GUTS UNIVERSE - VIP GIG

GUTS’ VIP Gig is a gigantic stadium designed specifically for concerts and music shows. It exists inside the largest arena’s site in the world, called the “The Neverending Woodstock”, featuring 16 different stadiums, each one different from the previous one. Each stadium holds from 800.000 to 10 million people, over multiple layers around its centre (each layer is called a “circle”). The site is localized in the flooded region of Neo Magellan, a brand new city known for being a technological pole in the plateaus of the western part of Antarctica, one of the few places on Earth that still keeps a cool temperature and remained above the sea level (although there is no more ice there, just water and flooded lands).

The price of each show’s entrance is directly related to the circle someone’s in: the closest to the centre, the most expensive it is. There are stadiums with more than 20 different circles, so the price of a concert can greatly vary, allowing almost anyone to watch the shows, from the most unknown people to the greatest celebrities.

The VIP Gig capacity is 4 million people, around 13 different circles. In the same show, a single ticket in the innermost circle can cost the savings of a lifetime of a regular person, while the most peripheral one can cost as much as a regular dinner. It was created 11 years ago, with the sponsoring of the world famous performer Lawrence Blaze, who besides lending his name to the marketing of the place, got to name it, choosing the name “VIP Gig”.

The VIP Gig hosts many different shows, most of them from pop bands, but Lawrence’s shows has absolute priority over any other. With the proper marketing, this arena became a synonym of class and popularity and the most fanciest artists starting developing the urge to perform there. A single show on the VIP Gig could determine the future of someone as an artist.

As time went by, the arena underwent some improvements, specially to make things more interesting for the GUTS matches being held there. The first modification was Lawrence’s razor hat, that he started throwing at the fighters in the middle of the match. Another modification was the flamethrowers: they used to be just a part of a pyrotechnics sideshow, but they were repositioned to hurt the GUTS contestants while they were fighting. The flamethrowers are shot from giant speakers, programmed to shoot flames at a determined location from time to time. The last modification made for GUTS were the “Deft Lasers”, who could easily dismember a person on a single hit, and also contributed to the visual spectacle.

GUTS: THE BLOODIEST HAZARDS!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNmnYdS5cxU
There are many ways to dismember your opponents on GUTS and throwing them in the hazards is just one of them!

Try pushing your rivals into the traps with knockback moves!

Special moves and the last attack of a combo usually have a great knockback!

Be careful and do not throw yourself into a trap!

GUTS INNOVATIONS AND INSPIRATIONS

GUTS brings many innovations - concerning the other fighting games currently in the market. We say it’s a fighting and dismembering game, not only a fighting game. That’s because every game mechanic is oriented towards the dismembering feature.

The main difference, visible from the start, is that GUTS doesn’t have a Health Bar. Fighters must rip off their foes’ arms and legs and deliver a final dismembering blow to win. So it’s useless to keep kicking and punching your way around: you must dismember to win.

There are a few different ways to dismember a foe: the main method are the GUTS Moves, special unblockable attacks that rip off a limb when they connect. You keep fighting, gradually filling in the GUTS bar - it completely fills up with 12 connected moves, in general - and then deliver a GUTS Move.

The second way to dismember a foe is another unique feature in GUTS: the Hazards, or Traps. Each stage has specific traps, with distinct behaviours, that dismember the fighters when they touch them. So using the moves’ knockback to throw your rival into a Hazard is the second greatest strategy in GUTS. For example: in the Last Resort stage, there are electrical saws floating over some areas, so attacks that throw your opponent into the air are very useful. In the Goryland amusement park stage, on the other hand, there is a killer roller coaster that crosses the stage right in the middle of the arena, ripping off the limbs of whoever is there at the time. This Hazards mechanic introduces a zoning dynamics that’s very important to the gameplay.

Another core innovative feature for the competitive scenario is that the character’s move sets are limb-oriented: when you lose an arm or a leg, your whole Moveset changes. In the beginning of the fight, each character has eight special moves: two in the right arm, two in the left arm, two in the right leg, two in the left leg. When a limb is lost, those special moves are lost as well. The player must then adapt to the new context and fight with whichever he has left. At the same time, the player that lost the limb gets a multiplier in the GUTS Bar gain, depending on which member was ripped off, allowing him to fill the GUTS Bar faster and change the outcome.

The coolest thing is: in the moment a GUTS Move is activated, the attacking player chooses which member he wants to remove from his rival, in the case the move connects - and the defending player can try to guess which member was chosen and defend himself from the GUTS Move using a special movement that consume his limited resources. This adds a tremendous strategic layer and a few mind games for the game.

Another new feature is the U-Points system. Those points are used to unleash a few special movements: heal and recover a lost limb; throw a torn limb into your rival (instantly dismembering if it hits); fill the GUTS bar automatically; use an arena object; evade an opponent move (including a GUTS Move) with a dodge; block a GUTS Move by guessing which limb your rival chose to dismember. The thing here is that the player just receive U-Points when he lost limbs - this mechanic, consequently, intends to balance the match in favour of the losing player, granting him the chance of epic comebacks.

An element that players are going to miss is the fight timer. There is no time limit in GUTS - to innovate here, we created a series of interventions and progressively aggressive perks, that inevitably drive the fight to a final showdown. We were inspired by the old Bomberman games, when the stage began to shrink as the match went on. For example: after a few time, healing limbs is no longer permitted; the GUTS Bar starts to fill up faster, or even remains complete all the time, turning the match into a festival of GUTS Moves to the end.

Talking about the button commands, we decided that all the special moves will be activated with a quarter-circle, the direction (forward or backward) and the action button. And the GUTS Moves will require a single button, without directional inputs. We don’t want to create bibles of command lists that the player must remember. We want the players to win with both strategy and skill, but if you have dozens of different inputs for a dozen different characters, the player will be required to study as if it was an exam in order to master the game. We don’t want that. We want you to pick a fighter and know already all of it’s moves - and find out the behaviours and perks of each move using them instead of memorizing an instruction manual.

The combos are classified in two different levels: the practical combos and the complex combos. The practical combos are used with a single limb, by pressing the same button repeatedly with a large time window to connect the moves. This allow the newcomers to do interesting combos from the start and, at the same time, guarantees that even a fighter with a single limb will be able to perform a few combos. The complex combos, on the other hand, combine different limbs and require a little more timing and practice, but are far longer and stronger, throwing the rival further and increasing the chances to push him into a Hazard.

We also put a lot of effort into the game’s story, developing a deep and complex lore. The universe of GUTS is extremely rich: a hyper consumerist world, totally focused on the celebrities’s culture and social popularity, greatly inspired by Black Mirror and other high tech distopies. We built spherical characters, always with a lot of care and creativity: they have their own complex and interesting stories and, in the story mode of the game, each character will have two different endings: one of them is secret and much harder to unlock.

We studied many, many fighting games to create GUTS. In terms of gameplay, the greatest references are Street Fighter IV and Smash Bros Melee. But we studied the frame data and the feeling of the following games: Street Fighter II, IV and V; Street Fighter Alpha 2; Mortal Kombat I, II, III, IX and X; Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator; Super Smash Bros; Smash Bros Melee; Smash 4; Time Killers; Primal Rage; Biofreaks; Rivals of Aether; Brawlhalla; Thrill Kill (a brutal game release by EA); WWF Wrestlemania; WWF Raw; WWE 2017. And also a few non-fighting games that still contributed somehow for the creation of the game, like Streets Of Rage; Overwatch; Metal Warriors; and the Batman Arkham series.

GUTS UNIVERSE - GORYLAND

Goryland is a GUTS show theme parked, created by D.B. Judge to promote the show and explore its potential, creating gory attractions and toys for children and adults to enjoy themselves. Besides being a thematic park, Goryland is also an official GUTS arena: real GUTS matches are hosted there, on a special place designed specially for that. People visiting the park have the opportunity of watching those matches live, sometimes even getting the chance of going home with a torn limb thrown into the crowd or receiving a shower of blood.

There are several attractions there, all of them related to something gory or violent. Since watching violence is now seen as a good thing, everything is as gory as it can be, from a rollercoaster full of sharp blades to bodyparts shaped balloons and thrash cans resembling a human being with a bloody hole in it’s stomach. Children are especially thrilled to visit the park, which is very family friendly. Most people’s dream is to travel there just to visit the park. There are huge hotels inside the park and they all offer long duration passes for people who intend to come there multiple times (such as the Single GUTS Season Pass, which covers all the days for a single GUTS season). They also sell tickets to all GUTS matches and offer VIP footages of the show, available only there, such as the backstage of the GUTS trials.

All the attractions there were either created or approved by D.B. Judge and they cover a multitude of violent weapons, such as giant saws or blood spilling machines (all of them perfectly safe for the public, of course), and some of them even interact with the matches being held there: the roller coaster’s track goes through the middle of the GUTS arena and the fighters have to be aware of it all the time, or they may be trampled by the kart full of GUTS fans (a lot of attractions are actually considered GUTS hazards during the fights). The park also features attractions about previous GUTS champions and contestants: some of them show little footages from previous fights, high tech simulation of them and even there is even a virtual reality attraction where the visitors can experiment the fun of being a GUTS fighter (without the pain of being dismembered in real life, of course). The place is also famous for featuring previous GUTS celebrities in special events held along the year, such as the Christmas Event and the Halloween Event.

Although the park theme is about violence, there has never been a violent incident there! This fact reinforces the theory that the GUTS culture greatly helps to decrease violence in the world. The only accidents there were minor machines malfunctioning and none of them represented danger to the customers. Goryland is the safest theme park in the world and its safety measures are being studied by the greatest professionals in the area.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHJ2oHvTxps
Overall, Goryland is one of the biggest and most loved thematic parks in the world, being one of the top 10 places to visit according to most touristic guides. Family friendly and perfectly safe, it’s the perfect place to spend some time on vacation or to visit in the weekends, being a mandatory visit for the most fanatical GUTS fans.

GUTS AND ESPORTS

GUTS has already made his own path through esports, featuring championships at some huge events like EVO. As a brazilian development company we've presented GUTS to fighting game events such as Treta Championship and Fight in Rio, both part of the capcom pro tour calendar.

Besides the fighting game community events, GUTS has made championships among development, technology and general game events such as: Campus party, BIG and Brasil Game Show.

In all of our competitions, we’ve always made sure to include awesome prizes: a GUTS custom arcade stick, a Playstation 4, a huge amount of Steam credits and, of course, the greatest of them all… GUTS Keys!

The game reception is always calorous and it evokes the competitive spirit of every contestant that had the chance of playing GUTS. Still, even while being competitive, the whole thing is guided by the fun and gory style!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzhYduRm3AQ

Was GUTS supposed to be a competitive game in the fighting games scenario from the very start?
Yes. When we decided we would make a fighting game, we started researching a lot about the market and the fighting game titles. We found out it’s a very complex genre - with a strong fan base of extremely passionate people - and consequently, very exigent in terms of frame data and general balancing. On the other hand, it’s a genre that’s becoming very non-friendly for beginners, scaring them off instead of welcoming them - who never heard someone saying “No, thanks, I don’t like playing fighting games”? We then decided that the GUTS mission is to be simultaneously fun for those who just want to play and have fun in a button masher style, but deep and complex enough for those who want to dedicate to the competitive side of the game, training and becoming a GUTS expert.

How did the GUTS championships idea came up?
When the very first GUTS character was playable, we already felt in the internet testing that the game had a huge competitive potential. It has a very particular strategic layer, and that is fascinating, allowing unique matches to be held, demanding different skills than the usual ones in fighting games. We’ve held a few intern championships here in Flux over a year ago! Having championships for the public was a natural evolution that followed the progress of the game development.
