Desolatium

Dev Log – February

Greetings Cultists!

Here is our monthly update to provide you with inside information on what has been happening in the development of Desolatium.

February has been short but intense! So many new cultists here from The Big Adventure Event and Steam Next Event, so we want to thank you for your interest in Desolatium and bring you closer to its development.

After all of your feedback, we decided to update the demo with things you suggested, so this month we continued with the development of next chapters, but also we’ve been fixing all the bugs and adding some features to the demo.

So here are the main things to highlight from February:

Design:

- Designed the missing graphic material from chapter 6: pointers, hovers, and some objects. Chapter 6 is now ready!
- Finished all the graphic material of the dialogues in chapter 7: texts, face images, titles...

- Created and designed more different posters for the beginning of each chapter.

3D Characters:

- One of the things that took us the longest this month, was the character rendering: hours and hours to finally have the characters ready to implement them in the different scenes in the game. Here is our barman! From concept art to final 3D model.

- We have retouched the animation of some characters in blender.
- Created the video, the mask and then integrated it in the scene.

Puzzles:

- Edited some widgets of the puzzles with buttons.
- Created the detail view image from some puzzles.

Sound:

- Prepared and integrated sounds from chapter 6 and 7.

Demo bugs and features:

- Fixed some transitions between screens
- Added some sounds (such as steps or door sounds) and replaced others.
- Better integrated notes on the scene
- Fixed some sounds and voices: now you can adjuste the volumen!

Here is our monthly update to provide you with inside information on what has been happening in the development of Desolatium!

January has been a crazy month! We’ve been a part of The Big Adventure Event and many streamers and people played and tested the demo. They have given us a lot of feedback to implement in the development in order to improve the experience, so we have focused on that.

- Also some of the 3D objects from chapter 6 have been made, meet this Dagon!

- Color grading all chapter 6 images.

- Mask men is finally ready! Here is the concept art vs 3D.

PROLOGUE UPDATE - The wait is coming to an end!

Dear cultists!

The Prologue is almost out! We're so grateful to all of you for believing in this project and our team; we're so excited to finally share our hard work with you, we want to give you the best experience possible and make the wait for the final game more enjoyable.

During this time, we have been shooting in different locations in Spain such as Atienza (Guadalajara) or Yecla (Murcia); once the 360 photos and videos were ready, we edited them until they fit perfectly in Desolatium’s environment.

We have also created a new inventory, new enemies, designs, puzzles and new characters. Do you already know about Samara? Check our previous update!

However, we’ve been through some challenges during the development that have made the process longer than expected, especially at the technical level. Actually, we had to develop our own methods when implementing certain mechanics in the game and moving them to technical development in the UE4.

On the other hand, coordinating and planning a development like this has been another challenge since there are many variables to take into account! Also the "artistic" component of the development adds an extra difficulty to that planning.

Despite all the obstacles, we have worked very carefully all the details around Desolatium development and design so you can immerse totally in the adventure, and it is coming really soon

In a few days you, as a backer, will be able to play it totally free. It will be a short game, but a big experience.

We look forward to hearing all your thoughts about the Prologue when it's out. You can reach us on social media here:

PROLOGUE UPDATE

"...for they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them together for the war of the great day of God, the Old one."

Revelation 16:14

Hi cultists! We have a great announcement for you. We know that is a long wait until the game is released so we thought about rewarding your support in some way.

We are working in a prologue of Desolatium so you can start to feel the lore and story of the game. In early April we will release a short game totally free for you. The prologue will be free for backers.

SYNOPSIS

More than a thousand years ago a milestone occurred in the history of mankind, but we have decided to forget about it and create a new truth.

A young woman loses her son and goes into the desert, praying to her God, But who or what answers her call is something else, a very ancient being, Primal, the closest thing to a creator that exists in this world.

Accompany her in her search for the truth, traveling beyond space and time, and discover what her destiny is.

History is written by the victors.

WHAT’S NEW?

Inventory: You will be able to combine objects in order to create new ones.
Dialogue: From now on, you will have the possibility to talk with other characters.
Cinematic scene: Made using motion graphics.
Design: New designs for the game interface that will immerse you even more in the adventure.
New enemies with new animations.
Puzzles: more complex riddles you will have to solve.
Lore: Many more references, both to the universe created by Lovecraft and to other horror classics.
Music and effects: The experience will be improved thanks to the great Xabi San Martín, who has created new melodies for this prologue.

MAIN CHARACTER: SAMARA

Samara is a young woman who lived in Bethlehem during Herod's reign. Her life passes peacefully with her new-born baby, completely unaware of the presence of a prodigious power being, who has haunted the earth for centuries. When Herod gives the order to his soldiers to start the famous "Massacre of the Innocents", Samara decides to flee to save her son’s life. Unfortunately, Herod's soldiers find her and destroy the child, leaving her totally desolate, wandering through the desert. Then, the creature, from the darkness, claims his presence. This is when Samara's true journey begins, she will do anything to get her baby back and get her revenge. To do this, he will put aside his religious beliefs and embrace a darkness that will test the purity of his own soul.

We have been told that God sent his son to the world to save us. But, history has hidden a very different truth, and in Desolatium: Prologue we are about to discover it.

We hope this news will lead you to a complete Desolatium experience; but we won’t tell you everything now, you will discover all the details very soon.

See you in Carcossa!

Spooky news for Halloween

Everything was completely silent and there was not a soul in sight, not even the wind dared to blow across that part of the city. Trash piled up in the corners, but no rats or other kinds of vermin could be seen. Only a putrid smell remained in those streets.
When she reached her destination, she saw some dim lights at the entrance of the building. They were pumpkins, arranged on both sides of the entrance; inside of each of them the dancing flames of two little candles. Just as she passed between them, a lonely gust of icy wind gave her goosebumps and a sudden itch on the back of his neck made her turn. The carved face of one of those pumpkins was looking at her and ...

New look, new demo, new features and more

Greetings Cultist!

We are already on Halloween, a somewhat strange one, but for that same reason we don’t want to miss the spooky vibe. We have news for you… Desolatium has undergone a small (or big?) makeover, and we want you to be the first to see it and give us your opinion!

A new addition to the team has brought a lot of new ideas that we have loved, and hopefully you will too. The new look is a bit more ... cthulhean. We wanted to give Desolatium a bit of that pulp air that accompanied Loveraft's works, integrating rituals, mystery and terror. Judge by yourselves and tell us what you think. On the other hand, on the 31st we will release a new version of the demo with some improvements. It will be a special Halloween version, with new implementations and the already mentioned makeover. It will be short, but we want you to get an idea of how the game is progressing.

And finally, since we are on Halloween, what could be better than some dark movie recommendations? Here you have some: "Underwater" (2020), a movie that would be just “fine” if it were not for its ending. We will only tell you that it is worth seeing what lurks in the depths... "The Mark of the Demon" (2020), we weren’t sure about this recommendation, but the Necronomicon is in it and anything that smells of Lovecraftian mythos must be seen. Even so, we warn you that it is not... well, see for yourselves. And finally “The Endless” (2017), a highly recommended film about two brothers who return to a sect many years after escaping from it, upon receiving a tape from their former brothers.

"Let his praises be sung and abundance remembered to the Black Goat of the Forests, Iä! Shub-Niggurath! The Black Goat of the Forests of ten thousand offspring!"
