End of the year update from Smoothbraindev

Hello, it has been a while since I've written to the community!

Incision has been in nonstop development for a whole year now, and even if I only released a single (very large) map this year, SOON(c) a lot more is coming! The shift from Episode 1's meat-hell cityscape to a more scifi alien themes was a bit more work than I could have expected. Most of this time has been just getting a whole new arsenal of enemies done, polishing the gameplay a bit, and getting the look of the scifi levels into quality that *I* expect from this game.

The next update, codename "Death-Filth" is coming soon and it will include quite a mountain of new and revamped content, bugfixes and small extras such as LUDICROUS GIBS! Here's a condensed list of what you can expect from it:

LEVELS

E2M1, "Harvest Vivarium"

This huge level has been split into two levels due to its length, density and also performance reasons. The level now ends after the "Mess" midboss fight, and E2M2 "Parasitic Relations" is the mall area after the Mess. The mall has a whole new very challenging area with amazing new music to go with it. This split should help with reported lower framerates and to keep the levels feel more fair in length knowing that losing all of your lives after 20-30 minutes of gameplay just isn't fun, and it went too far even for my pretty demanding standards.

E2M3, the episode's now titular "Death-Filth Medicine"

This alien ship full of containers of gore and blood include four new enemies of the Malichant faction, a mysterious alien race whose part in this story is still shrouded in mystery. The level also introduces underwater (or should I say underblood) sections, and a completely new theme with graphics made by pre-rendering 3D models into textures. The episode will also be renamed after this level.

NEW ENEMIES

Malichant Flock come in two variants, shotgun and chaingunner. They outrank most of Growth's creations in sheer damage output, but are big and slow targets.

The Sympaths are the game's first flying enemies with laser-drill eyes that may be slow to track you, but will cut you into pieces in seconds. They are weak, but move erratically and have the game's only hitscan weapon. What, a hitscan!? I am not joking.

The Favored are ninja-like experts with extreme movement speed, fastest projectiles, and ability to teleport near you to deal a nasty roundhouse kick from any distance. They will test your reflexes and reaction times more than any other foe you have faced.

WEAPONS

Jawbreaker has an altfire which shoots ricocheting pellets that gain damage every time they bounce, eventually igniting and burning enemies as well. It's more of a fun > function firing mode, but it offers a safer way to damage enemies from behind cover, and its power is immense in tight spaces.

Last thoughts and what's next

Next I will take a well-earned holiday vacation. After that, in January, it's time to start developing the first boss of this episode and E2M4. I want to release those two in the same update because bosses aren't very long experiences in the end. So, new boss, one new Malichant enemy, one level. I bet that sounds good for everyone.

As last message I want to thank everyone for their patience. Seriously. Incision is a solo project and the burnout from last year's crunch still haunts me occasionally. I have started changing my mindset, working habits (I'm a workaholic) and generally thinking about the game very differently, and I hope I can speed up the development next year in a healthier way. Making Harvest Vivarium taught me a hard lesson in pacing myself. I wanted to give people something after months of no updates, and I overdid it.

Going forward I want to make smaller maps more focus on making each feel unique and give players someting cool to see, more than before. It's not been wise to spend months on a single map. After all, a longer map is rarely a sign of quality! The fun you have playing a level is the only factor that matters.

Style Update

Survivors!

The blood Gods have listened to us and here we are with news from the Meat world. A few fixes, few changes, a little sneak peak into future. A happy day but also sad day.

They have said that we praised our beloved pet Kitty too much and have taken away some of her powers but fear not, as she is still our cutest little leech that got extra animation (see for yourself in the game x>). Some of our masochists have negotiated with the Gods even more powerful enemies, they are brutal, they are fast, they will use any advantage to bring you down! Now available 500% Projectile Speed and Projectile Damage! Are you ready to Die and blame the bugs for it?

Full patchnotes:

  • Difficulty can be set up to 500% (Dare to enter)
  • Fixed freeze caused by standing on falling floor after picking up Jawbreaker.

Kitty balance:

  • Kitty now gains +5% blood instead of +10% from gibbed enemies.
  • Max blood is now 150% instead of 200%
  • Altfire costs 20% blood instead of 15%
  • Primary fire still costs 10% blood, but now fires 8 bombs instead of 5.
  • If Kitty doesn’t have enough blood to fire it will do a small sound and animation with a text “not enough blood!” appearing on top of your screen.

Other changes:

  • Feral Armament will blow into pieces on second encounter
  • All pickables have now shiny effect.
  • Enemies are slightly glowing in dark (almost invisible but helps)
  • End of E1M3 now has special decorations and new enemies waiting near level exit.
  • Stoneman are properly waking up in Enemy Randomizer mode.
  • One of secrets received missing special effect.

Lastly, there's one more update to the game, that doesn't change the gameplay, but it sure as hell can be a feast for the eyes. As of now - enjoy the new Keyart and Steam assets:

This is it, for today. Look out for yourselves out there.

Good hunting!

INCISION OST coming soon to Steam!

There is smooth jazz, there is rough jazz, but rustcore industrial post-jazz is the best! Frédérick Chicoine "iNi" brought to the game an OST that eludes classification and for certain gives INCISION a similar edge that Nine Inch Nails music brought to the original Quake. It's weird, industrial, rough and dirty, full of horror ambiance that will make your hair stand on their ends. Just like the game, it's something else. Quite an experience. Unforgetable, even if you WANT to forget (not that you should).

The OST will be hitting Steam Music Store virtual shelves on Monday, February 27. Make sure to add it to your wishlist, to be reminded of it's arrival.

Now, back to the "ETERNITY" Update.

Complete 0.4.5 Changelog

MAJOR ADDITIONS:

  • Randomizer mode. All enemies, weapons and ammo have been randomized, creating a chaotic game mode where luck is your best friend, or your worst enemy.
  • Two new powerups: Sawspear Overcharge and Carnage Accelerator! Sawspear Overcharge doubles your Sawspear's damage for the rest of the level. Carnage Accelerator causes damage and rate of fire to increase as you damage enemies for one minute, capping at 200% damage and speed.

WEAPONS:

  • Excess bullets will pass through dying enemies instead of gibbing them, making the shotgun much better at hitting multiple enemies.
  • Sawspear's attacks hit faster reducing startup delay from 5 to 3 frames.
  • Kitty's blood ammo from gibbed enemies now spawns a trail that homes in on player, and added a pickup text when Kitty gains blood.
  • Kitty now gains 10 ammo instead of 5 from every gibbed enemy.
  • Magnum, Shotgun, Machinegun, and Rocket Launcher have improved sounds.

ENEMIES:

  • Fire damage tics slower to make burning less overpowered.
  • Enemies dying from burning now also splash blood to make feeding Kitty more efficient (they're still pink on the inside).
  • Throne Firstborn's aggression and turret health reduced to make the fight slightly less chaotic.
  • For optimization and balancing purposes, reduced enemy count in E1M4 "The Filth Pit" and E1M5 "Nerve-End", and occasionally replaced weak enemies with stronger ones.
  • Cheeks health upgraded from 230 to 280.
  • Spiderpope health upgraded from 210 to 260.
  • Enemies can be bounced into air with explosives and shooting them while airborne keeps them in the air for longer.
  • Removed an out of bounds enemy which prevented getting 100% in Filth Pit.

OPTIONS:

  • Resolution changing should now work properly both in main menu and in-game.
  • VSync works as intended now.
  • Added bloom and chromatic aberration visual effects.

MISC CHANGES:

  • New main menu theme.
  • Many of the secrets made easier to spot and more rewarding.
  • Projectile stability adjusted to prevent fast projectiles from passing through thin objects. This affects Soldiers, Clinkers, Maws and Cheeks.
  • Blood mist from gibs disappears faster to avoid too much visual clutter on screen.
  • Dithering effect has been reduced on each level.
  • Various small performance improvements in enemy code, weapon code, and especially when enemy projectiles and effects are spawned.
  • Increased ambient lighting on E1M6.
  • HP can’t go above 200 by collecting stim injectors.
  • Added a new shortcut/secret to Feral Armament.
  • Tumor and teleport sounds are now affected by volume slider.

Post-release update

Hello, SmoothBrainDev here!

It's been roughly two months since the Early Access release of INCISION, and I'm so happy and so so thankful by people's response to the game. It's been a blast watching people stream it, make videos, post screenshots and especially give feedback to me.

As some might have noticed, the updates have been scarce lately and I haven't been visiting the forums very much. I was, and still am, quite burned out after the release. But I'm finally trying to get back to speed with the development of Episode 2 (as seen in these two teaser pictures), and to polish the game a bit while doing so, while taking care of not falling into yet another burnout accidentally.

So what's next? I'm working on an update with many small additions to the game. Some of them include:

- Physics for enemies so shooting, blowing up and kicking enemies sends them flying. I always felt the enemies were a bit too rigid and needed an extra layer of fun.

- Enviromental hazards to use with enemy physics. Kicking enemies into giant fans, anyone?

- Brightness/contrast options

- Last used weapon keybind

- Updates on visual clarity such as toned down dithering, less obstructive gore, better visuals for feeding Kitty etc.

- Possible addition of powerup pickups. You know, to even out your odds against the brutal opposition.

I hope everyone enjoys INCISION and keeps supporting its development as it evolves. Thank you again!

INCISION 0.4.3

  • Difficulty settings now remain the same between levels as intended (E1M2 always reset them to 100%)
  • HUD/Menus fixed for ultra widescreen and 4:3 aspect ratios
  • Rescaled crosshair slightly to make it work on lower resolutions
  • Fixed an unreachable supersecret in E1M4
  • Added a new supersecret
  • Fixed unreachable secret in E1M3
  • Minor collision/visual fixes for E1Boss3 and E1M4
  • Corrected the name E1Boss3 to E1Boss2
  • Losing a life gives player 75HP and the invulnerability window is now 6 seconds.
  • Feral Armament's vomit damage is now lower(3) but triggers faster (0.75sec)
  • Options menu now has info text for each button
  • Changed the Sycophant axe model
  • Added breakable Clinker Barrels into E1M2
  • Damage multiplier fixes for Soldier, Sycophant, Clinker, Maw and Feral Armament

INCISION 0.4.2

  • Fixed HP reset when unpausing the game
  • Reduced shotgun alt-fire spread and improved damage slightly
  • Feral Armament cannot be stunlocked with kicks anymore
  • Reduced Turret's health from 80 to 75 (equal to revolver altfire's damage)
  • Fixed small collision issues in E1M4, E1Boss1, and E1Boss3

Hyperstrangers!

It is that time of the year again. Boomercon is upon us! Or Realms Deep 2022, if you will. We've had six announcements this year, so let's jump into it without further ado. This serves just as a summary - more detailed posts will be popping up on appropriate game pages within a day or two. Let's go!

INCISION - Early Acces launch + Special Offers!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1734680/INCISION/
Check out our nevest, explosive release! INCISION is a rare gem - a very retro-looking, unforgiving throwback shooter, that's so full of wonderfully-executed ideas, that it feels fresh and juicy. That is if you like your juice in the taste of rust, rot, and horror. The game launched on the day of Realms Deep main event - 16 September, and is already gaining a lot of praise from the players on Steam. If you like games such as DUSK, you can't afford to miss INCISION. And speaking of DUSK - DUSK owners get extra 15% off the price that's been already lowered by 15% in the release week. Similar discount applies for owners of Nightmare Reaper and Hedon, with even more bundles on the way! Get your tetanus shot, and plunge into the horror now!

POSTAL: Brain Damaged - Horde Mode announcement

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1359980/POSTAL_Brain_Damaged/
POSTAL: Brain Damaged has already gotten a small balancing update. Now, on September 19 it's getting another one. Much more substantial - it should help a lot with the balance between exploration and combat, thanks to the new ammo mechanics. Wait, that's not what you just saw in the video above? That's very perceptive! November 10 will mark the release of the Horde Mode in POSTAL: Brain Damaged, so you can spend even more time with the Brain Damaged Dude!

Blood West - Chapter 2 announcement

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1587130/Blood_West
Your favorite eerie wild west stealth-shooter with a bit of a immersive sim aftertaste has exceeded our initial expectations as to the reception and popularity. In wake of such success the Blood West team has been expanded, and the project was granted an extended development schedule, to deliver more content than it was originally intended. The second out of 3 chapters in the story of the Revenant Gunslinger will hit Steam on Halloween, and you'll be getting a map that's 1.5 larger and tighter packed with events and NPCs then the first one.

Supplice - release date announcement

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1693280/Supplice/
According to some sources, Supplice is the best-looking game in the entire Hyperstrange catalog. Well, beauty takes time! We've hold off making the announcement of the release date, to make sure Mekworx team has enough time to work their magic. Now, we're happy to announce the date you've been dying to know: 30 march 2023!

77p Egg: Eggwife - new game announcement

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1317020/77p_egg_Eggwife/
We fell in love with Eggwife after first seeing it in the Realms Deep 2021 showcase. Now, after we've released POSTAL: Brain Damaged it's perfectly clear, that the audience wants us to take things a step further. Or a lot of steps further. To go so far, that we'll end up in UK. Eggwife is what would happen if the Brits came up with POSTAL, but... it's so much more. An immersive sim? A dating sim? A shopping cart driver sim? You name it! Maybe just go wishlist it, and get the Demo for you to plau

GHOSTWARE: Arena of the Dead - new game announcement

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1893370/GHOSTWARE_Arena_of_the_Dead/
We strive to bring overlooked, original titles to a broader audience. Sometimes originality isn't apparent at face value. What seems like an arena shooter with retro stylings happens to become a whole sprawling world full of adventure and danger. You can find out for yourself just what makes Ghostware so unique that it found its way to our hearts. We'e not sure of the release date yet with this one, but we do highly encourage you to wishlist it and take the available demo for a spin.

And that's that. We'll be happy to hear your thoughts on our Hyperstrange Discord, steam forums, and clay tablets. Thank you for being a part of the Hyperstrange crowd, and Stay Metal!

Your's truly,
