Important Dune: Awakening Update

Dear Sleepers,

These are exciting times, we’re closing in on launch, and we’ve just initiated a major preview beta where hundreds of journalists and content creators are playing the early parts of the game and will be releasing their coverage on April 25th.

These past few weeks we’ve been steadily gearing up, releasing the Character Creator & Benchmark Mode back in February, starting pre-orders in March, and continuing to release new livestreams, videos, and details to keep you informed.

We want to thank everyone who has shared in our excitement. It’s been a joy reading all your comments across the various community channels.

Our ongoing Persistent Closed Beta is also continuing in full force, with regular updates, and the feedback we’ve been collecting from beta testers has been invaluable in making sure we can launch a quality game. We have a very active Discord going with our beta testers where our developers can interact directly with them to ensure we collaboratively make Dune: Awakening a better game.

Thanks to this process, we’ve concluded that with a bit more time to cook, we can act on a lot more of the feedback we know is important to our beta testers.

As such, we will be moving the release date of Dune: Awakening to June 10th, with head start launching on June 5th. This is not a decision we take lightly, we know everyone is very excited to get playing, but these three extra weeks will give us the time needed to make improvements that will lead to a better gameplay experience from day one.

We’re also excited about the fact that this will allow us to do a large-scale beta weekend next month where even more of you will get the opportunity to play the game and share your feedback. We will release more information about this soon.

Dune: Awakening is a beast of a game. This is multiplayer survival on a massive scale, and we’re making gameplay and technical strides not seen in the genre before. We want to make sure we stick the landing.

Also, don’t forget to tune into today’s livestream on Steam, YouTube, and Twitch, where our developers will be showing and talking more about the combat in Dune: Awakening.

With best regards from the entire Dune: Awakening team here at Funcom

Communinet Signal #7

As the saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers”. But the “showers” are actually “sandstorms” and the “flowers” are actually “a sandy death”….or something like that. Anyway, the launch for PC is quickly approaching, so it’s a good thing you’re here to read up and prepare yourself! Not to mention that pre-orders are live on Steam right now along with different editions of the game we are offering.

There were numerous reveals and updates in the last couple of weeks and this issue will make sure you don’t miss a thing in our round ups section below. We are also showcasing some amazing concept art of the Saudaukar dropship you’ll encounter in the game, answer questions from the community, and show off some great fanart.

If you missed any previous Signals, you can take a look here:

Pre-ordering

If you’re looking for one good reason to pre-order, let us introduce you to the smallest and most adorable creature on Arrakis (besides you).

By pre-ordering any edition of the game, you could have this little guy in your base, waiting for you to come home every day with beady eyes that say, “please don’t drink me”.

Our Deluxe and Ultimate editions also come with even more additions, so much sure to check out our latest blog post that details everything that comes with them.

We also announced our business model and post-launch plans so you can make an informed decision to buying Dune: Awakening (if the Maud’Dib wasn’t enough to convince you). You can find all details on this, as well as system requirements in our article here.

Exploring Arrakis

Though Arrakis is hot, dangerous, and sandy, it’s still very much beautiful and holds many secrets. Take a look at our narrated video, Exploring Arrakis, that gives you a peek into what challenges you will face to uncover what the sands have hidden and how to overcome them.

New Screenshots

Imperial Testing Stations all over Arrakis hold echoes of the past and a valuable technology. Equip your best weapons and abilities and fight your way to learn unique blueprints and recover resources. Whether you’re in for a contract or a haul, beware: trouble is around each corner.

The Shield Wall is a proving ground for experienced explorers of Arrakis. Its rugged terrain demands a reliable ornithopter or groundcar, but provides valuable resources in exchange. With a harsher climate and enemies, you'll want to be properly prepared.

The Sounds of Arrakis

If you like what you see so far, then you’ll love what you hear. Knut Avenstroup Haugen returned after having worked on Conan Exiles to create the soundtrack for Dune: Awakening, and is joined by Audio Director, Arild Iversen. From classical orchestration to experimental synths, it's a harmonious blend to capture the essence of Arrakis.

In this behind-the-scenes look, they discuss their musical journey and how sound design is so incredibly important in this game.

Live Stream

And of course, we’d be remiss not to mention our very first Dune: Awakening live stream, packed with two hours of information, interviews, gameplay, and Q&A. Hosted by our Senior PR Manager, Natascha, various developers from Funcom talked about their work in the game.

We began with a live gameplay segment where our World Director, Jeff, and Expert Environmental Artist, Øyvind, walked us through various parts of the game you’ll experience. This includes finding a trade post, sandstorm, flying an ornithopter, combat, exploring a shipwreck (community voted!), and more.

We were then visited by Knut Haugen and Arild in the flesh to talk more about their creative process in making sounds and music for Dune: Awakening.

Lastly, we touched on the business model and Q&A with lead producer, Ole Andreas. Among other topics, our team confirmed that you can pet sandworms… from the inside. For more insights such as this and on topics that are you have probably been more curious about, make sure to watch the stream and stay tuned for more of them in the future!

Many adversaries will be a danger to you on Arrakis, most of them bandits and scavangers in their camps and invaded buildings. But at night, a much more lethal threat will be out, actively hunting you: The Emperor’s Sardaukar.

Starting from the age of 6, the Sardaukar are trained in all manner of martial skills as they grow up in a system designed to promote the most skilled and ferocious; the mere mention of their name is often enough to ensure submission.

As they serve the emperor himself, you’ll spot them in the sky surveying and scanning the land below on his orders. Traveling at night will keep the sun off your back, but you’ll still want to keep an eye on their patrols. Here we are showcasing some beautiful concept and 3D art of the Sardaukar drop ship; equipped with high powered spotlights, you won’t want to be detected unless you’re looking for a fight.

If found, they’ll release an anti-gravity field that holds you in place and keeps you from running before sending down the Sardaukar troops onto your position.

Concept art is by Kemp Remillard, and the 3D art is by André Sterzenbach.

Final version of the ship found in game is subject to change.

We have a fresh batch of community made fan work that we always love seeing and sharing! Whether it’s physical or digital media, paper or mixed elements, we want it all. These featured here will have a shiny invitation to the Dune: Awakening Closed Beta!

Make sure to you share yours with us in the #fanart channel of the official Dune: Awakening Discord server, or use the #CommuninetSignal tag on social media.

Yes! You’ll be able to review and edit your character after it’s imported if you made them through the character creator on Steam.

Vehicle permissions aren’t tied to guilds. These are personal settings that you can adjust.

You can add 5 horizontal and 5 vertical extensions. To extend a fief you need "staking units". These can only be applied to advanced subfief consoles.

Yes. We have fall off, custom recoil patterns per weapon, accuracy, magazine size, reload speed, custom camera shakes and all that to match the accuracy and recoil, shield damage, stagger/poise damage, slowing effects, holster/unholster speeds, move speed while firing, weapon drag/rotation modifiers, and fun stuff like that.

Yes we have both swatches (which is color variations) and variants (take the appearance of another outfit).

We plan to clearly telegraph what known issues are present in the live version of the game to minimize impact they might have on the player experience. Whether that will take shape of a board, list, or be hosted on a specialized platform, that is something we are actively investigating and testing along the closed beta tests.

There was a lot to go through the last month, but we hope that answered a lot of questions you might have had after our launch date reveal. We know that you may have more, so don’t be afraid to join the Dune: Awakening official Discord server where you can ask and be answered in the next Signal!

We have exciting things planned to go out in the coming month, so keep your eyes peeled on our socials, Discord, and official website for news. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a small Muad’dib to tend to…

The Classic 90's music from Dune and Dune II games is coming to Dune: Awakening!

Greetings Sleepers,

There is no school like the old school, and it doesn’t get much more old school than the soundtracks from the Dune and Dune II video games from 1992.

You can listen to them on the in-game radio while playing Dune: Awakening. The Dune II: Battle for Arrakis soundtrack was composed by Frank Klepacki. Philippe Ulrich and Stéphane Picq composed the Dune: Spice Opera soundtrack and it was remastered in 2024. Unfortunately, Stéphane Picq just passed away in February 2025.

The in-game centralized communications network, called the Communinet, offers three channels to choose from alongside broadcasts about emergencies, sandstorms or the Landsraad.

Looking for something extra while gathering resources or building your base? Tune in to Harvester Radio, the station for spice miners and the commoner workforce, broadcasting ads, survival tips, music and entertainment.

Want to check out what is going on with the Harkonnen or Atreides? Listen to their official stations, broadcasting propaganda, slave fight coverage and motivational speeches.

“Dune has a legacy in books and films – but also in video games.” Says Chief Creative Officer Joel Bylos. “The soundtracks of Dune and Dune II were some of the greatest of the 90’s and it is a great honor to be able to share them with a new generation of players through the Communinet in Dune: Awakening.”

The in-game radio does not only offer entertainment, but also a deeper understanding of living on Arrakis. It is the most dangerous planet in the universe, but if you manage to survive you may want to dive into its rich cultures and endless conflicts.

One of the things you can enjoy on the radio stations is a full multi-episode radio play, and on the 8th of April we will share the first episode of Five Days at Carthag with you, a radio theatre and an Arrakeen Playhouse production.

We also hope that you will want to tune in to the rest of the story when playing Dune: Awakening and discover the official truth of what happened to the Harkonnen stronghold of Carthag.

Until next time, Sleepers.

We’ve prepared a video bringing you on a journey behind the scenes of the making of the soundtrack, giving you a unique glimpse at how the music was brought to life with a live orchestra at the legendary AIR Lyndhurst studio in London.

The digital album will also be available on streaming services, published by Milan Records, a Sony Music label.

Discovering and Mapping Arrakis - Exploration in Dune: Awakening

Greetings Sleepers,

Dune: Awakening, inspired by Frank Herbert’s legendary sci-fi novel and Legendary Entertainment’s award-winning films, is a multiplayer survival game where the vast, open, and ever-changing world is designed to keep you engaged in exploration, making maps, and hunting for rare resources and valuable technology.

Arrakis is the most dangerous planet in the universe, but if you can master its numerous hazards, a world of great beauty and immeasurable wealth lies ready for you to explore.

Check out the new Exploring Arrakis - Secrets of the Desert video, showing exploration in Dune: Awakening.

Arrakis is by no means just a sea of sand. The landscape varies greatly, from the towering peaks of Jabal Eifrit, to the iron-rich and red-colored Vermillius Gap, the irradiated Sheol, the imposing Shield Wall, and the sheltered O’odham, where sparse vegetation clings to life. Along with large player hubs like Arrakeen and Harko Village, these are only some of the places you’ll explore. Beyond the Shield Wall lies the Deep Desert, a vast expanse full of priceless treasure and constant danger.

Learn to Survive

Your beginnings on Arrakis will be dominated by blistering heat, scarcity of water, treacherous quicksand, punishing sandstorms, and the constant tension when stepping on open sand, where the great sandworms roam. The shade and the night will be your closest friends as you harvest dew from sparse and gnarled shrubs, and try to avoid sunstroke.

To truly master Arrakis you must follow in the footsteps of the Fremen. Their teachings will help you make many of the tools needed for survival. Learning to craft your own stillsuit is the first major step towards staving off dehydration, and ultimately, thriving in the hostile environment.

Travel Across the Vast World

Build your own shelter from the sun and sandstorms, and use it as a base of operations from which to explore the massive world. To traverse Arrakis you can run, climb, use suspensor belts to levitate, use abilities like the shigawire claw as a grappling hook, and more.

But to truly open your horizons you need to craft your own vehicles, like the sandbike, buggy, and ornithopter. To attempt to outrun the mighty Shai-Hulud on foot is to welcome a quick death.

You can install various different modules on every vehicle to expand its capabilities. Equip your sandbike or ornithopter with a scanner to reveal valuable resources like minerals, harvestable rocks, and water you need for crafting and survival.

Do you want to hunt for buried treasure? Venturing out to the dunes after a sandstorm has passed can be very lucrative. Use your scanner to uncover buried debris and dig it out with a sand compactor. Valuable loot can be found this way, but you should never tarry too long on the open sand, as sandworms will always emerge from the deeps to silence any rhythmic vibrations you cause.

The Art of Map-Making

The best way to reveal the map is by finding a very high vantage point and launching a survey probe into the sky. The probe scans a section of the map and reveals important locations, as well as the terrain.

If you have trained with a Planetologist and have learned the Cartographer skill, you can even create maps, called Sinkcharts, of the regions you have uncovered. These maps can then be given to your friends or even sold to other players on the Exchange in Arrakeen or Harko Village.

The most valuable Sinkcharts are made in the Deep Desert. The world of Dune: Awakening consists of several regions that you can travel between on the Overland Map. You start your journey in Hagga Basin (which is made up of several seamless regions) and you can travel into the Deep Desert once you have an ornithopter.

The Ever-Changing World

A constant source of danger on Arrakis is the Coriolis storm. This massive sandstorm sweeps across the planet and changes the landscape, covering old resources and revealing new ones.

The most dramatic changes occur in the Deep Desert, a vast expanse of open sand nine times larger than Hagga Basin. Not only are new resources uncovered by the shifting sands, but important Imperial Testing Stations are also revealed. These contain the highest-value unique technology and loot.

Because the Coriolis storms change the Deep Desert map on a weekly basis, new Sinkcharts that pinpoint valuable locations will be useful for those who wish to search for unique schematics, hunt for spice, or battle for control of the Landsraad. The ever-changing nature of the Deep Desert ensures infinite exploration and discovery is tied to valuable rewards.

Forward operating bases can be built in the Deep Desert to establish a foothold from which to gather materials and explore further. The blueprint system is invaluable to quickly set up bases like this, as it allows you to save an entire build and place it anywhere, using Solido projections as a guide. But always remember to get your resources to safety ahead of the Coriolis storm hitting, as it will reduce any structure to dust.

The Deep Desert must always be explored with caution. Other players may lie in ambush or try to hunt you down should they spot you. It can be wise to equip a boost module to your ornithopter unless you want to fight your way out of a trap instead of fleeing from it.

In the Deep Desert, your ornithopter is your only lifeline. Should it become damaged out among the dunes, you must either repair it or call for rescue by another ‘thopter, for Shai-Hulud roams in the deeps and will emerge should he sense footsteps or vibrations from other vehicles.

This has been a short guide to some of what you can explore in Dune: Awakening, but there is much more for you to experience yourself at launch, on May 20. Until then, breathe in the majesty and diversity of Dune in the Beauty of Arrakis video.

Until next time, Sleepers.

Communinet Signal #6

This has been an extremely exciting month, to say the least! No more speculation or wonder, we have a release date! That’s right, Dune: Awakening is coming to a PC near you on May 20th, 2025. We are so excited to finally show off what we’ve been working on! You have until then to check out the character creator on Steam, test your hardware in the Benchmark Mode, and of course practice your water discipline.

The release date isn’t the only thing to be excited about though; we have all sorts of other announcements and reveals that we’ll go over in our roundup to make sure you didn’t miss a thing. In this issue we are also highlighting the carrier ornithopter, showing off beautiful art from the community, and answering some of your burning questions.

Get a head start in your journey to Arrakis by figuring out one of life’s most important questions: Who are you? Were you born in the tundras of Ix? Or the valleys of Chusuk? What about your mentor, who taught you the ways of being a Swordmaster or Bene Gesserit?

You can decide these for yourself now by downloading the character creator on Steam! Besides your background, you can also adjust the physical appearance of your ideal character. If you need some inspiration, here’s a couple Sleepers shared in our official Discord!

And if you need even MORE inspiration, you’ll get a redeemable code for the exclusive Frameblade knife skin by completing your character. You can use this code when the game launches on May 20th. By downloading the Character Creator, you’ll also have access to the Benchmark Mode; this will analyze your PC hardware and test performance.

We’ve also announced that the base game is priced at $49.99/€49.99, with pre-orders starting soon. If you pre-order, you’ll also receive an adorable Terrarium of Muad’Dib. Now you can keep it in your home and give it the love it deserves instead of drinking its blood, you heartless monster.

You can find more details as well as pictures of the knife and terrarium on our blog here!

Digital Postcards
Arrakis may not be the most relaxing vacation location, but you can still make your family and friends jealous of your adventures with these digital postcards. At very least, they’ll know you haven’t made yourself worm food just yet.

As you progress into the deserts of Arrakis, you’ll unlock a variety of vehicles to help with your survival and control over spice. You may even find yourself building a garage to house your rides for both the land and sky. One of these will be the strong and bulky carrier ornithopter.

While the light ornithopters are built for speed and scouting, these are made for transporting you and your allies to places of interest. Once you hear the boom and see the sky turn purple from a spice blow, it’s all hands on deck. Use the carrier ornithopter to quickly transport a sandcrawler to the spice. This makes harvesting easier, as one of your allies can pilot the sandcrawler even as you drop it onto the sand.

It’s not just limited to sandcrawlers though! Carrier ornithopters can move groundcars and even other ornithopters, so moving as a group is much more convenient.

The following images are concept art created when brainstorming the physical appearance of the carrier ornithopter as well as understanding the functions. Final version (and names!) in the game may change.

Concept art was created by Sheng Lam and Kemp Remillard. Find more of their work in their ArtStations!

The fanart continues to roll in and we’re as happy as a Kulon in a stillsuit! Check out the latest batch of art, and remember, you too can be included in a future issue. Just share your creation by using #CommuninetSignal on social media, or the #fanart channel of the official Discord.

The Sleepers featured here will also be invited to take part in the Dune: Awakening Closed Beta!

Different types of weapons require different ammo. Some dart-based guns will require light darts or heavier darts based on the type of weapon. For example, a Heavy Pistol type weapon uses heavy darts while a Scattergun uses light darts. On top of that you also have flamethrowers, lasguns, and rocket launchers which will all require different ammo.

Each will require you to manage your ammo levels but you're not locked out of using any type of gun. There are no level or "class" requirements to use the different types of guns.

At launch you'll be able to pledge your support to the Atreides or the Harkonnen houses which will each have their own path and rewards. As this is the Dune universe, you will have interactions with those in other factions. For example, CHOAM oversees all (official) commerce on Arrakis, so you'll interact with them at the exchange; the emperor levies a spice tax on Arrakis which you'll have to pay when your base meets certain requirements and so on. We have a lot of plans for future updates but for now this is what we can confirm.

Having a base in Dune: Awakening is extremely important, to say the least. Yes crafting and converting collected blood into water is a large chunk of why it is, but your entire production and resource processing is at your base. From water collection, to creating ingots for weapons and armor, to repairing and recycling.

Additionally, you can share access to your base with others, making it a common place for your friends and guildmates to hang out. And of course, as it’s something you’ll be operating out of, making a garage for vehicle storage is a must-have. Leaving your groundcars or ornithopters outside is risky, as you’re exposing them to the harsh elements of Arrakis. The last thing you want is losing an ornithopter you worked so hard on to a sandstorm.

Ornithopters have several optional modules you can craft and place onto them, one of them being rockets. This will help when you’re dealing with other ornithopters in the sky or sandcrawlers trying to steal spice in the Deep Desert. As with other weapons, ammo levels must be managed, so make sure your ornithopter is fully loaded and armed before heading into combat.

Yes, modules and other “completed” items can be sold at the exchange. Whether you're looking to make some extra Solari by selling the parts, or you're in the market for a new set of ornithopter parts, the exchange is where you want to go. It's also a good place to go to buy and sell unique modules and schematics.

When building a base, the first step will be placing a subfief. This is essentially the core of your home, as it sets your base boundaries of where you can build as well as protects it from outside elements. If it’s removed, you will lose control over the entire base. As you progress in the game you will be able to build up to three subfiefs; this will make moving much easier! Just place another subfief in the new area you want to build in, and start moving your items.

Tearing down your old base is made easier, as building refunds are 100%! So all resources used to create your walls, ceilings, refineries, and so on are given back to you to build your new home. The only exception to this rule is the subfief, where you will receive 50% of resources back when deconstructing it.

This was a really exciting Signal for us with so much to share and we hope you’re as hyped about full launch as we are! Remember to wishlist the game on Steam so you are ready for it on May 20th, and to create the Sleeper of your spice dreams. We want to see those faces whether they’re as pale as a Harkonnen, as suave as an Atreides, or something even a sandworm is too afraid to come close to. You can do that by using #DuneAwakening on social media, or share in the #character-creator-showoff on the official Discord server.

With the release date set in granite, we are looking forward to sharing and showing off even more of what you can expect with launch. It’s only two months away, and we’ll be counting every second. See you on Arrakis soon!
