Football Drama

Football Drama Soundtrack DLC Available On Release

Football Drama has an original soundtrack that reflects and inspires the atmospheres of the game. The composer and main performer is Ascari (Marta Ascari) who worked closely with the designers and Football Drama's concept in order to create a work aligned with the game's intended meaning.

Ascari involved several musicians (as detailed in the soundtrack page) with research and studio recordings in order to maximize the resulting quality.

The soundtrack includes a song with Marta as the singer (and composer) that refers to a crucial theme of the narrative, with words from Football Drama's game designer Pietro Polsinelli.

You can buy the soundtrack as Football Drama's DLC here.

Football Drama Releasing on September 18: This Week!

Football Drama will be released on Steam for Windows and Mac (also on mobile) this week on Wednesday 18th. First week with 15% discount, also soundtrack & bundle available.

Evaluation keys are available now, write to games@open-lab.com.

In Football Drama, you’re Rocco Galliano, the existentially troubled manager of a struggling football team. Train players, survive the drama, choose your own narrative, and play turn-based football matches via hard choices and special cards. If you avoid the axe you could win the championship, understand what is football, retire at the French Riviera, end up in jail, or who knows what else!

Football Drama is a narrative game with choices, that generates cards and power to be used in fast turn-based matches as part of a football championship. In match controls allow to always pick between safe and risky choices, balancing team conditions.

Football Drama Chinese Translation Update

Football Drama Gameplay Tips

In this Football Drama tips video you find explanations and tips about gameplay. While you always have "only" two choices and the cards, and it all seems simple, actually the results involve loads of parameters that are considered behind the scenes. So no it's not all random!

The Wave That Carries The Underdog

One of the reasons for football fascination is that the underdog always has a chance. How could we model that in an algorithm without recurring to randomness?

In Football Drama we used wave functions of different widths (corresponding to the differences between the two teams), that oscillate with different periods.

(From Wikipedia.)

This models the fact that in no football match the stronger team dominates *all the time*. There are two waves that are composed with basic powers to give current strength.

So if the underdog strikes when his wave is high and the opponent’s low…

Football Drama's Modding Plan

So I got this email yesterday from a beta tester friend and I know he is a great supporter and expert of Napoli FC. So I thought "Pity that there are no Napoli references in Football Drama" and then "It's so easy to change teams because all the configurations are not hard coded" and then "Wow its all already built for... modding!".

So then I woke up with the full plan: in the game first development patch after release (after the inevitable first release day patches of panic) I will add (only for desktop versions) a check at startup for a folder of customizations - if enough people ask for it.

You will be able to mod all the team's features, and also the commentary, and even the set of cards and their consequences! Because it is all in CSV files.
Together with that, I will need to add in the app settings:
- Show the mod's folder path.
- Enable a "no personal narrative" mode so that the narrative will focus on the championship and the surrounding narrative events (meeting the other coach, president and press).

All this is actually feasible because of how Football Drama has been built in order to make it easy to test & debug.

"A mod (short for "modification") is an alteration by players or fans of a video game[1] that changes one or more aspects of a video game, such as how it looks or behaves. Mods may range from small changes and tweaks to complete overhauls, and can extend the replay value and interest of the game." Wikipedia.

So we found out that we were releasing Football Drama the same day that FIFA 20 opens for preorder... they should be scared that we'll obscure them on media!
Or.
Well.
Or maybe not.
...
Ok, we changed the release date - now its September 18th.
