About Modding in Founders’ Fortune



First things first: For Alpha 8, the Early Access release, Founders’ Fortune doesn’t expose any modding features. However, recently there has been a lot of discussion about modding Founders’ Fortune within and outside our community. So with the release around the corner, I wanted to give you a quick look into what the future might bring if it turns out people are into the game.

Making our Dev Tools available to Modders




Our world is semi-randomly generated. We use the WorldPiece Editor to create the building blocks for the random world. You can use it to make goblin villages, custom resource deposits, and interesting landscape features.

During development, we not only spent our time making the game, but we also made some tools that make content creation a lot easier. This includes tools to change the landscape, make new furniture, and integrate your own assets in the game. At the moment these tools have some quirks here and there because they were made to be used internally by the devs.

However, it wouldn’t take a lot of work, to finish up the user interface, make it a little more accessible and provide these tools as standalone applications or even as part of Founders’ Fortune itself.

We have released these kind of tools for our community before. Below you can see a screenshot of the Translator’s Dashboard. We’re very thankful that almost all of our translations were made possible by the community. In the beginning, it was important for people to check their translations in the game, so we quickly made a special “translator’s mode”, where the translators could replace the game’s text with their own translation.

This special mode also featured a dashboard which gave you additional information about mistakes in your translation (if it was unreadable by the game) or your progress in percent.


Our community translators use the “Translator’s Dashboard” to check their translation for errors and completion.

Using Furniture Definition Files to make Modding easier



A lot of objects in Founders’ Fortune is defined as “furniture” that the colonists can interact with. To make the integration of new Furniture as easy as possible, these objects are not specifically programmed.

For example, this is an excerpt of the definition for our crystals, which can be mined for research:

Some configurations can take time, like defining where exactly colonists can stand when they interact with the piece of furniture. For these tasks, we have made another tool, the “Furniture Editor”. In the furniture editor, you can place visual markers that indicate where colonists need to stand in order to interact with any given furniture. From these markers, the tool generates.json configurations which you can use in your configuration file.


Our “Furniture Editor” provides you with the tools to generate some of the necessary configurations with a graphical interface.

Integrating with our code



Some mods are only possible if you dig deeper and interface directly with our game code. Our game is made with Unity and therefore it’s written in C#. It’s possible and explicitly allowed to decompile the game code for educational or modding purposes.

If there is a lot of interest, we can provide more infrastructure to load custom code and allow deeper modifications of the game code.

As a test run, we built the supporter packages as mods



Interest in mod support has been growing, so as a first test run, we implemented our Supporter Packages as mods. The supporter packages are small pieces of DLC available on our website, which we made as a thank you to our greatest supporters.

These packages feature custom furniture, armor, and hats. In order to make them usable ingame, we had to make an external asset loading procedure which we could also use to load mods.


The Gold Supporter Package contains a little extra furniture set as a thank you for our Supporters. In order to test mod support, the package was made as developer-authored mod.

Welcome - Have some links and find find our community



Hello and welcome to our lovely little base builder Founders' Fortune. Since we put up our Steam page, a lot of new players have started to look into the game, so I thought it's time for a small introduction.

First things first: There is already an active community around Founders' Fortune. Have a look at the following links and see what you prefer.

The most active community is on our Discord Server.

We also have a Forum, which is pretty active, but is better suited for longer posts.

The subreddit is not active, but you're welcome to change that ;)

Our Twitter is not a place for community interaction, but gives you a sneak peak at new content from time to time.

I have no idea how busy the community hub is going to get after release, but we'll be sure to stop by!


This is how we got here



We're two guys from Germany and we've been working on the Founders' Fortune since mid-2017. In the beginning, we were only able to work on evenings and weekends, but we had to stop development during 2018.

However, we've been making games in our free time for seven years now and we thought it's time to take it up a notch, make something great and seriously publish it. That's why, in January 2019, we went on to develop Founders' Fortune full time.

Since then, we've been able to release updates much more rapidly. Up until recently, we put these releases on the internet for free which helped us to get a lot of useful feedback early on. This feedback has been put to use to refine the gameplay systems. We've made a lot of progress, but the feedback never stops. And of course, that's a good thing :)

Alpha 7 was the first version we put on sale on our website. Even though the exact same version was available for free, there have been many kind people who wanted to support the development and bought it anyways. Thanks!

Now, with Alpha 8, we're taking a leap forward and are for the first time making Founders' Fortune available to a larger community. We hope all of you enjoy the game and keep the feedback coming :)

In the future, we plan to continue working on Founders' Fortune. However, the amount of content we can add depends on the success of the game in Early Access. If players don't like the game, we'll start polishing the systems we have during the next months and make the current experience feel complete.

If Founders' Fortune gets a lot of support, we'll start introducing large new systems. We typically don't make any promises, but we're thinking about adding second floors, animals, new islands, and new factions. See more on the Roadmap on our website.

Preparing for the Steam Release on July 19th



We're currently putting the finishing touches on a few systems. It's not going to be perfect, because it's Early Access and we're more focusing on adding new features than polishing button animations, but our players have been more than satisfied with how little issues the game has, so we think we've been doing an ok job at walking that tightrope.
