Please play the game and let us know what you think! Gem Hunter has more content in its campaign than the vast majority of other VR titles in its price range, totaling 2-4 hours in solo story mode. We focused on excellent content and solid gameplay mechanics over high-end graphics and flare, which based on statistical analysis appears to have turned off potential purchasers from trying the game in the first place. We hope that with more reviews from people who have actually played and experienced the game, this can be countered. Your honest review is much appreciated.
Today's Update is the full, finished game!
I'm excited to announce that Gem Hunter is finished! The remainder of Early Access will be spent stitching together a killer launch trailer that shows just how story oriented this game is, and polishing the player experience with various small updates here and there. We expect to transition to full release earlier than May 1st's initial estimation! At launch, the price of the game will go up to $9.99.
It's been a little less than two months since we began development on this project. Taking very few days off, and with work days sometimes hitting the 16 hours mark, it's been at times a grueling marathon. But in the end, we are extremely proud of the result, and are happy to bring one of the first ever story-driven VR platformers to you earlier than expected.
Details about the Finished Game
The complete game has 28 Diamonds to collect in 10 full Stages. There are 4 Boss fights, and lots of characters to talk to and get Ship upgrades from. There are nearly a dozen Steam Achievements, 3 unique Ship upgrades (The Shield Module, Dash Module, and Spring Boost Module), and 5 Ammo types to collect. The total casual play-through time of Gem Hunter's main story averages 2-4 Hours.
May's Speedrunning Giveaway
Since the game is now complete, the month of May will host the first real Speedrun giveaway! The top 100% and Any% category record-holders will each receive $50 Steam giftcards on May 31st.
Massive Story Arc/Content Update coming in the next couple days!
I've been holding off on updates so that this next one could be huge. It adds the entirety of the 2nd story arc and refines quite a lot of the first. After defeating Dezravella in the Neon Outpost, this new arc pits you against her sister, Petrichora, who has taken refuge in the shadows of the Undergrowth, a place where souls come to coalesce. Things get real when she, the wisest of the three Witch Sisters, begins to shed light on the true villains of the story, and what makes you, the Gem Hunter, so special amidst all of the strife.
<*>Two Full New Stages: the Undergrowth, and Innerworkings.
<*>Major Story developments
<*>New Ammo type: Big Shot
<*>UI and Ship Control refinement
<*>Two new Enemy types
Shaping up - Major Graphics / Performance improvements / Dezravella's New Look!
What this Update Boils Down To
Aside from the remaining content we'll be adding in over the next month before full release, gameplay-wise Gem Hunter is finally getting to the polish stage. With both Controller and Headset locomotion fully implemented, major upgrades to performance and graphics quality, tightened Hovercraft controls, and a properly paced Tutorial level, the game is even easier than ever to pick up and enjoy.
$50 Speedrunning Giveaway
Gem Hunter is designed to be a speedrunning game. That said, whoever has the fastest in-game Any% Leaderboard time by 11:59PM, April 30th, will win a $50 Steam giftcard. Get running, Gem Hunters!
The Evil Witch Dezravella
Our beloved Early Access villain now looks as fearsome as she is to fight. The story also eludes to Dezravella's sisters now as well, whose story arcs are currently being implemented. You should be able to see some of their new content starting next week.
Update - New Stage + $50 Steam Giftcard giveaway
$50 Steam Giftcard Giveaway
At the end of April, we are giving away a $50 Steam Giftcard for whoever holds the Speedrunning Leaderboard World Record for Any%. Currently I (the programmer) hold the record of 10:09. This is extremely beatable. So give it a go once you've beaten the game casually!
Gem Hunter has just updated to v1.0.1
New Stage: Snowy Slope Volcano!
New Ammo Type: Rapid Pulse
Settings screen updated & refined. You can now choose Graphics level Low, Medium, and High.
Performance tweaks: SS scales with frame rate (Adaptive Quality)
Ship control tweaks, added haptic feedback, etc. The game is generally being refined in little ways across the board.
Don't get attached to your save games! Each time there is a new update to the game (especially one that adds a new stage), it will require a save game reset which will be handled automatically. This isn't because I'm too lazy to program a save compatibility system, but rather because each update contains so many tweaks to gameplay and various pre-existing stages that it's unfair to allow existing saves to finish and place on the Leaderboards having already gone through a portion of the game.
But it'll be worth it! The new stage is great fun. It's called Snowy Slope Volcano. Think Snowy Snowy Mountain in Super Mario 64, but with traps and no penguin.
