Gone Viral hit Early Access two weeks ago! Thanks SO MUCH to the hardcore beta veterans and the newest fans flooding from all corners of the internet - we’re blown away by the love and support.
We couldn’t do this without you supporting indie development! As a scrappy team of developers, your Early Access involvement is making Gone Viral bigger and crazier - so we wanted to send y’all a special treat!
We thought: Hey, wouldn’t it be neat if we gave away cool stuff to the folks actively helping development? And then immediately we had a second thought: Hell yeah, that WOULD be neat!
Here’s our plan to do that.
Plan for World Domination Part 1: When you pick up the game in Early Access: boom, you get the Killer Shades cosmetic item that you can plop onto Decimus or Abacus (or other characters in development...ooh, teaser!)
These glowing stylish shades are available all the way through Early Access, so anybody in Early Access gets ‘em! Check out how snazzy they look!
But that’s not all! Since helping us early helps a lot, we’re helping us help you to a heaping helping! (editor note - that line broke my brain. Blame Skullbot.)
Enter Plan For World Domination Part 2! Every time we do a Major Update in Early Access (and we’re planning LOTS!) we’ll also be giving away a unique, limited cosmetic item to those intrepid early folks checking it out! You can impress all your fans with your fashion choices.
Here’s how it works: Log into the game and start a run even once during each update period and you’ll pick up that exclusive item and add it to your inventory for permanent future bragging rights. Hop into your Murderpedia character sheet, click your favorite cosmetic, and you’ll slam that puppy right on your head or appropriate appendage.
What’s the item available now (and ONLY now?!) - an amazing, majestic Founder’s Crown!
We understand that getting crowns is hard in other games so we’re going to make your lives easier by giving you this one free for having supported us early! The Founder’s Crown (unlike the shades) won’t be given away to new folks if they start after the next Major Update in Early Access comes out*! And rumors say that might be pretty damn soon!
So...if you haven’t picked up the game or logged in lately, you’ll want to get in there and knock off a run or two or fifty before the next update touches down (more on that soon!) There are blatant cool bribes to do so, and more coming!
If you have picked up Gone Viral - THANKS! Your many happy reviews, streams, and feedback on discord have kept us geeked up and cranking away.
That’s all from us for now! Good luck in the arena - you’ll need it!
*Maybe someday some of these cosmetics goodies might become DLC? We don’t know. Maybe they’ll never be back. Maybe our beancounters will use ‘em to make a buck from folks who weren’t cool like you who joined early. In any case, you’ll have snagged something for free those latecomers can’t - because you rock. And even if you never popped on Discord or only play a few times an update, you still rock! That feeds our analytics and makes the game better! So dammit, YOU DESERVE IT. Win-win!
Hotfix 0.5.0.1
EARLY ACCESS HOTFIX 0.5.0.1
Let me tell you, these first few days of Early Access launch have been CRAZY. Like, no one getting any sleep crazy.
But also a never ending stream of excitement and joy crazy - especially when watching our streamers play and hearing feedback from everyone who is supporting the Early Access so far!
As part of all this, we have noticed a few things here and there we wanted to sneak some fixes in on, and at least one of our players pointed out that controller shake can be a real issue for people with hand sensitivity or limited control. So that is the solo feature leading this hotfix along with the polish following behind.
Enjoy!
Features: -- Controller shake is now an option you can disable (thanks @morokko)
Polish: -- Fixed tire stacks using the wrong art on the Champ's floor (thanks @Swordmouse) -- Updated cursor to be more visible -- Gameshow kit version of TutorialBars -- You can no longer lose your selection on the main menu by accidently navigating to the completion bars on the right -- Implemented the new gameshow fence wall assets -- Fixed the viewer event voice overs being quite a bit louder than other VO (thanks https://www.twitch.tv/wanderbot) -- Fixed the tutorial logo signs being in floating boxes instead of being transparent -- Fixed scaling issues for both the logo and webcams on screens in the tutorial -- Scaling is now adjusted on the fly for screens in the tutorial to get the largest good looking display
Developer Notes -- [DEV] Updating the game version to 0.5.0.1
Gone Viral’s Early Access Journey Begins Today!
Let’s get started.
Gone Viral, the rough and tumble roguelite brawler you know and love, hits Early Access today! If you love the brutality, if you love the carnage, if you love the roaring crowd, then be prepared for the game to enter overdrive and dole out goodies all over the place. If you pick up the game for early access today, you’ll get unique, one-of-a-kind cosmetic rewards every month until the game launches, not to mention all the free updates that we’ve got planned. New characters, new levels, new bosses, new enemies, new mutations, new items, you name it, we’ve got it coming down the pike.
Gone Viral explores a mutant post-apocalypse society that so glorifies violence and social media that the ultimate hybrid of the two has become the cornerstone of their entertainment – the most brutal game show ever devised. Gone Viral puts the player in the shoes of a “contestant” on that gameshow who has been captured and is forced to fight for their life – and for likes.
String together sickening combos to sate your Fans’ thirst for blood and gain rewards. Mutations upgrade your slaughtering skills to achieve even greater spectacle and efficiency as you tear your way through room after room, leaving a trail of blood and tears (but mostly blood) in your wake. Grab your freedom by the throat!
Rise to become the apocalypse’s greatest SOCIAL MURDIA STAR as you amass a following in-game or IRL. “IRL!?” you say? That’s right! Twitch Integration optionally lets you invite your viewers to take part in the world of Gone Viral as Fans who can vote to either help or hinder you.
Quench your fans’ parched throats with fresh-squeezed BLOOD and reap the rewards. Do WHATEVER it takes to gain freedom!
Features:
Killer Combos - Annihilate enemies by ricocheting them off walls, smashing them into each other, or shoving them into bone-crunching traps.
Kills = Fans - The flashier your combos and the more mayhem you unleash, the more likes and followers you’ll get!
Fans = Upgrades - Sate your fans’ parched throats with FOUNTAINS of blood and they’ll reward you with amazing upgrades!
Homicidium ad Infinitum - With endless combinations of mutations and attacks, each unique experience in the arena is as death-defying as the last so you can MURDER FOREVER.
Blood Stream - Real-life audiences can introduce another layer of interaction to the experience as they vote to help (or hinder) you in your killing sprees.

Early Access Patch 0.5.0
EARLY ACCESS UPDATE 0.5.0
Just a few more little fixes here and there to make sure Gone Viral can put its best foot forward on Early Access release day! We are super excited to have you play and even more excited for you to see all the cool new stuff we are working on already, planning on making, and dreaming about adding over the next few months!
Enjoy!
Polish: -- Adding in four lines of localized text that decided to mark themselves as "needs review" for no apparent reason after being translated -- Fire Jets adjust their visuals to be more sandy if spawned in an Arena -- Added new Tips/Shoutouts (reminder to poke me if you'd like one added!) -- Tweaked Tips for https://twitch.tv/FextraLife and @TurraBull! -- Tips tweaks -- Switched some "beta" references to say "test" -- Removed a ghostly decal that was appearing on the fence posts in the gameshow tileset -- The cosmetic panel on the character sheet once again allows you to actually push the buttons -- Dangerous and Terminal Velocity are gated behind Insanity 1 for now to keep them from ruining runs of innocent newbies. No worries, Biggest Fan and Orbit remain to wreck their worlds.
Developer Notes -- [DEV] Last localized string gather before EA builds begin -- [DEV] Updating the account save file version -- [DEV] The Early Access save reset no longer happens if you are playing a demo version of the game
Early Access Patch 0.5.0 Release Candidate 1
EARLY ACCESS UPDATE 0.5.0.rc.1
Good lord, it’s here! The official update for Early Access! Which we already know we’ll probably tweak once or twice.
Now, you may say - Skullbots, is all this gonna go to your head? Being new and trending, actually going to Early Access? Well, probably! But our 3-person small-but-mighty team (with assists from a bunch of buddies of course) is gonna keep on cranking out regular mini updates and occasional Big Honkin’ Updates because that’s how we roll. Heck, Early Access hopefully lets us become a bigger small-but-mighty team.
In fact, we’re already working on a new class for Update #1….woot! Time to start cranking out yet more CONTENT! In upcoming weeks we’ll talk about our roadmap for new classes, new levels, new content, and more coming out over Early Access.
But it’s the final bit of Beta! So here’s a bit more polish and even a new feature as we enter Early Access! Introducing COSMETICS!
To give you a bit of control over your visual flair, you can now use your character sheet to thumbs-up and thumbs-down various cosmetic options for yourself. How do you get these new options, you ask? Well, just for joining Early Access you’ll get a set of Announcer Shadez - and, to thank early adopters, every major update there’ll be a unique cosmetic permanently unlockable the first time you play.
At EA launch, unlock the Founder Crown! Once we introduce our next major update, the Founder Crown gets locked away from the latecomers and all folks who play get to unlock a new thang (I’m rooting for a Tutu, but it’s up to Andrew).
Play at least once per update, and you’ll collect em all as our thanks for feeding our ravenous need for gathering data and feedback.
And speaking of thanks - as we wrap up Closed Beta (yep, until the 23rd you can check out the latest candidate build - do realize that save files won’t carry over from CB to EA, however!)...
THANK YOU! As a tiny indie team we 100% couldn’t have done it without the thousands of folks who have played, praised, critiqued, and sassed us along the way.
You rock.
Enjoy!
Features: -- Cosmetics system added! -- Logging on at any time during Early Access unlocks the Announcer Shades cosmetic -- Logging on before Major Update 1 unlocks the Founder Crown cosmetic -- From the Murderpedia, you can enable any unlocked Cosmetics to turn em on/off across all characters -- Each Major Update, we’ll give a new permanent cosmetic to anyone who plays at least once -- More to come! We’ll tweak the cosmetic system as we add more goodies to it, so feedback welcome
Content: -- Added Spanish, French, and Korean language settings -- Added font support for the new languages -- Added in-game advertising... but... not the bad kind... the funny kind... I swear -- Added many new Tips and Shoutouts ----We now unlock any tip or shoutout early* and flag it as "common" if it contains your Twitch name (even if you aren't streaming/connected/Oauthed) ---- Note that if your Twitch name is set to "Tip" or something similar then you will unlock a LOT of tips. Nice going, "Tip" - if that's your REAL name. ---- *note that Tips are served dynamically - Early, you get basic tips. As you unlock elements of the game, we begin to show few if any basic tips and start to show mostly expert tips/design philosophies/shoutouts, etc.
Combat: -- Bubble Wand projectiles now can knock around creatures or physics objects with more force/farther - feels much more kinetic (feedback welcome) (Good suggestion from Wanderbots stream) -- Recovery from explosive Knockdown is much quicker for the player at all insanity levels. Much more reactive - but maybe too easy to recover? Feedback welcome. Thanks @Ceapa_Verde @Seebo and many others
Twitch: -- Re-ordered the Twitch Oauth option to be grouped with the other connection info for clarity -- Added button to Twitch Settings to send automated whispers to active dev accounts (helpful to unblock dev access if you have whispers blocked from strangers by default and don’t wanna hunt down one of us on stream to whisper to enable cheats)
Polish: -- The Juggernaut now cleans itself up better if he dies while flying -- Switched the 4th floor Da Champ boss fight arena over to the new gameshow lighting -- Barbed wire wall toppers will no longer cast glitchy shadows -- Fixed an issue where ambient and combat music was restarting from the beginning every time they were swapped to -- Updated various UIs to say "Early Access" instead of "Closed Beta" -- Which is incredibly exciting -- And if we hotfix between now and then this will be quite confusing, but luckily we have highly intelligent testers, and @[AG] Buddy -- Gold material updates -- Locked door replacement -- Pickup glow adjustments -- Wallop arrow adjustment -- Stone floor brightness adjustment -- Exposure settings tweaks -- Main Menu rim light tweaks -- Chest pickup rim lights -- Updated localized strings to have the latest translations -- Added mesh for Announcer's sunglasses for cosmetics -- Hooked up tile variants for the basic gameshow tiles -- You can no longer enter the escape menu when in the end of level or end of run UIs -- Lowered the chance of the new gameshow base tile variations spawning -- Final elevator has a Champ Belt letting you know you're about to win! -- Fix for widescreen UI issues found by redditor /u/Forgot_my_pa5sword (thanks for the find!) -- Fixed the destructible mesh settings for the gameshow wall TV -- Fixed an issue where silhouettes would stick their wall blocking geo into other rooms (thanks @Seebo) -- Fixed an issue where silhouette wall blocking geo was not tall enough to hide the bottom of arena walls -- Wall adverts now randomize their "swap" time -- Fixed an issue where breaking a wall advert during the static transition would leave broken screen pieces with permanent static -- Updated all language localizations to the lastest strings -- Updated Game Over screen to send folks to steam in general since wishlists ain't a thang soon! -- Hmmm, we should only send folks to steam for recommendations if they actually WIN a run. Losing runs = nope, don't recommend now. Dang, wish we were more evil. -- Gameshow advert decors now take up a little more space on the walls to allow some breathing room near corners and each other -- Fixed several bugs with decor overlapping door frames -- Doors now block out decor in a more exact area, meaning less oddly blank walls near doors -- Scooted the gameshow advert decor panels back into the wall a bit -- Allowed the larger gameshow screen decor items to spawn even on the fence covered walls -- Tweaks to the Founder Crown -- Fixed an issue where decor being removed during level load was giving you carnage -- Adjusted Early Access text and spacing to be more consistent on main menu -- Acid Bots and other things that drip acid or flame or other stuff no longer drip while being walloped - and no longer purge other buffs while doing so (good catch @Seebo) -- Slightly toned down the bubble knockback as @Doug was concerned we'd make the game too easy for y'all -- Disabling the Post Process Quality video option as it does not play well with the new gameshow lighting (thanks @Retromation) -- Cleaned up Murderpedia sections of various elements and pruned a few items that aren't yet achievable (thanks for notes @Seebo ) -- Updated the main gameplay theme and combat music to the newest significantly longer versions -- Any Achievement is automatically Mastered as you achieve it, even if you don't win that particular run (to keep you from having unmasterable achievements like First Death). -- Added a fix to Murderpedia buttons that may fix an odd case where Abacus mastered its (blank!) starting armor. Seriously, WTF. -- Cleaned up gamepad movement on the in-game run and character sheet menus -- Switched the boss fight music over to the newer song -- Cut the advert transition time in half -- Adjusted the advert decor spawning to appear half as often
Developer Notes -- [DEV] Minor tweaks to god commands -- [WIP] Removal of beta icons -- [DEV] Redirector cleanup -- [DEV] Further Beta icon and text tweaks -- [DEV] Updating the game version to 0.5.0.1 -- [DEV] Fixed several issues with escape characters and French -- [DEV] Gathered new localized strings for translation -- [WIP] Founder Goodies/cosmetic unlocks underpinnings -- [DEV] Added a save versioning system to the account saves and the game -- [DEV] Added a save upgrade system to the account manager -- [DEV] Added (but did not enable) a save reset system for the conversion to Early Access in the future -- [DEV] Removed some log spam for an audio queue -- [DEV] Completely changed how decore slots are gathered -- [DEV] Changed how walls handle being marked as plain -- [DEV] Fixes for cooked build compile issues -- [DEV] Updating the game version to 0.5.0.0-rc.1 -- [DEV] Updating the dll and pdb -- [DEV] Updated the detector box for the advert decor to be the correct size -- [DEV] Added logging around spawn pool chances -- [DEV] Added the latest strings to the localization system -- [DEV] Removed a ton of old / unused music -- [DEV] Twitchworks dll

Another week, another update! Well it’s not just any other week - we’re getting ready for the end of Closed Beta (boo) on the 23rd - and the start of Early Access (yay!) on September 24th! Exciting times!
This week - an overhaul of Polls, fixing lots of subtle issues when transitioning levels or coming back from saves, tweaking Insanity Modes, and lots of polish as we clean the windows and spray potpourri around the joint before Early Access!
Thanks for the streams/suggestions and feedback over these weeks - we’ve got a giant amount of stuff in the hopper for new content, classes, mutations, levels, and more coming down the pike in EA - but makin’ sure the core is solid has been a primary goal of Beta and we couldn’t have done that without ya.
Enjoy!
Content: -- The "Gain 6 heart containers" achievement is now "Gain 7 heart containers" since you have a bonus heart on Insanity 0 (from https://www.twitch.tv/Wyvern stream as he got this achievement in the first room from Resilience) -- Added a new achievement for becoming the new Champion with Abacus -- Insanity 6 now speeds up Enemies, no longer speeds up the PC, and beefs up Bosses (Good suggestion @Seebo) -- Added +IT, +ShotZip, +Attack Rate stats to Telekinetic Weapon

Hotfix 0.2.25.2
CLOSED BETA HOTFIX 0.2.25.2
There are a few minor goodies in here - but MOSTLY this should:
-- Address some FPS issues that can occur from our audience getting a bit too rowdy for some graphics cards -- Fix an issue where Steam Saves could occasionally decide “aw no, you can’t have the new sexy graphics and rooms, we’re overwriting that with old prison stuff because we hate fun”
Also fixed some polish goodness - especially from watching recent streams big and small, thanks for that!
Enjoy!
