Forest of Evil

Forest of Evil; Now Free To Play

Hello Steam Community,

We here, at Brown Studios, are a small indie team who mainly created our game "Forest of Evil" for fun; and because we wanted to make a game in the retro platforming style that we like to play.

Once finished, we thought the game was entertaining and challenging enough that perhaps other people would like to play it to. So, we of course made the decision to publish it on "Steam"; so that others could have the opportunity to find it, and play it.

The game was first released on June 21, 2019 for the initial purchase price of 2.99 USD. As some of you may know, or perhaps may not know, a small publishing fee is required to place games onto Steam. It also takes further time and money to develop a game on any level. Our game is not super huge, but neither was our price; and we often had discount times of up to 50% off.

Well, it has been almost 4 years now since the game was first launched onto "Steam"; and we have managed to gather enough money from it to break even on the production costs and fees.

So, we have made the decision as a team that "Forest of Evil" should now be available for FREE!

This way everyone who wants to download and play the game will have the opportunity to do so without a pay obstacle.

No other changes will come from this switch; just that if you or your friend were interested in playing the game, but weren't sure if it was worth paying for, well now you can try it out without having to worry about that!

As for all the players who did purchase our game; to you we offer a Very Big and Heart Felt THANK YOU!! Your combined purchases not only allowed us to release the game onto "Steam" without losing any money in the process, but also gave us a sense of validation as video game creators that is truly priceless! Having been avid video game players for years, and always wanting to know what it was like on the other side of that screen, this experience has been a well-enjoyed check-mark on our bucket-lists!

So, with that, we again offer a Big THANK YOU to everyone who saw our game and thought it looked good enough to put money towards purchasing; as well as a Thank You to Valve for existing and providing a place for us to offer our game to the world. And to all you new people who may find this game in the future, or who knew about it but hadn't decided to purchase it yet, we say; Welcome, Come On In, It's FREE Now!

A Few Fixes And Changes

Hello! We have a few fixes and changes for you in this update.

Since Forest of Evil's release on Steam the development team has noticed and worked on a few minor glitches which probably hasn't affected most of you but are important to fix none-the-less.

These Include:

-If you exit back to the main menu from inside a level of the game and then go to the "controls" page it will freeze the game. (This Should Be Fixed)

-If you have the invincibility shield or rosary on and playing its music when you enter a boss arena the boss music will start alongside the rosary or shield's music but once the rosary or shield's music stops the boss music will also stop and you end up hearing the normal level music instead. (This Should Be Fixed)

-The opening scene at the start of a new game will sometimes freeze. You could always press the skip button to continue into the game, but if the opening dialogue froze then you didn't get to experience the initial setup for the story. (This Should Be Fixed)

-Various other minor fixes

Also, the development team has decided upon a few gameplay changes that we wish to implement. Some of them will make the game a little easier for some, some of them will make the game a little harder for some, all of them will hopefully make the game a little more interesting and enjoyable for all.

These Include:

-Food Barrels will now always drop a random armor if the player has full health when breaking the barrel. This should make getting through some levels a little easier and add a layer of strategy for getting through the harder levels as there is now incentive to try your hardest not to take damage since you will have a chance to get extra armor points if you have full health when you reach that next food barrel.

-Various enemies and bosses now have status effects on their attacks. For example: the dart frog now shoots poison darts which slow you down and the spirit wisps now inflict a curse upon you when they hit you which causes you to be unable to attack for a period of time. There is more but we'll let you discover them as you play the game!

-Hard Mode is now a proper Hard Mode as the mode is not only harder due to the status effects on some enemy and boss's attacks which affect the normal game mode as well, but also the Hard Mode bosses now have slightly different attacks which means that you'll have to change-up and adapt how you defeat them. For some bosses it may be as simple as increased speed in their attacks which changes the rhythm of the battle and gives you fewer chances to strike back, for others it may also mean a slight difference in how they attack. For example: The Graveyard Floating Skeletal Head now rains blue fire down from above as well as using its normal blue fire attacks to each side making it much more difficult to defeat him!

Thank You to all who have played our game and we hope that you will enjoy the changes in this update!

A Few Fixes

- It has come to our attention that some people are booting up the game with
"Fastest Graphics" as the default graphics setting which causes the game to
look horrible and also causes some glitches. We have now put some code in
which should make "Fantastic Graphics" the default graphics setting. If this
causes your game to lag then simply reduce the setting to "Good Graphics"
in the Unity Launch window that first pops up when you launch the game.
There is little visual difference between "Good" and "Fantastic" but the game
will run smoother on "Good" for some computers.

- We have added a toggle for the mouse. By default the mouse is locked to
the center of the screen, can not interact with anything, and is invisible. This
works best for how our game works but for those of you who would like to
have the option of a freely moving mouse you can now hit Q to toggle the
mouse on and off. To save the toggle-state simply toggle the mouse on or
off and then walk through a scene change. After the scene change the
mouse's toggle-state will be saved to whatever it was when the scene changed
and will remain that way even after shutting down the game and relaunching it
unless you change it again.

- We have also fixed a few minor glitches.

Forest of Evil is Released!

Forest of Evil is finally released and purchasable on Steam! An indie 2D side-scrolling plat-former developed over the course of approximately 1 year by a team of 3 brothers. Having been mostly self-taught this is the team's second attempt at making a video game, though its first fully released game. The other game, "HereAfter", can also be found on Steam in the Early Access state. We hope that all who experience this game will find it to be a fun bit of nostalgia bringing up memories of pixel games from the 1990s, though perhaps with a little more modern feel. We also hope, that people won't throw too many chairs or computer screens while playing this game as it is not intended to be easy by any means! Remember, it's a game, so just have fun! Good Luck to everyone on defeating The Night! :)
