Gloam

Game engine change to Unity

We spent a year rebuilding Gloam in Unity, and this is the new playable Early Access update! Bugs are expected, but we will be pushing updates and fixes a lot faster now :)

We rebuilt Gloam in unity!

It has been more than a year since our last patch note, and a lot has happened since then. Some good, some sad, but I can assure you we've been working non-stop to get Gloam back on track!

Our last patch note was in March 2021, and sadly two weeks after our dear friend and lead developer Tanguy had posted it, he passed away. This was devastating for our small team of three, and so Thomas and I took a small break to think about our next course of action.

A lot of knowledge about how our game worked was lost at that moment, and after some consulting with outside developers, we ultimately decided that we needed to rebuild our game so that we had a full understanding of it ourselves. That being the case, we decided it would be a good opportunity to switch engines, and hopefully solve some performance issues we were having on mobile devices, a small silver lining.

It's now a year later, we've come a long way, and we're ready to launch a brand new playable Early Access version of Gloam!

Thank you for your patience, we really should have kept this page up-to-date with everything that was happening, but because of our difficult situation I hope you can forgive us :) From now on, written updates will come more often!

P.S:  We recently presented the game at Animasia, an anime and indie-game expo in Bordeaux, France, where we received a giant boost to our morale as we were voted the best indie game and best studio of the event! Now, all we need to do is work our butts off to prove they were right, haha!

TLDR: We spent a year rebuilding Gloam in Unity, and a new playable Early Access update is dropping today!

Patch note 0.10.7d

Once again, we've been hard at work squashing bugs and making our mini-games prettier! Here are all of our efforts resumed in text form!

- Runestones now require fewer ghosts to activate them when playing a match with a lower number of total players.
- Alive players will now hear a creepy sound when a ghost is stalking them, spooky!
- On the Magic Powder mini-game, both players now get the exact same sequence of colours. Balance has been restored to the universe.
- Boneyard mini-game is now less susceptible to auto-clicker attacks. Cheaters are lame.
- The shop now remembers your skin selections at least a little longer than a Goldfish could. (no fish were harmed during this process)
- Made our battle detection ray-tracing better. Mathematical!
- Moved servers to London, you can almost hear Big Ben ringing. Almost.
- A literal "metric butt ton" of mini-game visual effects have been updated, can you spot them all?
- And we also hunted down and fixed lots of bugs thanks to you guys! Keep 'em coming <3

Patch note 0.10.7b

These are all the awesome changes we've made this week:

- Stopped the death freeze overlay from appearing on top of mini-games.
- Stopped your Android from falling alseep on you, zzz.
- Made the tutorial UI prettier and easier to navigate.
- Made the Magic Powder easier to grab.
- The "Apply Settings" button is now more reliable!
- The Enigma mini-game is now more reactive.
- Tweaked animation speed in Twin Runes.
- If you won a mini-game and still died… that should no longer happen, sorry!
- You should encounter less accidental ice-covered rooms when rejoining a lobby for a new match.
- Fixed a bug where the same player could join a lobby twice.
- Added a pop-up to either reconnect to the same lobby or return to the Main Menu after a match, to help with an issue where players who were trapped watching adverts weren't in the lobby when the new match started. Don't leave your friends behind!
- Lots and lots of UI upgrades for PC and Android!
- Mini-game titles are easier to read.
- Players' flames now change size depending on remaining life!
- Doors now close, to dynamically change the map size depending on the number of players.

Have fun!
