The biggest problem for long-time players has been the bug with certain NPCs vanishing off the map and never returning. I'm truly sorry this was a bug in earlier versions and this bug remained in savegame files. This update features a substantial hack applied to saved games when they are loaded that tries to fix the incorrect flags and counters that some NPCs have carried forward from earlier versions. This should result in these NPCs reappearing in many locations at new intervals that have also been adjusted in their scheduling counters.
The next update will likely restore the movement and dynamic pathfinding of the NPCs and also introduce their former competition with the player for tablets and other treasures hidden in Hyperborea. These things were commented out but some of the old code has already been incorporated to give the NPCs agendas and schedules of their own.
The following update after that will be in tandem with the release of the manual for the game.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
Sorry the manual isn't finished yet, will be working on it through holidays to get it ready for a January release. Continuing to work on some of the remaining game systems that need a bit of polishing in response to feedback from players.
An update for the game will be issued before New Year's and will resume regular updates afterwards as before preceding Grimoire V2.0 release.
Golden Era Enterprises Moving To New Headquarters
I am just getting everything set up in my new office and am planning to resume work on Grimoire (especially the manual) early next week. It has been a lot of work moving everything and getting infrastructure organized. Should be hard at work on manual (first!) as soon as I get power and internet connection.
Grimoire 1.2.0.27-R Update
+Maintenance release prior to 1.2.0.30 accompanied by manual.
* Emergency fix to starting skill sets for newly created characters
* Enchanted Blade spell enables non-magical weapons to hit magical creatures
* Little Rosy toned down a little when recruited into party
* SHOWMAP function in NPC scripts fixed so NPCS can mark maps
* Adjustments made to some learning rates for skills
Grimoire 1.2.0.26-R Maintenance Update
This update was released before the official manual goes out just to address many issues fixed over the past two weeks.
Critical bugs that cause asserts and glitches involving items and monsters are repaired here as well as some bugs that just cause mildly aberrant behaviour.
Many issues with balance have been addressed in monster XP and in leveling up for players. Game exploits tapered down. I am not sure any of these were really bugs or unintended but feedback has resulted in them being modified somewhat resulting in many combats, particularly boss combats, becoming much harder to insta-kill and insta-win. Monster and player saving throws against all kinds of effects are more likely in the new tables and combat may be more difficult in general.
Ellsworth Hall's Orchestral Revisions Of Grimoire Classic Tunes
Ellsworth Hall is working on a complete overhaul of all Grimoire's music from MIDI to conventional instruments! This will be offered in the future on the Steam Store as the Grimoire soundtrack which will include both the original MIDI scores as well as the newly revised versions.
You can hear a medley on the soundcloud page below:
Hopefully sometime during this week will be releasing first version along with the next update providing substantial improvements to gameplay and many bug fixes/tweaks much requested by users.
Grimoire Manual Is Coming Out Next Friday
You have to be a Grimoire regular to get that joke.
I am working on the manual today and tomorrow all day. I have it in a rudimentary form and am trying to fill it out with the essentials. The game is so dense that writing about Grimoire's mechanics makes you realize you have a lot more to write about Grimoire's play mechanics.
There is also a new update coming tomorrow that will be the first that isn't trying to fix an assert. Grimoire "asserts" are in reality logging events that require a full stop because some data was encountered that just isn't right at that moment in the game. Those seem to have vanished after some small redesigns of the code in a few places, hopefully they won't be coming back.
Grimoire Discounted For Only 12 Hours Remaining!
Thanks to all the people who took a leap of faith and bought Grimoire the first week without even a manual yet! In 12 hours the door is going to close on the discount and Grimoire will be DRM protected next week as further improvements appear in the game including countless new enhancements! Act now or be prepared to wait until early spring 2075 A.D. for the next sale on Grimoire at that price! Grimoire has effortlessly sold 3600+ copies on word-of-mouth alone, no attempt by me at any marketing or review harvesting, no keys to reviewers and no public speaking by me anywhere outside of this page! Purely promoted by the grass roots on firsthand player recommendations. I fully expect to sell 360,000 copies before we are through and by that time Grimoire's currently frozen map will have more than doubled in content. If you get in early now at the discount you could be enjoying the ever expanding world of Hyperborea for many years to come! MY policy during the first week on Grimoire for twenty years would be no hawking and no pandering, I would let game players decide whether or not it was a good game purely on it's own merits.
It's important to point out that all mainstream gaming magazines and publications have been firmly against Grimoire with the kind of ferocity that was last seen during Donald Trump's Presidential campaign. There has been a virtual shutout of all mentions and where they have deigned to review the game it has been through clenched teeth and often they seem to have been more interested in talking about me than the game itself. I take pride in the fact I have this kind of opposition, everybody should be so lucky. Grimoire is winning without their help in any way. It's only going to get worse for them because the game is selling itself - it doesn't need them at all. Read what Jonathan Swift said about this subject, you'll know why it is a great honor. The forces of decline are like the grains of sand in the ocean but incline will still beat them.
Grimoire Manual Underway!
I am working on that manual right now. The Steam keys are going out to backers, I have outsourced it to someone else who is graciously doing that painstaking job of sending each Steam key to each individual backer!
The manual will likely be an executable that loads a reference panel with a search facilty built-in so it should be easy to find the information you're looking for.
The most recent patch for Grimoire fixed quite a few big problems and added inventory accelerator buttons to quickly flip through game inventory. Unfortunately the fixes may have broken existing savegames. I apologize to people who lost their game data but I think that could be the last time that happens. Grimoire had a lot of last minute changes, always a bad idea, some of them introduced these bugs I had to fix.
It is looking pretty stable. I don't consider item data missing sometimes to be a major bug and will be fixing each one of these problems on a case-by-case basis. This will never break a savegame and in fact 99% of most fixes from now on will not impact savegames.
