Desktop Dungeons: Rewind

Desktop Dungeons: Rewind is now playable on Controller!

Controller support

We've been hard at work bringing Controller support to Desktop Dungeons: Rewind. Let's have a quick peek at how controller gameplay works while I prattle some marketing speech:

Navigate your way around the depths with ease using our smart targeting technology! The left stick will automatically select the most interesting tile in the direction it was pushed. This way you can zoom straight to your target, even if it's on the other side of the map. (The D-pad allows micro-adjustments for the true exploration connoisseur)

While you fight, you'll want to be using your items and Glyphs. You can go into your inventory to use items, OR you can also use the Radial Menu to sling spells and quaff potions faster than ever!

This all works on the Steam Deck as well, but we're still working towards verification.

Now isn't that fantastic. On to the next big feature...

The Codex

The Codex is back! Rejoice, revel, write about how glad you are in the Steam Discussions! All of the information you could ever need is at your fingertips. Entries are added when you find something new in a dungeon (including Dailies) or unlock a new Class / Kin.

Information about Gods is also accessible from their altar (no need to alt tab to the wiki anymore!) You'll still need to discover their likes, dislikes, and punishments through experiencing them. So you'll have your inventory deleted at least once :bleaty:

Spanish Localisation

Thanks to the amazingly attractive and intelligent members of our Discord server, Azran and Agus, Desktop Dungeons: Rewind now is now playable in Spanish. Grande! They've done a fantastic job and we are so excited to put their hard work into the game 💖 Muchas gracias!

Difficulty Modifier

Desktop Dungeons: Rewind has a reputation for being difficult, and we don't want this to be something that scares people off. We've added a modifier that should ease players into the game and allow them to experience the terror of later dungeons without sinking hundreds of hours into the game. You can find it in the Gameplay settings.

For the people who like it when the game is difficult, we've added a new feature to the Vicious Token: winning a run with the Vicious Token will raise the Difficulty Modifier by 10%. This can exceed 100%.

We're a little scared to see how far you can take this. :bleaty:

That's all we've got for you today! Enjoy the update, tell your friends, leave a review, follow us on Twitter, join our Discord, and call your grandma.

Lots of love,
- QCF Design

"Winter" is here! Get 30% off Desktop Dungeons: Rewind.

We're not lying about getting 30% off of Desktop Dungeons: Rewind. We would never do that (and we don't think Steam would let us...)

What we're lying about is that it's not really winter.

If you didn't know, QCF Design is based in South Africa. We make games here, and it's the middle of summer! Sunny days, ice-creams, braais, and beaches. Southern Hemisphere stuff at this time of year.

And we're NOT about to make winter assets when it's 28°C (83°F) outside. Because that feels silly.

So enjoy the "winter" sale, spread the love, and give the gift of Desktop Dungeons: Rewind for 30% off!

Lots of love from the sunny southern hemisphere,

Hark, Kingdom Administrators,

Ye olde Steam Awards are upon us again and we’d love your support!

The Goatperson - Exploring character classes in Desktop Dungeons: Rewind #14

“Who is the Goatperson? For the hungry, they are water. For the sick, they are a broken kettle. For the sad, they are a kick to the shin. For the poor, they are late stage capitalism. For the debtor, they are a well aimed blunt instrument to the knee.”

My time has come. Today is the day I write about
the Goatperson. The Goatperson was a sick joke for people who complained that the game was “not roguelike enough,” and a way to thank everyone who supported the game during development (we say thanks in strange ways.)

And now I’m going to “explain” how to play this beautiful abomination of a class. Here’s a GIF showing what it feels like to play Goatperson:

Abilities

🐐 Scapegoat - Randomly worships a new god per level, no conversion or desecration

🐐 Prototype - No restoration effects on level-up, gold instead of trophies

🐐 Herbivore - Eats food while exploring. Killing enemies yields more food

So let’s sum it up: you can die of starvation, have no choice in which God you worship, and don’t heal when you level up. Great.

Scapegoat is by far the strangest trait in the game. Starting a run, you’ll automatically be worshipping a God and their altar will be revealed on the map. You won’t get any piety for the initial worship, and will not gain any of the glyphs they'd usually give you. When you level up, your worship will be forcefully changed to another God. You’ll have 3 gods in total that will be switched between.

Something worth keeping in mind is that Gods can give boons that will make other Gods ruin your run. If Dracul gives you Life Steal through Blood Hunger, you better pray that Glowing Guardian isn’t in your pool. Otherwise, well, uh
 BG I guess.

Prototype hampers you immensely, forcing you to reveal tiles or quaff potions to heal up. Bye bye, well timed level ups! To somewhat make up for this, your conversion bonus is a full health and mana restore
Except it costs 100 conversion points which increases by 10 every time you use it. Oh, did I mention that it doesn’t cure mana burn and poison like levelling up does? Yeah, you’ll need potions or a divine intervention to help you with that.

Herbivore is just here to make your life even more difficult. Whenever you reveal a new tile, you’ll heal up as per usual and eat one goat food. However, if you don’t have goat food you’ll take damage and drain mana instead. You start with 90 goat food, and gain 9 every time you kill an experience-valuable monster. This means using Imawal is usually a bad idea because you’re petrifying your food.

“Eating rocks is not recommended.”
- local health care professional.

Prayers for the Goatperson

When playing the goat person, there are only 2 things you can do: play as well as you can, and pray. Here are some prayers I would recommend:

đŸ”Ș Taurog, grant me the strength and fortitude to slay my foes, for I am meagre.

✹ Mystera, provide me magic, for Burndayraz was in the corner of the map.

đŸŒČ Earthmother, forgive me for consuming monsters, for I am hungry. Bah.

💾 Tikki, thank you for accepting cash, for I have nothing else to offer.

👀 Jehora, please don’t randomly poison or mana burn me, for I have no potions left.

📜 Glowing Guardian, bestow on me your Prayer Beads to restore my faith, for I have no hope.

đŸ©ž Dracul, I beg that you are by my side when fighting the boss, for I am weak.

đŸ€ Pactmaker, give me a slight edge in this dungeon, for I am a pillow in a sword fight.

🗿 Binlor, I am a mere pebble, give me the resistance to least be a small rock. Please.

(Thanks to Eable on our Discord for the ideas!)

Glyphs

🐐 Wonafyt - The Goatperson’s food delivery service of choice! Wonafyt teleports an enemy next to the player and slows them. It first teleports monsters that are the same level as the player, and then will teleport lower levels when there are none. Use this to make sure you don’t starveℱ.

🐐 Pisorf - How do you b(l)eat two bosses at once? You headbutt them into each other! If you can line them up, use this glyph to damage both bosses at once while converting your other items for refills on your health and mana.

🐐 Burndayraz - As you might have guessed by this point, the Goatperson is more parts prey than predator. You’d also be a lot more scared of your prey if they could throw fireballs at you. While you have no bonus to damage like other classes, Burndayraz scales linearly with your level and is almost always useful. It’s worth preparing Flame Magnet to make sure you can get through the first couple levels.

One other very useful glyph is Bludtupowa. Bludtopowa costs health to use, reveals tiles, and restores mana. The great thing is that it reveals 3 tiles but only costs one food. This why you can peak into the fog while saving your snacks for later. As per usual, using what you find is important. Getindare will eventually save you from getting hit and therefore save food, Halpmeh can help with using your tiles efficiently, and Weytwut can get you out of tight spots.

The Goatperson actually has some awesome lore behind them, and existed before any other Kin! If you join our Discord and ask, we have a local lore fanatic who'll gladly tell you about it ːbleatyː

Otherwise, that's all we have for today! Here are some chilled goats to make your day.

The Transmuter - Exploring character classes in Desktop Dungeons: Rewind #13

“Transmuters are members of the ancient and powerful Order of Change. Their mastery of inner force is a complete mystery to other magic users: they channel their power through glyphs, yet seem to do so without any techniques outlined in the Standard Magical Primer.”

Greetings Administrator, and welcome back to another class post! Today we’ll be giving you the basics on how to play the Transmuter.

Abilities

🌟 Dungeons Lore - Starts with a Lemmisi glyph

🌟 Inner Focus - Using glyphs gives free conversion points

🌟 Spirit Sword - Hitting the conversion threshold adds temporary damage based on max mana

Before explaining the Transmuter’s abilities, let's lay some groundwork. Conversion is the ability of all adventurers to turn items and glyphs into power. This power depends on their Kin. When converted, an item will give you a number of Conversion Points specified in its description. Once your Conversion Points reach your conversion threshold, you’ll gain the bonus and start working towards the next threshold.

Transmuters are the masters of conversion. Inner Focus provides you with conversion points equal to your mana spent whenever you cast a glyph, and Spirit Sword gives a massive spike in damage when you hit a conversion threshold! This makes Transmuters an excellent choice in long dungeons where you’re bound to cast plenty of glyphs and convert plenty of items.

The base damage given by Spirit Sword is equal to your maximum mana. This means that finding sources of bonus damage through your Kin, items, or glyphs can go a long way in making you stronger. Much like the Sorcerer, you’ll have a very diverse damage profile, which can make finding fightable enemies a lot easier.

Kin Choices

🌟 Human - Humans gain 10% bonus damage when they reach a conversion threshold. Along with having the best scaling power, this synergises well with Spirit Sword! Human Transmuters can deal truly monstrous damage, and will shine later in a run.

🌟 Elf - Elves gain one maximum mana when they reach their conversion threshold. This obviously synergises with Spirit Sword to give you more damage, but there’s something even better
You have the lowest conversion threshold in the game. You’ll deal more damage, more often, and receive a permanent increase to your mana.

🌟 Dwarf - Dwarves gain +10 max HP per 80 conversion points. This is another cheap threshold, and can lead to a Dwarf Transmuter becoming incredibly tanky. In Desktop Dungeons, the amount of damage you can deal is effectively how much health you can afford to trade without dying. More health, more effective damage. Dwarves become powerful faster than Elves and Humans, but don't scale when enemies start dealing lots of damage.

You’ll be reaching conversion thresholds often as a Transmuter, and so your Kin choice makes more of a difference than most other classes. Below is a table showing each Kin’s conversion bonus and how many conversion points are needed for a threshold. Happy theory crafting!

Gods

🌟 Jehora Jeheyu - The God of Madness appears again. What is change if not Chaos? Transmuters gain their power from casting spells, which Jehora will reward with Piety. Boost Mana will increase your maximum mana and make your Spirit Sword stronger. If you can save enough piety to become the Chaos Avatar, you’ll be rewarded with 100 Conversion Points, a level-up, and a cure for your ailments.

🌟 Mystera Annur - Change is made in a struggle for growth. Jehora and Mystera are two sides of the same coin: Mystera rewards you for casting spells, and can boost your maximum mana through Magic. They also offer mana refills for converting glyphs with Refreshment, and Flames can be picked up if you plan to go full fireball.

🌟 Glowing Guardian - Conversion returns you to order. Humility lowers your level by one without affecting your health or damage, which makes your Spirit Sword damage spikes effective at catapulting you to higher levels. Glowing Guardian will also reward you for converting items. This piety can be used to reach Enlightenment for a boost to maximum mana, damage, health, and conversion points.

Most Gods are useful for the Transmuter. Tikki Tooki is helpful because you aren’t a regen fighter and they give you a free Getindare glyph. With Binlor, you can farm piety and conversion points simultaneously with Endiswal. Knockback damage also has synergy with Spirit Sword!

Glyphs

🌟 Bysseps - Spirit Sword gives you base damage for one attack, and Bysseps give you bonus damage for one attack. If you want to power up your swing as much as possible, this is the biggest it’s going to get! This combo is great for taking down higher level enemies to get you some bonus experience.

🌟 Getindare - As much as we like to believe whoever you’re spiking on will die instantly, sometimes they won’t. Using Getindare in these moments for an extra attack that converts their existence into
Non-existence. If you're feeling fancy, plan ahead and have the conversion points gained from Inner Focus push you over the threshold in the middle of combat!

🌟 Lemmisi - What this Glyph lacks in combat power, it makes up for in utility. Lemmisi reveals 3 random tiles, and the revealed tiles count towards your regeneration. You’ll heal for three tiles of health and one mana. It also has the special property of prioritising helpful tiles. Using it as a substitute for exploring to heal can help to reveal useful glyphs, hidden subdungeons, boosters, and God Altars. It will also give you conversion points through Inner Focus!

That's all for this post. Remember to be kind, and give your parents a call!

The Rogue - Exploring character classes in Desktop Dungeons: Rewind #12

"Rogues are mavericks with a touch of class. Although they inhabit the greyer areas of society, they put themselves above "common" criminals and hone their skills in preparation for all sorts of glory-seeking exploits. Their grace and poise in battle is unmatched. Their durability, unfortunately, is not."

Welcome back to another Class Post! Sneaking into the fray, today we'll be talking about the Rogue: the epitome of being able to dish it out but not being able to take it. They're a straightforward and versatile class that works around reduced health and quick hits.

Abilities

đŸ”Ș Dangerous - -5 health per level, but start off with +40% damage

đŸ”Ș Dexterous - Permanent First Strike buff

đŸ”Ș Evasive - Starts with 20% Dodge

Dangerous is the Rogue’s Defining trait, turning them into the glassiest cannon of Desktop Dungeons: Rewind. +40% base damage is an unrivalled boost to damage, but they gain health at half the rate of a normal class. This health penalty is sometimes offset by their amazing dexterity.

Dexterous and Evasive can put you up by two hits in a fight: one because you might Dodge their hit, and a second because you have First Strike. This means that you have 2 more attacks worth of effective HP! There are two risks to this though: your dodge chance is only 20% which needs to be maximised by taking more hits, and enemies with First Strike will still hit you first! These can be manoeuvred around, which we’ll get into later.

Kin choices

đŸ”Ș Orc - Leaning into the full glass cannon, Orc Rogues can have truly massive amounts of damage. Their Conversion bonus grants them +2 base damage, which turns into a lot of damage after the Rogue’s 40% damage multiplier. Downside is
You’ll need health from somewhere otherwise you will likely die if you don’t kill your target in one or two hits. You can find this health in items or Deities.

đŸ”Ș Dwarf - Taking the safer route, Dwarves get 10 HP from their Conversion bonus. This allows them to survive up to two to three hits, increasing the chance of a dodge and still being up an attack from First Strike. You’ll have to find items to boost your base damage to get the most out of Dangerous though.

đŸ”Ș Goblin - Orcs and Dwarves are far and away the best Rogues
But an unconventional yet effective choice is the Goblin. Goblins gain experience from their Conversion bonus, and levelling up gives the player +5 base damage. This makes the Rogue’s multiplier more valuable, and on top of that, levelling will fully heal you. Combine this with a Cydtsepp, and watch as the boss takes five massive hits in a row! Who doesn't want to stab people with a pencil?

Glyphs

đŸ”Ș Cydstepp - Death Protection is amazing on Rogues as it guarantees you'll be able to take one last hit
And with Rogues, every hit counts. Not only this, but it can be cast before a fight ("precasted") which allows you to regenerate your mana before you fully engage. Combine this with any other combat focused Glyph and you’ll have a killer time!

đŸ”Ș Apheelsik - With its fairly low cost and ability to stop enemies from regenerating, you can use this Glyph to sneak in another attack without perishing like milk in a Vegan’s fridge. It’s a little worse than Cydstepp because it doesn’t last long on higher level enemies and isn’t precastable, but still a great pickup.

đŸ”Ș Weytwut - Weytwut inflicts the Slowed status effect. When slowing an enemy, you’ll get 1 additional experience for killing them and temporarily remove their First Strike. Goblins and Gorgons are squishy but have First Strike and lots of damage
Completely negating your First Strike and taking advantage of your reduced HP. Pull out Weytwut to turn the tables in your favour!

All of these Glyphs help you to get an extra attack in one way or another. Other Glyphs that help with this are Endiswal for the physical resistances or Halpmeh for some healing. Burndayraz can also serve as a finisher or to mitigate some regeneration!

We’ve talked about Glyphs before Gods in this post because the Glyphs you’re using will likely change based on who you’re worshipping.

Gods

đŸ”Ș Tikki Tooki - The main downside of Tikki is that they punish you when you get hit a lot. Well guess what, you can’t get hit a lot anyways! Using Reflexes, you can have dodge prediction from the Quicksilver Potion, and get two attacks in one swing from the Reflex Potion. Dodging can further increase your dodge chance and Tikki rewards you for dodging attacks. Just be careful about using Cydstepp, as you’ll be punished for triggering a Death Protection. That will likely end your run. Use Weytwut and Apheelsik instead to get some free piety!

đŸ”Ș Glowing Guardian - Glowing Guardian synergises well with the Rogue on many fronts. Absolution gives you a beneficial health increase, and the downside of Humility lowering your regen doesn’t matter as much because of your low health maximum. Cleansing can turn your massive physical attack into a magical one, and Health Potions weren’t doing too much for us anyways so it doesn't feel bad to convert them. Just make sure to not use Apheelsik, as you’ll be heavily punished. Try Cydstepp or Weytwut instead!

đŸ”Ș Jehora Jeheyu - The god of Primordial Chaos appears again! Boost Health is great for the Rogue, as well as giving you a free Weytwut glyph when you begin worshipping them. Just make sure you have a plan to deal with the small punishments, as a level or two of Weakened can make your run a lot harder. Reaching Chaos Avatar is always a noteworthy spike

Unlike with Kin, Rogues can make great use of many different Deities. Earthmother gives health with Vine Form and slows enemies with Entanglement, Binlor can help you build up some resistances, and Taurog can be dipped into early for armour and Skullpicker before converting out. Even Mystera can give you some bonus mana and lower the cost of useful spells!

That’s the entire pantheon, so keep an eye out for cheeky conversions and play around the Glyphs that you find.

Rogues can tackle the hardest Dungeons your Desktop has to offer and now you know the basics of how to play them!
