Winter Nexus Returns!

Festive capsuleers,

The holiday season is coming to New Eden, and with it returns the ever-popular Winter Nexus series of events and rewards from 15 December 2022 until 3 January 2023! There is also a stuffed calendar of in-game updates and improvements to further spread the holiday cheer.

Whether you’re logging in daily to grab your free gifts as part of the 13 Days of Nexus, enjoying the introduction of multiple overviews and updated Photon UI elements, or admiring new corp and alliance emblems on your ships, there’s something for every capsuleer in EVE this winter.

WINTER NEXUS – VOLATILE ICE STORMS

The roaming Volatile Ice Storms will once again provide exciting and unique Wightstorm combat, mining, and hacking sites with awesome rewards across highsec, lowsec, and nullsec. Be sure to use your variety of Ice Storm Filaments from the daily login rewards or loot drops to transport yourself directly to (and from!) the action.

The Wightstorm combat sites will be most challenging – and rewarding – in lowsec space, followed by the nullsec and highsec varieties. The same goes for the hacking and mining sites, and you can expect last year’s Yoiul Festival and 13 Days of Nexus reward SKINs - plus the unique Yoiul Clone trinkets - to drop as loot at these sites for the 2022 event!

Keep in mind that you’ll be able to take advantage of special bonuses inside the Volatile Ice Storms, allowing you to overheat your modules for longer. That should keep the fire burning throughout your enemies’ hulls this winter!

WINTER NEXUS – 13 DAYS OF NEXUS

Getting into the holiday spirit of gifting, the 13 Days of Nexus daily login rewards will once again provide free Skill Points, new Aurora Universalis SKINs, Expert Systems, Ice Storm Filaments, and more from 15 December until 3 January 2023. This year the 13 Days of Nexus login rewards for Omega pilots also include up to 20,000 EverMarks, which you can exchange for corporation and alliance emblems on ships. Omegas will also receive up to 510,000 Skill Points! Log in on 13 of the 19 days of the Winter Nexus celebrations to grab all the rewards!

WINTER NEXUS – YOIUL FESTIVAL & CHILLING SPREE

In addition to the above, the Winter Nexus also includes the daily and seasonal challenges that provide even more rewards for taking part. The Yoiul Festival seasonal challenges and rewards will allow you to unlock more boosters and new Aurora Universalis SKINs for completing activities within Volatile Ice Storms, and the Chilling Spree will offer up Skill Points for hitting fellow capsuleers with snowballs daily!

WINTER NEXUS – ABYSSAL PROVING GROUNDS

If slinging snowballs at each other isn’t enough, you’ll also be able to go nose to nose with your fellow capsuleers in dedicated Abyssal Proving Grounds events, themed around the special Ice Storm environment! You’ll have new opportunities to overheat your modules for longer and get a bigger speed boost from afterburner modules too!

Here are the different formats you’ll be able to tackle throughout the festive season:
  • Yoiul 1v1 T1 cruisers - 16-19 December
  • Yoiul T1 destroyer 4-player free-for-all - 30 December - 2 January

MORE CORP & ALLIANCE EMBLEMS

Following the successful debut of corporation and alliance emblems on over 100 ships with the launch of the Uprising expansion, on 15 December Paragon will make those emblems available on a further 186 ships! These include all remaining frigates, destroyers, cruisers of all tech levels, Tech I mining barges and exhumers, and non-capital industrial ships. Remember, as an Omega, you get more EverMarks for every Paragon agent mission completed, and you’ll get up to 20,000 EverMarks during the 13 Days of Nexus to use on these new emblems!

PHOTON UI UPDATES

As part of the ongoing EVE Evolved initiative, the Photon UI has undergone a number of updates this holiday season to give players a more modernized in-game interface to enjoy. Be sure to check out the summary of those improvements up to November for more info.

In addition, since this time of year is about getting what you’ve asked for, the much-requested introduction of multiple overview windows in EVE is now live in-game! The overview is an essential tactical tool and allowing multiple instances of it will mean that you can tailor the presented information to your chosen playstyle in a more precise way than ever before. Speaking of which, don’t forget that a new default overview based on the popular Z-S Overview pack is now available to all players, too!

Further updates to Photon UI include settings for window margin size, updated security colors, transparency controls, and an auto UI scaling option.

Due to the number of changes and improvements made since the opt-out release in October, we have reset the opt-out state of all clients. If you still wish to use the classic UI instead, you will need to opt out again.

UPDATES FOR NEW PLAYERS

As part of the ongoing improvements made to help fresh capsuleers enter the universe of New Eden more seamlessly and find their path, career agent mission updates have arrived just in time for the holiday season. This includes UI guidance improvements throughout the Industrialist paths, tweaks to mission objectives, reward rebalancing, more clarity in mission text, and more. One of the main outcomes has been an observed rise in the new player completion rate for these missions. With today’s release, you will continue seeing improvements such as these made to career agent missions.

In addition, an introductory short mission has also been added to guide players through the ship personalization process. The journey incudes being introduced to IRIS, receiving a Paragon gift crate, assembling and boarding a destroyer, learning about the PLEX Vault and wallet, then purchasing, redeeming, and activating a SKIN through the ‘Personalization’ tab. Be sure to check out the patch notes for full details.

Furthermore, the AIR Career Program will see an update later this week with better visuals and usability changes that will improve the experience of new capsuleers.

RESOURCES REALIGNED

Following the recent discovery by Upwell Consortium Corporations, new ores can now be found distributed in close proximity to some type A0 blue stars. These resources have appeared mainly in nullsec and wormhole space, specifically the following asteroid types:

Factional Warfare Overhaul

War-hungry capsuleers,

The face of war in New Eden has changed since the launch of Uprising, EVE’s latest narrative-driven expansion. The conflict between the four main empires has seen noticeable escalation over the last several months. They are beginning to directly intervene in the warzones, and the diplomatic ties they once shared seem to be increasingly ignored. The Uprising expansion ushered in a suite of new navy ships, corporation and alliance emblems for ships, new immersive Upwell hangars, and major changes to Factional Warfare (FW), signaling the future of war arriving to New Eden.

Now that the expansion has been live for several weeks, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the changes to Factional Warfare and give you a sneak peek into what’s coming up next in the warzone.

FACTIONAL WARFARE- PAST AND PRESENT

Before the Uprising expansion, one of the key desires of players was to make Factional Warfare easier to navigate and easier to locate the action. With the new Frontline system, more topology has been added to these systems, creating an all-new dynamic and giving players clearer direction. Systems closest to the action – Frontline systems – have the greatest rewards. Meanwhile, the Rearguard systems are significantly safer and have comparatively lower rewards. This dynamic system is easily understandable, so when you undock you know the amount of risk you are taking. These design elements can be applied to other areas of space as well, so when we say the future of warfare is changing, this is what we have in mind.

It’s been a thrill to watch all the activity and skirmishes over territory and resources on the Frontlines following the Uprising expansion and we hope this shift in the warzone has resonated with all of you participating.

Another goal of ours was to address the one-sided swings in the Warzone. Since Uprising, we have seen a great impact in this vein with a noticeably more equal playing field for all four empires, allowing capsuleers to fight for the empire that they want to support, rather than the empire that can net them the most profit.

In the spirit of fighting for your chosen empire, we’re offering new themed banners that allow you to proudly fly the colors of your chosen empire. You can access them here.

NEW SHIPS IN THE WARZONE

The Uprising expansion has completely shaken up Factional Warfare in more ways than one! The new line of Navy ships introduced in Uprising are already leaving their mark, with the Navy Destroyers being some of the most utilized ships in the warzone.

We've also seen plenty of older ships - rebalanced during Uprising - making their presence known. Ships like the Exequror Navy Issue are dominating the killboards.

The Uprising expansion also improved several Navy faction ships as well as adding balance updates to Heavy Assault Cruisers which has shifted warfare strategies across New Eden.

Uprising brings more variety to larger scale PvP engagements, so no longer are heavy assault cruisers crowding the field. With the latest changes, these ships are now forced to fight in closer quarters, making room for more ships and a wider variety of tactics. Like with the FW warzone, ship diversity is at an all-time high!

The tactics and action surrounding Factional Warfare are still evolving post-expansion, and we can't wait to see where you take it.

The left shows ships used before Uprising, and the right is just after

UPDATED COMPLEXES AND EXCITING NEW BATTLEFIELDS

Unique to the Frontlines are new Battlefield sites - aimed at organized groups of 25+ players and offering significant rewards for both individual capsuleers and their represented empire factions. These sites offer new objectives for player groups, and we've been enjoying the stories and tactics that you all have been coming up with - from Thrasher Fleet spam to brick-tanked Navy Scorps!

We've been closely monitoring the Battlefields and have put together a list of ongoing areas of focus:
  • Adjusting payout mechanics to reward more active participation and discourage "seagulling"
  • Balancing the individual and empire rewards (Loyalty points for capsuleers, Advantage Points and Victory Points for empires)
  • Adjusting the "Defender LP penalty" that is applied, which currently makes it less optimal to contest the Battlefields that spawn in your own Frontlines, compared to those in enemy Frontlines
  • Focusing Battlefields primarily on Advantage rather than victory points so they augment plex running, but do not replace it
  • Adjusting Battlefield spawn rate and capture speed. We like how these are focal points for conflict, but we're aware that their rewards - both LP and VP - potentially overshadow the other complexes. We want to ensure these still feel like rare and exciting sites, but we also want to make sure they're not the only sites worth running.

The ship eligibilities across the Factional Warfare Complexes have also been rebalanced, creating new and cost effective PvP metas and making for wider accessibility and a fairer fight within them. Since this change, capsuleers are now more eager to engage in battle, leading to a significant increase in activity in these complexes.

THE FUTURE OF FACTIONAL WARFARE

The future of war has begun, and this is just the beginning of Factional Warfare improvements for EVE. We welcome your feedback in (this dedicated forum post) on how we can make FW even better moving forward. As we continue to improve and iterate, addressing some pain points and making various improvements, from NPC interaction with supply depots to Advantage System balance, we're excited to see many more of you join in Q1 of next year with the launch of an exciting new feature, that will allow individuals to join the fight without having to leave their existing groups.

Although there’s more on the horizon, Factional Warfare has already become a space that is rife with activity and possibilities. One of the primary goals has already been achieved following Uprising: focusing capsuleer efforts towards emerging key conflicts making the warzone more fun and exciting to participate in. This has already led to a huge increase in capsuleers participating in PvP, with equal growth in the number of kills within FW systems.

There is so much more to come, and we can’t wait to reveal more on the future of war over the coming weeks and months. In the meantime, see you on the battlefield!

Fight with honor, capsuleers.

Resources Realigned

Prospecting capsuleers,

Two recent exploratory and regulatory developments between the factions and corporations of New Eden are set to disrupt the cluster’s industrial landscape next week:

NEW ORE TYPES

Surveys conducted by four Upwell signatory corporations have revealed fields of novel mineral-rich asteroids in close proximity to type A0 blue stars across New Eden. Each of these new asteroid types will be named for the corporations involved in their discovery, and contain high concentrations of specific minerals:

LUNAR CONSERVATION

Concern by the Empires regarding the over-extraction of moon ore has led to a compromise between CONCORD, the Upwell Consortium, and ORE which will see maximum moon mining yield reduced by 25% – striking a balance between necessary conservation and last year’s doubling of extraction yields.

The Upwell Consortium's rollout of requisite firmware updates is set to take place next week, concurrent with the public release of the coordinates for the newly discovered near-solar asteroid fields.

As part of resource distribution plan, we intend for this to ease some bottlenecks in T1 industry, specifically as it pertains to capital manufacturing which is ramping up, while ensuring that T2 resource harvesting & industry remains profitable.

Prepare for a realignment of resources, capsuleers – we'll see you in space!

Factional Friction in the Proving Grounds!

Factitious capsuleers,

Carry the interstellar animosities of Uprising into the Abyss in the next Proving Ground event, tag-teaming your opponents in turbulent 2v2 combat aboard top-of-the-line Empire Navy frigates!!

This event begins at 11:00 UTC on 10 December, and runs until 11:00 UTC on 12 December.

The ruleset is as follows:

  • Only the Imperial Navy Slicer, Crucifier Navy Issue, Magnate Navy Issue, Caldari Navy Hookbill, Griffin Navy Issue, Heron Navy Issue, Federation Navy Comet, Maulus Navy Issue, Imicus Navy Issue, Republic Fleet Firetail, Vigil Fleet Issue, and Probe Fleet Issue may enter this event.
  • Overheat bonuses for turrets & missile launchers as well as tackle, propulsion, repair, resistance, and energy warfare modules are doubled.
  • +500 bonus shield, armor, and hull HP for all ships that enter the arena.
  • Pilots receive 10 million ISK payout per match where they deal at least 2000 damage.
  • Sensor dampeners, weapon disruptors, and shield boost amplifiers, rechargers, power relays, and flux coils cannot be fitted.
  • Maximum of one local repair module per ship (shield or armor).
  • Modules and implants are restricted to meta level 5 and below.

Improving Photon UI

Why Photon?

Photon is a massive undertaking to overhaul the EVE User Interface. The current UI is functional, so many players have asked why we chose to embark on a large project like this.

During its twenty year development, EVE has seen many features, all with specific user interface needs. Some of these features have pushed the UI into new territory, exploring new ways to improve the interface, but not always with an established design language in mind. This has made parts of the UI less than cohesive, even confusing, and difficult to master. In addition, maintaining many UI styles is ineffective, leading to increased development time.

Last year saw the formation of a dedicated User Experience team, whose primary responsibility would be the in-space experience of EVE Online. As EVE’s user interface allows access to nearly every feature while in space, there was a lot to consider. Efficiency and sustainability need to be considered, not only from a development and technology point of view, but also on a user experience level. This is all a part of EVE Evolved and setting EVE Online up for the third decade.

At this point, all the different UI styles needed to be realigned so the actual UI improvements would build on a solid foundation. This was particularly important given that we would be touching up the interfaces of many more features in the future and tackling one of the most complex aspects of EVE Online’s interface: The HUD (which would include the Overview). The different UI styles implemented in certain features over the years were all pulling in different directions, not only complicating design decisions but also causing confusion and frustration for players.

The goal is to make the UI more intuitive, accessible, and coherent while crafting an inspiring sci-fi user experience. As such, a solid design system for the UI was needed and thus Photon was chosen as the first big project. A design system is more than a style guide for designs. It also involves looking at the UI framework and improving the underlying technologies, resolving or limiting any technical debt, and removing as many inconsistencies as possible.

It was apparent that a new way to engage with players to gather feedback was needed, as the UI must serve a multitude of different playstyles and situations, not to mention the vast array of hardware we support. Ultimately, the UI is for the players, and it was important to us to co-develop with them. We therefore felt it was imperative to get the ideas into players’ hands as quickly as possible. Test servers are usually only used by a small portion of the user base, in EVE and the gaming industry in general, so we decided to allow players to opt in to test the new features on the actual live server, using their main characters and going about their normal, daily activities. This new approach was formalized into the Feature Previews System, and Photon was released as an opt-in beta in early May.

The adoption rate of Photon UI grew steadily, while valuable feedback was gathered from forums, social media, and many customer surveys and interviews. Based on this, many improvements were made over the summer. In September Photon reached 17% opt-in adoption by the user base, which was substantially higher than expected for an opt-in feature. However, because the UI is such an important and complicated subject, more feedback from a wider audience was needed. In October, we therefore moved to an opt-out approach for Photon, allowing those players who still preferred the classic UI the ability to switch back, but also getting Photon into the hands of users that may not even have been aware of its existence.

Photon has come a long way since that first opt-in release. Here are some highlights:
  • A full re-skin of all the UI’s base components.
  • All the design elements such as buttons, tabs, and window headers converged into a single, coherent style.
  • Updated font style and the rules for how it is used.
  • A new and more UX-focused color library, with new color themes
  • Enhanced sci-fi experience with transitional screen animations
  • Compact Mode for all "combat" windows
  • Many quality-of-life improvements across various feature windows, e.g. Drone window, Inventory Window

At the end of the first day of Opt-Out on 11 October, 84% of players ended their sessions with Photon UI enabled. This number has grown steadily ever since and currently 91% of players have switched to using Photon UI. But we are not done yet!

Multiple overviews are coming!

On 13 December, the Multiple Overview will be available along with a variety of other updates, including settings for window margin size, updated security colors, transparency controls and an auto UI scaling option.

The Overview has been and remains the go-to tool to extract tactical information from your surroundings to stay ahead of the game, and this crucial window is now getting a respectable update.

The headline feature is beyond doubt the new ability to have multiple Overview windows open at the same time, allowing you to tailor the tactical information presented to your playstyle much more precisely than before.

Other improvements include:
  • Column visibility, order, and width are now configured and persisted per tab, instead of globally before.
  • “Presets” have been renamed as “Filters”, in hope that the clearer terminology helps people better understand how the Overview works.
  • Improvements to how Filters are authored in the Overview Settings window.
  • Improved Overview right-click menus.

The improved Overview is already available on Singularity (test server). To begin with, the feature is being offered as a separate opt-in (if you have Photon enabled), which you simply enable through the Escape Menu’s “Feature Preview” panel (as with Photon, but no reset of the client is required for this feature).

Other notable updates and additions coming with the December release are:
  • Window Margin Size - A setting that allows you to change the size of the margin and header on all windows. This option can be found in the General Settings section of the Settings menu.
  • Security Colors - The Security colors have been updated with higher contrast so that they are more distinct from one another.
  • Auto UI Scaling - An option in the UI Scaling dropdown that when selected will automatically update the UI Scaling each time the resolution of the client is changed.
  • ’Light Background’ Transparency Controls - Separate controls for the transparency of windows set to ‘Light Background’
  • Window Resize Indicators - Indicators in the Photon UI style that become visible when hovering over the edge of a window, which makes it easier to adjust the window size.
  • Updated Scrollbar - The scrollbar in Photon UI is now static and no longer expands and collapses when hovering over it.

These updates are aimed at addressing some of the main areas of improvement pointed out by the community. Thank all of you that have been a part of this back-and-forth process, as it is an integral part of the process of developing a kick-ass user experience. As always, any and all feedback is appreciated!

o7

Please Note: Due to the number of changes and improvements made since the Opt-Out release in October, we will be resetting the Opt-Out state of all clients on December 13th. If you still wish to use the Classic UI instead, you will need to opt out again. We hope that you give the new improvements a try and then give your feedback on our forum: Multiple Overviews Feedback Thread
