productivity. Just like subdermal chips and mandatory thought interceptor implants before, this was met with great enthusiasm by shareholders, as workers ceded their bodies to the company. These mindless husks, augmented with industry-grade cybernetic enhancements to become “biorobots”, were sent to the factories and warehouses to replace the baseline human and robot workforce, effectively cutting costs of factory operations by 5.7%, leaving many economies in shambles.

New Corporation To Raid

Experience the perilous consequences of unchecked corporate power as you battle against Interport's ruthless biorobot workforce in these dangerous arenas. Can you survive the ultimate showdown against the world's most powerful online retailer?

Be ready to face tough challenges as you fight against the dangerous forces of the Interport Corporation on their own treacherous turf. The gameplay will test your skills and strategy like never before, but the rewards for victory are worth the risk.

New Enemy Types

Termitoid

With lightning-fast reflexes and a trusty wrench as their weapon of choice, Termitoid is a formidable opponent that will keep you on your toes.

Alatoid

With a powerful jetpack that allows for unparalleled mobility, Alatoid rains down electric bolts on unsuspecting agents from above.

Pincer

This cunning enemy is able to steal C-Balls scattered throughout the map, granting them special abilities that make them an unstoppable force.

Find new dangerous foes to conquer in the Interport area, with an exciting range of new enemies now available in the game.

New Boss Encounter

… FREE …
… from entropy."

Implants Leveling

Now rather than select a new implant each time, you’ll also get the option of leveling up any implant with an active effect. Each implant can be improved up to three times, and while the levels of your implants won’t carry over between runs, this new option will no doubt improve how much you get to customize your build. No more ending up with a pile of unused mods in your backpack!

Implants Rarity

Now that Deadlink has more implants than before, we'll be splitting them by rarity into three types. Implants will now come in Common, Rare, or Legendary rarity. It will affect the rate at which they show up on your reward screen:

  • 🟩 70% for Common
  • 🟦 25% for Rare
  • 🟨 5% for Legendary
Don’t like the colors in the UI? Think an implant’s not good enough for Legendary? Let us know, and let’s define the rarity system together.

Challenge Rooms

Yes, we know they are all challenging, but let’s talk specifically about challenge rooms. Until now, there was only one type of challenge encountered per biome. But with this update, four more unique encounters have been added – two for each of the corporations you know and bust. Challenge rooms will also contain new Elite enemies – stronger versions of loyal corporate servants you’ve encountered. They come with unique looks and a more lethal skillset to set them apart from their peers.

Be sure to report the results and impressions from your encounters!

Base Stat Changes For Combat Shells

To further emphasize the uniqueness of each class and make them even more distinct, we have changed some of the base stats for each available class.

Soldier

  • HP: 50 ➡️ 40
  • Shield: 50 ➡️ 60
  • Melee damage: 30 ➡️ 40

Hunter

  • Movement speed: 700 ➡️ 770
  • Ledge grab speed: 550 ➡️ 850

Engineer

  • HP: 50 ➡️ 70
  • Shield: 50 ➡️ 40
  • Dash cooldown: 1.55s ➡️ 1.15s
  • Pickup radius: 600 ➡️ 800
  • Grenade damage: 50 ➡️ 65

📢 Elemental Damage Modifiers v1.5

Thanks to changes to the Elemental Damage Modifiers, they should now feel more distinct from each other (and match the in-game descriptions 🙂).

🔥 Fire Damage

  • Deals extra damage to enemy HP
  • Slightly boosts damage to enemy Armor
  • Slightly boosts damage to Robotic enemies

☢️ Corrosive Damage

  • Deals extra damage to enemy Armor
  • Slightly boosts damage to enemy HP
  • Slightly boosts damage to Robotic enemies

⚡Electric Damage

  • Deals extra damage to Robotic enemies
  • Slightly boosts damage to enemy HP
  • Slightly boosts damage to enemy Armor

Elemental Damage has been adjusted so that you can still “brute force” your way through by stacking just one element.

With these changes, it is slightly less optimal to shove all Elemental Mods into your Primary Weapon than before. So choose wisely, and adapt to your surroundings!

Other Changes

  • Changed the number of combat arenas per biome for the target run-time consistency
  • 📢 The Translocator, Rappel, and ledge grab will now be considered an in-air movement
  • Removed horizontal recoil from Gauss Rifle
  • More reliable controller and Steam Deck support
  • 📢 Improved visibility of enemies’ weak spots
  • 📢 Added more customizable video settings
  • 📢 Bosses no longer see Hunter during his invisibility
  • Fixed rockets stuck in the air during the Torantula battle
  • Using Wormlink on a C-Ball will refill all ammo and grant infinite ammo for a duration
  • Added new Engineer Shell Upgrade - Surge Emitter
  • Multiple bug fixes and stability improvements

📢 Heavy Weapons

“man heavy weapon door needs to go”
-- Deadlink’s Discord Wisdom

We heard you, agents! The Heavy Weapon doors may expand variety, but you’ve been beating runs more effectively by never changing your secondary weapon. This leads to you avoiding the Heavy Weapon doors at all.

We have an idea on how to tackle this issue and will provide a solution soon.

Share your thoughts on our official Discord Server and social media. We’re keeping our eyes open and combing through your feedback! 👀

Upcoming changes & the MIX!

Big things are coming to Deadlink. You'll find out most of them this Friday, March 17th. See us at the Steam MIX Fest and look for updates! In the meantime, here's a few important changes we'll be adding to the game:

Implants Leveling

So you’ve challenged the Tora goons and you’ve stomped through the labs of Watts-Rucker. Now here you are with a bunch of unused implants in your backpack.

With Implant leveling you’ll get an extra option rather than accumulate unused implants like a scrapper.

Implants Rarity

It’s no secret that Deadlink has a lot more implants than it started out with. So many that we’re splitting them into three types of rarity! You’ll get to see what that looks like soon enough.

Challenge rooms

Challenge rooms are getting more varied and more challenging (like they should be). In our Friday update read all about what makes them tick.

Keep an eye out for our update that will contain a detailed list of the above changes and much, much more. Catch us on the MIX showcase, see the update in action in some fun streams, and of course, enjoy some discounts. See you there!

The Software Wizard update

Hello, agent. Ready to meet the Wizard?

This small update brings to you one of the big talents employed by CSA. None other than the brilliant hacker who helped put together the Engineer class shell. In fact, you’ll be seeing her in the HUB after you unlock it!

In short, here’s what’s packed into this update:

  • New NPC - Maria Argentea added to the HUB. She will appear only after unlocking the Engineer class and will have unique dialogue lines that will let you in on some interesting lore;
  • Tarball Grenade Launcher mods rework. From visual updates to usability improvements, you’ll feel the difference when using Stormblight Cascade, Fire Ant Rounds, and Locust Swarm;
  • Added inspect animation for secondary weapons. Delicious deadly eye-candy;
  • Implants library. You can now examine all implants that can be found during a run, as well as check which ones you have yet to unlock;
  • 10 new implants you can find during missions;
  • Performance improvements.

That's all in brief, but look below for all there is to know!

CSA’s newly recruited intelligence expert, a former cyberthief and hacker. Originating from South America, traces of her activities were recorded in a dozen countries, but it can only be speculated how long she has been in the business. Working as a cybersecurity specialist and blackhat for hire, she offered services to high-profile cartels, gangs and corrupt officials. Stealing sensitive data and using it for extorsion, she made herself a small fortune, most of which was spent on a full body prosthesis and an optogenetic brain interface, allowing her to connect to the net at speeds unattainable for most.

The full extent of her “achievements” is unknown due to multiple alias, MO and personality changes, but the times she stepped on the toes of the US intelligence community has proven too many. She was put on Interpol’s notice list, wanted in the States by cyberpolice. Captured 3 years ago, she was placed in complete digital isolation, facing multiple life sentences for the few crimes she could be proven to have committed.

Desperate to reconnect, she offered the US government a deal: her absolute loyalty and ongoing services for dropping her charges and a chance to start another in her long list of new lives. Aware of the possible security risk, the CIA and NSA ghosted her on the offer. Only one man was crazy or brilliant enough to take her up on the offer. Director Thomas Crusher sees her as an important piece needed for his agency’s success.

New Implants

  • 10 brand new implants available during runs

Heavy Weapon Rewards (🚧experimental🚧)

  • Players will be able to find new rewards during a run where they can change their secondary weapon with ANY other secondary weapon in the game. So you will be able to check out how the Soldier with the ARC Cannon plays or try to beat the game as an Engineer using a Rocket Launcher.
  • Weapon Mod category is still available but contains only primary weapon attachments.
💬 Dev comment: We've decided to loosen up the ties between combat shells and their arsenal by putting all secondary weapons into one category you pick during the run. This change adds more variety during a run and hopefully will create some interesting synergies that were not possible in the past.
This change, however, is experimental, and we will keep an eye on how it affects balance and overall gameplay experience. So if you have any thoughts on the new system, please let us know!

Secondary Weapon Equip Animations

Gotta Watch 'Em All!

Engineer Changes

  • 📢 "On Wormlink Use" activator will trigger implants after attaching to an enemy rather than upon the Wormlink explosion
  • 📢 Wormlink explosion now marks all enemies hit
  • 📢 Gauss Rifle base damage increased to 18 (was 15)
  • 📢 Increased Taser duration when connected to an enemy to 3 seconds (was 2 seconds)
  • Grenade Launcher's electric mod link lifetime increased to 0.7 seconds (was 0.3)
  • Added new meshes to all secondary weapon mods!

Ammunition Changes

  • Removed "Max Ammo" upgrades from the HUB progression tree
  • 📢 Changed default ammo values for all weapons:

    • Shotgun: 4 ➡️ 7
    • Rocket Launcher: 2 ➡️ 5
    • Peacekeeper: 4 ➡️ 7
    • ARC: 30 ➡️ 60
    • Gauss Rifle: 21 ➡️ 30
    • Grenade Launcher: 3 ➡️ 6
💬 Dev comment: Based on feedback we received, many new players think that the base ammo count is too low across the board. While a higher ammo count is hidden behind HUB passive upgrades, it's not necessarily compelling to unlock and grind for those. We decided to remove max ammo upgrades from HUB and increase default ammo for all weapons to create a more streamlined experience for newcomers.
"Max Ammo" HUB upgrades will be replaced with something more fun during an overhaul of the HUB upgrades system (soon).

Implants Library

  • 📢 Track how many hidden implants left to be found

Dialogues’ Changes

  • Maria will tell you some hot, fun facts about implants and tech-news
  • Members of the CSA will talk to each other about the current affairs
  • 📢 Dialogue window was reworked for clarity

Other Changes

  • 📢 First playthrough shouldn't stutter so much anymore
  • 📢 Added a "Retry" button to the run summary screen so you don't have to go back to HUB if you want to start over. Note that this button is hidden by default and you have to go to the settings screen to enable it.
  • Added confirmation prompt when changing resolution
  • Special objectives should appear more frequently
  • Voice-overs added to in-run shops
  • Multiple bug fixes

As always, please share your thoughts on our official Discord Server and social media - we read it all 👀

Our next update will introduce a new corporation with new enemies and a fresh boss fight!
