Gigachess v1.26 Update | Xbox One gamepad support

XB1 gamepad support and a handful of minor QOL/technical improvements nudge Gigachess forward to v1.26 :)

  • Controller support extended to include Xbox One gamepads (custom bindings are shared between XB1 and X360 pads)
  • Mouseover tooltips will no longer appear if the game window loses focus

  • A bug preventing the Knight's Dungeon (Hint Unlocked) achievement from unlocking is fixed
  • With the spooky season now complete, the Halloween (Pumpkin Pawn) skin has been turned off by default for any new players on first launch
  • Some buggy behaviour concerning use of click-undo on a single piece that was involved in curing a Curse from a Pawn fixed
  • The layout of the Trapmine Pawn lure stage in Tutorial lesson 3 slightly altered to feature 2 Viper Pawns
  • A layering bug that placed the chain graphics signifying a locked route at the Brilliant Blitz level selector above the exit game prompt fixed
  • The EXE has been rebuilt to avoid the false positives from antivirus software that affected the original release of v1.26
  • A bug on the Knight's Dungeon level selection screen where the gold completion stars could incorrectly be set to states only possible in Puzzle Attack mode (birdie, eagle, albatross) fixed


XB1 gamepads would previously act very squirrely and this needed to be patched! They were basically unusable due to a bug in how the game was handling input from the left analog stick, causing the cursor to constantly drift. All better as of v1.26, and stuff behind the scenes regarding controller support is slightly cleaner now, too.

If anyone's interested in trying something new, there's a completely different puzzle thing I've been working on called ASTRALODE. It's an asteroid mining action puzzler where you launch clusters of mining tools into space rocks to harvest their shiny bits. There's a free version here on Steam featuring the game's arcade mode you can play now!

Gigachess OST Update | FLAC audio now available

With the big batch of changes Valve has made to how soundtracks work here on Steam, the Gigachess - Original Soundtrack DLC has been reconfigured to take advantage of all that good stuff! The OST is now available in FLAC format for anyone into lossless audio, you'll just need to make sure the "Download high-quality audio files" box is checked under the Additional Files section of your Music settings panel.

It's definitely a cool thing that soundtracks can now be picked up separately from their base games, and it's likewise nice that the Steam client has been updated to make accessing your music a little easier. There's a checkable Soundtracks category in the drop-down menu at the top of the library which enables soundtracks to be displayed alongside your games, software and such. Much better than having the music library be hidden away a couple menus deep! There's still a lot that Valve could do to improve the music player itself, but this is altogether an awesome update.

  • All Viper Survivor achievement added that unlocks upon reaching wave 10 when playing Endless mode with the All Viper mutator enabled
  • Spawncycle Survivor achievement added that unlocks upon reaching a hits target of 100 or more when playing Endless mode with the Spawncycle mutator enabled
  • Some minor optimizations made that trim down memory usage
  • A bug in Puzzle Attack mode where click-undoing a hero piece that captured a Pawn would fail to restore that Pawn to the board mode fixed
  • A bug in Puzzle Attack mode where Curses could be misapplied to Pawns upon resetting the stage fixed
  • The Drixxel Soft logo has been updated at the title menu

  • A bug where hero pieces with vertically-stacked starting positions could overlap following an All-Clear if the bottommost piece's starting square was occupied by a Blockade fixed

Happy Halloween! + Gigachess v1.24 Update

A handful of tweaks move Gigachess ahead to v1.24 in time for the Halloween season :)

  • The Halloween skin is now set as the default for first time players
  • A small change to Pawn behaviour made in the new Brilliant Blitz Level Pack has been brought over to the standard Puzzle Attack stages, improving how stacks of Pawns / Viper Pawns interact with each other in situations where they pile up in a column
  • Because of the above change, a handful of Puzzle Attack stage layouts have been gently tweaked and their solutions are likewise slightly altered
  • A bug where tooltips could appear at the party builder screen of Endless mode when mousing off-screen fixed
  • A bug where the help overlay introducing the step undo / redo controls that appears on first launch of Puzzle Attack mode could insist on reappearing fixed

In other Gigachess news, have a peek at how the standalone Knight's Dungeon Deluxe is looking at the moment! A couple of the major additions here are multi-touch squares and collectible SP that allow Shapeshifts to be purchased on demand rather than activated at set locations.

Gigachess v1.23 Update | Optimizations + Extended Tooltips

Major performance improvements, more detailed tooltips and a number of other additions move Gigachess to v1.23 :)

  • Longer descriptions of power-ups, Endless mode Mutators and other mechanics may now be easily viewed during gameplay when hovering over the appropriate objects, and a toggle control to turn this feature on/off is available from the drop-down menu (extended tooltips are switched on by default for all 1st time players)
  • A number of optimization tweaks have resulted in a significant performance boost, CPU + memory usage is roughly 40% better than v1.22
  • All of the hints in Knight's Dungeon mode have been updated and now include the official solution's ending square marked off in addition to the opening two moves for each stage
  • A clearer method for switching between mouse and gamepad has been added to the drop-down menu, a checkmark now appears next to the currently prioritized input method
  • A bug where having a gamepad connected could prevent you from switching back over to using the mouse for controlling gameplay fixed
  • A bug where the level preview for stage 28 in Knight's Dungeon mode displayed a slightly incorrect layout fixed

  • Auto-detection of connected gamepads can now be disabled after clicking the Mouse/KB button in the Input section of the drop-down menu, handy if you have an analog stick that likes to drift
  • A bug where clicking the step undo/redo buttons in Puzzle Attack mode while a power-up's placement grid was open could allow a glitchy use of this power-up fixed
  • Animated pointers added to the 3 Tutorial lessons to draw attention to the various elements needing to be interacted with and to help direct the usage of power-ups
  • Pawn attack range, viewable by either right-clicking a Pawn or enabling the Pawn Attack Range feature to the bottom left of the board, now features a menacing skull graphic to better communicate danger
  • Switching input priority to a connected gamepad now toggles the mouse cursor's custom styling off
  • A few fixes made to French language text
  • A bug where the Puzzle Attack step forward / step back buttons could not be used with a gamepad fixed
  • A bug in Puzzle Attack & Tutorial modes where click-undoing a hero piece after resetting the stage could incorrectly remove a curse from a Pawn fixed

The extended tooltips are long overdue, the significant performance boost should help the game run smoother on low-powered machines, and the most recent batch of Workshop Dungeons for Knight's Dungeon mode uploaded to the Gigachess Steam Workshop have beefed up the available game content just a little more :)

EDIT: oh yeah, and there's also this DLC level pack for Puzzle Attack mode that went live on August 2nd!

As you can see, "H" and "E" are split into two parts - under the current rules of Knight's Dungeon mode, the board shapes for these two characters are impossible to fully tour otherwise. A little awkward to have 'em chopped up like this, but hey, more stages!

Gigachess v1.22 Update | Party Performance Tracking

Tracking of personal best scores per party, expanded gamepad controls and assorted fixes move Gigachess forward to v1.22 :)

  • Performance grades in Endless mode achieved with any party configuration on any difficulty are now backed up internally, with the best grade achieved by the selected party displaying at the bottom right of the party builder screen
  • Beating a previously achieved grade with a party causes a special pop-up to appear on the scoring screen at the end of the run
  • A bug with the performance grade calculation where the grade displayed at the end of an Endless run might change unexpectedly after a moment's wait fixed
  • Automatic vertical centering of the game window on launch has been adjusted slightly to be better positioned
  • The right analog stick on many USB gamepads can now be used to control the cursor in addition to the left analog stick

Gigachess v1.20 Update | New Puzzle Attack Rank, Other Polish

'Albatross' rank in Puzzle Attack mode, a way to view a moved hero piece's previous position in a turn and more advance Gigachess ahead :)

  • The new rank of 'Albatross' is available in Puzzle Attack mode for any stage completed 3 turns under par
  • Right-clicking on a moved hero piece now displays a graphic on the square where the hero piece originated from in that turn
  • A highlight effect now appears on damaged Blockades when the Blockade grid is up to better indicate that they can be repaired
  • When Pawn attack ranges are set to visible, the effect now features a cycling pulse to make dangerous squares more apparent
  • The animation speed of the Hyper pulse effect has been slowed down a touch and the animation speed of the Queen-up pulse now matches that of the Hyper pulse
  • The Par value for Puzzle Attack stage 36 is now 6 (down from 8)
  • A bug where turn counting in Endless mode's performance grading could get thrown off when playing with the Spawncycle mutator enabled fixed
  • The order of the final two Tutorial stages have been flipped, so now the Curse stage precedes the Shieldguard stage (and the Shieldguard stage features a Cursed Pawn to test Curse removal via a Shieldguard with)
  • A bug where a couple of squares in the middle of the board could flash with an All-Clear fixed
  • A bug where the Viper Pawn downgrade flash effect wouldn't appear upon party demise fixed
