ICY: Frostbite Edition is almost here!

It’s update time! What’s that you say? When are we going to release the Frostbite Edition of ICY? Well… Let’s just say we’ve had some minor bureaucratic issues, meaning that we have to wait some more before we give the Frostbite Edition a proper Steam release.

The good news, though? The game is complete, done, finished!

We’re satisfied about the result, since it’s not only better but also ten times more stable and polished than the original ICY. We mean it literally. We’ve leveled up as developers and used the humbling experience of ICY to make something better!

We are spending these last days to add a few more improvements. Let’s start, for example, with the inventory. Originally it wasn’t easy to track all the fight-related special Actions each character could use, but now our brand new UI shows each one of them clearly. As you can see, the Actions added to your pool are now visible under every item.

We’ve also worked on an alert system meant to support the dialogues through the use of pop-ups presenting the player with gameplay-related information. Now the player will be notified about many different things: new quests, finished quests, items found, items used, new companions, and so on. As you can see, a small pop-up will appear in the bottom right corner of the screen, informing you about what actually happened during a dialogue. Or reminding you that you’re running out of food…

We want you to always be in control and able to make informed decisions, so this is more than a simple Quality of Life tweak. Less time digging through your inventory after new stuff, more time for… crafting!

Yes! We’ve added a schematic system for crafting. Before, the player was able to craft just about anything from the start of the game. Now, he/she will begin with only a few crafting recipes and will have to buy new schematics from merchants or find them while scavenging.

Scavenging for loot has a brand new dimension and depth now, significantly improving the day to day gameplay. You can see the recipes known to you on the left and click on them to instantly put the required items in the crafting slots. No time wasted!

So, we haven’t just been twiddling our thumbs! The Frostbite Edition is ready to land on Steam and it’s only a matter of days now. But the more we’ll have to wait, the more we’ll improve!

NEWS: The Remastered Edition is close to its release!

Many of you may be wondering what happened to the Remastered Edition we promised and the answer is pretty simple: we had some issues. It wouldn’t be neither fair nor professional to go into detail, so let’s just say that the results were underwhelming and we had to do something to keep our promise: release a completely improved version of ICY.

That’s why a new programmer with 20 years of experience is working with us to deliver what we promised. We had to start from scratch and completely rewrite all the code needed, but we had all the assets we needed to build the game and in a small time frame we already managed to rebuild most of it.

We have no excuses, that’s why we can’t do anything but apologize to all the people waiting for the Remastered Edition and work to give our best. We are working to release a solid and compelling game, improving as much as possible everything that was lacking in the old ICY. If we decided to completely trash the previous work on the Remastered Edition it is because it was completely disappointing. We promised you a real improvement and that’s what we will give you.

Here is a short video showing some of the new features and improvements.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJTe_O2nrDU

What’s in the game right now?

We already worked a lot on the Remastered Edition and there are already several mechanics completely working. The new Travel System is complete: we got rid of the old, crappy one and created a new node-based travel system that will be more solid and consistent. The obscure camping mechanic is gone, now the player only has to worry about the food consumed while travelling between nodes and, in each node, there will be different places in which to scavenge for loot or hunt for food.

The Hunting and Scavenging System was completely revamped and it’s already working. There is now a clear display of the loot output and the risk involved in any activity and the dedicated player skills have a deeper impact on both the loot and the danger. We also improved all events related to hunting and scavenging and they are now offering a wider degree of choice and much more variety.

ICY is a 2D game with a lot of interfaces and on this side the original ICY was a little lacking. That’s why we focused on a complete rework all UIs. The Main Menu is already working and a new Character Creation System, along with a Character UI, was developed. This is not a simple aesthetic improvement: the character UI is much easier and faster to use and we also changed something about the player skills. We got rid of the least useful ones, like the Medicine skill, because we didn’t want the player to spend precious experience on skills devoid of a solid in-game impact. We also reduced the skill range from 1 to 10 to 0 to 5. We did this for balance reasons, in order to actually give a stronger meaning to each skill point acquired by the player.

We also worked on a new Inventory System. In the old ICY the player could only equip items on his/her own character, now it is possible to equip the whole party and, when we’ll be done with the new Combat System, this will have a deep impact on fights. Scavenging is now much more important, not only because of a simple Crafting System allowing the player to combine two items into a new one, but also because the player will need to carefully equip all companions to avoid getting penalties while fighting. Like anything else, the Inventory was also improved in terms of aesthetic and functionality.

We also worked on editing the whole script, improved some parts and added new contents. Several bugs got removed and some more choices were added, the overall narrative experience should last longer and be more rewarding.

What are we working on?

There are a few things we need to complete before releasing the Remastered Edition. The brand new Combat System is one of them: we felt that fights in ICY were lacking and underdeveloped, that’s why we are creating a new combat system with much more tactical depth and player control. We will reveal more details about it in the future when we’ll be done with it.

We also need to polish everything and create minor but essential features like the save system. It won’t take much time, but we want to release the Remastered Edition as much stable and complete as possible.

It’s hard to determine how long we will need to complete everything, but we’re are working faster than expected and the Remastered Edition should be ready around April. We sincerely apologize for this delay, but we will deliver something incredibly better than the original ICY.

Detailed list of improvements

  • Improved the Main Menu UI.
  • Added a completely reworked node-based Travel System.

  • Improved the overall performances. The game requires now five times less RAM to operate. Also the build size was greatly reduced.

Things that we need to do

  • Completely finish the Combat System and test its functionality and balance.
  • Implement a Save/Load system.
  • Add several audio feedbacks for the player’s actions on most interfaces.
  • Polish and debug everything (but right now no major issues appeared and everything is quite solid)
  • Correctly implement the Italian localization for all contents.
  • Do some minor fixes and additions.
  • Add reworked and improved tutorials.

We thank you again for your patience and we hope to deliver the Remastered as soon as possible!

ANNOUNCEMENT - ICY: Remastered Edition - Free Major Overhaul

Greetings fellow nomads!

It’s been some time since ICY was released, and we’ve kept supporting it as much as we could, but now we’re announcing our plans to do something more than just a couple of updates: we will create a Remastered Edition of ICY. Not a simple update, not a couple more quests, but a fully reworked edition that will allow ICY to shine at it was meant to.

Why?

Because we had to cut out a lot of good ideas due to the lack of funds during development. We also paid for our lack of experience. ICY is not a bad game, but there’s a lot of room for all kinds of improvements, and we want our first game to be as special as when we first imagined it.

Why now?

Because we’ve had the luck to meet investors who believe in us and our projects. Remastering ICY is nothing but one of the many things we will do in the future, since we are finally in a better financial situation.

When?

Before the end of the year, that’s for sure, but we don’t want to rush anything, and the remastered edition will come out only when it’s ready.

How?

We’ll completely rework ICY’s gameplay to offer a better and deeper survival challenge. We will also improve the game’s narrative, following the feedbacks we got over the last months. It won’t be just a slightly improved game - it will be like playing a brand new one that happens to use ICY’s plot (which will be also improved and expanded!)

What about the old ICY?

Anyone already in possession of ICY on Steam will receive the Remastered Edition for free, because you people are the ones we have to thank for the fact that Inner Void is still a reality. We owe it to you!

Anyone interested in playing the old ICY will still be able to access it, but we will not support it after the release of the Remastered Edition.

Here’s a detailed list of things we’ll do:

  • We will change the travel system: the player will move between different nodes with his/her party, and each node will hide different locations to explore.
  • We will rework the Hunting and Scavenging systems to be more varied and offer a more interesting challenge.
  • We will completely overhaul the combat, creating a new turn-based system in which the player will be able to choose the overall setup of his/her party and use items and special abilities to overcome the enemy. This will offer a combat system that is truly strategic and challenging, greatly improving what was lacking in ICY.
  • We will rework the inventory, allowing the player not only to craft items but also to manage the equipment of the whole party. This will make scavenging much more interesting, and the loot gained will finally be shared among companions.
  • We will add more quests and improve the main storyline, especially the final part, which was a little too rushed. The player will have more time to know Tanya, TJ and Janeve, and will have to face more challenges before reaching the game’s ending.
  • We will add more content related to the party, fleshing out the characters that travel with the player.

And this list is only about the major changes and additions. We are already working on the game from the ground up to give you a 360 degrees improved experience, turning a Visual Novel with some RPG elements into a true Survival RPG, with all the features you would expect from it!

We are also open to suggestions! Is there something you’d want to see in this new ICY? Tell us, we may be able to fulfill your desires!
Thanks for your attention, fellow travelers. We hope to give you a brand new ICY to enjoy soon!

As you are aware there is a massive amount of text in ICY which goes in many branching paths, so going through it all has been no small feat.
