Eve Online

EVE Online - Winter Status Update

Greetings Capsuleers,

EVE Online is turning 19 in just five months’ time, and we cannot wait to celebrate it with you in person in Reykjavík come May 2022. We want to set EVE up for a thriving third decade, and ultimately have it outlive us all. To achieve that – as you have heard about before – the last two years have been focused on three pillars; building a vibrant EVE ecosystem, helping new players out to make sure there are new untrained pilots coming in every month to join your ranks, and investing in the technical infrastructure of the game.

A New Dawn

Nearly two years ago we – both CCP and the players – began a massive undertaking: to bring the economy to a healthy state, and to set the game up for a third decade. We understand full well that it was not without challenges and hardships, and while EVE players are well known for being the most resilient problem-solvers in gaming, we’re aware of the strain it put on you. Now that order and balance has been restored to the resource and manufacturing aspects of New Eden, more resources have and will become available, and focus can be put on other areas of New Eden.

From Extraction to Production announced a bevy of changes. We typically don’t post updates as comprehensive, dense, and raw as we did with this blog (it was more a Dev Proposal & Discussion than Dev Blog) but with so much changing – and so much at stake – we wanted as much feedback on the changes as possible.

On that note, it has been a lively few weeks. We’ve been listening, discussing, and adjusting based on comments and responses. A huge thank you must go out to all those players who started conversations and provided constructive feedback on the forums, podcasts, blogs, streams, Discord communities, and elsewhere. We’d also like to thank CSM16, with whom we’ve been working with on these changes since August, for providing valuable feedback and context for the upcoming changes.

Mining is the cornerstone of New Eden, and mining ships across the board are now stronger, more efficient, and more accessible. We want to create the same kind of diversity for miners as the other careers and we are already seeing a large increase in both mining volume and numbers of players mining. This also opens up possibilities for the future, especially as it pertains to dynamic distribution or future mining sites.

Attention will be paid to production bottlenecks as they arise. Faction & pirate ship construction will be viable to undertake. For battleships, the approach will be to boost the power of those ships to be more in line with the cost and complexity associated with building them. Battleships hold a great spot in EVE's history, and we want to ensure they've got a suitable place in the meta for both PvP and PvE.

Areas of focus until Fanfest

It’s time to look ahead. New Eden has strong foundations, so now is the time to look at additions and improvements, rather than removals and revisions. Below you can find some highlights of the focus areas until Fanfest.

Compression

Since the early days of EVE, mining and industry has amounted to the following: train these skills, fly this ship, fit these modules and now you’re the best. Too often there was no choice because there was only one choice, and at odds with the rest of EVE, which puts a high value on specialization and different options. To that end, we want to ensure there’s a dynamic where industry experts can flaunt their knowledge and mastery of systems, and gain a competitive advantage so that their specialization and decision-making is rewarded.

Compression is a key element of industry, and expanding into gas & moon ore is vital for the economy. As with mining, industry-minded players will have more tools at their disposal. That said, our aim is to add decision-making – not tedium – and the compression update will reflect that.

Rorquals

During the Age of Abundance, a few hundred Rorquals were outperforming the rest of the universe combined in terms of mining yield. With the Rorqual being so efficient and powerful, it almost necessitated players to form larger and larger groups. It was simply the best at everything, with no tradeoffs, and was pricing players out of the market.

While the role of the Rorqual has been reverted to on-field support ship, its buffed Mining Foreman links, PANIC feature, survivability, and compression capability – tied with an impressive solo mining yield – make it a crucial asset for mining operations in Nullsec and Lowsec. And, as some of you may have seen on the Singularity test server, we are also considering improvements to Rorqual maneuverability with group-jump features.

Capitals

Whether you’re planning to fly them or build them, Capital Ships represent an aspirational goal for many players. A well-orchestrated ‘Dreadbomb’ should be a cost effective counter to other Capital and Supercapital classes, and we see time and time again the amazing fights that these create. As the industry changes settle, the material requirements to build these ships to ensure they are both cost effective and replaceable will be reviewed.

In addition, more capital-oriented combat sites are on the horizon, which you already may have seen a glimpse of in the Winter Nexus event. We look forward to working with the community in the future to make sure these sites will be rewarding enough to be worth the risk.

Citadels

Citadels play a critical role in New Eden and like anything have areas of opportunity. This entails citadel proliferation and combat, specifically targeting structure combat, tether and placement rules, with special attention paid to the roles structures play in the Faction Warfare warzones. Many of these topics were raised by dozens of New Eden’s most talented and prolific Fleet Commanders across all areas of New Eden, and with large undertakings like this, it is important to listen to all points of view.

Sovereignty

Aligning and improving sovereignty and how ownership is established across the universe is incredibly important, to both new players and veterans. The plan is to create tactical in-space objectives for small, medium, and large groups in space to fight over and allowing players who control space to decide what that space will be used for - with iHubs playing a critical role. Stay tuned for more.

EVE Academy

September was a great and an important month for EVE. The recently-introduced AIR New Player Experience (NPE) that launched in September is an engaging, cinematic experience, and already the average first session of people trying out the game for the first time has increased by 30%, which is leading to increased retention.

The next step will be to add a mining chapter in order to teach a core competency, give new players a taste of more things they can do in New Eden, and give them a fundamental skillset. As time progresses, the goal is to move further into a Capsuleer’s life and apply the same tech and artistry.

With the update to skill training and introduction of opportunities, we are helping players set goals early on in their EVE career. The newly released Corporation Skill Plans allow players to author optimal Skill Plans to get new recruits up and running, as well as create doctrine Skill Plans for combat operations, industry etc.

Furthermore, fittings are supported in the creation process so players without corporations can still tap into community power by dragging community fittings into their Skill Plans, starting training with a single button click. Additional acts of the NPE will fold updated Career Agents into the mix.

The EVE Academy website, which is seeing a lot of traffic every day, has been continuously updated since launch and has received an overhaul to make it even more beneficial for players.

EVE launched on the Epic Games Store in September and went fully native on Mac in October. Both of these avenues have seen an influx of new and returning players coming to play the game.

This adds up to more cadets that are better equipped for corporations to recruit, players to fly with, or spaceships to blow up.

Technical Foundation

The September release was a significant moment in time for EVE, with the introduction of Quasar. More and more features of the game are now being decoupled from Tranquility and moved into Quasar. Lost in the bright lights of the new NPE and tucked under the pixels of Skill Plans reverberates a fundamental change in how EVE Online moves into the future, allowing more power to go to the things you love; blowing up spaceships!

The technological advancements made by launching EVE natively on Mac are already contributing to internal development efforts to modernize the game engine. There will be more news on this early next year and we are excited to bring new capabilities and advancements to EVE.

Why is this important? Modernizing the tech stack of EVE is pivotal as it allows for more momentum and agility in a rapidly changing world. It also opens up more opportunities to expose more powerful features across more mediums, but more importantly it simply decreases the load on Tranquility, which in turn increases performance. We are in a perpetual arms race with the EVE community; as the tech behind EVE becomes more powerful, the Capsuleers of New Eden find ways to push Tranquility to its absolute limits.

For the last 19 years, the EVE community has set record after record when it comes to gaming’s biggest battles. We don’t see that changing any time soon and will continue to try and push the boundaries of what is possible when it comes to large-scale warfare.

In Closing

The foundations of the EVE ecosystem are strong. PLEX prices have stabilized, stockpiles are healthy, great strides have been made in the war against botting (as evidenced by the skyrocketing RMT ISK price), and there are more ways to earn a living. The foundation allows us to build with more confidence and add more sand to the sandbox. What players can expect from now on is an increase in ship production, capitals out in space, new exciting strategic goals for small, medium, and large fleets – and more.

Whether you’ve just started your EVE journey exploring in a Heron, or you’re a seasoned vet mining in a Mackinaw or brawling in a Vargur, there’s nothing that beats hanging out with EVE players. We’ve already had the good fortune of meeting players at EVE Vegas & EVE London this year, as well as chatting to the pilots at EVE Down Under. Nothing is quite like having hundreds of our closest space friends pile into Reykjavik for EVE Fanfest.

We can’t wait to see you this May for EVE Fanfest – either here in Reykjavik or watching at home on CCPTV - and share more about the exciting plans for the future of EVE Online; increased agency, making player actions matter even more, impacting how the world reacts to player interaction and how empires and alliances wage their wars.

In the short term, join CCP Rattati, CCP Swift, and CCP Paragon on CCPTV this Thursday at 19:00 EVE Time for a livestream and Q&A for insights on anything EVE. Finally, for the holiday season, jump into the Winter Nexus! In this event, anyone can find some activity to their liking, be it combat, exploration, or mining - and even rumors of the new experimental capital site. Don’t forget to claim your rewards during the 13 days of Nexus!

From all of us here at CCP, we wish you a happy holiday season.

From Extraction to Production

Industrious Capsuleers,

The New Dawn Quadrant is in full swing, and an across-the-board update to all areas of New Eden’s most vital profession is live now! The changes included in this release were first announced in the From Extraction to Production feedback blog, and a number of features have received iteration following testing and feedback – all of which you can catch up on in the From Extraction to Production: Update thread on the forums. Dig in and ready yourself to stake your claim in the material riches of New Eden!

All mining ships have received significant rebalances. Mining barges and exhumers have been given major buffs to survivability and mining yield. The Orca can now fit new Large Industrial Core modules, covering much of its previous mining capabilities while greatly enhancing its ability to bolster fleetmates’ yield, and the Rorqual has been brought into balance with the rest of EVE’s mining ships – revising its newly renamed Capital Industrial Core modules to increase the effectiveness of boosts while still providing an appreciable mining yield. The original changes announced for the Venture, Prospect, and Endurance have been reverted after consideration of feedback, retaining the flexible and well-established part they already play in New Eden’s varying professions.

Harvestable resources of every variety have been doubled across the board, from asteroid belts, to ice, to gas sites, to moon extractions – bringing players more opportunity than ever before to carve out their own bountiful destiny among the stars. Additionally, all standard Ore Reprocessing skills (not including Moon Ore Reprocessing) have been condensed into just new skills, covering the six new “tiers” all non-moon ore has been reorganized into, streamlining the processing stages of the industries that fuel New Eden – with the previous reprocessing skills’ Skill Points and ISK cost being refunded for each character who has them trained. The new tiers are as follows:

Mining crystals, used by modulated mining modules, have also been completely revamped – with Tech I and II crystals for each of the new tiers, including Abyssal Ores! Each of these tiered crystals, along with the existing tiered moon ore mining crystals, have three separate variants – providing the new standard increased yield with normal “residue” probability (Type A), further increased yield with more risk of residue (Type B), or negligible yield eroding away enormous quantities of resources (Type C), enabling new styles of aggressive gameplay!

Mining residue is a new mechanic that adds a chance of destroying a unit of a resource from the source itself (never decreasing your actual yield each cycle) to every module and drone capable of gathering ore, ice, or gas – creating a new dynamic which, combined with doubled resources across the entire game, provides a net increase in total gathered resources while simultaneously setting the stage for more dynamic resource distribution mechanics in the future. The original formula for this new aspect of industry has been updated following player feedback and testing, providing an intuitive and fair pattern for what kinds of modules and drones have lower or higher chances of producing residue:

Lastly, in-development plans for a compression revamp, heavily involving the Orca and Rorqual, have been delayed into early 2022 in order for all changes to be thoroughly evaluated and for the resulting features to be a positive and engaging gameplay experience. Until then, compression will continue to operate as it does currently.

We’d like to thank the passionate EVE community as a whole for the wealth of valuable feedback that’s informed the revisions and considerations made for these changes, as well as for all the updates yet to come. We’re eager to listen, and we’re determined to bring you the most needed improvements to New Eden’s industrial landscape in their best possible form as the New Dawn Quadrant marches on, laying the groundwork for a prosperous and ever-thriving future as EVE Online approaches its third decade – so set out and stake your claim, and we’ll see you in space!

Community Beat for 3 December

Capsuleers, welcome back to the Community Beat!

In our last publication we covered the kings of Alliance Tournament XVII, introduced the go-to place for lore in New Eden, took a peek at the fights in the Curse region, chatted with CCP Swift and CCP Aurora, and found a heart-warming story of Capsuleer love at EVE London.

The EVE community has been up to a lot since then. So as the Beat goes on, we look at some EVE traditions, check out some stunning artwork, celebrate a space-trucking milestone, and more!

Community Event – Luminaire Snowball Fight

Home to both Gallente Prime and Caldari Prime, the system of Luminaire has more history than most in New Eden. From infamous Caldari leader Tibus Heth liberating a planet, to Operation Highlander which saw players send the State Leviathan crashing down onto the planet’s surface. Despite all the fighting – and in classic EVE fashion – Luminaire also plays host to an epic snowball fight.

What is a snowball fight, you ask? Just a fun event where hundreds of players hurl in-game snowballs at one another. There are lightshows with prizes and even a secret Santa exchange! Thanks to Commander A9, this event has been going since the festival launcher was added to the game and we’ve come to expect it every December. Mark your calendars and stop by on 19 December @ 21:00 UTC to be part of EVE history.

We’ll see you there!

Community Corner – PushX

Artwork: Miyoshi Akachi

Precious few corporations and alliances in New Eden can survive for 10 years, but that’s exactly what PushX is celebrating this week! Since 2012, the members of PushX have been hauling goods around the universe for tens of thousands of different customers. They don’t care where you are, who you fly with, or what your standings are – all they care about is that you pay your bill! And boy have they hauled –PushX’s CEO Cassie Helio estimates that they have completed over 300,000 contracts and over 4,000,000 (MILLION) jumps!! Now that is a lot of space trucking.

Congratulations to PushX for keeping up with the delivery demands of New Eden for the past ten years. Here’s to the next ten o7.

Fleet Upside-down!

Another institution celebrating 10 years is Australia’s player meet: EVE Down Under! This year’s event was an all-digital affair, but that didn’t hamper the good times. Both CCP Convict and CCP Larrikin were in attendance and gave short presentations about life in the Australian timezone, with some fun stats sprinkled in. Following that was a player panel with prominent Australian players where they chatted about EVE and engaged with chat. And what would an EDU be without explosions? The staff hosted a 2v2 faction battleship tournament with plenty of hijinks suited for the Australian community. Congrats to ‘The Emu’s Won’ for, well, winning!

Huge shout-out to Sin Alarma and the EVE Down Under crew for putting on the event!

Partner Spotlight

Exploration, Abyssal Deadspace, escalations, seasonal events – no matter your PvE interests, Erstschlag has you covered! With his calm-yet-informative demeanor, Erstschlag’s broadcasts cover topics that new players can understand, and advanced players can learn from. Whenever a new challenge is in front of him, Erstschlag is quick to explore the new content, theorycraft solutions, and test & refine those strategies in front of a live audience. The content is great, but we’re always impressed with the level of thought that goes into his approach as well. Erstschlag streams daily and puts evergreen content on his YouTube channel, so hop on over if you want to learn more about PvE activities. With the Winter Nexus just around the corner, he’ll undoubtedly be breaking down all the fun content that the event will entail.

Art Corner

Agent Blackbear sent us this jaw-dropping acrylic painting that he had commissioned by a local artist to celebrate his love for EVE Online. This interpretation of a fleet in warp has us trying to spot all the different ships and looking at our own walls to see how we can improve them! Thanks for sharing, Agent Blackbear, it’s a fantastic piece.

EVE Tradition – The Cyno Vigil

Eyes forward, Capsuleer, the cyno is not yet lit.

Consider your modules, your rigs and ammo before you undock, for the cyno is not yet lit.

Break free of the station and witness the universe before you, for the cyno is not yet lit.

Set your ship to fly through the vastness while you wait, for the cyno is not yet lit.

Pay attention, Capsuleer, for those who have gone before you call for you to join them.

The cyno is now lit.

-Dranchela

EVE Online is nearly 20 years old, and over the years the community has created many in-game customs and traditions. One of the most somber is the ‘Cyno Vigil’ – a gathering of players lighting cynosural field generators in unison to celebrate the life of players who have passed away.

On 28 November, corpmates and friends of EVE player ‘Stepro’ gathered in the system of C0O6-K to honor their fallen companion who passed away on 7 November. Over 100 cynos were lit, respects were paid, and fun stories were shared. The tradition of the Cyno Vigil is a beautiful reminder of the strength of friendships forged in New Eden.

That's all for this installment. Head on over to the EVE Online forums to chat and share your stories, or check out EVE Pulse for a different look at what’s going on in EVE!

Celebrate EVE Japan’s First Anniversary

Intrepid Capsuleers!

It’s been one year since EVE Online successfully relaunched in Japan, opening up the gates of New Eden to a new community of bold pilots.

This relaunch was the result of close collaboration between CCP, our enthusiastic Japanese EVE-playing community, and our experienced partners overseas. It’s been fantastic to see the community grow throughout 2021.

On the official Japanese EVE Online Twitter we will be hosting a few activities for the community to participate in throughout December.

The Zakura Shumyu SKINS for marauders and select battleships are also returning to the New Eden Store! Both of these offers are available to purchase between 3-13 December.

Here’s to many more anniversary celebrations in the years to come!

The Capsuleer Chronicles – A New EVE Comic Series

Story-hungry Capsuleers,

We’re proud to introduce The Capsuleer Chronicles, a new EVE Online comic series developed in partnership between our Narrative team and Dark Horse Comics!

Dive into the story of Adore, a daring Capsuleer with a checkered service record, as she becomes embroiled in the Triglavian Invasion of Raravoss – the flashpoint that led to the very first attainment of Final Liminality.

[previewyoutube="BzFe0a0gx1E;full"]

This days-long battle saw the involvement of thousands of independent Capsuleers on either side of the conflict, fighting alongside EDENCOM or heeding the call of the enigmatic Zorya Triglav to turn against the Empires and assist the Triglavians in their campaign to regain a foothold in the “Ancient Domains” they were long ago forced to abandon.

The first chapter in the four-part series, “Velocity”, can be previewed on the comic’s official landing page, with the full 20-page chapter available to read online through a selection of partners for free! The rest of the series is slated to be released throughout the upcoming year, and you can discuss this exciting story with your fellow players in this thread on the EVE Forums.!

Experience the chaos of Raravoss once more – we’ll see you in space!

Proving Grounds – 4-Player Prophecy FFA!

Thrill-seeking Capsuleers,

The Abyssal Proving Grounds are open again for battle, and this time the focus is on 4-player free-for-alls exclusively featuring the mighty Prophecy battlecruisers. This special event runs from 11:00 UTC 26 November to 11:00 UTC 30 November.

Based on the design of an ancient Amarrian warship once used in the founding days of starship combat, Prophecies initially served as artillery support battleships, but over time have evolved from modestly sized gunboats into powerful drone boats. Pitted against one another in the Abyssal Proving Ground, these distinct ships promise to deliver one-of-a-kind, thrilling combat.

The following arena effects will be in place throughout the event:

Pilots that join this Proving Grounds event will be restricted to Meta 5 modules, and must respect a limit of two local repair modules (for shield or armor) per ship.

Additionally, sensor dampeners, weapon disruptors, shield power relays, shield flux coils, and core defence field purgers are banned across the battles for this Proving Grounds event.

Finally, this Abyssal Proving Grounds event happens to take place at the same time as unmissable Black Friday offers are made available across EVE. There are discounts on PLEX, free SKINs, daily rewards and New Eden Store specials. You can learn more about EVE’s Black Friday deals here.

Joining in with the Black Friday spirit, this Abyssal Proving Grounds offers a special challenge that rewards the most devastating combatants with ISK. Enter any of this round of Prophecy free-for-alls, and in each instance where you do at least 7,000 damage to your opponents, you will gain 30 million ISK. It’s a repeatable challenge, meaning every time you join a skirmish, it’s a chance to top up your ISK.

To join this round of combat, grab your Proving Filaments and head to the Abyssal Proving grounds from 26 November. And, as ever, the Proving Grounds leaderboards will allow you to track Capsuleer performance throughout the timeframe in which the free-for-all is live.
