Team ArenaNet's Extra Life Game Day is next week on November 4. We're overwhelmed by your generosity and community spirit; with our community's power we've already raised over ${{update day before blog post}} USD this year to support Children's Miracle Network hospitals! Our ultimate goal is to bring our lifetime total funds raised to $625,000 USD, and we need your help to do it.
Your donations will help children's hospitals across the United States and Canada care for ill and critically injured children whose families need support. To donate to Extra Life now, visit the Team ArenaNet page. If you'd like to help us reach our goal by streaming any game or telling your friends and family about Extra Life, choose to join Team ArenaNet when you sign up! If you want to form your own team, you can select "Create a sub team" when you sign up to join the ArenaNet Super Team.
The funds you raise as a member of Team ArenaNet will contribute to our overall donation total. As in previous years, if we reach the $25,000 USD donation goal, we'll match it to bring the total donation to $50,000!
Extra Life Game Day Livestream
On Game Day, members of Team ArenaNet participate in a 24-hour gaming marathon to raise funds, have fun, and hang out with the community. The stream begins on Friday, November 4 at noon Pacific Time (UTC-8) and ends on Saturday, November 5 at noon Pacific Time (UTC-8).
During the livestream, Team ArenaNet will play Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2, give some behind-the-scenes looks at game development, and more—including the traditional yearly head shaving. (It isn't an ArenaNet Extra Life event if we make it through with unscathed heads.) Join them in game or watch the stream on our official Twitch channel. We'll see you there!

New Player Guide: Guild Wars 2 Halloween Events
Greetings, new friends!
Given the recent deluge of brand-new Tyrian citizens, the Captain's Council of Lion's Arch has seen fit to release an informational missive regarding the activities of one Mad King Thorn and his yearly incursion into the streets of Lion's Arch.
Shadow of the Mad King
Shadow of the Mad King is Guild Wars 2's yearly Halloween-themed festival, and we do holiday events like no other. It's not just a short set of quests or a few cosmetics—it's an entirely new way to play the game. Loads of unique game modes will be available that can be used to expand your wardrobe, fill your wallet, and level up your character faster than ever before.
This content is available for free to all players.
For the next three weeks, you'll gain access to a new set of daily and annual achievements that will act as your guide to Guild Wars 2's unique set of festival celebrations. Shadow of the Mad King adds a number of activities that can be used to earn our Halloween festival currency, candy corn. It can be spent on new weapon skins, armor skins, miniatures, and more.
Getting Started
First, check your in-game mail for a letter from Magister Tassi containing an Invitation to the Mad Realm. Use this item to travel back and forth between Tyria and the Mad King's Labyrinth.
Lion's Arch is Tyria's Halloween celebration headquarters. Asura gate portals to Lion's Arch are available in major cities and can be used by any player who has purchased a Guild Wars 2 expansion or is at least level 35.
Players without access to Lion's Arch can travel to the Mad Realm from any of Guild Wars 2's starting zones:
Village of Shaemoor in Queensdale
Village of Smokestead in the Plains of Ashford
Snowlord's Gate in the Wayfarer Foothills
Village of Astorea in Caledon Forest
Soren Draa in Metrica Province
These locations are outside each starting city's main gate and can be freely teleported to by any character, regardless of which playable race you began the game as. Run to the candy corn icon on your map and speak to a Lunatic Boatmaster guarding a haunted door, and they'll whisk you away to your choice of Halloween activities.
Activities
The Mad King's Labyrinth
How's your inventory management? Clean out your bags and get ready for a loot waterfall. Squad up and take down the denizens of the labyrinth. Kill stuff, get loot. Open haunted doors around the labyrinth to spawn boss enemies or focus on the small fry while you make a circuit around this haunted maze.
Magic find is an account-wide attribute that increases your chance of receiving high-quality loot from slain enemies. When you're cleansing the Mad King's Labyrinth…you'll be slaying a lot of enemies. Make the most of it by picking up some Heroic Boosters or speak to Madame Cookie within the labyrinth to exchange candy corn for an enhancement to your magic find.
The Mad King's Clock Tower
Hop to the top of a viciously timed jumping puzzle before the deadly miasma below makes its way to you. Open the Magnificent Chest at the top once per day for—you guessed it—more sick loot.
Mad King Says…
Every two hours at the Grand Piazza in Lion's Arch, follow Mad King Thorn's commands and receive key fragments for your efforts. Collect three key fragments and you'll be able to open the Mad King's Chest. This chest is available once per day and will reward you with Trick-or-Treat Bags and some delicious Globs of Ectoplasm.
Ascent to Madness
Group up with up to four friends and take the fight to that despicable Oswald Thorn. He's still up to his Mad King Says antics, too, so keep your ears open for his commands. Defeat the Mad King once per day to earn Trick-or-Treat Bags and more.
Mad King's Raceway and Labyrinth Race
If you haven't tried out Guild Wars 2's unique mount system, now's a great chance. Speak with a Lunatic Boatmaster to enter one of the Mad King's many mount races. Even if you don't own a mount, you'll find rental mounts available by speaking to the Mad Stablehand nearby.
Lunatic Inquisition and Reaper's Rumble
If you're more of a PvP-oriented player, we've got something just for you! Take on your fellow Tyrians in the MOBA-style Reaper's Rumble, or escape from the Courtier's grasp in the tag-style Lunatic Inquisition. In the Mad King's Realm, speak to a Lunatic Boatman to enter these game modes. Victory rewards Trick-or-Treat Bags and the greatest reward of all—cold, hard coin.
Rewards
Once you've tired yourself out with our Halloween festivities, you might find that your constant looting has left you with…well…fewer available bag slots than is ideal. What do you do with all this stuff, anyway?
Trick-or-Treat Bags
The Mad King's mystery bags can contain anything from rare crafting materials to ultra-rare infusions and special weapon skins. Or maybe just some candy corn. Take your chances with opening the bags for the opportunity of a rare drop. Alternatively, sell them to other players on the Trading Post for a guaranteed win.
Candy Corn
Candy corn is as good as coin when Mad King Thorn is in town. One thousand pieces of candy corn can be exchanged for a Candy Corn Cob at candy corn vendors in Lion's Arch or any of the starting zones. You can also feed these candies to a Candy Corn Gobbler for random enhancements to experience, magic find, and more.
The Candy Corn Cobs can be spent at vendors in Lion's Arch for unique weapon skins, armor skins, miniatures, and other rewards. If you're not interested in that, they can also be sold on the Trading Post to other players for a tidy profit.
Enter The Mad King's Realm Today!
Clean up your bags and get ready to profit. Level up quicker than ever before. Beat up skeletons. Get loot. Take your friends with you on a journey to the labyrinth and get lost in the joy of exploration.
Play Guild Wars 2 for free now.
See you in the Mad Realm!
Shadow of the Mad King 2022 Is Live!
Ghostly greetings to all! Shadow of the Mad King begins today, and with it three whole fang-tastic weeks of trick-or-treating. New to Guild Wars 2? Forgotten how to navigate the labyrinth? We've got your spine...err...back! The guide below has everything you need to know.
Where to Go
First, check your in-game mail for a letter from Magister Tassi containing an Invitation to the Mad Realm.
Players without access to Lion's Arch can travel to the Mad Realm from the Village of Shaemoor in Queensdale, the Village of Smokestead in the Plains of Ashford, Snowlord's Gate in the Wayfarer Foothills, the Village of Astorea in Caledon Forest, and Soren Draa in Metrica Province. These locations are outside each starting city's main gate. Run to the candy corn icon on your map and speak to a Lunatic Boatmaster guarding a haunted door, and they'll whisk you away to your choice of eerie activities.
Haunted doors will also appear in Kessex Hills and Gendarran Fields throughout the event. Interact with the doors to trick-or-treat!
What to Do
During Halloween, King Oswald Thorn's capricious spirit can manifest in Tyria—and Tyria's citizens can cross into Thorn's Mad Realm.
Lion's Arch
The city of Lion's Arch is transformed with scary decorations and a gloomy autumn glow! Every two hours, Mad King Thorn will gather his "subjects" (anyone within shouting distance) to play a game. Perform the emotes he commands you to—but only if he calls out, "Your Mad King says." If you do well, you'll receive keys to unlock the Mad King's Chest.
The Grand Piazza also features seasonal vendors and doors to Shadow of the Mad King activities.
The Mad Realm
Mad King's Labyrinth
Battle hordes of Halloween creatures, race your mounts, and trick-or-treat at haunted doors through the twists and turns of a macabre maze. It's a great way to gain experience for your characters and Trick-or-Treat Bags full of goodies, especially if you team up with other players to explore. Stay on your toes, though—powerful enemies like the Grand High Viscount of Candy Corn, the legendary Skeletal Lich, and the Labyrinthine Horror will make nougat of the unwary.
Mad King's Clock Tower
Hop to the top of a vicious timed jumping puzzle before the deadly miasma below makes its way to you.
Ascent to Madness
Face Mad King Thorn himself! This dungeon encounter is intended for players of all skill levels and can be entered from Lion's Arch.
Mad King's Raceway
Take your mounts out for a spin in time trials and races against other players. Springer, jackal, and roller beetle rentals are available if you need a steed.
Minigames
Speak to a Lunatic Boatmaster to participate in Reaper's Rumble or Lunatic Inquisition.
Rewards
Become the spookiest ghoul in the Labyrinth...or die trying. Hahaha-HA! (It's okay, you can just waypoint.) Shadow of the Mad King activities award Trick-or-Treat Bags containing a vast selection of Halloween goods. The primary currency is candy corn, which can be traded to special vendors for minis, armor skins, recipes, and more.
Many unique rewards are obtained by completing achievements. You'll find information on the Shadow of the Mad King achievements and their rewards in your Hero panel under the Daily and Festivals categories.
New Equipment Skins
Weapons heavy with rattling chains, clawed gloves emerging from the darkness—this year, we've got everything. Complete the annual Halloween Rituals achievement to obtain them.
Chained Chest (Tier 1)
Clawing Shadow Gloves Box (Tier 2)
Clear your way with a terrifyingly beautiful candlestick or become the headless gourmet chef of wild pumpkins. New exotic weapons can be found in the Courtly Weapon Chest or purchased with Candy Corn Cobs from Sparking Stone in Lion's Arch.
Nightmare Splitter Axe
Harvester's Grin Staff
Pale Light's Companion Torch
Candy Corn Exchange
What's Halloween without a candy corn extravaganza, right? Use your delicious treats to get new miniatures, traditional Halloween rewards, and more!
Mini Fluffy Black Cat
Mini Black Labrador
Happy Haunting, Tyrians!
Team ArenaNet for Extra Life 2022
For the sixth year in a row, Team ArenaNet will be supporting Extra Life!
What is Extra Life?
During the annual Extra Life marathon, teams and individuals from many gaming communities stream games for twenty-four hours to raise funds in support of Children's Miracle Network, a network of 170 nonprofit children's hospitals throughout the United States and Canada. Donations pay healthcare costs for critically ill and injured children not covered by health insurance or Medicaid, help hospitals purchase pediatric medical equipment, and fund disease research. Children's Miracle Network Hospitals provide 32 million treatments to children every year thanks to events like Extra Life .
Since 2017, Team ArenaNet has raised over $500,000 in donations for Children's Miracle Network hospitals. Our global community of players has come together each year to support this mission, and we're calling on you all to help us break our fundraising record once again!
During Extra Life 2021, you helped us raise over $100,000 in a single day. This year, we're aiming even higher. Our goal is to raise $125,000 by the end of our Game Day livestream, and we need help from the legendary heroes of Tyria to make it happen.
This year, during our 24-hour Game Day stream, we have a variety of exciting in-game and out-of-game events planned. Additionally, we'll be running our second Twitch Drops campaign during the Extra Life Game Day event. We'll reveal some details about these in the coming weeks, so keep your eyes peeled for more updates from us soon!
Join Team ArenaNet
We're all working toward the same goal for Extra Life: helping kids! Everyone is invited to be part of Team ArenaNet. To join, visit the official Extra Life website and choose "Team ArenaNet" as your team when you sign up.
If you'd like to create your own team, we invite you to join the ArenaNet Super Team. When you sign up on the official Extra Life website, choose "Create a Sub Team." Your team will still have its own page, members, and fundraising goals, but you'll be recognized on the ArenaNet Super Team's leaderboards and the funds you raise will contribute to the overall Super Team total.
Once you join Team ArenaNet, all donations will contribute to our overall donation total. As in previous years, once we hit the $25,000 goal we'll match that donation to bring the total to $50,000.
You don't have to livestream Guild Wars 2 to team up with us. You can stream a game of your choice, or raise funds by telling your friends, family, and colleagues how they can donate to support Extra Life.
Game Day: November 4
The ArenaNet team members are excited to kick off this year's 24-hour streaming marathon. Our Extra Life Game Day event begins at 12:00 PM Pacific Time on Friday, November 4 and ends at 12:00 PM on Saturday, November 5.
You can watch the stream on our official Twitch channel. Stay tuned for more information on the fun we have planned—and visit the Team ArenaNet page to sign up or donate!

General
The Jormag legendary variant skin collection is now available. Speak with Leivas after unlocking an Aurene-based legendary weapon to begin this collection!
You can automatically salvage crafted items for research notes from the recipe window. Using this option does not consume charges from your research kits; you don’t even need to have one in your inventory.
Item tooltips now display the types of salvage kits that can be used on that item.
Items that were salvageable prior to the 9/13/2022 update and were incorrectly flagged as unsalvageable, such as collection items for legendary trinkets, are now salvageable again.
World Polish
Fixed an issue that prevented the Hero panel preview from displaying correctly on high-resolution monitors.
Changed the environment map used for lighting in the character selection screen to match the Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons background.
Fixed an issue that prevented some players from entering the Tower of Nightmares encounter in a squad.
Fixed an issue that blocked players from accessing Canach's Lair through the Scrying Pool in the Eye of the North.
Increased the frequency of the Desert Highlands event chain that begins with "Defend Second Spear Nayrim from the Awakened" to make it more accessible for players completing their griffon mount collection.
Fixed an issue that prevented players who completed the story mission The Nightmare Unveiled from being awarded the achievement The Nightmare Unveiled (Historical).
Fixed an issue that caused the waypoint in the squad version of the Tower of Nightmares encounter to direct players to the public version of the instance.
Raids
Fixed an issue that caused Emboldened mode to reactivate after defeating challenge mode bosses, preventing some players from receiving the correct rewards for the encounter.
Following our previous summer roadmap, we'd like to give you a high-level look at our plans for Guild Wars 2 for the remainder of the year.
Gameplay Systems Updates
October 4 Profession Balance Update
Following our most recent balance update preview, we've taken in some of your feedback and made adjustments to the upcoming competitive-focused October 4 profession balance update. We plan on continuing to offer previews of our profession balance updates and using your valuable feedback to help inform our balance decisions. We'll have the final notes available on the official Guild Wars 2 forums on October 4.
October 14 WvW World Restructuring Beta 6
The sixth beta event for phase one of the WvW World Restructuring feature will take place from October 14 through October 21. The beta event will begin and end with each region's respective weekly World vs World match reset. If you're unfamiliar with this feature or our plans for it, you can learn more about it here.
During the beta, you'll be able to select one of the new WvW-exclusive War Machine weapon skins for completing an achievement tied to beta participation. We'll also be bringing back the Call of War special event. Earn increased WvW rewards including double WvW experience, increased WvW reward track progress, and a bonus to magic find while in WvW.
The World Restructuring system allows you to play WvW with a guild of your choice while the beta event is active. The in-game option found in the WvW menu that allows you to select a WvW guild will be available on October 7. You must make your guild selection by 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time (UTC-7) on October 13 or you may be matchmade as an individual for the beta event (i.e., you and your guild will be placed on different teams).
November 29 Profession Balance Update
With our October 4 update, we focused primarily on our competitive game modes. Going forward, we'd like our future profession balance updates to contain changes relevant to all game modes. We plan on having a preview for this update available for public feedback on the official Guild Wars 2 forums a few weeks before the update releases. We'll be following the conversation and adjusting our plans as needed.
Jormag and Primordus Legendary Variants
Following our previous Aurene-based legendary weapon skin variants, we have two more skin types coming this year inspired by the Elder Dragons Jormag and Primordus. After binding an Aurene-based legendary weapon to your Legendary Armory, visit Leivas at Aurene's Enclave in Seitung Province to unlock the collection The Legendary Facets of Aurene and begin working on acquiring these new skins.
You'll be able to begin unlocking the Jormag legendary skin variants in the October 4 update and the Primordus legendary skin variants in the November 29 update.
Extra Life
For the sixth year in a row, Team ArenaNet will be supporting Extra Life! We have a variety of exciting in-game and out-of-game events planned during this year's 24-hour Game Day stream. Join us in supporting Children's Miracle Network on November 4!
