Gaia

Alpha-2.0.11, German localization

This patch is going live today on the Beta branch. Default branch will be updated tomorrow or later this week!

* Fixed a secondary inventory panel opening randomly when a building finished materializing

* Prevented the trade pod from leaving while you’re still levitating or are very close to it

* Items inside generators and turrets no longer show on the trade screen

* Fixed the time of day of a new game to actually work as intended

* Added a new feature: Assemblers are now returned to your inventory if you destroy them yourself. Useful for moving buildings.

* Added a helper tip indicating how you can destroy buildings. A ‘+’ indicates that you’ll get the building back in your inventory and a ‘-’ indicates that you won’t.

* Localized the controls menu

* Introduced in game German localization. Big thanks to Spacefinder and Norcane82!

* Adjusted some prices

* Fixed a small translation issue with the dropship description

* Added an the ability to toggle the autosave feature on or off

* Added a visual indicator during autosaving

* Increased autosave interval from 10 to 20 minutes

Character customization is still ongoing. I expect to be done within a week or 2 depending on how many more bug reports we’re getting!

Alpha-2.0.10 patch

More bug fixes going live both on the beta and default branches! Thank you again all for your feedback and sorry about the announcements spam. I assure you, I won't be announcing patches twice every day until the end of days. Only now when the game is a little unstable!

* Doubled the rifle bullet speed

* Added 25% more glowtubes and 10% more bubble roots to a world spawn

* Fixed the trade pod’s beacon being stuck in the air. Current save files who have that bug will sadly keep the beacon but hey, free beacon

* Fixed the trade pod’s beacon text

* Fixed the trade pod navigation sometimes failing.

* A few other technical fixes!

German translation now done, but I still need to adjust some UI before I shove it into the game. Expect it to be in the game in the next patch! A big thank you to the 2 volunteers who have localized the German language!

Alpha-2.0.9 patch

New patch going live on both the default and beta branch!

* AI footsteps volume levels are now adjusted based on the distance from the player

* Fixed a bug with placing ceiling panels over window blockers

* Fixed a rare issue with the toilet and sink not working properly

* Fixed the flash light and the perspective key mapping bugs.

* Reduced the falling animation glitch when running uphill. It still happens when you try and run at very high angles though

In other news, I started working on character customization and it looks very promising! Bear in mind it's a work in progress! Extremely not finished:

Alpha-2.0.8 patch

Hey guys, first I want to say thank you for all the feedback! It's obvious that the game is a little grindy so this patch is going to address that issue a bit. As always, this patch just went live on the Beta branch on Steam. The default branch will be updated tomorrow!

* Cabinets can now be built on the ground and without requiring the Furniture decryption

* Furniture assembler can now be built from the start, without needing atomic disks or decryption

* Fixed a visual bug with the furniture assembler

* All ores (copper, crysoprase, bloodstone, gold, diamond and onyx) are now stackable. This might change again in the future depending on more feedback.

* Fixed the quit button when you die in ironman

* Increased the quality of some textures, mainly the multi tool and rifle

* Increased ammo amount on start from 100 to 300. Also increased its stack size from 75 to 100

* Removed some ghost key bindings

* Remapped some default controls: ‘K’ is now for sleeping, ‘L’ is for light and ‘V’ for changing views. Those of you who already own the game shouldn’t be affected by this change.

* Decreased the rate at which needs go down by around 25%.

* Fixed a bug with keymapping not serializing. It used to not serialize if you quit the control menu without pressing the ‘Done’ button.

* Fixed a bug with random weather on start. Every new game will now always start with the same weather and will randomize as the game progresses.

LAUNCH

After around 3’000 hours of development, Gaia is finally in Early Access!!! If you’re undecided about buying the game, check out the new trailers and screenshots on the store page and make sure you read the store page itself.

Please also take a look at the package list to see what there is in store for Gaia in the future. In short, packages are like DLCs… but free! What’s more is that YOU get to decide the order in which packages are implemented, as well as have a say in how they are implemented. More info in that link.

The game is quite moddable in its current state. You can add any new type of item, edit existing items, add or edit buildings, textures, weather etc. You can also literally run your own custom code, whatever that may be, in Gaia. That means you could put quests, zombies or any other crazy ideas you may have!

This is a 100% indie game made by one person. There will be a few more thousand hours of development going into Gaia, so please leave any feedback you may have because it WILL be taken into account! Pinkie promise.

GAMEPLAY VIDEOS

Here are some people trying out the game on Youtube in no particular order:

Shay did a 2 hour gameplay livestream and uploaded her VOD. Funny vid and you can also watch her learn the hard way not to spend all your ammo as soon as you land:

Here we have the Wanderer doing a 1h gameplay vid with legacy clouds on and some very educational stuff (PS: if you're reading this Wanderer, you can build cabinets to store stuff but you need to decode Furniture first):

Jimmy did a 30 minute, no commentary first look video here:

As always, the dedicated Garies checked out some of the new updates in a 30 minute video. He's been here since the beginning and made many, many pre-alpha videos, so give him some love guys! Check out his channel if you want to see how the game has progressed over the course of this past year.

One last thing. If you guys feel beautiful today and like the game, please help spread the word! The indie competition is real on Steam these days, with around 90 games released this week alone!

Launch time revealed!

Hey guys, just want to let you know that Gaia will be released into Early Access at 12pm EST (4 pm GMT) this Thursday!

It's that time of the year again when you just gotta tell your grandma, grandpa, kids, parents, close friends, acquaintances, neighbors, cashiers, waiters, people who work in call centers, teachers, classmates and coworkers about that cool new upcoming Steam game... Why? You just gotta!

See you on all on Thursday!

2 weeks left! Technical update

Hey guys! Only 2 weeks left until the game comes out in EA! I don't know about your guys, but I'm excited as hell.

I've been very busy working on the technical aspect of the game these past several days. This includes tutorial improvements, memory leaks, small glitches, bugs and other small optimizations here and there. The game's version is now at Alpha-2.0.5 in the Beta branch.

In other news, there's now going to be an option to buy the Gaia OST separately. The main purpose of that is to provide a chance to people who like Joel's music to download it onto their mobies or other devices so they can listen whenever and wherever they want to. It's also there if you beautiful peeps want to further support Joel and I with our projects!

In other other news, Steam has just approved the release! There's a shiny new green button that's just waiting to be pressed! So why wait another 2 weeks you may wonder? Well, there's still a bit of testing and improvements left to do. For example, just today, I've played for about 6 hours and I realized that some tooltips go offscreen, some labels are hard to read when they're completely red and so on. This polishing stuff takes a long time and to be honest, it won't be 100% polished in 2 weeks. But hopefully it will be better than most EA games out there.

20 days left! New trailers, mod guide published

So close to the release date! So the store page has been changed with the most up to date information, including system requirements, trailers, screenshots and description.

Joel worked on the music for the trailer while I did the video aspect of it. We hope you'll like it!

In other news, here is the modding guide for Gaia, for those who are interested already in some modding.

How will modding work? We'll be using Unity as our environment. There are quite a few good reasons why we chose to go with this option instead of making our own editor.

Most important one is that it is one of the easiest solutions and doesn't require us to spend months creating our own editor. Another important reason is that Gaia was made with Unity, so having access to this powerful engine means that you'll be able to mod literally everything with relative ease. Unity is a multi-million dollar engine, something we could never hope to make ourselves, so having access to it would be very beneficial.

You can edit, add or create your own models, AI, UI, terrains, animations, script logic, audio, custom events and much more directly into the editor! However, just like with any other solution, this one has its drawbacks too. The biggest drawback is that even though you'll be having access to the Gaia base code and IntelliSense if you're using Visual Studio or MonoDevelop, you won't be able to run any Gaia code inside your modding project to make sure it's working. This is because Unity doesn't support modding officially. So, just like most other games, you'll have to create your mod, export it, then start up the game and test your code involving Gaia base code in the runtime application.

Other than that though, there are no other major limitations. We haven't tested all the possibilities of course, because they are endless, but this is what we gathered from the 2 mods we made so far.

For anyone interested, the first mod introduces a magic potato which can quench thirst and hunger while the second mod introduces that + a potato launcher turret, which throws exploding potatoes at enemies and doesn't consume any energy. OP we know.

That's it for today, happy gaming!

25 days left! Upcoming store page update

Hey everyone! We're almost there! I've been a little busy patching up the game but I got some time in making a few gifs, updating the store page with the most up to date information and finished the trailer. Next week, I'll be posting the trailer and new screenshots on Steam, but for now, you can watch a few uploaded gifs on the store page. You might notice how much they differ from the trailer and other screenshots which are from last year, at least in terms of UI.

In other news, a very cool dude has volunteered to translate the game in German and he's about 1/4th done. If anyone else would like to translate it into their own language, let me know! I'll be putting your name in the credits as a thank you.

I'll also soon contact youtubers so they can put up some new gameplay videos. If you yourself have a sizeable following, let me know. I'll be featuring your videos on this page.

33 days left! Alpha 2.0.0 and music

Alpha 2 brings lots of new goodies into the game. We now have localization, music, new items, Steam Workshop, Steam achievements and partial support for mods! You can read more about these new features here because this post is about music!

I'm glad to announce that Gaia finally got its own OST (original sound tracks). We have 7 songs right now, 2 of which are 'raid' songs and the rest are chill/exploratory type of songs. If you've ever played Rimworld and you liked those songs that played whenever you got attacked, then you'll most likely like these ones as well.

And if you've ever played Subnautica or Surviving Mars and liked their tracks, then you'll most likely like the other 5 songs as well!

The guy who made these songs is called Joel Grant, a very talented person. You can find his page here to listen to some of his soundtracks. You'll be able to buy the soundtracks he made for Gaia here on Steam if you really like what he made!

We partnered up to make music for Gaia, now and in the future hopefully. Next week or the one after, I'll be posting up a new trailer and pictures on the store page and Joel will be making a custom track just for that.
