Hello Gobbos, how is the start of the new year to you? We hope it’s a good one for everyone as well. We’re starting off our year with another success for Goblin Stone with the recent news from Tencent’s Games without Borders Game Awards 2023.


Goblin Stone received a Bronze Award in the Indie Game Game Awards category in a fierce competition among some of the most outstanding and upcoming games in the industry. We are truly humbled and overjoyed to hear this big news as this means that Goblin Stone is slowly receiving more support and recognition globally. Of course, this is not only the major success that our team has accomplished. Goblin Stone also reached the end of its beta milestone for its development. We’d like to first thank our community for joining us in our final Closed Beta Test. It was a big success! Our team was able to consider some feedback and fixed most of the issues that the community has brought up during the testing period. 2nd Closed Beta Test is now officially underway!
Greetings Gobbos! As we approach the much-anticipated launch of Goblin Stone, we're excited to share that our second Closed Beta Test is set to take place this November. Thanks to the valuable feedback we received from our first Closed Beta Test and insights gathered from previous demo updates, we've incorporated new features and improvements into the game. In the world of Goblin Stone, where brave goblins strive to reclaim their rightful place in a world overrun by adventurers, the diversity of your party is your most potent weapon. The Goblin Stone demo showcases six unique goblin classes, each with its distinct abilities and traits that you can build to create your ultimate goblin party. What's more, we redesigned these abilities to be even more impactful during battles, and you can put them to the test in the demo.

Guard


Guards are the valiant defenders. Armed with their trusty shields, they stand steadfast between danger and their fellow goblins, stunning foes with their unwavering resolve.

Raider


Raiders are the crafty opportunists, experts at lying in wait for that perfect moment to launch their sneak attacks and catch foes off-guard.

Acolytes are deeply connected to the spiritual world, using their insights to guide their fellow goblins through challenges that go beyond physical combat.

Peon


The Peon might not be the strongest goblin, but they still play an important role. They are the designated loot carrier and are adaptable goblins, capable of changing into any class to fulfill a multitude of roles within your party.

Devlog #19: Battle Guru & Smithy
Hello Gobbos!

In our last devblog, we introduced you to one of these special map events called 'Unique Scenarios'. This time, we will be exploring two more adventure features that we are actively working on and discuss how these features work and how it can help improve your adventure party’s firepower through ability and weapon enhancement. So get your gears ready, and let’s dive right into it!

Weapon Enhancements



The Smithy


While out on an adventure with your goblin party, you may occasionally encounter traveling Orcs on their camps. Some, like the Orc Merchant, sell their wares, while others lend their expertise to passers-by and even to adventuring goblins. One of these is the Orc Smith who you will find sitting with its blacksmithing tools and offers weapon enhancement in exchange for gold.


Successful weapon upgrade increases attack power


Interacting with the Smithy will prompt you to select any weapon to enhance it. Upgrading a single weapon costs gold and increases by 30 gold with each subsequent attempt. While it is possible to encounter the Smithy early in the run before you can gain gold in the level, we made sure that you can still gain value from every encounter as the first upgrade is always free.


Failed weapon upgrade


Upgrading a weapon through the Smithy is a gamble. You may attempt to upgrade up to five times or until the upgrade fails. The chance of success decreases as you continue to upgrade a weapon. Fortunately, upgrading your Armory in the Lair increases the success rate of upgrading a weapon. The chances to fully upgrade a weapon is still up to your luck but when the process fails, the encounter prematurely ends. You still keep all the upgrades you've paid for, but you lose that last bit of gold you paid for that most recent upgrade attempt that failed.

Ability Upgrades

In the early iterations of the game, the way to strengthen each goblin class’ abilities is to unlock new abilities and upgrade them in the Class Guild Room within the Lair, using the ‘Ability Deck’. Our design team made significant changes with this feature as we developed the new roguelike system in the game. We wanted to give you more options when strategizing your run, so we designed a new map encounter featuring the Battle Guru that lets you temporarily improve your goblin's abilities.

The Battle Guru


On your adventure run in Goblin Stone, you will meet another traveling Orc known as the Battle Guru. This Orc can help hone your group's combat abilities. Allowing you to customize your combat build for the current adventure.

Interaction with the Battle Guru is fairly simple. When you interact with the Battle Guru, you will be presented with three random ability cards and asked to choose one to upgrade. The pool of options includes all level 1 abilities of each class in the party.

You will be able to upgrade 3 random abilities each time you interact with the Battle Guru. Similar to the Smithy, all map events can be encountered more than once in every adventure run. If the luck is in your favor, it is possible to fully upgrade multiple abilities up to level 3.

While all of these enhancements and upgrades are temporary, your goblin party's odds of survival and effectiveness in a battle can greatly improve by taking advantage of the Battle Guru and Smithy's encounters!

Devlog #18: Unique Scenarios
Greetings Gobbos!

In this devblog, we'll explore a new adventure feature called ‘Unique Scenarios’ and how they can impact the choices you make in the game.

Unique Scenarios


With the inclusion of Map Events in our game, we intend to add variety to the interactions that the players will encounter within the game. The Unique Scenario is one of these map events which adds flair to a run while also entertaining the players with a fun side story. First let’s go into the details and see what it looks like in the game:

During adventure, you may come across a room with a Unique Scenario and once your goblin party passes through the trigger event area, it will activate an event where it will present the player with a random scenario or you could say a short story.



In the current design, the unique scenario is represented by a rotating ‘?’. The minimap icon and interface are both works in progress that may change in the future.

Each scenario prompts the player to select one of several options, allowing them to decide how they want the story to proceed. These side stories do not necessarily connect to the main story, but the choices made by the player may have an impact on their adventure run depending on the outcome of the scenario.



A unique scenario is a risk or reward event in which the choices have either fixed or unpredictable outcomes. The majority of these choices are straightforward, but some are only available if certain conditions are met. Here are the different kind of scenarios and choices that you may find in the game:

Default Choices


These give a selection of simple choices with no requirements for picking an option. Any option you choose will provide you an immediate reward, such as a weapon or resources.


Chance-based Choices


The probability rate is random. Where there is a chance of winning, and it implies that you won't always succeed. The outcome is always based on chance.

 

Prerequisite Choices


Choices that require something from the player. If the prerequisite is not met, the choice will be grayed out, making it unavailable. Keep in mind that some choices have a chance to either fail or succeed.



The design and idea behind


The visuals and storytelling are important aspects of Goblin Stone. After drawing inspiration from other roguelike games, our game designer developed this feature to give each adventure run a unique twist. By Introducing these unexpected events or obstacles it will add up to the kind of fun and engaging gameplay experience that we wanted for Goblin Stone, making the game feel less predictable and more exciting.
