Unit Spotlight - The Epics!
All the epic units are in the spotlight today! What makes these units so unstoppable? Read on for a brief history behind the Beta's Hand of Ruk, Human's Alpha, and the Goo's Purger epic unit.
Is the game growing long and you want to deal a swift victory? These are the ultimate units that are going to get you that achievement.

Which epic do you like to finish the enemy off with?
What would Ruk really think about his namesake?
Named after one of the saviors of the Beta people, the original Hand of Ruk suffered an accident during field tests. Afraid of its power, Beta leadership vowed not to deploy the behemoth unless absolutely necessary. Recent iterations have become more stable, allowing for construction directly on the battlefield. In truth, Ruk would protest such a dangerous weapon being named after him, due to this gentle nature. Unfortunately, the first Hand of Ruk was commissioned after his death.
When things are most grim, Humanity sends in one of its own.
With humans reaching near immortality, the idea of losing countless numbers in warfare became almost inconceivable. Thus, after the Armistice, it was decided Humanity's armies would remain mainly artificial. However, when the situation is dire, a single human will be called in to pilot the devastating Alpha. It's not that the Alpha's weaponry can't be automated, that would be an easy task. In fact, no human trusts the awesome destructive capabilities of the Alpha to a machine.
When all else fails, the Goo sacrifices an important part of itself to survive.
The creation of a Purger is an instinctual reaction. When no other avenue seems viable, Goo will sacrifice itself into a Purger in a desperate bid to avoid annihilation. A Purger should be considered the feral child of the Goo - running mainly on impulse and self-preservation. Once Goo merge into a Purger, there is no going back. The most dangerous thing the Goo could do is create is one massive Purger. By doing so it would lose most reason and knowledge, focusing on survival instead.

Unit Spotlight - Goo Specialized Units
Goo is in the spotlight today! We dig deep into more about this faction's specialized units: the anti-air Tempest, sacrificial Dweller, long-range Crescent, and the protective Bastion.
Want to finish off the enemy for good? These are the units that are going to get you that victory!
Also, you've got to check out this super cool and recently updated unit comparison guide!
Which Goo specialized units do you like to use the most?
Tempest
The Tempest used to be a giant barometer. Honest!
A close relative of the Radiant, the Tempest's primary purpose used to be observing and recording weather patterns. The sensitive stalks on the top of its body detect changes to air pressure and humidity. Radiants and Tempests often worked together to gather information. Their combined efforts often gave Humanity the best picture of the planet's environment. Tempests now keep the skies clear of enemy aircraft, firing homing globs of electrically-charged nanites.
Dweller
Focused on combat from day one, the Dweller sacrifices itself for the good of the whole.
The Dweller's purpose has always been combat-focused. Due to the hostile creatures on some planets explored by the Goo, the Dweller's intent was to burrow in the ground and explode whenever hostile animals approached sensitive areas. It was very important to the designers, however, that the nano-machines comprising the Dweller not be wasted after detonation. Because of this, any nanites that survive the Dweller explosion reform into a Small Protean, capable of morphing into other units.
Crescent
The Crescent has actually changed very little since its original design.
The Crescent's original purpose was to facilitate Goo replication by rapidly spreading nanites over a large area. These nanites could then consume nearby fuel to quickly replicate. The Crescent uses the same delivery system to fire giant corrosive orbs of Goo at very long distances, which clings to units and structures. The Crescent is so good at flinging Goo, its attack can travel an extreme distance before finding its target, making hunting down these artillery very costly.
Bastion
Like its current iteration, the original Bastions were also protectors.
Since the Bastion's conception, it has been focused on the defense and protection of other vital Goo units. What it lacks in offensive armament, it more than makes up for in size and intimidation. Originally meant to shelter and provide protection to vulnerable Goo, the Bastion continues that same mantra of defense to this day. Some Beta claim it has mind-control powers that force enemies to become hostile against it. These are mere rumors and are currently unsubstantiated.

Goo is in the spotlight today! We explore more about this faction's core units: the defensive Drover, offensive and Drover friendly Strider, stealthy Radiant, and devastatingly tanky Destructor.
Want to cover as much territory as possible? These are the units that are going to get you that initial foothold!
Also, you've got to check out this super cool and just updated unit comparison guide!
Which Goo core units do you like to use the most?
DROVER
What was the Drover's purpose before the Goo became a killing machine?
The original purpose of the Drover was blanket exploration of entire landmasses. Their rapid production and fast movement allowed groups of them to cover vast distances in a short time. Surprisingly, the Drover legs used to function rather well in the water, rotating to provide a propeller-like motion. This meant the Goo could chart both the land and the sea with relatively little investment. Though small, in large groups Drovers can shred an enemy in seconds.
STRIDER
Striders once had a noble purpose.
The first Striders accompanied groups of Drover as they spread across the land. While the Drover surveyed, the Strider collected DNA samples and recorded details of both flora and fauna for transportation back to the hive mind. Now, the Strider has abandoned its collection duties in favor of firing razor-sharp shards. These shards are capable of piercing deep into enemy flesh and armor. Once embedded, the nanites that make up the shard detonate themselves, causing internal damage.
RADIANT
Those aren't eyes on top of its head!
Originally, the Radiant recorded data on geological patterns, studying plate tectonics and minerals within the ground. While the large orbs on the top of the Radiant's stalks are called eyes, they actually don't see like a Human eye does. Instead, the Radiant "sees" variances in earth vibrations, as well as changes to mineral consistency and density. Today, the Radiant uses its unique vision to detect enemy movements in a large area around itself, even on high terrain.
DESTRUCTOR
The Destructor used to eat rocks. Well, sort of.
The Destructor's original purpose was one of demolition. Whenever a group of Drovers would be unable to progress to a certain section of a planet due to terrain. Destructors could easily bore holes into hardened rock or flatten entire plateaus, given enough time. This allowed Drovers to easily reach any point on the planet. The Destructors volatile weapon can easily melt through a structure's outer layer or a vehicle's armor, though it is relatively vulnerable itself to being destroyed.

Grey Goo Tournament Series Overview
The Grey Goo Tournament Series (GGTS) is getting intense! Are you interested in participating, or wanting to watch the next Qualifier round? Check out this video to learn more:
Today we are spotlighting the Human core units: the defensive Trident, hard hitting Revolver, stealthy Dagger, and tough and tanky Gladius.
Want to command the battlefield with shiny and advanced technology? These are the units that are going to get you that initial ground control!
Which core unit do you tend to use the most?
TRIDENT
The Human Armistice changed a lot about the world, including warfare.
After the Armistice was signed, Humanity was forced to come to grips with the awesome power their world-ending technology was capable of unleashing. The Trident was the first result of that revelation. The first autonomous warmachine, the Trident's focus on defense let Humans to dip their toes back into the waters of warfare. At the same time, dozens of safety systems were put into place to ensure any one person could not wield too much destructive power.
REVOLVER
What makes the Revolver and other Human units so effective?
Like others unit in the Human arsenal, the Revolver is a piece in a much larger whole. It is connected to every other unit in a network of wireless communication, all of them interfacing with a central server. Each army is separated from other armies. This allows for autonomous operation within a specific battle, but a theatre of combat requires Human oversight. This separation gives control to multiple Human intermediaries, preventing any one person or AI from gaining too much power.
DAGGER
The Dagger was built out of deadly necessity.
This unit's name is misleading. It is not a dagger itself, but the tool that finds the dagger in the dark, aimed for your back. The technology behind this unit was developed on a planet at the edge of civilized space, where savage, cold-blooded animals could refract light with their scales, rendering them invisible. Eventually, a means of detecting specific alternations of light patterns was discovered. Now, the Dagger is used to prevent invisible enemies from sneaking into sensitive areas.
GLADIUS
Don't fix what isn't broken is the rule for the tank of the future.
Out of all the units in the Human arsenal, the Gladius more closely resembles a classic tank. The firing chambers are separated from the thrusters and set on top of a freely rotating disc. This allows the Gladius to move while firing its canons in 360 degrees. Its weapons excel at punching through armor to strike at vulnerable mechanisms inside. The Gladius remains a staple of many Human armies, a testament to the efficiency of warmachines created in the early years of mankind.

From the Game's Producer - A Thank You!
Howdy Community,
Well that was exciting! I want to thank everyone who tuned in to the first qualifier of the Grey Goo Tournament Series this past weekend. You made all of the work we put into the first qualifier worth it, especially those of you who stuck with us for all seven (plus) hours. You’re the best.
I also want to thank all of the players who participated in this initial qualifying event, and congratulations to the finalists who will be joining us at Pax South. The game’s players are the reason we’re hosting this event, and we hope you all enjoyed yourselves. We’re rooting for all of you to return next month!
Finally, I want to thank the team of volunteers across all of our projects here at Six Foot that stepped up to make this event possible. There were QA testers, CS reps, marketers, and artists doing everything from refereeing matches to bringing in lunch. We even had a significant other volunteer their time for free to do hair and makeup. There are a lot of awesome people here who believe in Grey Goo and its community enough to sacrifice their weekend to make events like this possible, and it wouldn’t be right to not acknowledge them here. Thank you all for the help.
With all of that said, we definitely have some areas where we can improve before the next qualifier. To that end, we’re working on an official feedback process that Berek will be posting soon. We’ll have a survey for folks who watched, one for our competitors, and one for our volunteers to get everyone’s perspective on how to make things better. Remember, the whole reason we’re doing this is for the community, so please make sure to respond if you have the time to do so.
Now, let’s get to a couple of things that warrant discussion. Because this letter is already a bit long, I think it makes sense to split the conversation up on a per subject basis. We’re going to make several posts over the next couple of days that we will then come back here and retroactively link to. Please check back occasionally as we get everything prepared. Until then, best Goo wishes, and good luck qualifying for Qualifier 2!
This week's leaderboard rankings of the players registered for the GGTS are in! See who's in the Top 16 above for the week of Sep 29. These players are the next potentials for Qualifier Two.
We will be updating the list on a weekly basis through the rest of the tournament season. Good luck participants on getting to Qualifier Two!
Meanwhile, as you saw last weekend, Bikerushownz dominated Qualifier One with DallasBuyersClub, Jdanzi, and Loho also winning qualifier status. Watch their matches on Twitch!
