END OF THE YEAR GAME DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

Heya, as a big end of the year gift, I want to give an update on how I Hate You, Please Suffer - Complete - is going!

The first two of the last batch of quests (as well as the alternative version of the first) are basically done! The first quest has you restoring a lighthouse, which Devon has a vested emotional interest in. The second quest involves bringing in other NPCs for a whole big adventure investigating some weird petty crime, and Kyrie sure does hate crime.

A big thing with the second quest is that it introduces NPC helpers that has the chance to pitch in moves at the end of every turn. Plus, losing while they're in the party allows you to keep going - and in fact, boss fights will have different outcomes if you lose. The main challenge I had with this part of the game is balancing things so that NPCs have their presence felt and are helpful, but not too helpful to carry fights.

Why the NPCs? Well, a major idea I want to express in this game is that the main party isn't the heroes. They're heroic, (mostly), but they aren't the main characters of life. Other people are also on that adventuring hustle, and Ramona's ultimately just trying to establish a new normal for herself. In fact, to emphasize this, some tasks in the game are locked off at certain points, because well, some other adventurer did it already. It's not all about her.

But what if you do want her to be the main character of life? Well, that's what that alternative route is for. As opposed to the open world of trying to make money and pursue whatever JRPG tasks suits your fancy, the alternative route takes that last batch of quests and puts them on a linear route with a bunch of divergences from the normal game, railroading you toward a different kind of experience.

The last big area in the game available has also opened up! Going north from the harbor takes you to the beach, where you'll find a new assortment of things to do, including this completely normal building and the aforementioned lighthouse. While there's still a bunch of things I want to change or add, the last big maps that's going to be made for the game are the quest-only dungeons and the final floors of the Tower, where maybe Ramona can find some kinda closure for herself besides paying her rent and buying her way out of her lease.

In a major mechanics change, exhaustion is now a thing. Every battle/death makes your characters sleepy. It will eventually reach the point where they start developing Exhausted at the start of every battle. The only way to avert this is to get your ass in bed. Be responsible about sleep though! Sleeping too soon since the last time you slept in will make characters Sluggish, and while it's not as bad of a debuff as Exhausted, you probably wouldn't want that.

(I thought about doing a thing for hunger too but it's really annoying how using an item in the menu that has an event connected to it kicks you out of the menu entirely, so screw that.)

In another change, Uzbek's bar has also been updated! He'll now convert the stat raising pills you find into drinks that will remove the health draining problem downing random drugs will have. I figured that the bar is really unused, so I figured that I change it to something that will be more generally useful.

You may wonder, "when will I finish this game?" Well, I wonder that, too. Besides the game really expanding past my initial scope, I have a lot of real life things to deal with, along with my obligations to Indie Hell Zone. Sometimes, I feel like I'm destroying myself between all my wants and needs. But that's okay!! Hopefully this game will be successful enough for me to quit my shitty day job and establish a new life for myself, right!??? Developing this game totally isn't me crafting a world of wish fulfillment and developing a sense of control over my life!!!!

Anyway, I'm hoping to finish this game in 2023. Thank you.

ALSO I dunno if you played it, but I made a short separate game during the summer when I was fucked up with Covid. It's called Hand of the Goddess and it's a completely normal game. It's on itch but it's not on Steam yet. Maybe give me $100 so I can upload this here.

Version 1.5.4

Happy Pride, everyone! Now's a good time to post an update for the game - hopefully the last one for the Basic version of the game.

BATTLE CHANGES

  • Omen Birds leave battle if you're cursed instead of forcing a character to leave battle
  • Money Toss cost raised to 60 and cooldown raised to 4.
  • Kyrie's Focused Blow now hits harder, but health cost changed from 5% to 8%.
  • Updated the forest encounters and some Tower encounters to adjust difficulty when Kyrie is in the party

GENERAL CHANGES

  • Added new vinyl.
  • Added conversation in room where Kyrie is recruited to explain the Stance mechanic.
  • I finally realized that the count for the main quest tip hotline was wrong so that's finally fixed. Whoops sorry if you were using that feature

SECRET STUFF

  • Because I started working on new parts of the game, there's some new stuff to see. Originally I was going to lock it all off, buuuut, I decided to leave a way in as a little treat.
  • Absolutely insane softlock accomplished through specific actions is not only fixed, but reproducing it will now give an achievement.

quick bug fix

Somebody got softlocked in the slot machine game area, so if this ever happens again or if you just don't feel like playing slots, you can leave and quit the game. You will not get your money back, though.

Also, while fixing that, I remembered another potential softlock that could happen in Downtown and removed the autosave there to prevent that from happening. Just remember to save on your own and you're good

1.5.3 update

So, I did push an earlier update, but it was so small that I decided not to acknowledge it until I got a few more fixes in. So, here's that changelog:

  • Bribe now works properly and it now has additional utility in boss battles, where enemies will get Distracted for a turn when bribed. No good if Ramona's fighting on her own, but with the power of friendship she'll find a way.
  • Changed Shank to be a low accurate attack, though it no longer makes Ramona Off-Guard. This is totally not because the old condition didn't work and I couldn't figure out why and decided to just pivot.
  • The Arena fights were not classified as boss fights before (including the dang bonus boss!!), so people could just cheese them by bribing the competition. I mean, I feel that makes sense in the setting, but also, I'm not letting players cheat this.
  • Hornets in the Arena fights also buff themselves now if you've outleveled them to keep the fights viable.
  • New chievo.

version 1.5.2 update

  • Minor typos and message box fixes across the board.
  • - Raised rent to $1400. True landlord behavior.
  • - Lowered max health decrease from using pills.
  • - Removed autosave at the Tower entrance to prevent a certain softlock.
  • - Fixed Cursed Rose
  • - Speeding Car now resists bleeding and poison; if it does not leave after the first attack, it will leave battle on the second turn + up. Same applies to Dungeon Car.
  • - So that you can survive the trip out of the warehouse, Kyrie gives some healing items after she's recruited. No lemonade though. If you died you died.
  • - Supervisor will no longer summon help from beyond the grave if it is killed first in its battle.
  • - Armed Adventurer lockpicking guide sequence break now fixed
  • - Scorpions no longer hide level. Don't know why they did to begin with.
  • - Fisherman at Dock now explains how fishing minigame works because I realize that it's not immediately obvious.
  • - Fishing minigame text boxes have changed to a different script (Yanfly's Event Script) so as to provide more consistent information
  • - Nerfed Trish's Knife
  • - Pretend It's Not There reworked. It now heals for 25% health and loses its cooldown, though it no longer grants status effect immunity. This is to better facilitate Devon's alternate role as a support.
  • - Oh yeah and there's a secret thing added somewhere
