Goodbye Volcano High's Release Delay
Hey dinos. We have an important update for you regarding Goodbye Volcano High’s release date. After assessing our production schedule for GVH, we’ve made the decision to move our launch to August 29, 2023.
The reality is that, with our current workload, we could not have met our June launch date without significant cuts to the quality and scope of the game. This would mean delivering something much different than what we’ve envisioned and worked toward. We don’t want to release anything less than the best version of the game we have been making throughout our development cycle.
Plus, we’re a studio that prides itself on avoiding crunch. Meeting our original launch date would require our team to work nights, weekends and early mornings to ship and risk burning people out.
This delay also moves our launch date out of a very busy June release calendar, opening us up to more incredible opportunities, and gives the game a greater chance of success.
I know this isn't the easiest thing to hear—it is a difficult thing for us to do. GVH is a really special project for us and everyone on our team has done incredible work on this game. We need a bit more time to make sure all that work really shines! We’ve been so honoured to hear such a positive response to our demo. Soon, we’ll be premiering another public demo and we hope you’ll all have the chance to check it out.
Thank you so much for your understanding - we can’t wait for you to play what we’ve been working on.
LudoNarraCon Q+A Livestream
We’re excited to announce that we’ll be livestreaming a Q+A with Goodbye Volcano High's Co-Directors Saleem Dabbous and Kyle McKernan as part of LudoNarraCon! It's all going down next Thursday May 4, from 5-6p EST 💞👏 on both our Twitch channel and Goodbye Volcano High's Steam Store page.
This is the first time we've conducted a dedicated Q+A session like this so make sure you don't miss it! They'll be covering topics like inspiration, themes, story development insight, game design considerations, and general dino intrigue.
We’ve also been collecting questions on our Discord, Tik Tok, Twitter, and Instagram! We hope to get through as many of your q's as we can!🙇
Dev Update + Demo News!
Starting our dev update off with what's important lol: All the KO_OP staff members have their own dinosona now; a lot of them are actually in this picture, at a big concert on the roof of the school.
Our animation team is on a strict wrap schedule that has all their remaining work mapped out for the rest of the game. The animations have been split up into two categories: poses or in-betweens (sound off in the comments if you wanna learn more about this process). We’re also down to just a few pick-up lines of dialogue before we fully wrap on VO, which is huge, and our background art team is almost done, with only two members of our background art team remaining 🥺 It’s so bittersweet to off-board team members from a game as it wraps up! Right now, the name of the game is integration: getting alllll those assets into Unity. Our integration team is so efficient right now it's wild, and we've gotten an assist from our Team Pilgrim programmers (in case you missed it: we operate under a "two team" format, where one team is making a game while another is in concept development so we always have something on the go. We're Team Fang, in case you missed that).
In addition to our dev updates though, we've finally been able to get Goodbye Volcano High into people's hands! Not the full game of course, but our demo! In March we had our first opportunities to get hands-on thoughts from other game developers at GDC's Day of the Devs, where we were one of a handful of games curated for the event, and at PAX East, which was the first time consumers got their claws on the Goodbye Volcano High demo.
Thanks @wolfnanaki for this amazing round up of all the press on GVH's demo!
Getting to hear all your thoughts and all the things people were excited about was like a balm on our weary souls! We can't thank you enough. We were, however, very sorry our online dino delegates didn't get a chance to play the demo 💔 Wouldn't you know it though, that's all about to change...
Because we are proud to announce that the first online demo for Goodbye Volcano High will make its debut at LudoNarraCon this coming May 4th-8th! YES THAT'S RIGHT DINOS. It’ll be here on Steam.
It's so overwhelmingly wonderful to get to be a part of LudoNarraCon. I remember watching talks the past few years and being so impressed with the way they run this fest, and the types of games they highlight. It's so special. And now we're in the mix! We're so honoured.
It's been a big month for us, dinos! The whole development team has been hard at work finishing this darn game, and it's looking so beautiful. We really can't wait for you to see it.
New Trailer + Official Release Date!
Big day for dino fans: Goodbye Volcano High just took part in Sony's State of Play, dropping a new trailer and official release date. Get ready to laugh, cry, and catch some beats this June 15, 2023 💖😘 You can see the official trailer here and wishlist on the PlayStation store here.
We really can't express how excited we are to have our trailer run in State of Play, and we really hope it gets more eyes on our sweet, funny, melancholy coming-of-age game! To those of you that have been following us since we announced in 2020, thank you so much.
If you just found out about us: welcome to our Steam page! Be sure to check out the pinned posts: our FAQs and guidelines will help you feel at ease here, and if you have any questions about the game be sure to let us know.
If you’re not new here, then we hope the trailer gave you lots to be excited about! We got to reveal quite a few things from the game we’ve been keepin’ secret for a while: this is our first ~official~ Sage showcase, for example, and it’s also the first time we’ve shown off what the in-game L&L (the dino universe’s version of D&D, natch) looks like, complete with costumes and JRPG visuals 😭
Additionally, we got to announce a few more voice actors by way of the trailer. Did anyone recognize them? We have Ozioma Akagha as Trish (Fang's bestie and bug enthusiast), Mark Whitten as Reed (the chillest velociraptor drummer you've ever met) and Abe Bueno-Jallad as Naser (charmingly uptight little brother with a lot on his plate), and Allegra Clark as Naomi (our favourite tender goodie goodie).
Oh and while you're here, don't forget to check out "Reunion," the new single from the GVH OST while you're here! Listen on: Spotify, Bandcamp, and Apple Music.
So thanks for stopping by, continuing to support us on our lil’ game dev journey, and hitting that wishlist button. We love ya, dinos!
See You In the New Year, Dinos!!
Toot toot hi hi!! KO_OP here! We’re wrapping up for the year and getting ready to get cozy and not look at screens for a few weeks (jk we’ll be looking at so many screens but it’s not for work so it doesn’t count, right? …Right???)
Not to be that guy (as in: a dev encouraging you to subscribe to another form of getting content from me lol) but our end of year newsletter is going out tomorrow, and it's going to have the wallpaper version of our new key art that y'all have been requesting! Make sure to subscribe ASAP to get that in your inbox in time for the holiday season! Because we all need a new desktop wallpaper for the holiday season 😤

Our resident hype-lord Ramo has also included some sprint review highlights from the past year. Sprint reviews are where our talented team shares what they've been working on (it's essentially a show and tell. With extremely talented people. Where we all ooo and ahh and generally lose it over everyone's work. And now you can too!)
That’s all I’ve got for you! We want to thank you so much for your continued support, and for following our trippy lil journey while we make our queer lil dinosaur game, Goodbye Volcano High.
Happy winter break to our team, and happy holidays to all of you. We love y'all!
Goodbye Volcano High Release Date Update + Teaser
As many of you have likely guessed, Goodbye Volcano High will not be making its targeted 2022 release. We have made the difficult decision to push its launch to Summer of 2023.
This has been a learning experience for us: producing an ambitious project for our studio's size, with over 6000 voiced lines, and a large number of bespoke animations. We care about this game and the story we're telling so much, and want to deliver something that is in line with what we've always envisioned for this game. It's what you deserve!
We understand this delay might be disappointing, but we are confident this is the right decision and that it will be worth the wait.
In the meantime, we hope you enjoy this teaser trailer — it's a sneak peek of what we've been working on for the past little while!
If you’re intrigued and haven’t joined our community, you can become a member of our Discord or follow us on TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram, where we’ll be continuing to post even more updates on all or most of these channels in the New Year.
The whole team at KO_OP is beyond excited for everyone to play Goodbye Volcano High when it’s ready, and we thank you so much for your patience.

You can find the full version of the song featured in our teaser ("Don't Call" by Dabu ft Brigitte Nagger) on YouTube or Bandcamp. 😘
Weeeeeee're Baaaack
We’re baaaaaack, and this is an alert that we’ve given our Steam page a makeover, including some new screenshots, so take a peek and let us know what you think!
Sorry for ditching you, Steam. It’s not you, it’s me. Dang, it’s been a while, I am really blowing the dust off our Steam updates! 😓 Here, let me distract you with the shiny new screenshot from the game in the header…
I also wanted to remind you all that you can get updates on GVH’s process on a few other platforms! We really hope you’ll join us wherever you’re most active, so you can get angsty gay dinos in all your feeds 😈
One final thing! We’ll be returning to sending you updates through our newsletter soon, so I wanted to remind you to sign up for that here. ASAP, preferably, since our next dispatch will include some fancy new wallpapers, and I know you’re gonna wanna get in on that… 👀
Well, there you have it! Thanks for continuing to follow our development process, we’re so excited to share more with you all soon!
Goodbye Volcano High Delayed to 2022
In addition to Global Events™ 2020 saw us rebooting the narrative of our game (you can read more about that here). Those two factors have delayed our release timeline. So we are making what we're sure is by now an expected announcement: Goodbye Volcano High will be a 2022 title, not a 2021 one.
It's been a really hard year for many reasons, and the mental and physical health of the team has to come first. We don't want to crunch, and we don't want to put ourselves in stressful situations to finish the game by 2021 when we can take a little more time.
So ya! That's that! Band-aid ripped!
We love the community that we've fostered through developing Goodbye Volcano High, and we hope it isn't too much of a bummer to have to wait a little longer for the dino drama. Thank you to those who have been supporting us since day one and to those who have joined us along the way. We really appreciate you and your support. We love making this game and we're lucky we have a chance to make it!
We’ll have some more fun updates we'll be posting in the coming months that we hope you’ll like.
