Hex Gambit Guide #3: 11 Things to Know Before Jumping Into Hex Gambit PvP

Hex Gambit: Respawned offers players quirky and competitive turn-based tactics in both solo and competitive modes. Perhaps you’re the type that would rather skip the campaign and jump head first into online battles? Well, luckily for you, Captains and maps will unlock just as quickly playing online as they do in single player! Before you bounce into battle, here’s a few pointers to get you up to speed.

Nothing Is Out Of Reach

Hex Gambit features a movement mechanic called crowdsurfing, allowing minions to hop over each other as they cross the board. That means ‘safety’ is hard to come by, and crowds of minions become shortcuts. If there’s a space you need to reach, there’s probably a way to get there in a single turn. Whether it’s worth the cost
 that’s up to you.

You Can Undo!

Each player can use three undos per turn. So if something doesn’t work out like you expected, hit X on your controller (Left Shift on PC) and try it again!

Respect the Pillar Tap

Remember that Hex Gambit is a battle SPORT. Dealing damage doesn’t win battles, Victory Points do, and there are two ways to earn them. Defeating an enemy will net you 1 VP, but you’ll gain them more efficiently by getting any minion next to an enemy pillar and using the last move in their arsenal: Pillar Tap.

It costs one Action Point to Pillar Tap and gain a VP. Clearing an enemy, on the other hand, will cost you two Action Points or more.

Tappin’ Tactics

Parking your minion next to an enemy pillar creates a problem your opponent can’t ignore. The best pillar pushes will come from healthier or Inspired units, which will take a few turns for your opponent to remove. Don’t send a unit that will be wiped out for 1 AP, unless they’re meant as a crafty distraction. And take care that YOU don’t ignore a minion parked at your own pillar for too long. Every turn they linger adds up

Check Your Enemies

Some attacks can be used every turn, and some have cooldowns. The ones with cooldowns are the most dangerous, but they have to charge before they can be used.

Select an enemy unit to see which of its moves are cooling down. Check their action icons for the lightning bolt ‘charging’ symbol and a number - that number ticks over at the end of their turns, so if it says 1 you’re safe for now.

Take Those Toggle Spaces

Some maps have gray Toggle Spaces, which either team can control by simply stepping over them. These grant a variety of useful bonuses, from team heals to free laser attacks. Aside from the pillar-moving variety, these bonuses only trigger if you control the toggler at the start of your turn.

Remember, you don’t need to stay standing on togglers to maintain control! You can walk across them, Dash across them, even Swat minions across them. Just don’t leave them in enemy hands for too long, because their advantages add up over time.

Action Economics

Many of the moves in Hex Gambit can be ‘used’ or ‘used well’. For example: the Soldier’s Stab hits outward across two spaces, so it can be used to strike one target at a distance, or hit two targets lined up. Look for opportunities to maximize the damage for each AP you spend, and try to deny your opponent those opportunities.

Don’t Forget Your Freebies

There are a handful of moves in Hex Gambit that you can use for ZERO Action Points, and they’re easy to forget. The Runner’s Scratch is a free move that deals 1 HP damage, which is occasionally enough to finish an enemy off. The Defender’s freebie is Blockade, which creates an indestructible barrier to block things like crowdsurfs and Soldier’s Stabs. Last is the Pacifist’s Pacify, which prevents a target from taking any actions for a turn.

Swat Yourself

A lot of new players think it’s weird that they can target their own minions with the Brute’s Swat, the Defender’s Back Off, and the Punk’s Roll - but don’t neglect this invaluable maneuvering tool. These moves deal NO friendly fire damage, and can be used to nudge your minions to spaces they couldn’t reach before.

Don’t Be Intimidated

If the opposing team has a Motivator, you’re going to have to contend with the Intimidated status. Intimidated minions have a red halo, and take double damage the next time they’re hit. The Intimidate attack affects all minions surrounding a Motivator, so try not to form clusters of units in a circle, or a Motivator will hop in the middle and tag them all.

If you have your own Motivator, you can override Intimidate with Inspire. It can also be cleared by some of the Captains’ Gambits.

Punk + Motivator = BOOM

Speaking of Intimidation, Bjorgolf and Lolli’s minion loadouts have the perfect followup attack for that ‘double damage’ status. The Punk’s Split Strike is a move that deals damage equal to half a unit’s health (rounded up). And if you double half their health
why, that’s all their health, innit?

Keep these tips and tricks in mind for a vital edge that will raise you above the competition, and make you a PvP champion!

Hex Gambit Guide #1: Meet the Hex Gambit Captains!

Hex Gambit: Respawned presents players with a choice of ten different Captains, each with their own unique minion loadout and limited-use Captain’s Gambit super power. While mastering the strengths and secrets of your minion classes is crucial, learning to leverage your Captain’s Gambit can make or break your PvP performance.

You will begin with five available Captains, and unlock the rest through playing and earning coins.

Read on to be introduced to your Captains, and pick up some tips for each to give you an edge.

Abbacus

Unlocked | Gambit: Hard Reset x 2

Hard Reset restores any minion to its ‘just spawned’ state. This Gambit’s most straightforward use is to heal your minions - but you might also consider using it on an enemy! This might sound counterproductive, but returning a minion to its ‘spawning state’ also resets the cooldown timer for their strongest moves. You can check enemy minions to see when their best attacks are ready, then zap them and reset the clock! Against powerful attacks like the Brute’s Wrecker or the Sniper’s Airstrike, this can save you some serious pain.

This gambit will also remove the Intimidation or Pacify status when used on your minions, which might otherwise doom an important unit.

Penny Miser

Unlocked | Gambit: Take a Penny x 2

Take a Penny deals 1 HP damage to all enemies! In addition to the obvious, it’s a free way to knock off any pesky Inspiration the enemy team may have built up. It will also deal double damage against Intimidated enemies - though keep in mind that Captain Penny won’t have a Motivator on her team in competitive PvP.

Bjorgolf

Unlocked | Gambit: Cold Make Stop x 3

Cold Make Stop will freeze an enemy in place for one round - and they’ll still be vulnerable to attacks while frozen! This Gambit is the weakest of the bunch, so you’ll be permitted the most uses of any special in the game.

Like with Abbacus, freezing a unit just as its deadliest move has cooled down is a smart approach. You can also block reinforcements by freezing enemies on their own spawn space, or squeeze in one extra Pillar Tap by freezing an important defender.

Salvador

Unlocked | Gambit: Protect x 2

Protect grants a minion invincibility for one round! Whether you’re tapping or defending, there are plenty of moments when this will come in handy. It also gives Salvador’s Pacifists two turns to heal your protected unit, and pairs well with Pacify.

Hexpert

Unlocked | Gambit: Glitch x 2

Glitch adds 3 HP to any minion, and can even boost their health above its maximum. This one is pretty straightforward. Instead of burning it immediately, though, you might want to hold onto this Gambit for a pivotal moment, to keep a crucial minion on the board for one more turn.

Molera

Locked | Gambit: Immolation x 1

Immolation burns your own minion to gain two Victory Points. While that seems counter-productive, you’re actually denying a Victory Point to your enemies and claiming it for yourself!

For the most strategic use, you’ll want to choose a minion that is about to die, and squeeze any last bit of usefulness out of them before their blazing demise. Maybe send them on a little suicide mission, then burn ’em up! They’re robots. It’s fine.

It’s extra cruel to trigger this late in the match, catching a comfortable opponent off guard with that final, fiery mic drop.

Grim Drake

Locked | Gambit: No Mercy x 1

No Mercy charges all of your cooldowns and allows moved units to move again. This Gambit is very dangerous when used well! All of the game’s strongest attacks have cooldowns, but with this special you can use them twice in one turn! If you save some AP ahead of time, you can bring to life every player’s worst nightmare: the dreaded double-Wrecker from a single Brute! This is also the only way a minion can tap a pillar twice in one turn.

Dr. Superior

Locked | Gambit: Alter Fate Itself x 1

Alter Fate Itself conjures 3 AP from the celestial void of cheating, almost giving you a double turn! The Brute’s Wrecker is the most expensive attack in the game, and this Gambit definitely takes the edge off. It’s also great for bringing in a ton of reinforcements, or for a massive push with minions you’ve already spawned.

Violet

Locked | Gambit: Smackdown x 1

Smackdown crushes an opposing minion down to 1 HP (also removing any damage modifiers). Keep an eye out for someone beefy and dangerous to get as much bang for your buck as possible. This Gambit is especially effective against teams with Motivators, since it cuts right through their damage-blocking Inspiration. Make sure to always have a Runner ready to finish your target off with a free Scratch.

Lolli

Locked | Gambit: No Backsies x 1

No Backsies will swap one of your minions for one of your opponent’s. Think carefully about your trade, because you only get one!

A popular strategy is to swap a dying unit for a healthy one, then kill the dying unit immediately for a Victory Point. You might also consider stealing a Brute whose Wrecker has just cooled down, or replacing a minion afflicted with Intimidate or Pacify.

Another good option is trading a tapping character that’s almost done for. Swap in something healthy, and they’re already in position to rack up more Victory Points!

Now you’ve met each of your potential Captains, you’re well-placed to choose who will lead your minions into rapid-fire hex warfare! Every Gambit has its uses, and if ultra-crafty powers like Violet’s punishing Smackdown or Lolli’s devious No Backsies have your caught your eye, you’d best get started earning some coins - ice up your foes with Bjorgolf’s Cold Make Stop or bolster your minions with Hexpert’s Glitch, and you’ll have all the Captains unlocked in no time!

Hex Gambit Guide #1: Making the Most of Your Minions In Hex Gambit: Respawned

Whether you’re competing online or trying to outsmart the campaign’s AI, Hex Gambit’s diverse cast of minions bring plenty of tricks to get the job done. Here’s a few tips to make the most of their awfully short lives.

Soldier

These are your most flexible fighters. If you Stab from a distance, most units have to spend two Action Points to move beside you and retaliate. If the opportunity presents itself, you can get more bang for your buck by stabbing through two minions at once.

Multislash is NOT just for dealing three damage instead of two. Consider your targets. This attack can knock off Inspiration with a single strike, pick off a weak enemy while hitting someone new, or set up several characters’ HPs for another attack.

Runner

Runners can reach just about anything, and they’ll just barely survive the game’s numerous 2 HP damage attacks. You do have to watch out for a few one-hit kills, though. Attacks like the Soldier's Multislash, the Sniper's Airstrike and the splash damage from the Brute's Wrecker will all wipe your Runners out instantly - but each of those attacks also has a cooldown period in which your Runner is safe.

Don’t forget her free Scratch! This 1 HP damage attack can add up and save you some Action Points down the road.

Defender

Back Off deals no friendly fire damage, so you can use it to nudge your friends into range. When using it against an enemy, consider their destination. You might push them into position for another attack or cover their spawn space, forcing them to move if they want reinforcements.

Blockade costs NOTHING, and it can save lives. It’s great for blocking a crowdsurfing path, denying enemy spawns, and holding toggle spaces (though it won’t capture them).

Motivator

Backing up a pillar tapping push with your Motivator’s Inspire can net you more Victory Points, or at least cost your opponent more Action Points to dismantle. It’s also not a bad idea to park a Motivator next to your spawn space. They can Inspire new troops while providing a little crowdsurf boost.

Be on the lookout for enemies in a circle around a single, open space. Jump in the middle and Intimidate them all! Intimidated foes take double damage, and the status is tricky to remove without taking the hit. If you have a Punk in your loadout, be sure to check out his section below for a must-know follow-up attack.

Sniper

The Sniper is vulnerable to the same one-hit kills as the Runner, and is the game’s slowest character. You’ll want to find tiles with good line of sight (in the form of straight hex paths), and be cautious of crowdsurfing paths that can reach you. The Motivator’s Inspire and Defender’s Blockade can extend a Sniper’s lifespan.

Airstrike has a long cooldown and can’t hit any enemies directly beside the Sniper. That said, this is a one-hit kill for Runners and other Snipers that’s very hard to hide from. It also deals a brutal 6 HP damage to Intimidated characters.

Pacifist

What good is a character that doesn’t fight? Park a Pacifist next to an enemy pillar and find out! Pacifists and Brutes have the game’s highest HP values.

Her healing Sprinkle affects all surrounding units, so you’ll want to pre-position the Pacifist beside your attackers, or keep them within reach. The goal is to heal as many characters as possible with each use, preferably without having to move a lot.

Watch enemy cooldowns for a good opportunity to Pacify, which is a free ability. Pacified targets can only move, so you can use it to stall powerful attacks like the Brute’s Wrecker or to neutralize a pesky pillar tapper for one round.

Punk

The Punk’s Roll is another move that won’t damage your allies, but can chain through a line of enemies the same way crowdsurfing does. You can position your friends to bridge enemies together, creating longer rolling paths for more damage. If an enemy is standing on a toggle space and you defeat them with a Roll, you’ll take control of the space! And if you’re looking to avoid getting Rolled over yourself, remember that Punks can’t use it without an open spot to land.

Split Strike halves a target’s health, so you don’t want to spend it on targets with 4 HP or less unless you have a good reason. It’s a crucial attack for the Campaign’s crowned minion battles, since the crowned version of each minion has 2-3x their normal HP.

This move combos particularly well with the Motivator’s Intimidate, which doubles incoming attack damage. Split Striking ANY Intimidated unit is a one-hit kill.

Brute

They’re scary looking, but they need a few turns to charge their super-punishing Wrecker attack. Using the Wrecker, you may want to focus on clearing the most enemies or Inspirations from the board, rather than dealing the most damage possible. You might also hold over an Action Point for your Wrecking turn, since it’s the game’s only 2 AP move.

Defending against the Wrecker, pay attention to the Brutes' cooldowns! If a Wrecker is ready, spread out as much as possible to minimize the splash damage.

On the majority of turns when Wrecker isn’t ready, Swat is a subtle but useful tool in your arsenal. It’s another ‘no friendly fire’ move that can launch allies across the map for surprise attacks. It’s also great for sending enemies home, or clearing out a foe that’s clinging to 1 HP.

Master the unique skillsets of each of your minions, to menace your competitors and dominate the boards!
