Goblins & Grottos

Patch Notes 0.13.0

There's some nice new features in this patch. In addition, we're moving towards the final release of the game, which will include some previously unseen features such as a minecart and rails system, and a user-definable boss-battle system (similar to the cutscene system). Anyhow, more on that later... for now, we have patch 0.13.0:

New Audio:
- voice for the healer/priest character
- voices and sound effects for the skeleton characters
- lava background noises and bubble pops
- circular saw
- portal sound
- rope climbing ('creak') sounds
- wheatcrop rustling sound
- pendulum blade sound

New Goblin artifact:
- the goblin now has access to a special 'goblin shield' which can be used to deflect melee attacks and fireballs/arrows/missiles. Use SHIFT to hold it in front of you, and up/down to change its angle. After 3 hits it gets destroyed.

New Map:
- "Save the Duck" is our 14th official map, and involves some 'out of the box thinking' with rubber ducks...

Mapmaker features
- A set of 400 default names for villagers and NPC creatures
- A set of default chat which is automatically applied to hero characters when you put them into a map. This will make it easier to make fun maps where the characters talk a lot when things happen to them

New Graphical Decorations:
- mineshaft beams
- cave entrances
- more rocks
- discarded pickaxe
- gnarled trees
- snowman #2
- giant skeletal arm and skull
- dead lion king (!)
- dead bungee jumper
- trophy heads (for guildhouse walls)
- giant snowball
- minerals
- iceblocks

Tweaks and Bugfixes:
- fixed a problem with the background (parallax) layers when the camera is zooming in/out for cutscenes

Patch Notes 0.12.0

New Characters
- The healer spends his time resurrecting heroes
- Three skeleton characters (who are, of course, friendly with the goblin)

New Music
- "Goblin Detective (Reprise)"

New Map Objects
- a variety of new decorations for the 4th environment (mountain/castle)

Miscellaneous
- bugfixes and tweaks to code, graphics, and audio
- tweaks to map 06
- tidied up the Settings window

Patch notes 0.11.1

Another bunch of cool updates here, mostly related to region 4 (mountain/evil castle)

Traps/interactive objects:
- added a fireball-firing statue, with user-definable shoot rate and shoot speed
- added circular saw trap that moves between user-defined flags at a user-defined speed
- added disappearing tiles
- added portals which teleport characters and objects from one to another (based on user-defined Portal ID)
- added swinging pendulum axe traps, with user-definable movement speed and swing angle

Music:
- another new music track, "The Illusionist"

World objects, added for region 4:
- added snow! which looks really cool - turned on/off in cutscenes
- added bats that flap around and cling to surfaces
- added lava
- added mountain-top background tiles
- added 'evil skull' doorway block
- added various evil castle and mountain decorations: candlesticks, prison bars (foreground), barren trees and bushes, background mountains, green torch, snowman, health pool (decorative only), skeletons, guillotine (decorative), broken barrel, broken vase, pumpkins, giant sword, tombstones, evil pentagram, new spiderwebs, gargoyle statue, new background mountain foliage

Optimisations and tweaks:
- worked out a substantial physics code optimisation which will improve game play on weaker computers
- changed the goblin so that he doesn't switch to 'pushing' mode with small objects
- changed cannonballs so that they do not kill when moving slowly
- key rebindings can now be carried out, from the Settings window

Audio:
- added villagers 'thump' noise when they run into walls and knock themselves over
- added a new footsteps sound for the goblin when running on soft surfaces
- added sheep galloping and bleeting sounds
- added cow moo and munching sounds

Map editor:
- hero names and creature names now default to real player names downloaded from our database

Patch notes 0.10

Here's another patch packed-full of good stuff!

Three New Official Maps, all in the Village region:
- "Backstabber"
- "Do you even lift"
- "Boss of Feathers"

New characters:
- Three villagers, who scream and run away when they see the goblin or any other creature. Very comical! :-)

New Game Items:
- The scrolling backgrounds and basic tilesets for the 4th region: this includes the Mountain, and the Evil Castle
- New big trees and village 'stockade' map exit

Map Editor:
- When you have a FILL tool or the ERASER selected, you can now hold shift and drag to define a rectangular area, rather than having to place each tile individually

Audio:
- The troll now has a selection of roaring noises and 'speech' sounds. Ian tells me these were based on walrus sounds. It sounds quite feasible ;-)
- Elfqueen has a better spellcast sound

Miscellaneous
- The sidebar in the Online Maps window has been improved
- Various bug fixes and some efficiency tweaks

Patch notes 0.9

There's lots more good stuff in this patch!

Cheap Sheep!
- We have made a special 2-map story "Cheap Sheep", uploaded into the online maps repository, to celebrate the latest Steam sale. Can you defeat the evil Lord Gaben, who is intent on making all games 'sheep'? Will you meet the G&G developers Jonas, Sam, Bjorn and Ian? Will they have deep philosophical insights to impart?

World Objects:
- Sheep. These are rideable - they run and jump faster and higher than the goblin, but of course cannot climb walls. Also, sheep do not die from falling (just like in real life!). When killed by weapons/falling items, the sheep dies and the goblin survives.
- Lots of new village objects: chimney, boxes, haybales, brooms, cauldrons, beds, paintings, mailboxes, cows
- Rubber ducks which float on water
- Slippery goo which makes things slide around on tiles (also makes walls unclimbable if positioned on the left/right of a tile)
- Flame trap variations: left/right/top versions
- Blue flame traps - which are set to turn on and off in a predefined pattern (the yellow traps are operated by LeverIDs)
- Purple retractable spikes which are set to open/close in a predefined pattern (the normal retractable spikes are operated by LeverIDs)
- 'Tent' exit for village maps
- 'Hole in the ground' exit for cave maps
- New dispensers: boulders, and sheep. Did your mummy not tell you where baby sheep came from? ;-)

Audio:
- Ambient village sounds
- Ambient forest sounds
- Chicken sounds. Bok bok bok! ... Bokerk!
- Elf queen voice sounds / magic sounds
- Illusionist voice sounds / magic sounds
- Slime sounds
- Flame trap sounds
- Troll footsteps
- Sheep sounds

Map Editor
- Grass, earth, village ground autofill tiles now merge correctly
- Code optimisation for autofill tools
- Zoom in/out using mousewheel (3 levels of zoom available)

Bugfixes:
- Physics engine bugfix - occasional framerate slowdown related to the troll

Patch notes 0.8

There's lots of new content in this patch!

'The Village' (region 3):
- new tileset (with the usual autofill tools for tiles and backgrounds)
- new objects (house walls, shops, signs, fences, etc.)
- new physics-controlled objects (tables, potions, etc.)

Maps:
- map 09 has been extended substantially

Music:
- added a new music track ("The Hall of the Mountain Troll") which is used in the game menu and is also available for use in your maps

New Creatures:
- the troll has been added. This guy is a lot of fun - he attacks everything in sight, and you can ride on his head and control his movements while there.. drive him around like a tank! The troll does not have proper sound effects yet
- the chicken has been added. Does not have proper sounds yet.

New and Updated Heroes:
- the illusionist has been added (does not have proper sounds yet). This guy transforms his enemies (temporarily) into chickens. As a chicken you can fit through smaller gaps, and can fly short distances, but can't climb or operate any levers etc.
- the witch now has a full set of voice sounds
- the elf-thief now has a full set of voice sounds

Minor tweaks/changes:
- made it more possible to sneak around behind the heroes' backs without them being alerted - this also makes surprise knife-attacks on your enemies more feasible than before
- improved respawn sound for goblin
- goblin now drops carried item if killed
- new sounds for arrow traps

Steam:
- added collectible trading cards, backgrounds, badges and emoticons in Steam

G&G soundtrack now free to download!

All of the songs from the game (currently 10 tracks, with more to come!) are now free to download on: Ian's bandcamp page

Patch notes 0.7

There's lots of good stuff in this update!

- A Tutorial map has been added. This brings you through all of the main controls and actions.
- All maps 00 through 08 have been updated and improved - there's some especially nice new material in 08 :-)
- The backgrounds for environment #3 'The Village' have been added (its new tiles and objects etc. are coming soon)
- Added a new piece of music "The Goblin's Quest" which you can use in your maps as normal
- In the mapmaker, the various tools and objects are now separated into sections
- There is now a 'windowed mode' setting
- Goblin death fx improved
- Added jump-throw animation to goblin
- Added a special 'goblin dagger' which can be used to stab with, by pressing CTRL. Note that you need to use Down+CTRL to drop it. All 'normal' weapons dropped by heroes cannot be used by the goblin since, of course, he does not have the requisite Arbitrary Experience Level Needed To Wield the Weapon. Currently, all heroes apart from the Elf Queen may be killed with the goblin dagger. This may change later (e.g. perhaps knights and paladins will be invulnerable due to their armor).
- Flametraps now set the goblin, heroes and other creatures on fire rather than killing them immediately. They live for a few seconds, and if they can find water they can jump in and survive. Some heroes and creatures are invulnerable to fire
- climbing walls doesn't alert heroes (i.e. same as sneaking)

Patch notes 0.6

Additions:

  • New traps: flame trap and retractable spikes trap
  • New hero: the witch. She can teleport and cast a lightning bolt spell. Her voice sounds have not yet been made so for now she uses the same voice as the wizard
  • You can now throw while jumping

Tweaks/changes:

  • Any map/story with less than 3 votes does not show a stars-rating
  • Column sorting options added to the Create and Load dialogs

Patch notes 0.5.4.6

  • You can now swing on chains as well as climb them
  • Improved camera-movement smoothing
  • Speech bubbles and level-start text stays onscreen longer if it has lots of text

This is probably the last patch before version 0.6, which will bring in new content including the witch, flame traps, and retractable spike traps.
