Gun Devil One-year Anniversary!

Hey you goddamn ppls, happy one-year anniversary!

It has now been a whole year since Gun Devil was released, and today, I want to take a moment to celebrate your awesome feedback and passion for the game. At the time of writing this, the game has received 987 reviews and has been marked as Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam!
Thank you all for this, it brings me great joy to see you all having fun.

Gun Devil's future

I want to touch the future plans of the game, my thoughts, and if there will ever be a sequel.
To cut to the chase, the short answer is no, but it’s also maybe.
I don’t want to get your hopes up though, so please stick with a no for now.
The reason I say maybe is that I’ve had a few sparks to continue here and there. So probably, the longer I wait on resuming work on it, the more likely I’ll have fun with it again.

I wish I could come here and give good news regarding a follow-up, new content for the game, or something similar. However, I can't force myself to do something I don't want to do. The end result wouldn’t be good.

That said, I did add some minor stuff for the occasion, which are:

  • 7 new achievements
  • A fanart section in the main menu to celebrate your creations

If you got any fanart laying around or want to make some, don't hesitate to join our Discord and post it there for us to see. I'll likely feature it in the game also!

Developing Gun Devil

As explained at the end of the game and in the Steam forums, working on the game hasn't been easy. The 2 year journey of making this was quite unfun and frustrating, mostly due to the paperwork effort of trying to get it funded and landing a publishing deal. It involved a constant stream of declines, which got really annoying and time consuming.
It’s a tricky game to pitch, cus I want the game to be based on really silly / idiotic humor and include tasteful nudity.

After releasing the game, I did try again a little to find some publishers, but not hard enough since my true will to proceed wasn't really there anymore. Even if I did find someone interested, I'm not sure I'd be able to accept the deal.

Time will tell if I'll get back to work on this game again or not, cus if the passion isn't there then it can't be done sadly.

Current projects

So, if I’m not making Gun Devil, what am I doing nowadays?
Currently, I'm working on Death In Abyss, a fast-paced deep-sea action submarine game where you engage in battles against alien-like sea monsters. More info below:

Working on this game has been extremely refreshing, it has especially given me a nice break from making 2D games. I really loved Star Fox Assault from my childhood, especially the flight sections. Haven’t really played Star Fox 64 though which is a bit odd, only like 1-2 stages, but oh well lol.

Financial stuff

Life's pretty good atm money-wise!
Last autumn, Death In Abyss received an amazing production grant of 22,500 USD, allowing me to work full-time on the game.
Additionally, having other games on the store, both on PC and console, further strengthens the financial aspect. While my current games aren't enough to sustain me completely yet, I'm confident I'll eventually get there.
These days, I can actually relax a little and have fun without worrying too much about rent, which is a big thumbs up! I love creating stuff, and I hope to continue doing this for a long time.

If you want to help sustain my full-time gamedev dream, I do have a Patreon just for this. Thank you so much if you do decide to pledge, you’re goddamn cool.

In closing

I want to share all the fanart I could find from you guys, these are awesome!
Once again, thank you all for playing Gun Devil and showing such love for it. Witnessing people have fun is the core reason why I make games. It's a unique energy that's hard to find anywhere else.

Cheers, until next time!

Nominate Gun Devil for the 'Best Game you suck at' Steam Award!

2023 is approaching, and godDAMN this has been one of the most exciting years in my gamedev career thus far. Big thanks to all of you who've played the game, very thrilling to see your positive feedback on the game!

Steam just launched their annual award thing, and for fun I thought it'd be cool to attend with this game lol.
I think we've got the best shot at "Best Game you suck at", so if you don't know what category to nominate Gun Devil in, then use this.

Thanks again for playing, you're all badass.

10,000+ Downloads within 48 hours!

This is so cool, thank you everyone for playing! Very fun to see you're all having a good time.

I've also adressed some issues, so here's a mini patch note thing:

  • Dog Bastard: Adjusted the big spawn of dogs by adding a little delay. Should give player enough time to get in position before the blast.
  • Stage 4: Tweaked the level design a little just before reaching the checkpoint. Many people seem'd to accidently do the dash down move then die like an idiot right infront of it lol
  • Stage 1: Extended this stage a little to properly introduce player to the horizontal dash. It deals damage to objects and enemies, and I'm not sure this is something people realize right away?
  • Further fine-tuned player controller, especially dash down + jump move. Should be more responsive and reliable now.
  • Input sensitivity on dash down got fine-tuned for controller, cus it was quite easy to accidentally use it.
  • Added screenshake adjust option, in case people don't want stuff to be shaky.

Let me know if you encounter other issues or have other suggestions, either by commenting here or joining our discord where we do talking about talks talking.

Again, thank you all for playing, giving feedback and spreading the word about the game. You're all badass.
Right now the game is actually trending on the main trending section on Steam, which is something I never expected. Let's keep it up!
