We're only a few weeks away from the launch of Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure™. When the expansion launches on August 22, it'll bring all-new areas to explore, set high in the skies above Tyria: two new explorable zones and the Wizard's Tower outpost, with another map to open up in following releases as the story progresses. To help you explore those maps, you'll also get access to a new, streamlined method to unlock your skyscale mount, plus new Masteries for flying mounts.
The raptor mount will also be unlocked for owners of Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure, although you'll still need Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire™ to train its associated Masteries.
Reintroducing the Skyscale
The skyscale mount originally launched with the finale of Living World Season 4, "War Eternal." It was unlocked by completing a series of achievements that required a significant time and material investment to reflect the skyscale's position as something of a prestige mount.
Four years into the future, we're telling a story in primarily aerial maps that take advantage of different types of travel and movement—and we're adding a parallel path for unlocking the skyscale and its masteries in Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure.
You'll be introduced to the new skyscale acquisition method through the expansion story by unlocking the Flight Training Mastery line. After training the first tier of the line, you'll unlock the new skyscale collection. This collection is a streamlined successor to the original; our primary goal was to simplify some of the steps while maintaining much of the collection's theming and story.
As we approached giving players reliable access to the skyscale in Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure explorable zones, we took what we learned from maps such as Dragonfall and sought to improve the mount "rental" experience. In the new expansion maps, you do not need to go to a specific location in the map to hop on a skyscale—you'll have access to the mount button just like players who have permanently unlocked it, allowing you to mount whenever you choose. Assuming you get to Skywatch Archipelago, the first new explorable zone, by following the normal story progression, you'll have skyscale access when you first set foot there.
Flight Training Mastery
If you aren't familiar with Guild Wars 2's account-wide progression system, check out the official wiki article on Mastery to get a primer. The new Flight Training Mastery line includes parallel skill unlocks from the original Skyscale Mastery line, a new skyscale skill, and new interactions with other travel and exploration Masteries. As you can see in the chart below, players who have already trained certain Masteries (or who go back to unlock and train them later) will have additional benefits: their mounts' Air Rescue and Wall Launch skill will be upgraded to reflect their dedication.
Updrafts and ley lines across Tyria will be compatible with the new combination Masteries that allow flying mounts—the griffon and the skyscale—to take advantage of them. These types of complementary effects continue to expand the opportunities for exploration, and they give riders new ways to pull off incredible aerial feats.

*Names are subject to change. ** In our June 27 blog about the skyscale and Masteries, a formatting error caused the text associated with Tier 6 to display in incorrect cells, implying that there was an additional effect for players who had trained both Masteries. This error has been corrected.
We're excited for you to get your hands on the skyscale's new Fireball skill. It flows well with their other tricks, and it opens up some neat combat options. The new Fireball skill allows you to precisely aim where the projectile will land using your cursor. Similar to the siege turtle passenger's ability to fire projectiles at enemies, this new Fireball skill will not cause a dismount, so you can soar through the skies and take down threats from above—whether they're on the ground or in the air.
The Kryptis have aerial threats of their own that require your skyscale skills to take care of, and you'll be able to practice those skills via adventures throughout Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure to ensure you're prepared for any threat the Kryptis bring to you. One of the explorable zones includes a new Skyscale Target Practice adventure that'll have you racing around and spitting Fireballs left and right.
After you complete the Flight Training Mastery line and the Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure skyscale collection, a new collection will open up that awards a Kryptis-themed skyscale skin.
Prepare for Takeoff
The new skyscale unlock method and Masteries will all be available on August 22 with the initial release of Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure. We'll be back before then with more news about incoming features, and you can prepurchase any time before launch to start playing the moment the release goes live, in addition to securing prepurchase rewards like the Demon Hunter title.
See you in the skies of Tyria!
First Contact: The Kryptis and Rift Hunting
On August 22, Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure™ will begin, taking us to soaring heights and telling a new story wrapped up in ancient mysteries. Last week, you heard from the Narrative team about the transition from the Elder Dragon saga, which began with the launch of Guild Wars 2 in 2012, into a brand-new adventure. And on that adventure, you'll have a fresh, fleshy army of foes to face.
Beings from beyond the Mists
Early in Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure, you'll discover rifts—tears in the fabric of reality—across Tyria through which strange, demonic forces are appearing. These enemies are the Kryptis. We're not going to get into the rest of the story in this blog (that's what the game is for), but for today's purposes it's enough to know that the Kryptis are mean and meaty, and it's up to you and some new allies to find a way to stop their incursions from the Mists.
Chief among your new allies will be members of the Astral Ward (an organization you'll have to play the story to learn more about). After joining forces with them, you'll get access to the Heart of the Obscure (a mysterious and powerful ancient artifact) and its associated Mastery line—essential components in your quest to hunt and close rifts. While the story continues on from there, rift hunting will become a permanent option for on-demand open-world content.
Rift Hunting
With the help of the Heart of the Obscure, you'll find nascent rifts across Tyria. Fully opening a rift will reveal Kryptis invaders who were roaming Tyria while hidden from sight. Defeat enough of them, and a more formidable champion will appear for you to face. Taking down the final Kryptis target will allow you to close the rift and will grant you Kryptis essence: powerful material you can use to craft weapons, armor, legendary armor, and bait to lure out deadlier Kryptis from rifts.
At launch, you'll be able to find rifts in several explorable zones in Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure areas, central Tyria, Cantha, and the Crystal Desert. Rift activity in explorable zones not associated with Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure will cycle on a weekly basis. If you use the Heart of the Obscure in maps without active Kryptis rifts, you'll get pointed to those that have them. In a future update, you'll be able to progress to even deadlier hunts designed for larger groups of players.
The enemies coming out of a rift scale with the size of the group fighting it. That means that you can party up with friends for rift hunts, weave them into other open-world activities you're doing, and even help out if you come across a stranger fighting to close a rift in the wild.
We'll be sharing more details about other things to look forward to in Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure between now and launch on August 22, so check back next week!

After the Dragon Cycle
Hi! Indigo here. I am the Narrative Lead on Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure™—one member in a team of passionate developers. Before Secrets of the Obscure drops in just a few weeks, I'd love to walk you through some of the questions we tackled as we started carving a new path for Tyria.
Disclaimer: We're going to stay pretty high level here, but be mindful of some minor teasers ahead—and major spoilers for previous expansions.
After we wrapped on Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons™ and our ten-year saga of the dragon cycle came to an end, we found ourselves at a critical point in the story of Guild Wars 2. There were quite a few directions that we were really interested in pursuing—we've got tons of stories in Tyria left to tell (from mysteries we've hinted at in years past to completely novel ideas). After all, the world is only just finding its footing following the end of the dragon cycle, a global affliction that promised certain destruction until Soo-Won's death in Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons. We had a lot to say, so the question was: Where do we start?
We've only explored a small portion of Tyria to date—and even then, a great deal of the world we do know has vastly changed over the events of the last eleven real-world years. We want to dig into that with more focused, self-contained stories, and we hope to bring each of these into the limelight as we see Tyria react and unravel to a future without chaos (well, without dragon-centric chaos). But before we slow things down and explore modern Tyria, we opted for something a little more mysterious to mark the beginning of this new arc.
We had a handful of frontrunners, but a franchise-long mystery quickly became our leading focus: the Wizard's Tower.
The Wizard's Tower
The Wizard's Tower and its creator are some of Tyria's best-kept secrets. Dating back to the original Guild Wars®, it's taken up residence on the Tyrian horizon since the beginning. All Tyria knew was that it was supposedly owned by a wizard named Isgarren—although he's never been physically seen—and that a few individuals had tried to breach its walls (looking at you, Galrath). During the Guild Wars 2 era, it rested above the hamlet of Garenhoff until we plucked it out of the sky in the June 27 update. Aside from a couple of teasers over the years, we've shielded the truth about Isgarren and his mysterious tower…until now.
The Wizard's Tower provided the perfect canvas to tell a very different story—one that spans thousands of years. Focusing on Isgarren, the Wizard's Tower, and the Astral Ward allowed us to dive into some of the deepest crevices of our lore—we're talking ancient beings, whispers of long-ago wars, and buried secrets. We'll be fighting an entirely new enemy faction only subtly teased in content in the past.
It's a story that lit a flame under the development team, too. Over the years, almost every team wanted to utilize the Wizard's Tower—from raids and fractals to story. But no single idea landed where we wanted to take it. Giving the Wizard's Tower an entire expansion felt like the best way to honor what is now a multigame mystery.
With the dragon story bookmarked at Aurene's temporary departure, the team was eager to let off some steam and work on something a little wild. The Wizard's Tower was just as exciting to us as it has been for the community to speculate about all these years. When we managed to wiggle it in to just about every pitch we had for the fourth expansion, we knew we had our topic.
The Commander's Journey
Given that Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure is going to be something of a fresh start for us as a narrative, I worked with Matthew Medina, the expansion's Narrative Design Lead, to send the commander on a journey absent their usual comrades. We thought that this would make the story as exciting and bewildering to the commander as a character as it would be for the player. At the top of the story, a mission goes awry and we're pulled into unexplored territory (physically and intellectually). By isolating the commander from their support group—and thus, their typical problem-solving catalysts—we're able to completely immerse the player character in this darker, more mystical facet of Tyria as the Astral Ward battles against the threat of the Kryptis.
More than that, the world state of Tyria is at such a critical turning point. With the threat of the Elder Dragons calmed and our prismatic utility knife Aurene taking a good ol' nap somewhere secluded, all of our friends are busy with their lives now—and some of them are playing crucial roles in rebuilding the world. Kasmeer and Jory, recently engaged, have established positions in the Krytan political system. Crecia and Rytlock are facing the Khan-Ur election— and heck, they've got a lot to cope with following The Icebrood Saga. Taimi is burrowed in Joon's lab, solving every crisis she possibly can with our Canthan inventors. Gorrik and Rama have the agency, and Braham is probably thriving in some much-needed therapy. All these characters have served as guiding lights to the commander, and they have shaped our journey. We're excited to give you glimpses into their post-dragon lives when we dig into those local stories about Tyria's revival, but before that, it's time the commander took a journey of their own.
There is one exception to this rule, though…
Zojja
Zojja is a character who has been mysteriously AWOL since the events of Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns™, where she endured some pretty awful injuries after being trapped inside of that blighting pod. While I don't want to spoil her journey, I can say that it was an emotional one. We have years of lost ground to cover, and our favorite golemancer has been doing some serious soul searching. Like the commander will have in Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure, Zojja needed a journey of her own.
I'll keep that story under my hat for now; getting to explore the depths of Zojja's self-discovery was a delight. In the middle of our fight against the Kryptis, we're going to have some incredibly tender and vulnerable moments with our asuran ally.
The Kryptis
The Kryptis are one of the…meatier enemies we've fought to date. Finding a new enemy force that touched on past lore but was also fresh and exciting to long-term players was a significant goal of ours (and a very interesting challenge from a worldbuilding perspective). Creatures of the demon realm; it's been a hot minute since we've faced off against foes from across the Mists. With the exception of a few Kryptis that have wiggled their way through Tyria's back door in the past, we haven't spent a lot of time with these guys before. They're fleshy, they're horrifying, and they're eager to take us out. But they're not necessarily a world-ending threat, per se, as menacing as they are. We just got done with the Elder Dragons, after all.
As you dive into Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure and fight back against the Kryptis, you'll unravel a much more personal rivalry between some of our key players—one that has lasted for over a millennium. Better yet, after we've completed the first leg of the story high above the cloud cover of Tyria, we're going to continue this journey in a much more…curious environment.
Tyria, Continued
Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure will set the pace as Tyria looks to the future. There are whole facets of the world that we've yet to explore, much like the Wizard's Tower and the fractured archipelago that we'll be ascending to in just a few weeks. Beyond that, Tyria has a lot of healing to do. The sylvari need to recover from the events of Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns; the charr and norn are on the mend following The Icebrood Saga. Cantha has been revealed to the world. Heck, the Pact needs a new purpose. And we're about to meet the Astral Ward. Tyria's at a turning point.
But before Tyria can truly heal, we're going to take you on a cosmic journey. From one player who's spent thousands of hours digging into Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 to our community: we're excited to open a new door.
I'll see you in the game!

Relics Bring New Equipment to Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure
Today we're excited to share details about one of the upcoming features in Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure™ that will offer players new opportunities to customize their character's combat prowess: relics. If you missed last month's announcement, you can still find all the information in our blogs on combat, story and challenges, and rewards, or on the official site.
Designing Relics
During February's studio update, we discussed our commitment to spending our development resources on improving core systems and features of Guild Wars 2. As part of that focus, we identified the rune system as needing a fresh coat of paint. As they exist now, runes offer attribute increases and a bonus special effect for wearing a complete set of six. Some rune sets were selected infrequently due to the stats they provided, leaving some interesting bonus effects underutilized. After the expansion's August 22 release, rune sets will continue to provide the same attribute bonuses they currently do. You will be able to choose a special combat effect by adding a brand-new equipment type called a relic to its own dedicated slot.
Separating the attribute choices from the bonus effects provides better flexibility and control in build customization, and we're excited to see the combinations that the community will come up with! This also allows us to design relics that focus on player interactivity rather than mostly passive bonuses, and this direction is more aligned with our goal for those special effects.
Core and Expansion Relics
Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure will release with forty core relics and twelve expansion relics. Core relics, which have effects inspired by many of the current rune sets, will be available to all players regardless of expansion ownership. Additional core relics will be added over time as part of our ongoing commitment to improving our core game features; our overarching goal is to offer more viable choices despite fewer overall options.
When the expansion launches, each character of level 60 or above will receive a relic chest to get you started in the new system with a choice of three core relics (exact number subject to change). Additional core relics will not be account bound and can be crafted and shared between players.
Let's look at an example of a core relic! Please note that the effects of the relics shown may not be final.
Relic of the Zephyrite Summon crystals that apply protection and resolution to allies after using an elite skill. Crystal duration scales with the recharge of the used skill.
If you have Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure, you'll be able to acquire expansion relics. While these are not more powerful than core relics, expansion relics allow us to design effects that are more intricate, bold, and thrilling! They will also be closely tied to the narrative of the expansion, revealing some tidbits for those with a penchant for lore. Expansion relics can be obtained through collections, achievements, or story progression. While you can't trade them, they are available to all characters on your account by visiting an NPC relic vendor after you've unlocked them.
Here's an example of an expansion relic:
Relic of the Wizard's Tower After using an elite skill, shield yourself with a projectile-reflecting barrier while summoning a wave that pulls enemies toward you.
Relics of both types will function in PvE, PvP, and WvW game modes, though some relics will have slight changes in tuning and functionality to better fit competitive environments. After Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure launches, we'll also be adding more relics during our quarterly updates to shake up builds and give players more opportunities to express themselves on the battlefield!
Legendary Runes and Relics
We believe the introduction of relics will allow for more meaningful choices when building your characters. To accomplish this, some of the functionality of legendary runes will move to the new relic slot. While legendary runes will no longer have six-tier bonus effects, they will retain their attribute-swapping flexibility.
Legendary relics will be introduced to Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure during one of the quarterly releases in 2024. These prestigious relics will offer the convenience of freely swapping between the various relic effects. Players who have already crafted legendary runes will be compensated with significant progress toward unlocking legendary relics. In fact, each of the seven legendary runes you create will unlock further progress toward these relics. We'll be able to share more details when we are closer to the launch of legendary relics next year.
Let the Theorycrafting Begin!
Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure will give players virtually endless new possibilities for their characters' builds! Independent rune attributes and relic effects are just one way to expand your choices; don't forget that each profession will also have access to additional weapon combinations. We hope you enjoyed this deep dive into the world of relics, and we'll have more expansion info coming soon as we approach the expansion launch on August 22.
