What’s that? Most of you don’t know what we’re talking about? Well that’s ok - what it really means for you is that with this update, we will be introducing you all to a new limited-time event where you’ll be able to get your hands on a new item: the much-loved semla! In-game, this food item will quickly restore a small amount of health. Grab them while you can as they’ll be available from 10:00 CET Tuesday, February 25 until 10:00 CET Monday, March 2!
In terms of other additions in this Update, you’ll see a change to the Alpine Unrest expansion - we’ve gone back and packed in a little bit more fun. There is a new Challenge Tree for expansion owners to work through, including some radical rewards in the form of musical emotes!
One improvement we’d like to call out is an effort to give the game a bit of animation polish by updating some of the animations for other players in multiplayer - most notably their idle and running animations. From now on you’ll see characters looking a bit less stiff and instead look more natural.
And like usual, below you can find a list of bug fixes, with some important crash fixes in there. As we’ve previously mentioned we’re digging more into crashes recently and are trying to address them as fast as we can. Currently we’re rolling out some new processes internally that should help us get a better picture of the situation so we can address things better. So please share as much detail with us as possible if you experience a crash!

Letter from the Devs - February 14
Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you out there!
We’re in the midst of wrapping up our work on the February Update and we wanted to give you a little taste of what to expect. We’ll let you know a date as we get closer, but for now we hope these tidbits will suffice.
Firstly, let’s talk about crashes. As you saw shortly after the January Update, we released a PC hotfix to clamp down on crashes that were more prevalent on that platform and were causing headaches for everyone. Today, we’re happy to say that those PC fixes will be coming to consoles as well. While they won’t have the same impact, seeing as the issues were more common on PC, they will still help with stability. Speaking of the consoles, we also identified and fixed a PS4 specific crash that was causing a lot of the ones you reported.
There will also be other fixes in the update, but since crashes are more impactful to everyone’s experience, we wanted to make sure to start off our letter discussing them. To be clear though, this doesn’t mean we’ve fixed all crashes or that we’re done trying to stomp them out, just that we’re continuing to focus on this area. As always, your feedback and bug reports help us get these under control!
So, while we are on the topic of things being in the game that we don’t want there, let’s talk about some of the odd things you’ve seen appear in-game after the last Update. Some keen eyed observers have noticed that various props have started showing up at previously explored areas or behind some doors. Just like with any game that is constantly being worked on, things that are work-in-progress can sometimes slip through our checks unexpectedly. Sometimes these things are ideas we’re testing out or us setting the stage for something later. Because we don’t want to ruin the surprise for everyone, we won’t comment on what you’re seeing, but would rather remove it so as to not cause confusion if we decide to pursue a different route. That’s kind of our way of saying, don’t read too much into anything - things can and do change during development!
We hope you have a great day with loved ones or friends; be it over a nice dinner or blowing up some machines together - either way, take care until next time!

January Update - Hotfix
Hi all. We've just released a PC hot-fix to address a large source of the crashes that players have been experiencing recently. It's related to how we calculated the serial numbers of Rivals when they were created. The code wasn't properly incrementing numbers, which meant that sometimes when Rivals were spawned the game could generate an error that resulted in a crash. As time went on, the likelihood of this happening would increase as more Rivals were spawned in your world - ultimately guaranteeing a crash.
With this fix we've tackled an issue that we saw was accountable for roughly 30% of all crashes players are experiencing on PC.
While not as severe on consoles, we will roll this update out on those platforms alongside our next update.
Thanks, and we hope to see you in our stream later today (16:00 CET @ twitch.tv/generationzerogame)! //The Generation Zero Team
Letter from the Devs - January 31
Hello again everyone!
Already one month down in 2020 but plenty more to go. Earlier this week we pushed out an Update to squish some bugs, and to re-launch the Winter Event we ran so more people could have a shot at getting some fancy outfits for their characters. As we mentioned in those Patch Notes, it wasn’t a large update for us as we’re just back from the holidays. But during the month, and into February, we’ll be working on some new stuff that we’ll talk about later as well as, of course, focusing on yet more bug-fixing.
Speaking of, after our most recent patch we saw a bit of extra pickup around performance issues with the game (ie. crashes). Given what you’re telling us and the new info we’re seeing in our crash reporting, we are putting yet more resources into finding, and then fixing, these types of problems. There has already been some headway into this area for upcoming updates, but some issues may take a bit longer to sort through and fix.
That aside, we’re glad to see many of you are enjoying the continual fixes we are pushing out - particularly Mission updates. These are important to us so we’ll keep on tracking your feedback, our data, and our testing to make sure we can catch and fix these as soon as they pop up!
So, that’s January down - and thanks for being with us! Look forward to more from us in this space like always. See you next time!

January Update Now Live
Hi all,
We hope everyone is enjoying 2020 so far! A big thanks to everyone who was providing feedback over the holiday period - we learned a lot and found several bugs with your help. All of this will help us continue to make the game even better.
January has finally kicked into full gear and we are back in business with another Update. Although this month is light on content, we wanted to make sure we got some bug fixes out to you, especially as some of the them were quite annoying and things that you flagged for us.
Additionally we’ve taken a balance pass on Rivals dropping Experimental Weapons. We’ve seen both from our data and what everyone is saying that we needed to tweak the drop mechanics to be more in line with the rarity / power that Experimental Weapons are meant to portray. To that end we made 3 notable changes:
Reduced the chance of Rivals being generated by Machines killing players and increased the chance for players killing Machines in a region.
Experimental Weapons drop chance should now be correctly tied to Rival level and Machine type. The lowest chance is now a Level 1 Prototype Class Hunter and the highest is a Level 4 Apocalypse Class Tank.
Restricted Experimental Weapons to only drop to players who are level 25 and above.
Primarily we saw that Experimental Weapons were dropping too often, even at lower levels, and it was creating an experience where players would get the best weapons very early on and it would make the game too easy. We want players to still have a chance at getting them and using them, but not so early on that it damages the experience. To be clear though - if you are below level 25 and have an Experimental Weapon, you will still be able to use it. Please let us know your feedback about how these changes feel once you start fighting Rivals after the patch.
But before we get to the bug fixes, a quick note that we’ll be re-running our Holiday Event from 10:00 CET today until 10:00 CET on Monday, February 3rd. We had a lot of new players come in during the holidays that may have missed out so consider this your last chance - be sure to not miss out!

Letter from the Development Team - January 10th
Hey everyone - we’re back! And welcome to our first check-in for 2020!
After the break the team is now in the office, rested, full of holiday food, and already hard at work on the coming improvements and additions to Generation Zero.
Now of course the holidays didn’t mean that we disappeared entirely! We’ve had our eyes open over the past weeks, noting down feedback and information from our veteran players, as well as eagerly seeing what GZ new-comers have to say about the game. We’ll take that feedback and start to incorporate it into our future updates - but before we get to that we’ve already planned something for this month.
So what can you expect in the January Update? Primarily bug-fixing, and a little extra surprise we’ll cover nearer the time. Now please do note that this update is going to be a little smaller than what we’ve done in prior months - due to the holiday period. With the way development works, when we release something, you generally receive the product of the prior month or so’s work. As a result, holiday time-off tends to affect the following month’s release more than the month the holidays take place in. But that said, every day we pick up more steam towards all of the rest of the awesome updates you can expect this year!
Keep your eyes peeled for the normal patch notes, and some extra information about the surprise a little later in the month. Until then, hope to catch you all in next week’s stream!
//The Generation Zero Team
Holiday Event Now Live!
Happy Holidays everyone!
It’s been quite the journey from when we started back in March with the launch of Generation Zero. Since then, we’ve done a lot with the game - from bug fixes, to new features, to an expansion - all to create a great experience that we all can enjoy.
Admittedly we started off a bit rocky at launch, but due in large part to your feedback we continually made efforts to mend those errors. We’ve taken a steady, methodical approach with our updates, as we wanted to make sure we got things right first time, rather than rush out rough solutions. This has been our continued approach to challenges, and something we will keep aiming for with every release. That said, we aren’t perfect, but we’re not taking unnecessary risks either when it comes to fixing annoying bugs. And based on the feedback that has been coming in of late, we are pleased to see that our efforts have been paying off - specifically in the example of the main mission blockers we had early on.
When it comes to the new things we’ve added, we’ve tried to strike a balance between what you’re looking for and what we think the game needs in order to succeed. Ideally we find areas where those two things overlap so that the game can really shine! One example of that was the Rival system. You were looking for more things to do and more interesting rewards, whereas we wanted a system we could build on that would engage you in new and interesting ways.
With Alpine Unrest, we started to push more into areas where these things overlap. Based on feedback from a variety of places (forums, reviews, surveys, etc.) we were able to look closely at what was working and what wasn’t. Many of the ways in which we tried things in the expansion were directly called out as potential areas of improvement previously. Things like NPCs, Mission variety, and the fullness of the world, were all things we tackled in order to provide a better experience. All of these aspects we will evaluate and learn from so that we can continue to improve the game across the board.
We hope you’ve enjoyed all the updates we’ve made to Generation Zero so far - and you can expect more from us in the coming year! Nothing to share just yet, but we have plenty of ideas for things we want to put in the game in 2020 and onwards.
Lastly, as we head into the holiday period, the team will start rolling out of the office soon which means no more updates from us before the end of the year. However - please enjoy our Holiday Celebration Event that starts today. Get out there, hunt some Rivals, and grab those sweet new threads!
If you want your friends to join and provide backup, now’s also a perfect opportunity as we have sales running on all platforms.
Thank you all so much for joining us in the world of Östertörn, enjoy the holidays, and we’ll see you in 2020!
Letter from the Development Team - December 6
Happy December everyone!
We hope those of you who grabbed Alpine Unrest are having fun exploring Himfjäll and uncovering even more of what’s transpired since the machines first appeared. For us, this expansion was the culmination of our aims to create a new experience by building on the base game combined with taking on much of the feedback you’ve had about the base game experience since launch. And based on your feedback so far, it seems we’ve hit pretty close to the mark!
That said, this release wasn’t without its challenges. We had an issue that caused problems for select players - specifically they couldn’t start the expansion mission chain. We’ve since hotfixed that issue as we want to make sure everyone is able to experience the content as intended.
During the upcoming weeks, we will continue to focus on listening to your input and feedback, be it about things you like, things we can improve, bugs, and more. Together, we’re moving this game in the direction we all want. As this expansion was a large undertaking for us, we want to make sure you’re getting the most out of it and future updates!
More from us in the coming weeks as we head into the end of the year. Talk soon!

Alpine Unrest Hotfix
Hello everyone!
As some of you might have noticed that a few players were unable to start the new Alpine Unrest mission chain. Since noticed, a fix has been the GZ team's highest priority. We are now publishing a patch on PC to solve this problem.
Patch Details:
Alpine Unrest mission chain issue is now fixed.
If playing the final mission of Alpine Unrest (The Resistance) as the client of someone else's game, if you left during the mission then the mission would disappear from your Mission Log and you'd be unable to get it back.
- The GenerationZero team
Alpine Unrest Available Now!
Alpine Unrest is now available! Please read-on for the run down of changes in the Alpine Unrest expansion, as well as the changes and additions in our regular game update to all players.
Today we’re proud to put into your hands our first expansion, Alpine Unrest! In order to bring you this substantial Update to the game, we needed to give it the appropriate amount of time. Work started a few months ago and was done in parallel with the other Updates we brought your way - with the aim to help set the stage for this release.
There’s a lot to go over this month, and not all of it is limited to the paid expansion. We have bug fixes as usual, but on top of that we also have some goodies that are readily found in Alpine Unrest making their way to Östertörn in a limited fashion. All-in-all this is a major achievement for the team and we hope you enjoy playing it as much as we did making it.
Now… the island of Himfjäll awaits.
New Expansion: Alpine Unrest
Alpine Unrest takes place on the island of Himfjäll, off the east coast of Östertörn. This former popular ski destination is now abandoned, waiting for you to explore it for equipment, weapons, answers to new questions, and more. The town consists of several key locations, including towns with cafés and shops, caravan parking lots, military bases, ski slopes, a burning church, and the massive ski hotel Björntunet.
On top of that, the new island also continues the story of Generation Zero, providing new missions and introducing you to new allies - a group of survivors who have managed to survive the machine invasion against all odds. But we can’t introduce new friends without also giving you new enemies, and that is where the Apocalypse Class comes in. This new tier of machine are the deadliest to date, utilizing horrible weapons like flamethrowers and biochemical guns to try and take you down. So make sure to be extra careful when moving around the island.
Lastly a new expansion would be nothing without new weapons, clothes, collectibles, and achievements. Alpine Unrest introduces Machine Guns to the game: the KVM 59 Machine Gun and KVM 89 Squad Automatic Weapon. Both of these will be excellent tools for fighting back. Additionally we have new outfits, new things to collect and of course, new achievements to unlock. So keep an eye out, you never know where they might be found.
Additions
But that doesn’t mean you’re safe on the mainland. While the Apocalypse Class machines cover Himfjäll, some have made their way over to Östertörn and may appear in select areas of the mainland, should you be unlucky enough to run into them. Thankfully, the new Machine Gun class of weapons we’ve introduced can also be found by all players. There is a twist though, you’ll have to defeat some of the new machines to have a chance to get them. But, new challenges bring new rewards - good luck!
General bug fixes that will come as a standard "free" update alongside the launch of Alpine Unrest follow below:
Weapons
Fixed an issue where the firing mode of an automatic weapon would be reset after attaching a weapon mod
