Hearthstone Updates

Rewind Performance Optimizations

Rewind is now faster and smoother than ever! When you play a card with the Rewind keyword, you can turn back the clock and replay a card. This feature was initially a bit slow at launch, but we’ve significantly sped it up. Now you can dedicate your time where it matters most: beating your opponent!

Arena Updates

All Fabled cards (except Rafaam) from Across the Timeways are now in the Arena card pool as Legendary Buckets. Drafting a Fabled card will add it to your deck with its associated cards. You are able to redraft the associated cards, should you choose to do so.

Battlegrounds Updates

Harness the sands of time in Battlegrounds Season 12: Tavern at the Edge of Time! Explore the Timewarped Tavern, master new alternate timeline cards, and make every moment count. The new season begins on December 2.

When Season 12 starts, Anomalies and Buddies will be removed from the Tavern.

New System: Timewarped Tavern

With Murozond locked in a time-bending battle against the Bronze Dragonflight, the Tavern is feeling the effects of this chronal conflict. To help in the fight to save time, Nozdormu is opening a special Timewarped Tavern to arm players with cards infused with temporal magic. This unique shop features alternate timeline versions of familiar cards, and you may even encounter a few from timelines that have never been seen before.

The Timewarped Tavern appears twice per game, offering a fresh selection of five special cards each time. A Minor Timewarp occurs on Turn 6, and a Major Timewarp occurs on Turn 9. The cards in this shop are ones you don't normally find in the tavern:

  • Unique minions
  • Unique spells
  • Alternate versions of existing cards
  • Second hero powers (Minor Timewarp only)

When you enter the Timewarped Tavern, you receive two Chronum, a new currency used to buy cards instead of Gold. Cards in the shop cost one or two Chronum, and any unspent Chronum disappear at the end of the turn, so spend wisely!

The Timewarped Tavern operates under its own set of rules:

  • You cannot Freeze or Refresh the Timewarped Tavern.
  • Your hand, board, and hero power do not function here.
  • If buying cards causes you to exceed your hand limit, your hand limit will be temporarily increased to accommodate those cards.
  • Timewarped cards cannot Triple with their regular versions. (e.g., Timewarped Busker can only Triple with two more Timewarped Buskers, not with Southsea Busker.)

Keep an eye out for Nozdormu, the big bronze dragon running the show, and help save the timelines!

34.0.2 Patch Notes

Patch 34.0.2 launches today with balance updates for Hearthstone, Wild, and Battlegrounds.

Hearthstone Updates

Dev Comment: Well met! We’ve been loving the fresh decks and creative strategies you’ve been brewing with the new cards from Across the Timeways, like Lo-Gosh Warrior and Aura Paladin. Our goal with this balance update is to keep that spirit of experimentation alive by toning down a variety of cards that have long dominated the meta.

Strong decks from the last expansion and influential cards like Fyrakk have shaped the playing field in big ways. By adjusting these, we are opening the door for new ideas and strategies to succeed across all levels of play.

We can’t wait to see what you come up with next.

The power level of these cards has been lowered:

Fyrakk the Blazing

  • Old: [9 mana] Battlecry: Cast 20 Mana worth of Fire spells at random enemies.
  • New: [10 mana] Battlecry: Cast 15 Mana worth of Fire spells at random enemies.
  • Dev Comment: Fyrakk has served as a go-to Neutral finisher for a while, so we’re cooling him off a bit to encourage exploration of more class-specific win conditions.

Ancient of Yore

  • Old: Dormant for 2 turns. While Dormant, gain 5 Armor and draw a card at the end of your turn.
  • New: Dormant for 2 turns. While Dormant, gain 3 Armor and draw a card at the end of your turn.

Arkonite Defense Crystal

  • Old: Taunt
  • New: No longer has Taunt

Escape the Underfel

  • Old: Play 5 Temporary cards. Quest reward Underfel Rift costs 3 mana.
  • New: Play 6 Temporary cards. Quest reward Underfel Rift costs 5 mana.

Dive the Golakka Depths

  • Old: Play 5 Murlocs.
  • New: Play 6 Murlocs.
  • Dev Comment: This Quest has been especially prevalent in lower rank brackets, so we’re scaling it back to shake things up.

Sparkling Phial

  • Old: [3 mana]
  • New: [4 mana]

Corpsicle

  • Old: [2 mana]
  • New: [3 mana]

Sanguine Infestation

  • Old: [4 mana]
  • New: [5 mana]

Sandbox Scoundrel

  • Old: Your next card this turn costs (3) less.
  • New: Your next card this turn costs (2) less.

Resuscitate

  • Old: [5 mana]
  • New: [6 mana]

Testing Dummy

  • Old: Deathrattle: Deal 8 damage randomly split among all enemies.
  • New: Deathrattle: Deal 8 damage split among enemy minions.

Chemical Spill

  • Old: [5 mana]
  • New: [6 mana]

Ultralisk Cavern

  • Old: [3 mana]
  • New: [4 mana]

Metal Detector

  • Old: After your hero attacks and kills a minion, get a Coin.
  • New: Deathrattle: Get a Coin.

R.C. Rampage

  • Old: [4 mana]
  • New: [5 mana]

Battlefiend

  • Old: 1/3.
  • New: 1/2.

Wild Updates

Dev Comment: We’re making a few targeted adjustments to outliers in Wild. Holy Wrath has been part of Hearthstone since the very beginning, but its current level of consistency and burst damage goes beyond what we want for the format. As for Discard Warlock, it’s a core strategy for the class and will continue to receive support, but we’ll be keeping a close eye on it to ensure the cumulative impact of its cards doesn’t push things too far.

The power level of these cards has been lowered:

Holy Wrath

  • Old: [5 mana] Draw a card and deal damage equal to its cost.
  • New: [3 mana] Draw a card and deal damage equal to its cost to a minion.

Malchezaar's Imp

  • Old: [1 mana]
  • New: [2 mana]

Battlegrounds Updates

Dev Comment: This patch will likely be our final major balance update for the season. With the new season expected to shake up the meta in a big way, we’ve kept these changes focused on three key types: Demons, Murlocs, and Undead.

  • Demons: We’re removing Cultist S’thara and reducing Lord of Ruins to +2/+1. This should lower the ceiling of the damage archetype without removing it entirely. We considered nerfing or removing Hawkstrider Herald instead, but decided against it since that card supports other strategies like Beasts. This also has the side benefit of removing Transmuted Bramblewitch, which should cut down on overall “scam” potential.
  • Murlocs: We’ve adjusted Young Murk-Eye and Azerite Empowerment to reduce the power ceiling of the Magicfin Mycologist strategy. We discussed removing Magicfin itself, but kept it in because it creates interesting decisions and strategies. We’ll be monitoring these changes closely.
  • Undead: This type has been struggling across the board, so we’ve applied broad buffs to several cards to help it compete. Other minion changes (such as Coldlight Diver, Lost City Looter, All-Seeing Elder, and Fire-Forged Evoker) are targeted at individual outliers rather than entire archetypes.

We also made minor adjustments to various heroes and buddies to keep them more in line. We kept these light since hero power will shift significantly once Buddies rotate out, and we’ll revisit hero balance next season.

We hope you’ve enjoyed this season of Battlegrounds. Big changes are coming to the Tavern soon, and we can’t wait to share more with you. Until then, happy battling, and we’ll see you next time!

Hearthstone Updates

Dev Comment: Well met! It’s been great to see all the ways you're playing the new cards from Across the Timeways ahead of the November 4 launch. Based on your feedback, we’ve made some updates in this patch to help the Rewind effect feel a little snappier. Mister Clocksworth has been a standout in this regard, so we’re removing one of his Rewinds to improve the overall experience of playing with or against him. While this slightly tones him down, we think the change will make games more enjoyable for everyone. We’re also continuing to explore further improvements to Rewind for a future update. Thanks for your input and we hope you have a good time with the new set!

Mister Clocksworth

  • Old: Rewind x3.
  • New: Rewind x2.

Arfus Bounds Into Darkmoon Faire Treasures

The dog days are back... from the dead! Arfus has arrived in Hearthstone as a new interactive Pet, and he’s just dying to play with you. This ghostly good boy will be your loyal companion during matches, reacting to your gameplay with baleful barks and ghoulish growls. Throw him a bone to snack on or play fetch with Frostmourne (just don’t tell Arthas).

Level up Arfus to unlock three extra skins: Hound of Menethil, Putrid Pupper, and Helmed Hound. Pets earn XP when they see you do things they like, with each action granting 5 XP. Here’s what gets Arfus’ tail wagging:

  • Feed Arfus a bone treat
  • Play fetch with Arfus using Frostmourne
  • Spend a corpse
  • Play a Lich King card
  • Play a frost spell
  • Play a minion with two types
  • Play an undead minion with 5+ Attack
  • A friendly minion dies during your turn or shop phase
  • Fill up your entire hand with cards
  • Summon a Deathrattle minion

33.6.2 Patch Notes

Patch 33.6.2 launches today with a variety of updates for Battlegrounds, including the return of Anomalies and balance changes to Heroes, Buddies, and more.

Battlegrounds Updates

Dev Comment: Well met!

We’re overall quite pleased with the initial reception to the midseason shakeup. This patch’s minion adjustments primarily focus on nerfing Quilboar while buffing Beasts, Undead, and Elementals. We also made several changes to various Buddies and Heroes based on early performance data to bring them more in line with each other.

This patch also brings Anomalies back to the game! There are six brand-new Anomalies that interact with the Buddy system in different ways. In addition to these, we’ve curated 20 returning Anomalies to rejoin the pool. One Anomaly not returning this time is Secrets of Norgannon (also known as “The Tier 7 Anomaly”). We’ve chosen to hold it back until we’ve had a chance to adjust the Tier 7 minion pool.

This patch introduces a significant rule change to Anomaly appearance rates: after you play with an Anomaly, it won’t appear again for at least three games. This should help you experience a wider variety of Anomalies and keep each game feeling fresh.

We don’t expect to make further gameplay adjustments until sometime after Across the Timeways launches, but we’ll be keeping an eye on the meta in the meantime. We hope you enjoy these updates and we’ll see you in the Tavern!

Anomalies Return

Anomalies are back in Battlegrounds! Anomalies are tavern-transforming effects that apply to all players from the start of each game.

New Anomalies

  • Summoning Pact: After you upgrade the Tavern, reduce the cost of your next Buddy by (2).
  • Spirit of Friendship: After you press your Buddy Button, also Discover a Buddy.
  • Third Nature: You can press your Buddy Button a 3rd time for a Golden Buddy. It costs half.
  • Colorful Camaraderie: Buddies have all minion types.
  • Partner in Crime: You have no Buddy Button. On turn 4, choose a Quest to get your Golden Buddy.
  • Amicable Amendment: The Cost of your Buddy Button is 50% higher, but reduces by (1) after you buy a card.

Returning Anomalies

  • A Faire Reward: Instead of a minion, Triple Rewards Discover a Tier 1 Darkmoon Prize. (Improves in 4 turns!)
  • Audience's Choice: At the start of each turn, one player chooses a card for ALL players to get at end of turn.
  • Bring Home the Bacon: Start with two upgrading 'Piggy Banks'. Break them open to gain Gold!
  • Bring in the Buddies: Buddies are in the Tavern.
  • Continuing Education: At the start of each turn, get an Evolving Scroll. Each turn, it transforms into a Tavern spell from a Tier higher.
  • Double Header: The first time you buy a card each turn, get an extra copy of it.
  • Eleventh Hour: The first time your hero takes fatal damage in combat, prevent it and gain 11 Gold next turn instead.
  • Golden Arrow: Every 3 turns, get a Golden Arrow. (3 turns left!)
  • Golganneth's Tempest: Minions cost 2 Gold. You cannot Refresh the Tavern. It Refreshes itself after you buy a card.

Battlegrounds Updates

Dev Comment: This midseason update is a huge one! With so much packed into this patch, we wanted to take a moment to walk through the changes and share some insight into our design goals.

First, Hero changes! This patch includes over 25 updates to existing Heroes. Our goal is to make more Heroes feel engaging to play, so Hero selection becomes a more interesting decision. These changes were guided primarily by player feedback. Thank you to everyone who shared thoughts on which Heroes could use a boost.

Next, the return of Buddies! One common critique of Buddies was that many designs felt stale after being unchanged for so long. In addition to introducing 10 brand-new Buddies, we’ve redesigned or adjusted nearly 40 existing ones. Combined with the Hero changes, these updates should open up fresh strategies and give players new reasons to revisit old favorites.

Finally, anomalies are coming back soon! We’ve made a few adjustments based on what we learned last season when they appeared alongside Trinkets. To start, they’ll come back shortly after launch to give players time to get familiar with the new Heroes and Buddies. The pool of returning Anomalies has been refreshed to include more fan favorites, adding a bit more chaos to the mode. We’re also introducing six new Anomalies that directly affect how the Buddy system works.

We'll be keeping a close eye on how all of these changes play out and will make additional adjustments as needed. We hope you all enjoy the new update and we'll see you in the Tavern!

Buddies Return

Buddies are back in Battlegrounds! Buddies are powerful minions that come paired with each Hero. Anomalies are also set to make their return in an upcoming update, so stay tuned for more details on that. As of Patch 33.6, Quests are leaving the Tavern.

33.4.2 Patch Notes

Patch 33.4.2 launches today with updates for Hearthstone and Battlegrounds, as well as a few bug fixes.

Hearthstone Updates

Dev Comment: We’d like to share an update on the current state of Hearthstone and what to expect from this patch.

The data shows a relatively balanced meta, with no dominant power outliers or play patterns demanding nerfs. At the same time, the Day of Rebirth Mini-Set didn’t land as we hoped. This patch focuses on targeted buffs to help a few of those cards better realize their potential. Some of these changes support Quest decks, while also opening up new options across other archetypes (more details below).

We understand that many of you were hoping for bigger changes. We've seen a lot of feedback about the strong neutral package of Fyrakk, Elise, Naralex, and Ysera, and we'll be keeping a close eye on them moving forward. We've also continued to hear suggestions to buff nearly every new Quest so they become competitive archetypes. However, as we've shared before, too many competitive Quests in the long term can lead to a metagame that isn't fun or healthy.

More broadly, we believe future expansions are a better place to bring community feedback to life than trying to overhaul the current set through balance patches. We fell short of our goal of introducing enough new competitive options this expansion. As we look ahead to the next expansion and beyond, we're keeping your response to this set in mind and are using it to help shape the future of Hearthstone.

Card Changes

Khelos (From Egg of Khelos)

  • New: Khelos now has Taunt.
  • Dev Comment: We’ve seen a lot of experimentation with Khelos, often in combination with Dissolving Ooze. We want to preserve that synergy while also giving Khelos a stronger standalone presence by adding Taunt.

Mirrex, the Crystalline

  • Old: While in your hand, this is a 3/3 copy of the last minion your opponent played.
  • New: While in your hand, this is a 3/4 copy of the last minion your opponent played.

Posessed Animancer

  • Old: [6 mana]
  • New: [5 mana]
  • Dev Comment: We’ve seen players tapping into the potential of Possessed Animancer, and we’re making it more efficient to use. Alongside that, we’re also improving one of its favorite partners, Asphyxiodon. We wouldn't be giga sore if you tried using it with another Beast, either.

Asphyxiodon

  • Old: 6/10
  • New: 6/12

Ritual of Life

  • Old: Discover a 3-Cost minion. Summon a 2/2 copy of it.
  • New: Discover a 3-Cost minion. Summon a 2/3 copy of it.

Ankylodon

  • Old: [8 mana] 7/7
  • New: [6 mana] 7/5
  • Dev Comment: Upgrading Ankylodon gives Hunter a powerful Discover option through effects like Detailed Notes, while also making it a solid Beast for Quest Hunter and other Hunter decks.

Longneck Egg

  • Old: Deathrattle: Summon a 1/2 Beast. Give your minions +1/+1.
  • New: Deathrattle: Summon a 3/3 Beast. Give your minions +1/+1.

Costume Merchant

  • Old: 1/3
  • New: 2/4

Tortotem

  • Old: [2 mana] 0/4
  • New: [1 mana] 0/3
  • Dev Comment: We’ve found that players already complete the Shaman Quest fairly quickly, but we still wanted to give Tortotem a small boost. Lowering its cost helps it contribute to Quest completion while also enabling earlier minion generation to fuel the payoff once the Quest is complete.

Battlegrounds Updates

Dev Comment: We’re heading into the midseason update with one last round of balance changes, and we’re feeling good about how things are shaping up. Since its introduction at the start of Season 11, Rally has performed well and earned its place as an evergreen keyword. That said, future updates will likely dial back its overall prevalence in the game. We’ve also received great feedback on Quests as a system and are actively discussing potential adjustments if and when they return.

This update focuses on refining the meta to keep gameplay engaging and fun. Quilboar and Elementals have been scaled back to better align with the rest of the field, while Undead, Beasts, Dragons, Mechs, and Murlocs have received a boost to help them stand out more competitively.

We also fine-tuned Quest difficulty to make the experience more consistent and reduce the impact of “high roll” and “low roll” outcomes. To support that goal, Unlikely Duo now triggers on “buy” instead of “play,” and Cry for Help has been removed from the Quest pool. These changes, along with other targeted adjustments to individual Quests and Rewards, are intended to reduce variance and discourage holding cards going into Turn 4. Holding cards could give some players too much acceleration on the Quest turn, so this update should help ensure Quest difficulty feels consistently fair across the lobby.

We’ll continue monitoring the meta and making updates as needed. There are exciting things on the horizon for the midseason update, and we’re looking forward to sharing more soon. See you in the Tavern!

33.2.2 Patch Notes

Hearthstone balance changes, Battlegrounds updates, and some bug fixes go live today!

Hearthstone Updates

Dev Comment: Well met! We want to share a quick update covering two things: a small set of balance changes and the current status of Quests. The meta features a wide variety of decks across classes and strategies, balanced well against each other, so we’ve avoided major changes that could disrupt things ahead of the mini-set launch. Instead, we focused on a couple of play patterns that needed adjustment.

Amirdrassil has been the strongest card in Druid since its release, especially in Owlonius Druid where it fuels the OTK gameplan. This change slows it down and makes it riskier to keep in the mulligan.

Reserve Spot has been enabling explosive early turns in Handbuff Hunter, so we’ve made it a bit slower and more measured to reduce those blowouts.

We’ve been following community discussions around the power level of Quests and appreciate everyone who’s taken the time to share their thoughts. Our goal this expansion was to bring Quests closer to the level they reached in their first two appearances, rather than the overperformance seen with Questlines in United in Stormwind. For that reason, we’re not making further Quest buffs in this patch, but we’ll continue monitoring their power level following the mini-set.

Amirdrassil

  • Old: 4 mana.
  • New: 5 mana.

Reserved Spot

  • Old: 3 mana.
  • New: 4 mana.

The above disenchantable cards will be eligible for full dust refunds for two weeks following Patch 33.2.2.

Battlegrounds Updates

Dev Comment: This patch primarily targets the overperformance of cycling Elementals, Flotsam Flinger Murlocs, and spell-buffing Undead, while also rebalancing Stomping Stegodon Beasts. We're also buffing underperformers such as Goldrinn Beasts, Demons, and Quilboar that synergize with Blood Gems played from hand.

The adjustment to Stomping Stegodon (granting +2 Attack but no Health) is intended to reduce the comp’s snowballing potential when minions survive too long in combat, which can lead to frustrating play patterns (especially in Duos). To compensate for the now more fragile Stegodon builds, we’re bringing back P-0UL-TR0N to give the strategy more late-game potential.

We will continue to monitor the meta as it develops and make additional adjustments as needed. Thank you for all you feedback so far on the new season and we’ll see you in the Tavern!

Patch 33.0.3 is rolling out with updates for Hearthstone, Battlegrounds, and more!

Hearthstone Updates

Dev Comment: With the launch of The Lost City of Un’Goro last week, our primary goals for this patch are to infuse power into several of the new cards and to tone down some older decks and early outliers. We’re doing buffs earlier in this expansion cycle because we can see from the early data that many of the new cards are not meeting expectations—and that nerfs alone won’t result in the changes we want to see.

New: [3 mana] 3/2. Give your other Murlocs "Deathrattle: Draw a card."

Menagerie Jug

Old: Battlecry: Give 3 random friendly minions of different minion types +3/+3.
New: Battlecry: Give 3 random friendly minions of different minion types +2/+2.

The power level of these cards has been raised:

Battlegrounds Updates

Dev Comment: Well met! Patch 33.0.3 marks our final major balance update of the season. While we’ve made targeted adjustments to individual Trinkets and Anomalies, the core focus this patch is on minion tuning. We’ve addressed standout cards like Shoalfin Mystic and Captain Sanders, aiming to bring them into healthier positions within the meta. At the same time, we’ve given a boost to underperformers such as Fauna Whisperer and Champion of Sargeras to make them more rewarding to play. We hope you’ve enjoyed this season and look forward to sharing what’s coming next very soon.
