Endless Sky

Unstable release 0.9.0 [beta]

Version 0.9.0 is now available for anyone who has opted into the "beta" branch. This release includes lots of new content and some changes to the game engine. The biggest change is the addition of Korath territory (13 new ships, 32 new outfits, 8 new weapons, 40 new star systems, and a few other surprises). Other changes include:

  • New human carriers and special "marauder" ships.
  • Dynamic economy (influenced by the player once they have a large fleet).
  • New weapon capabilities (slowing, shield disrupting, piercing, burst firing).
  • Lots of small bug and typo fixes and usability improvements.

There are many other changes, too; for more details, see the changelog.

Special thanks to the folks who contributed new content, bug fixes, etc. to this release: @allixu211, @anarcat, @db47h, @DingusShingleton, @ItsNickBarry, @jafdy, @jmhorjus, @lehgogh, @LocalGod79, @macfreek, @plague006, @reizbar, @sfiera, @thenerdfreak, @thomasballinger, @toilethinges, @tstanke, and @Wrzlprnft.

Stable release 0.8.11

A new stable release (0.8.11) is now live for all players. The release includes a few new features, including:

  • New mission thread to get access to most Wanderer ships.
  • Plundering ammo now reloads your missile launchers.
  • Systems are now colored "dominated" only if every planet in them is dominated.

This release also fixes several bugs, including:

  • Shift-clicking an unreachable system in the map no longer hangs the game.
  • Reordering ships to change your flagship now works properly again.
  • The main menu no longer hangs if you "enter ship" just as it finishes loading.

There are many smaller changes, as well. For more details, see the changelog.

Stable release 0.8.10

After a week of "beta" testing, release 0.8.10 is now the default for all users. Among other things, this release includes:

  • A new alien race (the Wanderers) with 4 ships, 18 outfits, and 17 planets.
  • New jobs and missions, including some for the Hai and the Wanderers.
  • Ships are less likely to go out of the way to interfere with your plundering.
  • Data parsing errors are now reported in "errors.txt" in the preferences folder.
  • Thruster noise from other ships is now audible.
  • The map now shows which planets you have visited.

There are also several bug fixes in this release, including:

  • Clicking on the map now works properly at all zoom levels.
  • Optimized the outfitter display code to not stress the CPU.
  • Net worth above 2 billion is now handled correctly in the saved game file.
  • Raiding parties of human pirates no longer appear in alien territory.

There are many other changes, as well. For a complete list, see the changelog. Thanks to everyone who contributed bug reports, feature ideas, and content to this release!

Stable release 0.8.9

Release 0.8.9 of Endless Sky is now available. After a week in "beta" it is now the default version on Steam. This update includes many small bug fixes, plus some new features, including:

  • All sound effects have been redone, with better volume balance.
  • You can jettison cargo in the info panel, to make room for plunder.
  • The map view can be zoomed in and out.
  • "Keys" are shown explaining the colors used in all the map panels.
  • Many new ship names, hail messages, and commodity names have been added.

See the changelog for a much more detailed list of changes.

There will probably be one more "stable" bug fix release after this, and then I'll switch gears to making larger changes to the code to begin making progress on my goals for the eventual 1.0.0 release.

Special thanks to everyone who reported bugs and to the GitHub users who contributed changes to this new release: guillochon, Pointedstick, Wrzlprnft, anonybosch, dplepage, and ItsNickBarry.

Bug fix release - 0.8.8

This release adds several new features, including AI support for reverse thrusters, a "Buy All" button in the trading panel, and two new ships (the Headhunter heavy interceptor, and the pirate Modified Argosy). It also fixes several bugs, including:

  • Various bugs when the first ship in your ships list is not usable as a flagship (absent, parked, disabled, or a fighter).
  • Possible crash if missions fail while taking off due to lack of cargo space.
  • Frame rate regulation on Windows should also be improved.

As always, this release will start out as an opt-in beta; in the Steam client you can go to Endless Sky -> Properties -> Betas and select "beta" from the drop-down menu to test it. Please report the results of your testing here, and thank you to all of you who have submitted bug reports!

Point release 0.8.7 [beta]

Due to a show-stopper bug which caused fighter bays to stop working in Tuesday's testing release (0.8.5), I've made a new release, 0.8.7. As before, if you want to try the new release you will need to select the "beta" branch in Endless Sky -> Properties -> Betas. I'll make this release live for everyone once I'm sure it's free from new bugs.

This release also fixes a few other crashes and includes a bunch of new cargo and passenger jobs for larger ships.

If you tested out 0.8.5 and had any ships in your fleet that had fighter bays, they may have lost them. You can get them back by editing your saved game and copying in the "fighter" or "drone" lines from the appropriate ship model in the ships.txt game data. (Hopefully this does not affect too many of you.)

Bug fix release: 0.8.5 [beta]

I've published a new release, fixing many of the bugs that have been reported since last week. Just in case this release breaks anything, to start out with I'm making it an opt-in "beta." To switch to the new release, right click Endless Sky in your library and click on Properties. Then, select "beta" from the drop-down menu in the "Betas" tab.

Bug fixes include:

  • The game should now run properly for users with non-ASCII characters in their user names.
  • The popping and crackling noises when firing thrusters have been be fixed.
  • The "New Pilot" dialog has an "ok" button now, and the return key toggles between entering first and last names if one is empty.
  • The "Escape" key now behaves the way people expect it to - closing dialogs instead of always toggling the main menu.
  • When pirates steal outfits from your ship, the effect is applied immediately instead of not showing up until you reload the game.

Many other bug fixes and usability improvements are also included. If you try out the new release, please comment here and let me know if it is working for you or not. Once I've heard from enough people, if everything sounds good, I'll make this the default release.

The saved game format is the same between the previous release and this one, so you can freely switch back and forth between the two without losing any of your game progress.

Thanks for all your feedback and bug reports that helped with this new release!
