Decarnation

Release date and legendary composer

Greetings everyone,

We have some exciting news to share with you all today! We are thrilled to announce that our launch date for Decarnation has been set for May 31st! The last few weeks have been both nerve-wracking and exhilarating for us, and we can't wait for you to experience the game. :)

Additionally, we are extremely honored to have Akira Yamaoka, the renowned composer behind the iconic Silent Hill series, as part of the project. Yamaoka-san has contributed 10 tracks to the Decarnation soundtrack, staying true to his signature style of haunting melodies and chilling atmosphere. His music is the perfect complement to the game's horror theme.

The Silent Hill aesthetic and mood have played a crucial role in shaping my creative work on Decarnation. Therefore, having the opportunity to receive assistance from the talented and generous master Yamaoka-san is a tremendous honour.

Decarnation incorporates elements of Japanese culture, which makes Yamaoka-san's involvement all the more rewarding. His musical compositions are a blend of instrumental, mechanical, and organic sounds that are truly impressive. Alongside our primary composer, Corentin Brasart, we never tire of listening to Yamaoka-san's creations. Even after nearly 25 years since the first Silent Hill game, Yamaoka-san continues to reign supreme as a creative mastermind.

Thank you all for your continued support, and we hope you look forward to playing Decarnation!

[Dev Update #3] Gameplay inspirations

Greetings my dearest!

I know many of you are already excited by Decarnation’s universe and style, but there’s still a question mark around the kind of gameplay it contains

Is it a survival-horror? A Point & Click? A Visual Novel?

We call it an “adventure horror game” but how does it feel when one has the controller in their hand?

Well, what’s for sure is that there isn’t one main gameplay style in Decarnation, but more of a collection of smaller gameplay types. Rhythm games, enigmas, puzzles, stealth sequences…

For each particular situation, we tried to utilize the gameplay that would best fit the situation and the state of mind of Gloria, our main character and as a result, Decarnation is a mix of over 15 different systems and types of gameplay!

Sometimes, it’s very clear and concrete, for example when Gloria must put on the best possible performance on the Black Swan stage:

Some other times, it is a bit more abstract, and the gameplay serves to express the mental state of the hero.

The game isn’t designed to present a significant challenge per se (Decarnation is meant to be an experience, not a stressful game that relies on your response time and twitch reactions), but some sequences might strain the player’s nerves. For example in this fantasmagorical manor, where Gloria is trapped by a strange chess game. There may be some struggle in overcoming the situation, but you’ll be fine eventually, we’re sure! (Well, we hope…)

Oh, and not everything is about effort! Sometimes, it’s important to let go of the pressure, as in this little sequence of cardiac coherence. Gloria calms herself, trying to manage her anxiety and if you feel like it, you can reproduce her actionss and enjoy the benefits of a deep and slow breathing.

But this is just a sneak peak to some of Decarnation’s gameplay and systems. We don’t want to spoil everything, we’re keeping some little surprises for you, and a lot of bigger ones!

See you soon in Decarnation!

[Dev Update #2] 2023, the year of Decarnation!

Hey everyone!

Quentin here, Creative Director of Decarnation.

It's January and as tradition dictates, the team wishes you a very happy and peaceful new year. Even if the road can be perilous at times, let us keep warmth and humanity in our hearts.

This year will be a special year for us, because Decarnation will finally be released in a few months!

My early-2023 mood. Haha, jk, all is good!
Many of you have asked me for the release date and... it's coming!
We're in the home stretch, between finalizing the adventure, fixing bugs, translations, adding music, etc. More info on all of that very soon.

Some of you have been following the project for a while now, either on Steam or on Twitter. But did you know that Decarnation started, over 4 years ago, as a solo project?
Indeed, 4 years ago I left Ubisoft, with the goal of creating a small narrative game that explores themes that I have a particular interest in: the unconscious, artistic creation, symbolic violence...

One of my first drawings for the project. I was looking for the energy, the emotion of the game, prior to focusing on characters and gameplay.
That's how I started Decarnation, alone in my living room, with a drawing program and RPG Maker.
The project was supposed to last 6 months, but various meetings and opportunities decided otherwise.

Gloria's flat is one of the first elements I created. It has since evolved quite a bit, and so has Gloria!
Four years later, we are a team of 5 (+ a few more in support), with a publisher that’s backing us (Shiro Unlimited - thank you to them), and Decarnation is a much more ambitious and qualitative game than it was at the beginning.

Looking back on the journey since the project's inception is quite gratifying, but I try not to overdo it, because to get Decarnation where we all want it to be, we still have a few peaks to climb. Onward!

[Dev Update #1] Horror in Decarnation, how and why?

Hey everyone!

Quentin here, I’m the creator and game designer of Decarnation! Because it’s almost Halloween I wanted to share some thoughts on my game, more specifically, about Decarnation’s horror aspect.

We’ve all been frightened by different things during our life, whether it’s monsters, zombies, aliens, killers. Fangs, claws, knives, cleavers, grinders, chainsaws, syringes.

From Frankenstein to Resident Evil VIII, in the realm of horror, the supernatural dominates and blood flows. Nevertheless, the bizarre and strange are closer to us than it may seem, in the banality of our lives, deep in our subconscious.

Fear has no need for a glinting blade in the night to overcome us. We’re convinced that it is possible to convey horror in a different way, without the supernatural or bloodshed. That’s exactly what we’re trying to do with Decarnation!

We have all suffered from situations of injustice, the brutality of an expression, the violence of a social norm and the hurtful words of a loved one. Rare or frequent, large or small, intentional or accidental, no individual can escape this intangible violence.

And when this violence takes root in our fragile inner world, our entire wellbeing is shattered, as if we were trapped in an infernal kaleidoscope. It is this mental universe, chaotic and disrupted, lying dormant in each of us, that Decarnation allows you to explore. But where can we take refuge, how can we protect ourselves, if the monsters are inside us?

Introspective and disturbing, Decarnation delves into the human mind and we truly hope you’ll enjoy the journey.

If you want to support us, don’t hesitate to wishlist the game!
